The relationship between servant leadership, team commitment, team citizenship behaviour and team effectiveness : an exploratory study

In a quest to remain competitive in the provision of consumer goods and services at the lowest possible economic cost, organisations have been compelled to adopt and adapt to the winds of change that have literally taken centre stage in the global market. The increased use of teams as production vehicles in today‟s workplace is one of the notable developments that deserve and justify further investigation. A study of the literature on teams revealed that leadership plays a crucial role in a team‟s dynamics, its survival and ultimate success. Therefore the overarching aim of the present study was to determine the manner in which leadership, specifically servant leadership, affects team effectiveness. In an attempt to answer this question, an explanatory structural model that purports to explicate the manner in which leadership affects team effectiveness was subsequently developed and tested. The study was conducted using primary and secondary school teachers from schools in and around Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape (South Africa). Each school was regarded as a team. Out of the 400 questionnaires distributed to the members of the teams, 201 (n=201) completed questionnaires were received comprising 29 teams. The respondents who participated in the study completed four questionnaires – joined together in one composite questionnaire. The four questionnaires constituting the composite questionnaire were: the rater version of the Servant Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ) of Barbuto and Wheeler (2006) - an SLQ self-report version also exists; the Team Commitment Survey of Bennett (1997); the slightly modified version of the Organisational Citizenship Behaviour Scale (OCBS) developed by Podsakoff and Mackenzie (1994) and the Team Effectiveness Questionnaire (TEQ) developed by Larson and LaFasto (1989). Item analyses were performed on each of the subscales using SPSS version 17. Thereafter, confirmatory factor analysis was performed on the measurement model. However, some of the subscales, specifically for team citizenship behaviour and team commitment appeared to be problematic. The proposed model was tested using structural equation modelling (SEM) via LISREL version 8.54. Overall, it was found that both the measurement and structural model fitted the data reasonably well. From the results obtained in this study it can be concluded that there is a very weak negative relationship between servant leadership and team effectiveness, while there is a significant positive relationships between servant leadership and team commitment, team commitment and team citizenship behaviour, and team commitment and team effectiveness. Team citizenship behaviour has a slightly strong inverse effect on team effectiveness. Furthermore, team commitment has been found to be a strong moderator in the relationship between servant leadership and team effectiveness. With the unique combined variables included in this study, the study can be seen as making a contribution to the existing theory and literature by explicating the findings with regard to the interrelationships between servant leadership, team commitment, team citizenship behaviour, and team effectiveness. However, referring back to the literature, this study was an attempt to help further some of these “emerging” organisational behaviour constructs. It should therefore be seen as investigative in nature and much more follow-up research in this domain is deemed necessary. This study stated its limitations but also made recommendations for possible future research avenues to be explored. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die wêreld-van-werk het heelwat verander oor die afgelope dekade. Om dus in die vraag na verbruikersgoedere en -dienste te voorsien en steeds mededingend te bly voortbestaan, teen die laagste ekonomiese koste, word organisasies genoodsaak om aan te pas en te verander soos wat internasionale markte voortdurend verander en voor uitgaan. Die toenemende aanwending van spanne as produksie-medium in vandag se werksplek is een van die ooglopende ontwikkelinge wat verdere ondersoek verdien en regverdig. Bestudering van die literatuur oor spanne het aan die lig gebring dat leierskap „n sleutelrol speel in spandinamika, „n span se oorlewing en uiteindelike suksesbereiking. Dus was die oorkoepelende doelwit van hierdie studie om die wyse te bepaal waarop leierskap – spesifiek dan, diensbare-leierskap – spaneffektiwiteit beïnvloed. In „n poging om hierdie vraagstuk aan te spreek, is daar gevolglik „n verklarende strukturele (vergelykings) model ontwikkel en getoets met die doel om meer lig te werp op die wyse waarop leierskap spaneffektiwiteit beïnvloed. „n Studie is uitgevoer deur van laerskool- en hoërskool-onderwysers van skole in en om Stellenbosch in die Wes-Kaap (Suid-Afrika) gebruik te maak. Elke skool is as ʼn spanbeskou. Uit die totaal van 400 vraelyste wat uitgestuur is, is 201 (n=201) voltooide vraelyste terug ontvang – wat 29 volledige spanne omvat het. Respondente wat aan hierdie studie deelgeneem het, moes vier vraelyste – wat deel uitgemaak het van een saamgestelde vraelys – voltooi. Die vier vraelyste wat deel uitgemaak het van die saamgestelde vraelys en gedien het om die 201 onderwysers se menings te verkry, het bestaan uit die beoordelaarsvorm van die Servant Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ) van Barbuto en Wheeler (2006) – daar is ook „n SLQ self beoordelingsvorm wat deur Barbuto en Wheeler ontwikkel is; die Team Commitment Survey van Bennett (1997); die effens aangepaste weergawe van die Organisational Citizenship Behaviour Scale (OCBS) wat ontwikkel is deur Podsakoff en Mackenzie (1994); en die Team Effectiveness Questionnaire (TEQ) van Larson en LaFasto (1989). Itemontledings is op elk van die subskale uitgevoer deur gebruik te maak van LISREL weergawe 17. Daarna is bevestigende faktorontleding op die metingsmodel uitgevoer. Sekere van die subskale het egter problematies voorgekom – spesifiek die subskale vir spangemeenskapsgedrag en spanbetrokkenheid. Die voorgestelde model is getoets deur middel van struktuurvergelykingsmodellering (SVM) aan die hand van LISREL weergawe 8.54. Oor die algeheel is bevredigende passings van beide die metingsmodel en die strukturele (vergelykings) model op die data verkry. Die resultate van die verskillende ontledings het getoon dat daar ‟n baie swak negatiewe verwantskap tussen diensbare leierskap en spaneffektiwiteit bestaan, terwyl beduidende positiewe verwantskappe gevind is tussen diensbare leierskap en spanbetrokkenheid, spanbetrokkenheid en spangemeenskapsgedrag, en, spanbetrokkenheid en spaneffektiwiteit. Spangemeenskapsgedrag het ‟n redelike sterk negatiewe verwantskap met spaneffektiwiteit getoon. Verder is daar bevind dat spanbetrokkenheid ʼn sterk modererende rol speel in die verwantskap tussen diensbare leierskap en spaneffektiwiteit. Gegewe die unieke kombinasie van konstrukte wat in hierdie studie ingesluit is, kan daar gesê word dat hierdie studie „n bydrae lewer ten opsigte van die bestaande teorie deur lig te werp op die verwantskappe tussen diensbare leierskap, spanbetrokkenheid, spangemeenskapsgedrag en spaneffektiwiteit. Tog, deur weer na die literatuur te verwys is dit belangrik om te benadruk dat hierdie studie beskou moet word as ʼn poging om hierdie “nuwe” ontluikende organisasiegedrag konstrukte verder te help uitbou. Juis om hierdie rede behoort hierdie studie as ondersoekend van aard geïnterpreteer te word en is opvolgnavorsing oor hierdie gebied nodig. Die studie stel sy beperkinge, maar maak ook aanbevelings vir verdere navorsingsgebiede wat potensieel ondersoek kan word.

Backsides / interiors : Tracing a treatment of backsides in domestic interiors

Interiors are often dealing with the notion of front and back. Physically, with walls facing the occupant and concealing a “behind”, a backside, perhaps an adjacent room. But also, in organization; “in the back of the building” meaning the furthest away from the entrance or from the street, the public. There is also a variety of interiors that are backsides them self. Spaces that, in contrast to fronts or “primary” spaces not are intended to be shown perhaps because they are occupied by functions, or people that for some reason are desired to be hidden. The idea of a backside, though, whether considered good or bad, what belongs there and not, has shifted over time. I believe that this is a truly cultural issue, governed by social constructions that stabilize and become customs in the fabrication of interiors. In this project have I studied and reworked the information from a few domestic interiors. Through the methods of inverting and full-scale construction, have I investigated what a “backside of an interior” is, what it does and how the treatment of it has changed over time. In my studies, I have found that a contemporary apartment interior attempts to seamlessly exclude the “backside”, just like the parlours of a 100 years old bourgeoise palace. But in the contemporary apartment, it is because of praxis and standardization, and not because of what ideas govern the design. By building a full-scale part of an actual contemporary apartment - where I invert and reorganize the order of how it would have been costume - the praxis is brought to light and questioned.

Who is this Servant? It is not intended to know who historically was the Servant of YHWH, as this is an impossible task. It is intended to raise some clues from the historical context and the actual text of Deutero-Isaiah that leads to consider the possibility that an exile community in Babylon was called servant and destined by YHWH for such a mission. In the passage from Isaiah 42.1 to 9, YHWH calls the Servant for a very specific mission. This right that Servant will come out to the nations is the right to happen for the nations. This is about the law of the Lord, that manifested in the release of all prisoners. The Servant with his silent and prophetic postures, with his solidarity practice to the sufferers and his tenacity will carry forward this project of liberation. Through exegetical procedures and theoretical framework of different authors who have already researched on this topic, it intends to investigate the possibility that this song of the Servant of YHWH arises a Theology of the Servant who is deeply in tune with the Being of YHWH himself. Thus, YHWH - Servant carries the same concrete project of liberation that is founded in the justice and right. Awakens among the suffered people, a new model of political leadership. / A identidade do Servo de YHWH sempre foi um grande desafio para a pesquisa bíblica. Quem seria esse Servo? Não se pretende saber historicamente quem foi o Servo de YHWH, pois isso é uma tarefa impossível. Pretende-se levantar algumas pistas a partir do contexto histórico e do próprio texto do Dêutero-Isaías que permita pensar na possibilidade de que uma comunidade exilada na Babilônia fosse chamada de Servo e destinada por YHWH para tal missão. Na perícope de Is 42,1-9, YHWH convoca o Servo para uma missão bem específica: fazer sair o direito para as nações. Esse direito que o Servo fará sair às nações é o direito de YHWH que se manifesta na libertação concreta de todos os encarcerados. O Servo com suas posturas silenciosas e proféticas, com sua prática solidária aos sofredores e com sua tenacidade, levará adiante esse projeto de libertação. Por meio dos procedimentos exegéticos e com referencial teórico de diferentes autores que já pesquisaram sobre esse tema, pretende-se investigar a possibilidade de que neste cântico do Servo de YHWH possa nascer uma Teologia do Servo que está em profunda sintonia com o Ser do próprio YHWH. Desta maneira, YHWH - Servo carregam um mesmo projeto concreto de libertação que tem como fundamento o direito e a justiça. Surge, então, no meio do povo sofrido, um novo modelo de liderança política.

The ethics is present in the Code of Professional Ethics (CEP) as well as the Legal Regime Single of federal public servants and need for ongoing discussion. Being composed of professional ethics ethical principles and moral values enshrined in the code of ethics of the server, it is necessary to their knowledge and understanding to exercise everyday. Both ethical and moral values acquired based on the cultural construction of each professional category, it fails to bring the "fore" the precepts that underlie Socratics. Ethics for Socrates was the interior refinement. Faced with this question, one has the general objective to assess the level of knowledge of servers teachers and technical and administrative staff of the Federal University of Ceará on the Code of Ethics Public, embodied in Decree No. 1171 of 1994 and No. 6029, 2007 in art. 116 and 117 of Law No. 8112 of 1990 and in art. 37, main clause of the Federal Constitution of 1988. The methodology consisted of a literature review because it involves explanations grounded in books, magazines, articles and white papers that address the issue in question; application of a questionnaire among the servers taken at random from the population surveyed in the period from March to May, 2012, 13 units manning the UFC. It is concluded that more than half of respondents said they do not know the Code of Professional Ethics Server; servers consider important the promotion of professional ethics within the Federal University of Ceará. Because of this, it is understood that there is need to implement actions, such as courses, seminars, lectures, and other promotions aimed at promoting professional ethics in the Federal University of Ceará. / A ética é tema proveniente de estudos filosóficos, originados no mundo antigo, maturados e discutidos na Idade Média, Moderna e no Mundo Contemporâneo. Seus conceitos e princípios são discutidos muito além da academia, no campo profissional, quando se trata da ética nas organizações. A eticidade está presente no Código de Ética Profissional (CEP), assim como no Regime Jurídicos Único dos Servidores Públicos Federais, e carecem de debate permanente. La modernisation du service public nécessite un accompagnement en matière de GRH pour évaluer les compétences des personnels. Cette démarche passe par la nécessité de disposer d’un outil de gestion adapté, faisant appel aux NTIC, et permettant d’agréger des données qualitatives. Un moteur d’inférence interne a été créé, basé sur l’intelligence artificielle et utilisant la logique floue. Il apparait, à l’issue de la réalisation de l’outil d’Evaluation Assistée par Ordinateur, qu’il doit posséder des qualités particulières permettant de réaliser l’évaluation la plus objective et équitable possible. Sa mise en usage dans des conditions réelles indique que pour pouvoir faire l’objet d’une acceptation et d’une appropriation par les managers et les personnels évalués, il doit être crédible et efficace. Les tests réalisés nous permettent d’affirmer que la perception essentielle de son rôle, de son utilité, et de sa facilité d’utilisation est une nécessité qui est le corollaire de sa pérennité. / The modernization of the public sector requires an HRM accompaniment, for the evaluation competencies of the supervisory staff. This approach relies on the necessity of having an adapted management tool, requiring NICT, and allowing the aggregation of qualitative data. To achieve our objectives, we used an innovative, internal, interference engine based on artificial intelligence, namely the “fuzzy logic”. It would seem, at the conclusion of the realization of our Computer-Aided Evaluation tool, that it must possess particular qualities allowing it to carry out the most objective and fairest evaluation as possible. Its use in real conditions indicates that it must, to be accepted and an appropriation, at once by the managers and the estimated staffs, be credible and effective. The realized tests allow us to assert that the essential perception of its role, its utility, and its facility of use, are a necessity which will be the corollary of ensuring its continual existence.

Vývoj mesiášských představ s pohledem na Iz 52,13 - 53,12 / The History of Messianic Ideas with Regard to Isaiah 52,13 {--} 53,12

This work is focused on the history of Messianic ideas in context of the Old Testament, in Jewish nation in the period between the Old and the New Testaments, and in the area of ancient Near East (Egypt, Mesopotamy, and preIsraelite Kanaan). The author of the work regards Messianic ideas in the area of Mediterrean and Persia in the age of Hellenism. She also considers eschatological Messianic figures in Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. In the second part of the work, she studies the passage from prophet Isaiah 52,13-53,12 and its figure of Lord{\crq}s servant, then she also mentions the impact of that figure on the authors of the New Testament. The Messiah figure's origin lies in preIsraelite religious ideas of ancient Orient. The Jewish idea of Messiah differs from the others. The work is concluded by the statement, that concepts of "Messiah" as well as "Servant" in DeuteroIsaiah expresses mission and function, which was in different backgrounds interpreted in a different way. Various figures, especially kings, entered this role. The saving function of the Messiah consists in certain sacrifice, sometimes self-sacrifice, which considerably improves the quality of life of particular group of people.

The focus on training and development has become essential to achieve excellence in service delivery. In public administration,agencies responsible for professional development are the government schools, who work with public servants and employees in improving the state machine, which has the duty to provide quality public services to society. This study objective is to evaluate the impact of professional training of the server in the Manaus Prefecture and how this training affects their professional lives, analyzing also aspects related to organizational support provided to the server to develop quality skills acquired in training. The analysis was done by adapting the IMPACT model of evaluation of training by applying with public servants who took part in professional training activities promoted by the Public Service School of Manaus Prefecture (ESPI), comprising the dimensions Training Impact in Work, Organizational Support Training and Support Training Transfer. The results suggest that there is a strong positive impact of professional training administered by ESPI in work activities of the servers, however, the support given by the management to training requires adjustments to able to provide a better use of knowledge and skills acquired by servers in favor by your institutions. / A capacitação profissional é uma arma poderosa na busca pelo desenvolvimento das competências humanas no trabalho. O foco em desenvolvimento e treinamento tornou-se indispensável ao alcance da excelência na prestação de serviços, sejam eles públicos ou privados. Na administração pública os órgãos responsáveis pelo aperfeiçoamento profissional são as Escolas de Governo, que atuam junto aos funcionários públicos na melhoria da máquina estatal, que tem o dever de prestar serviços públicos de qualidade. Neste estudo objetiva-se avaliar o impacto da capacitação profissional do servidor na Prefeitura de Manaus e de que modo esta afeta suas vidas profissionais, analisando, ainda, aspectos ligados ao suporte organizacional fornecido ao servidor para que desenvolva as competências adquiridas nos treinamentos. A análise se deu por meio da adaptação do Modelo IMPACT de avaliação do treinamento, a partir de sua aplicação junto aos servidores egressos de atividades de capacitação promovidas pela Escola de Serviço Público da Prefeitura de Manaus (ESPI), compreendendo as dimensões Impacto do Treinamento no Trabalho, Suporte Organizacional e Suporte à Transferência do Treinamento. Os resultados sugerem que há forte impacto positivo da capacitação administrada pela ESPI nas atividades laborais dos servidores, no entanto, o suporte dado pelas chefias ao treinamento necessita de ajustes para que possa proporcionar um melhor aproveitamento dos conhecimentos e habilidades adquiridos pelos servidores em prol de suas instituições.

Esta pesquisa é uma sistematização da carreira do arquiteto e funcionário público Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni, tendo como pano de fundo sua atuação como funcionário do Estado no Departamento de Obras Públicas (DOP), no qual trabalhou de 1960 a 1990. Além do DOP, o arquiteto foi comissionado para cinco outros órgãos e companhias públicas, FECE - Fundo Estadual de Construções Escolares, CECAP - Companhia Estadual de Casas para o Povo, CESP - Centrais Eléctricas de São Paulo, EMURB - Empresa Municipal de Urbanização, e IPESP - Instituto de Previdência do Estado de São Paulo onde foram possíveis diversas experiências e expressões arquitetônicas e urbanas. A partir da pergunta: Qual é a função do arquiteto na construção do país, do estado e da cidade, escolhi um profissional que, de seus sessenta anos de trabalho, dedicou metade à elaboração de projetos e obras em órgãos públicos do estado de São Paulo. Esta pesquisa retrata o trajeto deste homem e profissional público. A ideia é avançar na compreensão das políticas públicas urbanas desta época e investigar o quanto destas posturas influenciaram e foram influenciadas pelo arquiteto Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a história desses órgãos e relacionar a trajetória do arquiteto Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni com os aspectos mais relevantes da cultura e do imaginário moderno em São Paulo. O levantamento, a organização e a restituição de sua obra, característica da arquitetura brasileira contemporânea, tem como intuito contribuir para o avanço na reflexão acerca da profissão e do seu papel na constituição do espaço urbano nas décadas em questão. / This research is a systematization of Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni\'s carrier as an architect and public servant, having as a background his work on the Department of Public Building (DOP), where he stayed from 1960 to 1990. Beyond DOP, the architect was commissioned to work in five others institutions and companies: Educational Buildings State Fund (FECE), State Company of Houses for the People (CECAP), São Paulo Electrical Centers (CESP) and Municipal Company of Urbanization (EMURB) and Welfare Institute of São Paulo (IPESP). During his stay at those institutions, the architect had several experiences and was able to try many different architectural and urban expressions. Starting with the question \"What is the architect\'s role in the development of a country, state and city?\", I chose a professional that dedicated half of his 60 years of work to the elaboration of projects for public institutions in São Paulo. This research shows the story of a man and public servant. The idea behind it is to explore the realm of public politics of the studied period and investigate just how much of this scenario influenced and have been influenced by the architect Geraldo Vespaziano Puntoni. The main objective of this work is to study the story behind those institutions and relate it to the architect\'s story, along with the most important aspects of the culture and modern imaginary of São Paulo. The gathering of data, organization and restitution of the architect\'s work, known for being embedded with characteristics of modern Brazilian architecture, helps to enrich the discussion about the role of the professional and its relation to the development of the urban space in the studied decades.

Aprovados, mas...capacitados? um estudo sobre princípios versus regras nos exames de suficiência e em provas de concursos públicos / Approved, but...prepared? a study on principles versus rules in professional entry exams and civil servant job selection.

Em uma sociedade cada vez mais complexa e sofisticada, e em nosso contexto com especial atenção às relações empresarias e econômicas, há cada vez menos espaço para um olhar ancorado em representações estanques. Por conta disso, e com o advento das International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) no Brasil, suportada pela Lei n° 11.638/07, iniciou-se uma nova visão contábil priorizando evidenciação mais refinada visando refletir mais fidedignamente as transações das empresas. Talvez o que melhor simbolize esse novo enfoque seja o viés principiológico das IFRS. Entretanto, a inquietação surge quanto a um ponto específico de sua efetiva implementação na sociedade. Se o incentivo ou o direcionamento das avaliações que o recém-egresso se submete em relação ao seu conhecimento contábil, tanto no exame de suficiência como na busca por colocação no mercado de trabalho via concurso público, poderia estar desalinhada aos novos ideais buscados pelas IFRS por meio dos princípios. Com base na teoria da avaliação, Preskill e Torres (1999) alertam que a avaliação precisa integrar o aprendido à prática da sociedade. Da mesma forma, Patton (1997) relembra que é fundamental que o avaliador enfrente o desafio de fazer avaliações que sejam correlacionadas em sua aplicação e úteis. Com a vinculação da nova visão principiológica com a teoria da avaliação, através das definições apresentadas pelos autores acima, foi então analisado, utilizando-se do método Delphi, se as provas de credenciamento contábil e as provas dos principais concursos públicos federais têm utilizado em maior número as questões principiológicas. Os resultados, porém, evidenciaram o contrário, mostrando que há uma maior cobrança de regras nas provas analisadas, ou seja, nestes exames, ainda existe a predominância do modelo regramental apenas sob o manto das IFRS. Deste modo, percebe-se uma possível existência de descompasso entre os ideais relacionados às IFRS e o direcionamento indutor das avaliações de recém-egressos e de profissionais da área contábil. / In an increasingly complex and sophisticated society, and in our context with special attention to business and economic relations, there is lesser space for an anchored view in stationary representations. In this regard, and with the advent of the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) in Brazil, supported by Law No. 11,638 / 07, a new accounting approach was initiated prioritizing disclosure that is more refined in order to reflect more accurately corporate transactions. Perhaps, what best symbolizes this new approach is the principles bias of IFRS. However, the concern arises related to a specific point of its effective implementation in society. If the incentive or direction of the assessments that a new graduate undergoes in relation to his / her accounting knowledge, both in the professional entry exam and in the search for placement in the job market (civil servant), could be misaligned with the new principle ideals defended by IFRS. Based on evaluation theory, Preskill and Torres (1999) warn that evaluation needs to integrate learning and society practice. Similarly, Patton (1997) recalls that it is critical that an evaluator faces the challenge of making evaluations that are correlated in their application and useful. By linking this new principiological vision with evaluation theory, through the definitions presented by the authors above, professional entry exams and tests as part of civil servant selection have been analyzed by Delphi method to find out if they have used principiological questions in larger numbers. The results, however, indicate the opposite idea. They showed that there is a bigger charging of rules in the tests that were analyzed, in other words, there is still a predominance of the rule model with a single difference: now under IFRS cloak. Thus, there is a possible existence of mismatch between the ideals related to IFRS and the inductive orientation of the assessment directed to new graduates and professionals in the accounting area.
