O romance O Escravo (1856), de José Evaristo de Almeida no sistema literário português / The movel the Slave (1856), de José Evaristo de Almeida on this portuguese literary sistem.

Susanne Maria Lima Castrillon 25 February 2011 (has links)
With your action passed in Cabo Verde, The movel the Slave (1856), de José Evaristo de Almeida in entailed at history of the caboverdian literature, considery for any critiques what one nativism movel from that literature. The way of focusing the question there do seek reflected with your position this ambit of Portuguese literature, showing that, althought the occupy one marginal place in this Portuguese literary system, in this movel it dialogue, thematically, with European literary, in its intertextual act of reporting on the movel Die Verloburg In St Domingo (The married in St. Domingo), in Bernd Henrich Von Kleist and Bug-Jargal, in Victor Hugo.

O cativeiro à sombra: estrutura da posse de cativos e família escrava no Grão-Pará (1810-1888) / Slavery in the Shadows: Slaveholding Patterns and Slave Family in Grão-Pará, Brazil (1810-1888)

Daniel Souza Barroso 29 June 2017 (has links)
The socioeconomic relevance of African slavery in the Amazon was an issue in the many interpretations of the region\'s historical formation. From its complete disregard to a notion of premature loss of importance, the role of slaves in the nineteenth-century Pará economy remains in an opaque zone in historiography. This dissertation aims to examine slavery in Grão- Pará throughout the 19th century through a serial analysis based on probate inventories of two core economic and demographic elements of slavery: the slaveholding patterns and the slave family. Given the existence of a mutual conditioning between the economics and the demography of slavery, this study presents the thesis that the endogenous reproduction of slaves represented a primordial element for maintaining the economic importance of slavery in Grão- Pará throughout the 1800s, at least in the cases of the three regions of Pará privileged in this dissertation: the capital Belém and the leading agricultural spaces of Lower Tocantins and the Guajarina Zone.

Marcia Cristina Roma de Vasconcellos 06 October 2006 (has links)
Portanto, com o presente estudo, desejamos contribuir para a produção do conhecimento sobre a escravidão e o litoral sul-fluminense, trazendo à tona a história das famílias cativas / In Angra dos Reis, in the first half of the XIX century, the local population was devoted to the selfconsumption and internal market. The commerc and transportation grew, as its ports were one of the main means of outlet of the coffee from the vleey of the Paraiba river in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, making the economy more dynamic. However, during the second half of XIX century, a panel of economic and demographic transformations was gradually settedresulting from the end of slave-traffic and the decreasing of the port activity due to the arrival of the D. Pedro II Raiboad to the valley. In face of this panorama, we analysed the characteristics and the degree of stability of the slave families between 1801 and 1888 and in which way they were affected in the second half of the XIX century. Such reflexions had as a paramater the two basic nuclei of family: the ones composed of the compe with or without children and those composed of urmarried mothers and their children. Post-mortem inventories and baptism and weddingregisters were the main sources used. We also evaluated themes like the wedding, the motherhood, the sexual intercourse, the big families yhe fraternal families and the baptism, We carried out a map of the economy verifying the evolving of the structure of slaves ownership, the types of productions initiated, as well as the demographic profile of the free and captive populations. For this, we handled docunments like the Jornal do connercio, the Almmanak Laemmert, the 1840, 1850 and 1856 census, the 1872 National Census and the reports of travelers and chroniclers. Therefore, with the present study, we wish to contribute to the production of Knowledge about slavery and the coast in the south osf Rio de Janeiro, bringing the history of the captive families to light

This work aims to analyze how the Bahia's newspaper Correio Mercantil, between the years of 1836 and 1849, ran articles about the free and slave revolts, the slave trade of Africans to Brazil and of slavery itself, trying to understand the political interests that determined these publications. To this end, we are interested to understand the influence of the rebellions in the period, and the ways in which they were conveyed, as well as the relationship that was established between free and slave revolts and the use of the fear of political elites of the province in relation to the large number of Africans and the colored population in Bahia. It is also important to understand how Correio understood the formation of Brazil in the post-independence, especially in regard to individuals who should build and be part of the identity of Brazil, the condition of citizenship and the institution of slavery. Finally, it is essential to examine how the newspaper approached the debates and proceedings arising from the 1831 law, which prohibited the slave trade to Brazil, and which interests their writers had in certain debates and vehicle news, silencing others. These lines of analysis have been developed in order to unveil the strategies of both arguments and production, used by Correio Mercantil in order to defend the maintenance of order, law, property and power relations of slavery / Mestrado / Historia Social / Mestre em História

In this dissertation, a detailed discussion of the mercantile and honorific route of Elias Antonio Lopes is explored. Elias was the greatest dealer, who played a significant role in the Rio de Janeiro imperial market by the ends of XVIII century and the first years of XIX century. He emigrated from the Porto city, Portugal, to the Rio de Janeiro, probably in the year of 1770 in order to get a chance in the market place of Rio de Janeiro. He got a great fortune from different facets of the mercantile area such as slave trade, the getting of royal contracts, as well as getting from internal and foreign markets. As a trader, he could assemble a great deal of benefices (mercês), which were fundamental in order to get social nobility in the XVIII, when the Portuguese royals arrived in 1808. All these took place after the donating of his own farmland in São Cristóvão, neighbourhood, the future Portuguese royal house. In this sense, it is discussed here that the aristocratic ideal in that time was commonplace in the beginnings of the XIX century, when the traders used to urge in getting social status by acquisition of titles through services provided to Dom João. Elias Antonio Lopes passed away in the year of the 1815 leaving a great inheritance, eagerly rivaled by his heirs and the Portuguese Crown, as he did not leave any testament. Therefore, this study is a large passing through of his route since his emigration to Rio de Janeiro, his honorific dealings in the mercantile marketing, ending up with his suddenly death and the eagerly rivalry of his properties.

In the 1990s , when the Brazilian government admitted the existence of the phenomenon in the country , numerous governmental actions have sought to suppress and combat this illegal form of work, chief among which is the creation of PERFOR (1992 ) and the National Plan for the Eradication of Slave Labor (2003 ) . The objective of this dissertation is to describe the representations of institutional actors involved in the case of Bage ( RS ) on the phenomenon of modern-day slavery . The pyruvic context of this research is related to a case of overexploitation of labor occurred in the city of Bage ( RS ) in 2008 . The results of this research show that institutional agents perceive the practice of contemporary slave labor differently and that , although they belong to different professional categories , the representations that have the phenomenon are not as conflicting.

IM’A and NAME : a Comparative Study of Germanic and Slavic Given Names with their oldest manifestations among the Anglo-Saxons and the Russians.

Boiché, Olga 09 November 2012 (has links)
The present dissertation is a philological and historical analysis of the oldest Germanic and Slavic given names. The corpus comprises the Germanic names attested before the end of the 5th century, the names of Germanic women attested before the end of the 7th century, the Slavic names attested before the end of the 9th century and the Russian names attested before the end of the 14th century. I analyse the cultic et cultural notions expressed in the personal names and shared by both traditions such as: sacrality of the hero chosen by gods, veneration of the ancestors and belief in their rebirth, belief in female guardian spirits, the desire and hope of wealth for the progeny. The belief in the protective force of the apotropaic names isanalysed from examples of names expressing negative emotions toward the child, names referring to a wolf and names with an obscene meaning. The close examination of German and Slavic female names reveals and explains the predominance of warlike anthroponomical themes among the former and their absence among the latter.

"Cožpak nejsem člověk a bratr?": Reprezentace otroctví v Západní Indii a abolicionistická rétorika na cestě k emancipaci / "Am I Not a Man and a Brother?": Representations of Slavery in the West Indies and Abolitionist Rhetoric on the Road to Emancipation

Bartová, Nikola January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with literature connected with the abolition of slavery in British colonies. The thesis will treat the topic of the abolitionist movement from the perspective of social, cultural and literary history from the beginnings until the abolition of slavery in British colonies in the Caribbean in 1833 with the Slavery Abolition Act. The thesis will focus on the discourse of race and slavery. The chosen authors represent different opinions and perspectives as the discussion will focus on sentimental poetry, travel writings as well as slave narratives. The chief aim is to identify and define the strategies of abolitionist discourse and the rhetorical practices which it employed especially in shaping the image of Africans and how the hegemonic discourse of sentimentalism influenced their writing. The first part of the thesis is concerned with establishing a theoretical background and the establishing of the literary traditions and customs of the eighteenth century, definition of the sentimental discourse and philosophies of the Enlightenment. This will be framed by a definition of Edward Said's "Orientalism" as well as Paul Gilroy's theory of the "Black Atlantic," which will enable us to define the space between Britain, Africa and the Caribbean, where the history of slavery of...

Atlantic Ais in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries: Maritime Adaptation, Indigenous Wrecking, and Buccaneer Raids on Florida’s Central East Coast

Ferdinando, Peter J 26 March 2015 (has links)
The Ais were a Native American group who lived along the Atlantic shoreline of Florida south of Cape Canaveral. This coastal population’s position adjacent to a major shipping route afforded them numerous encounters with the Atlantic world that linked Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas. Through their exploitation of the goods and peoples from the European shipwrecks thrown ashore, coupled with their careful manipulation of other Atlantic contacts, the Ais polity established an influential domain in central east Florida during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The pre-contact peoples of Florida’s east coast, including the ancestors of the Ais, practiced a maritime adaptation concentrated on the exploitation of their bountiful riverine, estuarine, and marine environments. The Ais then modified their maritime skills to cope with the opportunities and challenges that accompanied European contact. Using their existing aquatic abilities, they ably salvaged goods and castaways from the Spanish, French, English, and Dutch vessels dashed on the rocks and reefs of Florida’s coast. The Ais’ strategic redistribution of these materials and peoples to other Florida Native Americans, the Spaniards of St. Augustine, and other passing Europeans gained them greater influence. This process, which I call indigenous wrecking, enabled the Ais to expand their domain on the peninsula. Coastal Florida Native Americans’ maritime abilities also attracted the attention of Europeans. In the late seventeenth century, English buccaneers and salvagers raided Florida’s east coast to capture indigenous divers, whom they sent to work the wreck of a sunken Spanish treasure ship located in the Bahamas. The English subsequently sold the surviving Native American captives to other Caribbean slave markets. Despite population losses to such raids, the Ais and other peoples of the east coast thrived on Atlantic exchange and used their existing maritime adaptation to resist colonial intrusions until the start of the eighteenth century. This dissertation thus offers a narrative about Native Americans and the Atlantic that is unlike most Southeastern Indian stories. The Ais used their maritime adaptation and the process of indigenous wrecking to engage and exploit the arriving Atlantic world. In the contact era, the Ais truly became Atlantic Ais.

Abstract: The presented work aimed to study the slave master's conceptions about freedom within the years 1855 and 1871, as well a period of time in which there was a increase of debates about the liberty of the slaves - focusing the ascendant Campinas city. My main purpose was to understand the mind who promised freedom to their slaves and simutaneously had been formuling their own will. I have based my research on these documents, in which I could investigate them closely - analysing the way how properties and donations were divided and written down on these papers, the logic of the masters on maintenance of their wealth at the same time, as well what stimulated them and their strategies for guarantying of power - even after the death - over their heirs and the potential free people who have been slaving by them before. Thus, I have tried to understand the slave's freedom in this kind of giver mindedness. Hence, it is possible to construct the master profile who free their slaves in a deed and the categories of liberties granted, as well to go into a matter how they saw the power of themselves and which reactions had been happening on society on their days. I also have worked on many authors thinking who approched the social and simbolic mechanisms enrolled on the concept of gift. / Mestrado / Historia / Mestre em História
