Effects of heavy Higgs bosons in the hadronic production of top-quark pairs including QCD correctionsGaller, Peter 13 February 2018 (has links)
Large Hadron Collider untersucht. Insbesondere wird dabei auf das sogenannte
Zwei-Higgs-Duplettmodell eingegangen.
Zerfall in Topquarkpaare. / In this dissertation a possible extension of the standard model of particle
physics (SM) in the Higgs sector is investigated using top-quark pair
production at the Large Hadron Collider as a probe. In particular, the
so-called two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) is studied. The 2HDM introduces several spin-0
bosons (which are also called Higgs bosons) in addition to the SM Higgs boson.
In this thesis these additional Higgs bosons are assumed to be heavy enough to decay into a
top-antitop quark pair. Thus, the experimental signatures of these new
particles can be studied through observables of top-quark pair production.
To this end the resonant production of heavy neutral Higgs bosons and their decay into
top-quark pairs in calculated up to next-to-leading order corrections in the
QCD coupling constant retaining the full spin information of the top-antitop
pair. This allows to analyse spin dependent observables which can be more
sensitive to effects of heavy Higgs bosons than spin independent ones
especially in the case of top-antitop spin correlations. The additional
application of kinematical cuts on the phase space of top and antitop quarks
can enhance the sensitivity further. In this thesis a method is presented that
can be used to construct the spin correlation which is most sensitive to the
effects of heavy Higgs bosons on top-quark pair production.
Furthermore, it is shown that the next-to-leading order
corrections are required to construct observables which entail robust
predictions. The results for the next-to-leading order in the QCD coupling
constant presented in this thesis were the first ones given for resonant heavy
Higgs production and decay into top-quark pairs.

The energy scale of the 3-flavour Lambda parameterBruno, Mattia 27 April 2016 (has links)
Die Simulationen enthalten up, down und strange O(a)-verbesserte Wilson-Fermionenfelder. / In lattice computations all dimensionful observables have to be expressed in units of a reference scale and its determination is often the first step before proceeding to other quantities. In this thesis we describe the scale setting strategy for a new set of large-volume ensembles generated within the CLS effort. The simulations have been carried out including up, down and strange quark fields, discretized a là Wilson and following the O(a)-improvement program. The gauge field dynamics is implemented with the improved Luescher-Weisz action. To overcome the freezing of topology in simulations at small lattice spacings, open boundary conditions in the time direction have been adopted, together with twisted-mass reweighting, a technique to regularize and stabilize the fermionic contributions in the infrared region. In this thesis we discuss their implications on mesonic spectral quantities. We compute the lattice spacings, for our four values of β, using the pseudo-scalar decay constants, extracted in the presence of open boundary conditions. In addition to that, we determine the observable t0 and extrapolate it to the continuum.

Maximally twisted mass lattice QCD at the physical pion massKostrzewa, Bartosz 13 March 2017 (has links)
In computer simulations of Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics, the usage of unphysically large quark masses and the subsequent extrapolation of results to the physical value of the quark masses are major sources of systematic uncertainty. In this thesis, the feasibility and practicality of numerical simulations of Quantum Chromodynamics with physically light up and down quarks using the Wilson twisted mass quark discretisation are explored. Working in this regime is complicated firstly by the numerical expense of these simulations and secondly by the presence of potentially large lattice artefacts. The twisted mass discretisation is affected by an unphysical mass difference between the charged and neutral pions, rendering simulations at the physical charged pion mass infeasible if this mass splitting is too large. With the aim of reducing it, the Sheikholeslami-Wohlert term is added to the twisted mass fermion action and simulations with mass degenerate up and down quarks are then performed as a proof of concept. It is demonstrated that these simulations are stable and that the parameters of the lattice theory can be successfully tuned to correspond to the physical charged pion mass. Subsequently, the parameter tuning for simulations with mass degenerate up and down quarks as well as strange and charm quarks is explored and it is shown that it can be carried out in steps. As benchmark observables, the masses and decay constants of pseudoscalar mesons with light, strange and charm valence quarks are calculated and seen to largely reproduce their phenomenological values, even though continuum and infinite volume extrapolations are not performed. Light, strange and charm quark mass estimates are determined based on this data and also seen to coincide with phenomenological and other lattice determinations.

Chiral description and physical limit of pseudoscalar decay constants with four dynamical quarks and applicability of quasi-Monte Carlo for lattice systemsAmmon, Andreas 10 June 2015 (has links)
This work deals with the determination of decay constants and masses of the pion and D-s meson. This happens in the framework of lattice QCD, a lattice regularised form of QCD. The four dynamical fermions (up, down, strange and charm quark) are described by the twisted-mass approach (TM-QCD) featuring automatic O(a) improvement. The lattice spacing a has been determined using the pion mass and decay constant extrapolated to the physical point, which is determined by the physical ratio f_pi/m_pi. In order to obtain an accurate description, new formulae from Chi-PT, taking into account the special form of discretisation effects of TM-QCD have been employed. The determined results of a = 0.0899(13) fm (@ beta=1.9), a = 0.0812(11)fm (@ beta=1.95) and a = 0.0624(7) fm (@ beta=2.1) are approximately 5% larger than previous determinations (Baron et. al. 2010). This shift is most likely explained by the reduced range of pion masses (

Non-perturbative investigation of current correlators in twisted mass lattice QCDPetschlies, Marcus 27 June 2013 (has links)
We present an investigation of hadronic current-current correlators based on the first principles of Quantum Chromodynamics. Specifically we apply the non-perturbative methods of twisted mass lattice QCD with dynamical up and down quark taking advantage of its automatic O(a) improvement. As a special application we discuss the calculation of the hadronic leading order contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The latter is regarded as a promising quantity for the search for physics beyond the standard model. The origin of the strong interest in the muon anomaly lies in the persistent discrepancy between the standard model estimate and its experimental measurement. In the theoretical determination the hadronic leading order part is currently afflicted with the largest uncertainty and a dedicated lattice investigation of the former can be of strong impact on future estimates. We discuss our study of all systematic uncertainties in the lattice calculation, including three lattice volumes, two lattice spacings, pion masses from 650 MeV to 290 MeV and the quark-disconnected contribution. We present a new method for the extrapolation to the physical point that softens the pion mass dependence of a_mu^hlo and allows for a linear extrapolation with small statistical uncertainty at the physical point. We determine the contribution of up and down quark as a_mu^hlo(N_f=2) = 5.69 (15) 10^(-8). The methods used for the muon are extended to the electron and tau lepton and we find a_el^hlo(N_f=2) = 1.512 (43) 10^(-12) and a_tau^hlo(N_f=2) = 2.635 (54) 10^(-6). We estimate the charm contribution to a_mu^hlo in partially quenched tmLQCD with the result a_mu^hlo(charm) = 1.447 (24) (30) 10^(-9) in very good agreement with a dispersion-relation based result using experimental data for the hadronic R-ratio.

Fundamental parameters of QCD from non-perturbative methods for two and four flavorsMarinkovic, Marina 25 March 2014 (has links)
The non-perturbative formulation of Quantumchromodynamics (QCD) on a four dimensional space-time Euclidean lattice together with the finite size techniques enable us to perform the renormalization of the QCD parameters non-perturbatively. In order to obtain precise predictions from lattice QCD, one needs to include the dynamical fermions into lattice QCD simulations. We consider QCD with two and four mass degenerate flavors of O(a) improved Wilson quarks. In this thesis, we improve the existing determinations of the fundamental parameters of two and four flavor QCD. In four flavor theory, we compute the precise value of the Lambda parameter in the units of the scale Lmax defined in the hadronic regime. We also give the precise determination of the Schroedinger functional running coupling in four flavour theory and compare it to the perturbative results. The Monte Carlo simulations of lattice QCD within the Schroedinger Functional framework were performed with a platform independent program package Schroedinger Funktional Mass Preconditioned Hybrid Monte Carlo (SF-MP-HMC), developed as a part of this project. Finally, we compute the strange quark mass and the Lambda parameter in two flavour theory, performing a well-controlled continuum limit and chiral extrapolation. To achieve this, we developed a universal program package for simulating two flavours of Wilson fermions, Mass Preconditioned Hybrid Monte Carlo (MP-HMC), which we used to run large scale simulations on small lattice spacings and on pion masses close to the physical value.

The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle. In the standard model (SM)
of elementary particle physics it is produced predominantly in pairs by the strong interaction. The weak interaction enables the production of single top-quarks as well.
Despite its difficult experimental signature, the production of single top-quarks is interesting as it is complementary to the production of pairs. For instance single top-quarks
are highly polarized. As top quarks decay before they hadronize, the polarization affects
the decay products of the top quark in an experimentally accessible way. Furthermore,
the participation of bottom-quarks in the initial state allows a study of the corresponding
parton distribution functions.
This thesis makes phenomenological predictions for the SM by calculating cross sections
for the production of single top-quarks in association with two jets. Next-to-leading order
corrections in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) are taken into account. These corrections
are the most important contribution for precise predictions beyond the leading order
calculation. Precise theoretical predictions for cross sections are mandatory for the search
for new physics at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. In contrast to the QCD corrections
for the production of single top-quarks published in 2002 an additional particle in the
final state was taken into account. As a consequence, new partonic initial states and
contributions with exchange of color charge between the quark lines occur. As top quarks
decay rapidly into a W boson and a bottom quark, a consistent separation from the
production of top quark pairs and from the production of single top-quarks in association
with a W boson must be ensured.

New attempts for error reduction in lattice field theory calculationsVolmer, Julia Louisa 23 August 2018 (has links)
Lattice QCD is a very successful tool to compute QCD observables non-perturbatively from first principles. The therefore needed evaluation of the QCD path integral consists of two parts: first, sampling points are generated at which second, the path integral is evaluated. The first part is typically achieved by Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods which work very well for most applications but also have some issues as their slow error scaling and the numerical sign-problem. The second part includes the computation of quark connected and disconnected diagrams. Improvements of the signal-to-noise ratio have to be found since the disconnected diagrams, though their estimation being very noisy, contribute significantly to physical observables. Methods are proposed to overcome the aforementioned difficulties in both parts of the evaluation of the lattice QCD path integral and therefore to estimate observables more efficiently and more accurately.
For the computation of quark disconnected diagrams we tested the exact eigenmode reconstruction with deflation method and found that this method resulted in a 5.5-fold reduction of runtime. To address the difficulties of MCMC methods, we tested the recursive numerical integration method, which simplifies the evaluation of the integral. We applied the method in combination with a Gauss quadrature rule to the one-dimensional quantum-mechanical rotor and found that we can compute error estimates that scale exponentially to the correct result. A generalization to higher space-time dimensions can be done in the future. Additionally, we developed the symmetrized quadrature rules to address the sign-problem. We applied them to the one-dimensional QCD with a chemical potential and found that this method is capable of overcoming the sign-problem completely and is very efficient for models with one variable. Improvements of the efficiency for multi-variable scenarios can be made in the future.

Development and deployment of an Inner Detector Minimum Bias Trigger and analysis of minimum bias data of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron ColliderKwee, Regina 19 July 2012 (has links)
Soft inelastic QCD processes are the dominant proton-proton interaction type at the LHC. More than 20 of such collisions pile up within a single bunch-crossing at ATLAS, when the LHC is operated at design luminosity of L = 1034 cm−2 s−1 colliding proton bunches with an energy of p s = 14 TeV. Inelastic interactions are characterised by a small transverse momemtum transfer and can only be approximated by phenomenological models that need experimental data as input. The initial phase of LHC beam operation in 2009, with luminosites ranging from L = 1027 to 1031 cm−2 s−1, offered an ideal period to select single proton-proton interactions and study general aspects of their properties. As first part of this thesis, a Minimum Bias trigger was developed and used for data-taking in ATLAS. This trigger, mbSpTrk, processes signals of the silicon tracking detectors of ATLAS and was designed to fulfill efficiently reject empty events, while possible biases in the selection of proton-proton collisions is reduced to a minimum. The trigger is flexible enough to cope also with changing background conditions allowing to retain low-pT events while machine background is highly suppressed. As second part, measurements of inelastic charged particles were performed in two phase-space regions. Centrally produced charged particles were considered with a pseudorapidity smaller than 0.8 and a transverse momentum of pT > 0.5 or 1 GeV. Four characteristic distributions were measured at two centre-of-mass energies of p s = 0.9 and 7 TeV. The results are presented with minimal model dependency to compare them to predictions of different Monte Carlo models for soft particle production. This analysis represents also the ATLAS contribution for the first common LHC analysis to which the ATLAS, CMS and ALICE collaborations agreed. The pseudorapidity distributions for both energies and phase-space regions are compared to the respective results of ALICE and CMS.

Scattering amplitudes in four- and six-dimensional gauge theoriesSchuster, Theodor 06 October 2014 (has links)
We study scattering amplitudes in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), N = 4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and the six-dimensional N = (1, 1) SYM theory, focusing on the symmetries of and relations between the tree-level scattering amplitudes in these three gauge theories. We derive the tree level and one-loop color decomposition of an arbitrary QCD amplitude into primitive amplitudes. Furthermore, we derive identities spanning the null space among the primitive amplitudes. We prove that every color ordered tree amplitude of massless QCD can be obtained from gluon-gluino amplitudes of N = 4 SYM theory. Furthermore, we derive analytical formulae for all gluon-gluino amplitudes relevant for QCD. We compare the numerical efficiency and accuracy of evaluating these closed analytic formulae for color ordered QCD tree amplitudes to a numerically efficient implementation of the Berends-Giele recursion. We derive the symmetries of massive tree amplitudes on the coulomb branch of N = 4 SYM theory, which in turn can be obtained from N = (1, 1) SYM theory by dimensional reduction. Furthermore, we investigate the tree amplitudes of N = (1, 1) SYM theory and explain how analytical formulae can be obtained from a numerical implementation of the supersymmetric BCFW recursion relation and investigate a potential uplift of the massless tree amplitudes of N = 4 SYM theory. Finally we study an alternative to dimensional regularization of N = 4 SYM theory. The infrared divergences are regulated by masses obtained from a Higgs mechanism. The corresponding string theory set-up suggests that the amplitudes have an exact dual conformal symmetry. We confirm this expectation and illustrate the calculational advantages of the massive regulator by explicit calculations.
