Incomplete conquests in the Philippine archipelago, 1565-1700

Mawson, Stephanie Joy January 2019 (has links)
The Spanish colonisation of the Philippines in 1565 opened up trade between China, Latin America and Europe via the Pacific crossing, changing the history of global trade forever. The traditional understanding of the early colonial period in the Philippines suggests that colonial control spread rapidly and peacefully across the islands, ushering in dramatic changes to the social, political and economic environment of the archipelago. This dissertation argues by contrast that the extent of Spanish control has been overstated - partially as a by-product of an over-reliance on religious and secular chronicles that sought to magnify the role and interests of the colonial state. Through extensive archival work examining different sites of colonial authority and power, I demonstrate that Philippine communities contested and limited the nature of colonisation in their archipelago. In making this argument, I challenge prevalent assumptions of indigenous passivity in the face of imperial expansion. By demonstrating the agency of Southeast Asians, particular actors come to the fore in each of the chapters: Chinese labourers, indigenous elites, fugitives and apostates, unpacified mountain communities, native priestesses and Moro slave raiders. The culture and social organisation of these Southeast Asian communities impacted on the nature of Spanish imperialism and the capacity for the Spanish to retain and extend their control. Throughout the seventeenth century, the Spanish presence within the archipelago was always tenuous. A number of communities remained outside of Spanish control for the duration of the century, while still others oscillated between integration and rebellion, by turns participating in and resisting the consolidation of empire. These communities continued to maintain their local and regional economies and customs. Thus, by the end of the seventeenth century, imperial control remained fragmented, partial and incomplete. The dissertation contributes not only to the historiography of the Philippines - which remains under-explored - but also to the historiographies of Colonial Latin America, Southeast Asia and early modern empires. Conceptualising the Philippines as a frontier space helps to overturn the foundations of the myth of a completed conquest. This dissertation thus raises questions about the inevitability of empire by arguing that indigenous communities were active respondents to Spanish colonisation attempts and that indigenous traditions and culture in this region were both resilient and enduring in the face of colonial oppression.

Livelihood and status struggles in the mission stations of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa (UMCA), north-eastern Tanzania and Zanzibar, 1864-1926

Greenfield-Liebst, Michelle January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is about the social, political, and economic interactions that took place in and around the Universities’ Mission to Central Africa (UMCA) in two very different regions: north-eastern Tanzania and Zanzibar. The mission was for much of the period a space in which people could – often inventively – make a living through education, employment, and patronage. Indeed, particularly in the period preceding British colonial rule, most Christians were mission employees (usually teachers) and their families. Being Christian was, in one sense, a livelihood. In this era before the British altered the political economy, education had only limited appeal, while the teaching profession was not highly esteemed by Africans, although it offered some teachers the security and status of a regular income. From the 1860s to the 1910s, the UMCA did not offer clear trajectories for most of the Africans interacting with it in search of a better life. Markers of coastal sophistication, such as clothing or Swahili fluency, had greater social currency, while the coast remained a prime source of paid employment, often preferable to conditions offered by the mission. By the end of the period, Christians were at a social and economic advantage by virtue of their access to formal institutional education. This was a major shift and schooling became an obvious trajectory for future employment and economic mobility. Converts, many of whom came from marginal social backgrounds, sought to overcome a heritage of exploitative social relations and to redraw the field for the negotiation of dependency to their advantage. However, as this thesis shows, the mission also contributed to new sets of exploitative social relations in a hierarchy of work and education.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jefferson Mariano Santana.pdf: 1158195 bytes, checksum: 716dd97b639667ff79a5e6121a6bd066 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-09-12 / The purpose of this dissertation is to present, through the Narrative by Fernão Cardim, his secretary, with whom he was present as the visit of Father Cristóvão de Gouveia, designated Visitor of the Province of Brazil by the General of the Company of Jesus, Cláudio Aquaviva, between 1583 and 1585. It was proposed to analyze the situation encountered by the Visitor and Fernão Cardim, facing a scenario that had internal problems of the Company of Jesus, such as the lack of missionary fervor, the use of slave labor by autochthons and negroes of Guinea and external problems with the conflict between settlers and Jesuits by exploiting the work of the Indians and their temporal administration in the villages. In this sense, this work shows how the visitor Cristóvão de Gouveia solved the problems in the province, starting from his effective action in spaces important for the missionary project as, for example, the villages, sugar mills, colleges, with measures that aimed to provide the realization of catechesis and, above all, to undertake the colonization of Brazil, which is why the intense participation of the Portuguese Crown in this missionary process is justified / O objetivo desta dissertação é apresentar através da Narrativa de Fernão Cardim seu secretário, com quem aqui esteve como transcorreu a visita do Padre Cristóvão de Gouveia, designado Visitador da Província do Brasil pelo Geral da Companhia de Jesus, Cláudio Aquaviva, entre 1583 – 1585.

Considering an eclectic and historical scope of analysis, this dissertation will argue about the execution of a mixed administrative system, based on institutional nodes interconnected in a form of network system, operated on the behalf of an overseas jurisdictional space. Casting some questions related to the different situations concerned with the Portuguese Expansion in the West Central Africa, as well as reflecting some inquiries posed by the recent historiography, here we stand for a settle of ambivalent and ambiguous series of movements emerged from the Portuguese Angolas overseas domain, calling up for the importance of some political and institutional forms of proceedings. They were all managed in order to resolve some issues related with the Portuguese Angola, paying attention to the recruitment and mobilizations of the Portuguese war machine, elucidating how the local political actors interacted with the conquistas and how was carried out the institutional and economical relations between Luanda and the interior entrepôts. All the internal hierarchies and luso-african contacts was settled down in a conflictive environment, crossed through social tensions, institutional frictions and political shocks. Finally, we conclude that some forms of domination and intermediation in the Portuguese Angola were sustained by a correlation between juxtapositions and agglutinations, but only if two demands were attended: the enlargement of the economical exploitation through the transatlantic slave trade and the institutional and political penetration of the African continent.

Gomes, Luciano Costa January 2012 (has links)
This paper aims to present an analysis of the dynamics of demographic, social and economic structures in Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande de São Pedro, in its formative period (from 1772 to 1800). The main sources consulted were of confessed sterols, neighborhood relations, maps of production and population, and books of marriage and baptism. In the first three chapters of this dissertation, the population characteristics and its modifications, the differences between urban and rural areas and the distribution of slaveholding are analyzed. In the fourth and fifth chapters present the study of the local agrarian structure, family networks and farmers’ strategies. In the last two chapters the family and crony slave are discussed. The central argument supported is that Porto Alegre, in its first decades of existence, showed strong dependence on slavery. The parish has experienced a significant growth of population due largely to the increase in the number of captives. Its urbanized core showed up quite developed, concentrating most population, including slaves. There were many captives and they were distributed in small farms. The agrarian frontier was closed and there is strong evidence pointing a process of social differentiation among farmers. In assessing the conditions under which emerged slave families, it was found that the productive activity of the master, the size of the possession of captive and the origin of the slaves, are important factors to be considered. Meanwhile, the choice of godparents experienced a profound transformation over the period, a process which focused on changes in the structure of slave ownership, changes in the dynamics of trafficking, as well as the limits and possibilities posed by social networks manor. The economy and society of Porto Alegre, in its first decades of existence, can indeed be classified as slavery.

Human Trafficking and Slavery: Towards a New Framework for Prevention and Responsibility

Hathaway, Dana S. 01 January 2012 (has links)
Human trafficking and slavery are horrific crimes that require strict penalties for perpetrators and effective protections for survivors, but these crimes are in part facilitated by a system of laws and norms that effectively marginalize certain populations--the "unskilled" migrant. In this thesis I aim to reexamine and reinterpret the problem of human trafficking and slavery in a way that highlights the background conditions to the problem. I argue that the framework used as a conceptual foundation for addressing the problem limits the scope of responsibility. Specifically, the framework fails to acknowledge structural contributing factors I show to be relevant: law, policy, and norms impacting immigration and migrant labor. I assert that the limited scope of responsibility, which focuses heavily on direct perpetrators of the crime, leaves largely unexamined the role of social-structural processes in contributing to the problem. I use the United States as a case study in order to provide a targeted analysis of social-structural processes that contribute to the problem. In this examination of the United States, I focus on agricultural and domestic slavery. In conclusion, I attempt to build a new conceptual framework that calls attention to social-structural processes and includes this understanding in assigning responsibility for the problem. I assert that anti-trafficking efforts must account for the role of social-structural processes and that these contributing factors must be adequately addressed and incorporated into the framework for prevention.

Bourian ou la danse des maîtres : circulations et enjeux identitaires des Agudàs, les Brésiliens du Bénin / Bourian, or the dance of the masters : circulation and identity issues among the Agudas, the Brazilians of Benin

De Athayde, Joao Augusto 21 November 2018 (has links)
The Agudas, also known as "the Brazilians of Benin", are the descendants of both slave traders and former slaves who "returned" from Brazil to today's Benin, Togo and Nigeria during the 19th century. To this day, they base their identity on evocations of their Brazilian origins. One of the main identity markers of the Agudas is the festival of the Bourian (a Portuguese word meaning "little she-donkey"), which brings Christians and Muslims together around a codified masquerade, where samba tunes are sung – with no understanding of their lyrics – in Portuguese, a language that is no longer spoken in this region of Africa. The various Bourian groups, often in competition with each other, evoke in a playful way their Brazilian ancestors, in a dynamic context where each local population carries out masquerades related to the vodoun. Focusing on Southern Benin, this thesis aims to understand the meaning of the Bourian, as well as the identity issues and circulations in which the Bourian is involved, while keeping an historical and comparative perspective with Brazil.

Stridfelt, Arvid January 2005 (has links)

This master thesis describes a design exploration of a circuit capable of measuring high speed signals without adding significant capacitive load to the measuring node.

It is designed in a 0.13 CMOS process with a supply voltage of 1.2 Volt. The circuit is a master and slave, track-and-hold architecture incorporated with a capacitive voltage divider and a NMOS source follower as input buffer to protect the measuring node and increase the input voltage range.

This thesis presents the implementation process and the theory needed to understand the design decisions and consideration throughout the design. The results are based on transistor level simulations performed in Cadence Spectre.

The results show that it is possible to observe the analog behaviour of a high speed signal by down converting it to a lower frequency that can be brought off-chip. The trade off between capacitive load added to the measuring node and input bandwidth of the measurment circuit is also presented.
