A convenção de 1817: debate político e diplomático sobre o tráfico de escravos durante o governo de D. João no Rio de Janeiro / The convention of 1817: political and diplomatic debates about slave trade during the government of D. João in the Rio de Janeiro

Guilherme de Paula Costa Santos 29 June 2007 (has links)
This study analyzes the arranging and the impact of the Convention of 1817, signed by the English and Portuguese governments. Adding articles to the Treaty of 1815, which forbade the slave trade north of the Equator, the bilateral arrangement of 1817 established the reciprocal Right of Search of warships and Mixed Courts (Commissions) in order to judge Slavers who had ignored the commitment of Treaty of 1815. From the time of the Convention, this work intends to reevaluate the deal between Portuguese ambassadors and British diplomacy; to better understand the decisions decreed by D. João in respects to the slave trade; and to point out some of the aspects of political debates concerning the future of the Portuguese Monarchy, during the sojourn of the Real Court in Rio de Janeiro at the end of the decade of 1810.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Cristiana Eugenia Nese.pdf: 903270 bytes, checksum: 2e4e0b69971b85667539fd6e4f9e3322 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-10-05 / The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the application of the constitutional principle of human dignity in the current legal relations between employees and employers. The globalization of the economy, the inversion of values, lack of ideological traditions brought by fluid modernity as understood by Zygmunt Bauman , directly affect the relations between capital and labor. The holders of economic power became more demanding and labor, by circumstances, more submissive. Given this perspective, we see the " commodification " of human being by capitalism. In this area will be analyzed, the use of slave labor analogous to slavery and contemporary slavery, that regardless of the nomenclature adopted, any of the three mentioned practices are reprehensible and should be hard fought, pointing out the constitutional principle of human dignity essential core of human rights, such as limiting these atrocities . Throughout the research objective is to reflect the application of the constitutional principle of human dignity in labor relations on a globalized world, as a way to combat inhumane or degrading practices that still exist in our country work under a critical eye on attempt that such practices are permanently banned from our system. Thus it tries to stimulate the discussion on this pressing topic that is essential not only to those involved in Human Rights, but the whole society in search of new options for decent development. The method of reasoning and approach of this study was developed based on documentary and bibliographic research , using the hypothetical- deductive method as the main , historical and statistical methods as auxiliary.

Multi-Orbital Physics in Materials with Strong Electronic Correlations : Hund's Coupling and Inter-Shell Interactions / Physique multi-orbitalaire dans les matériaux corrélés : Couplage de Hund et interactions inter-couches

Steinbauer, Jakob 24 October 2019 (has links)
The physics of correlated materials offers a wealth of new phenomena, many of which are not yet - or only partially - understood. In this thesis, we focus on multi-orbital models, which we study using various methods, including dynamical mean-field theory. We show that in the multi-orbital Hubbard model close to the Mott transition, Hund's coupling gives rise to a bad metal regime the properties of which we analyze. Furthermore, we consider a more general class of models that include oxygen ligands. More specifically, we study the effect of inter-shell interactions between correlated metal- and ligand p-orbitals. In this context, we develop and test a new slave-rotor approach to treat such interactions in an effective manner. The final chapter constitutes an excursion to the field of molecular spintronics, where we study the physics of the hybridization-induced spin-state switching in organometallic nickel porphyrin molecules.

New England Slave Trader: The Case of Charles Tyng

Michaels, Paul J. 01 June 2019 (has links)
Charles Tyng has been heralded as an American hero after the posthumous publication of his memoir, Before the Wind: The Memoir of an American Sea Captain, 1808-1833, in 1999. Recent research involving British Treasury report books from the nineteenth century suggest otherwise – that Tyng actively promoted and was engaged in the illicit trade of African captives. A Boston Brahmin, Tyng applied the lessons of his time at sea with Perkins & Company, the opium trading firm, to his occupation as an agent of notorious slave trading firms in Havana. This paper uses as evidence records of the captures of several vessels that implicate Tyng directly in equipping ships for the slave trade to correct the historical record and exposing a supposed hero as a predatory capitalist ignoring ethics for financial gain.

"It's the Englishness" : Bildung and Personality Forming as Postcolonial Criticism in Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions

Nyoni Triyono, Johan January 2020 (has links)
Through a close reading of Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions, this essay shows the key links between the novel and Frantz Fanon’s major works. In addition to providing a deeper understanding of Dangarembga’s narrative as a whole, it takes into particular consideration the embedded criticism of colonialism in the text. The psychological conditions implied by the title play a central role: the essay shows how these conditions relate to the colonial situation and how refusing to consent to subjugation can be understood as radical criticism of colonial, Christian, as well as patriarchal superstructures as well as forming clear opposition to the colonial institution. The analysis is primarily based on Fanon and his comprehension of other theorists. It also draws on the ideas of Homi K. Bhabha, which will provide an additional level of understanding regarding questions about colonial identities in general, and Dangarembga’s characters Tambu, Nyasha, and Babamukuru in particular.

Development of a Three-Dimensional Mesh Generator With Analytical Mesh Sensitivities

Bam, Campbell A. January 2020 (has links)
Structural shape optimisation is a field that has been studied since early on in the development of finite element methods. The sub-fields of shape and topology optimisation are continuously growing in industry and aim to leverage the benefits of technologies such as 3D printing and additive manufacturing. These fields are also being used to optimise designs to improve quality and reduce cost. Gradient-based optimisation is well understood as an efficient method of obtaining solutions. In order to implement gradient-based optimisation methods in the context of structural shape optimisation, sensitivities describing the change of the domain stiffness are required. To obtain the stiffness sensitivities, mesh deformation sensitivities are required. In this study, a mesh generating method is developed that provides mesh deformation sensitivities. For shape optimisation it is advantageous to employ an optimisation algorithm that allows for the manipulation of CAD geometry. This means that the CAD geometry is finalised upon completion of the optimisation process. This, however, necessitates the calculation of accurate sensitivities associated with non-linear geometries, such as NURBS (those present in CAD), by the mesher. The meshing method developed in this study is analogous to a linear truss system. The system is solved for static equilibrium through a geometrically non-linear finite element analysis using Newton’s method. Sensitivities are made available by Newton’s method for use in generating mesh sensitivities for the system. It is important for the mesher to be able to accurately describe the geometrical domain which approximates the geometry being modelled. To do so, nodes on the boundary may not depart from the boundary. Instead of prescribing all boundary nodes, this mesher frees the boundary nodes to move University of Pretoria ii Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering along, but not away from the boundary. This is achieved using multipoint constraints since they allow for an analytical relationship between boundary node movement and the boundary. Two multipoint constraint (MPC) methods are investigated for boundary discretisation, namely, the Lagrangian and master-slave elimination methods (MSEM). The MSEM presents several difficulties in obtaining convergence on non-linear boundaries in general when compared to the Lagrangian method. The MSEM has reduced computational requirements for a single Newton step, especially when direct solvers are used. However, when indirect solvers are implemented the time difference between the two MPC methods reduces significantly. For a “medium” curvature geometry the Lagrangian implementation has only a 6% time penalty. The Lagrangian method is selected as the preferred MPC method for implementation in the mesher to avoid the convergence problems associated with the MSEM. This is justified on the basis of reliability outweighing the 6% time penalty for what is intended to be a tool in the shape optimisation process. Analytical sensitivities are obtained for the truss system in order to account for the MPC boundaries. The analytical mesh sensitivities are proven to be accurate through comparison with numerical sensitivities. The method is demonstrated to be able to accurately described the mesh deformation throughout the domain for both uniform and non-uniform meshes in the presence of non-linear boundaries. / Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 2020. / Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering / MEng (Mech) / Unrestricted
