Kroppens form och utseende: betydelsen för utövare på gym / The shape and appearance of the body: the importance of practitioners at the gym

Kaipainen, Ida, Johansson, Jakob January 2018 (has links)
Purpose The purpose of this assignment was to examine what meaning the body’s shape and form has on an active person who works out in gym. Method We have used a survey as our method in this assignment to get the results. The people that we have asked to answer the survey are 51 individuals, between 18- 65 years old that lives in a medium-sized Swedish town. All of these women and men are regularly working out at a gym. Result The results of this survey have shown that those who has work outed for over two years, feels satisfied with their body shape in a wider perspective then those who have trained less then two years and that age do not play a big part of it. Men are in general more satisfied with their bodies than women are. Men also work out more hours per week then women. The result also shows that older people are more satisfied with their bodies then younger but the younger in a large perspective have become more or less satisfied with their bodies after they started working out. The younger generation put a lot more focus on how other people’s bodies look and how their own shape look. Another result this survey have had were that far from everybody who visited the gym feel at home there, but most of them have become more satisfied with themselves after they have gone to the gym more regularly, especially those who have done it over two years’ time. Conclusion Many but still far from everybody that work out at a gym feels at home there, however many who do work out regularly feel more satisfied with themselves. Age play a small part in it all, older people care far less about their body in comparison with the younger generations. Gender also seems to play a part of the comparison as men feels more satisfied with their bodies than women do. Men tends to have more and longer workout sessions at the gym.

Communities in Translation: History and Identity in Medieval England

Hurley, Mary Kate January 2013 (has links)
"Communities in Translation: History and Identity in Medieval England" argues that moments of identity formation in translated texts of the Middle Ages are best understood if translation is viewed as a process. Expanding on Brian Stock's idea that texts organize and define real historical communities, I argue that medieval translations--broadly considered as textual artifacts which relate received narratives--create communities within their narratives based on religious, ethnic, and proto-nationalist identities. In my first chapter, I assert that the Old English Orosius--a translation of a fifth-century Latin history--creates an audience that is forced to assume a hybrid Roman-English identity that juxtaposes a past Rome with a present Anglo-Saxon England. In chapter two, I argue that the inclusion of English saints among traditional Latin ones in Ælfric of Eynsham's Lives of the Saints stakes a claim not only for the holiness of English Christians but for the holiness of the land itself, thus including England in a trans-temporal community of Christians that depended on English practice and belief for its continued success. In my third chapter, I turn to Chaucer's Man of Law's Tale, and read it alongside its historical source by Nicholas Trevet in order to demonstrate Chaucer's investment in a multicultural English Christianity. These arguments inform my reading of Beowulf, a poem which, while not itself a translation, thematizes the issues of community raised by my first three chapters through its engagement with the problematic relationship between communities and narrative. When Beowulf's characters and narrator present an inherited narrative meant to bolster community, they more often reveal the connections to outside forces and longer histories that render its textual communities exceedingly fragile. Where previous studies of translation focus on the links of vernacular writings to their source texts and their Latin past, I suggest that these narratives envision alternative presents and futures for the communities that they create.

Existential consciousness, redemption, and Buddhist allusions in the work of Saul Bellow

Unknown Date (has links)
Within the past two centuries, massive industrialization, technological and scientific advances, wars, diseases, failures in social systems, and religious, ethnic, and political conflicts have produced an existential angst that has saturated the collective consciousness of modern man. The atrocities of World Wars I and II induced European and American authors and artists to confront this state of disillusionment, anxiety, loneliness, fear, and dread; consequently, much of our modern literature reflects this nihilistic darkness. In this state of grave doubts and uncertainties, the modern man finds himself alienated and disconnected from the very essences that ground him. Scholars of literature, philosophy, and the various arts and social sciences, having examined this contemporary dilemma, find just cause to question our western belief that science, technology, and materialism put the world in order. The further indictment is that these rational and materialistic forces have usurped the place of God and dismantled the ancient mythologies that once grounded our existence. This study examines the selected work of Saul Bellow and argues that his recurring themes of suffering, compassion, humanity, and renewal of the human spirit are antithetical to this collective existential angst. My argument introduces the doctrine of Existentialism and then explores the basic existentialist theory of Jean-Paul Sartre. From this platform, I later establish that Bellow takes a stand against this collective nihilism in favor of community and the celebration of life that are defined by a moral framework. Bellow's most representative novel in this vein of existential dislocation is Dangling Man. / From this novel, I argue that there is an inherent flaw in the notion that man's essential existence can only be defined through his agency as an individual, and that man, not God, is ultimately responsible for his actions and destiny. This pursuit of existence based on personal freedom and intellectual synthesis is prone to failure; Bellow's point of view is that the existentialist, having disconnected himself from God and community, plunges into an abyss fraught with angst and turmoil. Bellow's theme of humanity instructs that our redemption lies not in our personal quest, but in our absorption and participation in a community framed by moral precepts and the respect for God. Finally, and from another angle and through Bellow's Herzog, I establish a connection to Buddhism. From these Buddhist allusions, I further affirm that the quest for authentic existence and redemption demands a confrontation with our angst and an acknowledgement of our suffering. / by Jerry Durbeej. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2010. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.

Test of this is in the fact of that the year of 2010 was declared, for the Organization of United Nations (ONU), the year of Biodiversity. As its official site is about a celebration of the life in the land and the valuation of the diversity of the life. In the reply the question how much at the rate of the ONU to have chosen the year of 2010, explicit one that the man is integrant part of the nature and has the power to protect it or to destroy it. The present research has as deep cloth of the reflection that involves the environment and the year of Biodiversity. Initially the intention was to use the term environment in the comeniano thought, however, for if dealing with a term of the current society, it was understood that more it would be adjusted, to discourse regarding the relation of the man with the nature, having as focus two workmanships of John Comenius: Great Didactics and Pampaedia. Therefore, it had as objective principal of the research to identify in the thought of John Comenius the relation of the man of the one with the nature. For in such a way, it was broken of the norteador principle of that John Comenius demonstrated in the Great Didactics and in its Pampaedia he had concern in waving for its world that an improper relation of the man with the nature, over all, when this of it if uses for exploratórios ends and incompatible with the purpose for which she was servant, it makes with that it suffers and with it the human being.

Its use by humanity dates from prehistory. In fact, it is an area of human knowledge that has its own language and, although it does not replace words, does not require them to express a message. Hallawell (2004) defines the design as the interpretation of any reality - emotional, visual, mental - expressed graphically. On the other hand, Gomes (1996) proposes a distinction between drawing as graphical representation , called Sketching by him and drawing that indicates planning , mental intention, which the author calls design. At Renaissance, Mathematics, Geometry and other sciences resources associated with design allowed unique masterpieces productions, which pictures - made on flat surfaces - have three-dimensionality and light and shadow play. In this technique, Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) figured as greater name because the tones of light and dark present in drawings and paintings by this artist surpassed those found in his time - a time where it was aimed, as never before, represent the real through art. In this conflicted period - Renaissance - Leonardo composed ?Coition of a Hemisected Man and Woman?, the drawing of a sexual relation anatomy. And, as all artists when print information in their Works are not always aware of their creative act, from the question "What elements or componentes of sexuality are represented in Coition of a Hemisected Man and Woman by Leonardo da Vinci? " we conducted an iconographic study aiming to reveal the elements of sexuality present in the mentioned masterpiece, verifying how it connotes or denotes these elements. To Renaissance culture - ruled by the Church thoughts, however, getting rid of it ? it would be a sacrilege to represent the interior of human bodies during full intercourse. However, by investigating this "sacrilege" committed by Da Vinci, we could find valuable information nowadays. We have gone through a two-way road to reach our goals, which, regarding to the specific ones were to analyze the drawing aforementioned, relating it to three multifaces of Drawing (subject area): art, design, and graph (meaning graphic representation); identify elements / components of sexuality present in the masterpiece; relate design, health and sexuality from the image, that is, to bring them afloat through designed graphic content that makes up the work and highlight the importance of drawing and image which has elements of health, as the case of sexuality. On the way, we looked for the drawing of "Intercourse" in books and specialized websites; after finding it, we detailed the whole masterpiece in a moment called pre-iconographic description. We checked Leonardo?s artistic mottos associated with his knowledge of human health. And we allowed the drawing image to be the foreground, providing us to unveil its components. Thus, Drawing through its unique language exposed in "Coition" elements of sexuality sublimated in the lines and traces that compose it, referencing the social equilibrium through sexuality, drawn by the art of drawing, in this case, to help people produce health on respect of life, without neglecting the spirituality of this being so bio-psycho-socio-cultural that is the human being. No trajeto, buscamos o desenho do ?Coito? em livros e sites especializados; ap?s encontr?-lo, detalhamos toda a obra, no momento chamado descri??o pr?-iconogr?fica.

Sexualidade masculina e saúde do homem na estratégia de saúde da família: trabalhando com a equipe a pesquisa-ação / Masculine sexuality and the man health in the family health strategy: working with the team the research-action

Silva, Vanessa Luzia Queiroz 24 March 2010 (has links)
The present study is centered in the perspective of to supply subsidies for the health promotion and the masculine sexuality in the Health Primary Attention to contribute to discussions and proposals to carry out Politics Whole Attention to the man health on the process effects related to sexuality and gender. Moreover, we search for through it to become opportune the human resources qualification, in the perspective of to subsidize care ways which protect the integrality, Above all in the primary attention through the family health strategy, from the re cognition that the masculine population access fewer the health system and that this access happens especially through specializes attention and this requires processes the primary attention strengthen and qualification in order that the health actions don\'t be restricted to the recovery, guaranteeing, mainly the health promotion and prevention to avoid aggravations. OBJECTIVE: understand the meaning that the workers of Family Health Strategy give to masculine sexuality and to cares of men health in socio-cultural context, as well as, develop an educational activity with the peoples of the study, from the research action with theoretician methodical of Paulo Freire. METHODOLOGY: This study is a quality and humanist kind and deals with understanding and based on the research-action. The place of this research accomplishment was the Family Health Unity of Penha I, also knew as Sebastião Lucio Ferreira. The workers that compose the Family Health Team of Penha-I and who represents the study people are: a doctor, a nurse, a nursing technical, six health community agents and a receptionist. For the collection of data it had been utilized the semi-structured interview and the observation participated involving all the members of this team, which accept voluntarily participate of this study. The data gotten from the speech get out by people researched, as well by the observation participating had been transcribed, typed, analyzed qualitatively, and therefore, categorized from the Freire referential (1992). RESULTS: The results reveal the prevalence of the masculine ideal associated to the success, the power, the strength, the virility and the invulnerability, explained through the perception compatible with this masculine ideal, since these results reveal, in a simple way, the associations of being a man with male assignments, authoritarianism, strength and command, beyond the extreme sexuality and virility valorization. However, we understand that when the men try to follow this model, end up by behave in a way expressionless and competitive, and this compromises their basic needs. We show, also, the necessity of the man health attention priority through the Family Health Team, from the health politics that assures their rights as a people in attention, as well the education to the health workers in the way of integrality.
