They are not only different words, but mean different viewpoints and can demarcate opposing perspectives of fields of knowledge regarding transsexual condition, one that defends the diversity of gender identities and one that conceives it as pathology. This research aims to situate the debate about depathologization of transsexuality in Brazil analyzing its discursive fields. On one hand, I try to identify who are the actors involved in the campaign and investigate how they are producing the debate, showing what kinds of mobilizations have been made and what are their main demands. On the other hand, I seek to identify and analyze the knowledge underlying the depathologization speeches and other discourses which are opposed to this perspective. I present and analyze the proposals of the campaign concerning the continuity of health/medical care as well as the maintenance of the rights of transsexuals in a possible depathologization of transsexuality.

Variations in Sex Differentiation : The Neurobiology of Gender Dysphoria

Rahm, Olivia January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this review paper was to investigate variations in sex differentiation, andalso, examine what neurobiological underpinnings there are to gender identity andgender dysphoria. In addition, the most extreme form of gender dysphoria, transsexuality, will be described from a neurobiological perspective but also discussedin terms of the classification from DSM-5. One theory considered on how genderidentity originates is the fact that the sexual differentiation of the brain and thedifferentiation of sexual organs develop during different time periods. Alterationswere displayed in a demonstration of male-to-female (MTF) and female-to-male(FTM) transsexuals that showed reversed results in cell number in a part of thehypothalamus, acronymized INAH-3 and reversal volume results in another region, acronymized BSTc. Likewise, differences in grey matter in the right putamendepended upon their natal gender. It can be concluded that there is biologicalevidence for sex differentiation and indications that lead science into consideringbiological components for gender dysphoria. This conclusion suggests for futureresearch questions focused more on the possible genetic factors of gender identity, also, consider larger sample sizes and more replications. There is still incompleteknowledge of what exactly constitutes an individual’s gender identity.

Fahlander, Kajsa January 2012 (has links)
Within this essay a study is made of an LGBTQ-orientated Christian service in Stockholm called Queer Service. The following questions seek to be answered: What reasons does an individual set for his/hers participation in Queer Service? Which aspects of a queer service highlight the participants as important to them? As a method to answer these questions, the author has observed a number of queer church services in autumn of 2012. Moreover communication within the group of the assembly on the social media page Facebook has been followed and five individuals from the Queer Service congregation have been interviewed. As a background to the study, the European religious climate seen from Grace Davies eyes is depicted.  The reader also learns of how the Swedish church has handled questions about homosexuality and bisexuality and what liberation theology is. An (incomplete) section on other existing services with LGBTQ orientation in Sweden and the USA has been added as well as background information on Queer Service. The results from the gathering of material and the analysis of it show that the interviewees perceive themselves in need of a safe place free of harassment or suspicion linked to sexual orientation or gender identity. Several interviewees also experienced a conflict between Christian faith and an LGBTQ personality - a conflict the service could help solve. Participation in the service was also motivated as a way to resist structures that confirmed heterosexuality as a norm. Another aspect important to the interviewees is Queer Service's emphasis on internal authority and its lack of a clear hierarchy.

Migrações sexuais e de gênero : experiências de mulheres transexuais

Petry, Analídia Rodolpho January 2011 (has links)
This research focuses on the processes of sexual and gender migration of subjects named by the medical discourse as women transsexuals that have undergone the transsexualization process in a hospital in Porto Alegre. The study is founded on the field of Cultural Studies, in articulation with the field of Gender Studies. The aim is to problematize the ways in which the processes of sexual and gender migration occur in transsexual subjects that underwent the sexual reassignment surgery at least two years ago, focusing primarily on the representations of gender, body, sex and sexuality that have been articulated in their trajectories. The methodology used in this study comprehends the life histories of seven transsexual women whose narrative interviews have been triggered by the sexual reassignment surgery called neovaginoplasty. Their narratives have produced two analysis units, approaching both the way the processes of sexual and gender migration have been narrated and the representations of body, gender and sexuality that have been mobilized. The articulations of gender, sexuality and body, while analytical tools, with the empirical data produced allowed us to delineate the flexibility, variety and the temporary character of identities and experiences that are mobilized by these processes, which raises important questions for social institutions and areas of knowledge that are involved with the production and delivery of psycho-biologists explanations as the genesis of sexual diversity. The reflections made in this research are important to widen and improve nursing care practices and health aimed at assisting transsexual subject in the social context. Topics related to gender and sexuality has been shortly addressed on process of training, especially in health.

Stocker, Pâmela Caroline January 2018 (has links)
This thesis investigates the meanings production and disputation in text-reader relationship when Brazilian reference journalism proposes new cultural maps of meaning about gender in its agenda. Through Discourse Analysis premises and a theoretical-methodological attitude inspired by Foucault's (1969) enunciative analysis, this research analyzed 2,460 reader’s comments. The comments were collected from seven different reports that addressed the transsexuality topic published on the Facebook of pages Galileu magazine, Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, Globo Repórter and Fantástico TV programs between 2015 and 2017. Since discourse’s possibilities are regulated by an “orders of discourse”, which means that each enunciation is understood as a good that has rules of appearance and appropriation and application conditions (FOUCAULT, 1971), this thesis aims to understand and problematize the meanings manifested by readers concerning new gender maps of meaning that were put in circulation by reference Brazilian journalism in different media. The analysis found seven meaning nucleuses that act on two directions: 1. In order to validate or invalidate the maps of meaning proposed by journalism, readers have mobilized meanings related to religiosity, biological explanations and references to prejudice. 2.In order to legitimize or delegitimize journalism, readers expressed meanings related to their social role, the approach classified as “ideological” or because of the scientific quality of news framings or publications. The meaning nucleus related to empathy was identified both to validate the new maps of meaning and to legitimize journalism. Considering the analysis of the entire sample of comments, it was observed that meanings production about identity and difference performed by the readers is directly related to the ways of journalism report making. The selection of more sensitive framings, distinct sources, more plural narrative strategies, the opening up to the other’s voice and experience and the complexity of the agenda – one that shows feminine values in a epistemological gender perspective - results in meanings which are more connected to empathy and readers’ openness to fairness, respect and compassion. By contrast, the harsher framings, the separations experiences of the characters, the attempt to simplify the subject, the usage of technical primary sources only, besides vertical and authoritarian narrative strategies – an approach identified as masculinist – give rise to meanings of maintenance and transformation of differences in inequalities and interdiction of new maps by readers. Finally, this research observed that journalism does not interact directly with its readers in the networking space, it prefers not to pronounce about the conversation produced in the comments space and remaining in its institutionalized place.

The emergency of the category of transsexuality at the intersection with biomedical techniques.

Carlos André Chaves Mack 24 February 2015 (has links)
Reflecting on the emergence of the category of transsexuality as we know it today and its social, political and subjective consequences, particularly from the second half of the twentieth century, we tried in this dissertation to discuss the context that enabled the phenomenon of technological medicalization of this category. By developing it, this research presents physicians and activists actors who established a negotiation process between the demand of transsexual individuals and biomedicines technical, legal and discursive possibilities. Initially, we sought to understand how medical professionals, psychiatrists and psychoanalysts, belonging to the science of sexology from the late nineteenth century, included in their discourses and practices sexual behaviors considered deviant at the time. Homosexuality and transvestism, representatives of these "perversions", were diagnostic and identity categories of fundamental importance for the inauguration of transsexuality as a medical and psychiatric nosological category and as a "human kind", in other words, a subjective form of gender experience and identity. Therefore, and considering the socio-cultural context and the hormonal and surgical biotechnological development at the time, we have the hypothesis that the creation of this category was only possible due to the embodiment in transgender individuals of technoscientific procedures that enabled the se anatomic and biological transformations to build the desired gender. The medicalization of transsexuality and its medical-legal regulation, while they are vectors of pathologization and stigma, allowed access to these body changes. This research discusses the access to these technologies, subject to obtaining the psychiatric diagnosis, and addresses the interactive relationship between the discursive and practical aspects of the medical category and transsexual activists and individuals, as well as its effects that illuminate this issue. Finally, in order to illustrate and understand the interaction between technology and the transsexual body, we describe and briefly discuss the main procedures applied in transsexual men and transsexual women in gender transition.

Geni e os direitos humanos: um retrato da violência contra pessoas trans no Brasil do século XXI / Geni and the human rights: a portrait of violence against trans people in Brazil in the twenty-first century

Ubirajara de None Caputo 12 September 2018 (has links)
The main purpose of this research is to discuss about violence against transvestites, transsexual women and transsexual men in contemporary Brazil. Its approach is based on the reports of Human Rights violations in this population, carried out through the Human Rights Hotline Service (Dial 100) of the Secretariat of Human Rights of the Presidency of the Republic. The following categories of violation have been identified: verbal aggressiveness, death threat/attempt, threats (except death), murder, discrimination, neglect, financial loss, physical violence and sexual violence. The frequency of violations by federation units, by category of violations and by categories of suspects, was quantitatively determined by relating them to each other. Most of the violations are perpetrated by men, except in cases of negligence, where the main violators are public institutions. Situations of violation concerning the contexts in the family, work, consumption, sexual exploitation and use of public services, especially in the areas of education, health, social assistance and security, were also described in a qualitative approach. Moreover, we aimed at the comprehension of the impacts of violence on the subjectivities of victims making use of the social humiliation concept. In the light of the outcomes of this research and other works held in various parts of the world, the conclusion is that transphobia is a cross-cultural phenomenon which is based on five axes linked to interdiction and reification: corporeal life interdiction, social life interdiction, political life interdiction, reification for sexual use and reification for derision
