Les églises et les bâtiments à caractère religieux de Montréal : de la francisation à la patrimonialisation / Montreal churches and buildings of religious character : from francization to patrimonialization

Bernier, Lyne 13 February 2015 (has links)
Montreal, since its inception, has undoubtedly been marked by the religious presence; the resulting urban landscape thus bears a distinctive identity. Churches and buildings of religious character, and their sites—objects of this dissertation—certainly form a major part of the city’s built landscape; they generate sense and deeply rooted symbolic values. Above being paramount in structuring the territory of Montreal, they contribute in forging the identity ofthe largest Francophone city in North America. The spreading of Catholicism was based on the establishment of a parochial network, and the wealth of religious congregations’ works intensified the catholic action in neighbourhoods marked by a large Anglican and Protestant population. From then on, the proliferation of church buildings has modeled this exceptional religious topography that also exposes the mechanisms underlying the various urbanization stages of Quebec’s metropolis. Consequently, this palimpsest reveals itself through its territorial organization and thearchitecture of its churches and buildings of religious character. Modern town planning practices must take into account these fundamental issues of preservation and valorization of the built heritage. Privatizing some of these sites and adapting them to uses not really suited to their initial symbolic and heritage values may subvert the capacity to make sense of the urban landscape by obliterating a number of landmarks that formerly facilitated its understanding. This doctoral research revolves around three great periods. The first one considers the forming and expansion of Francophone Catholicity representations in Montreal’s landscape; the second period is characterized by the dissemination of new catholic representations that correspond to new identity-related issues; and the last period recounts the vagaries of the church heritagization process initiated in the seventies.

The civic center as an assertion of national success

Iosa, Ioana 01 December 2009 (has links)
This paper aims to place the monumental apology represented by the Civic Center of Bucharest in its urban and socio-political context. Therefore we have analysed the reasons and decisions that led to the way it was conceived and set up, and in addition we have tried to rebuild the narrative of the history of Bucharest through the city’s prominent built heritage. For this reason we have looked into the relations between the fact of erecting buildings and remarkable spaces and the (re)construction of a Romanian national identity, beginning with the Declaration of independence and ending with the European integration, the latter standing for the supreme legitimacy granted to the Romanian State. Therefore this research engages into the analysis of the mechanisms involved in using architectural and urban productions as instruments for defining and promoting national identity. In addition it fills a gap of almost non-existent scientific work dealing with the Civic Center, which is, due to the exceptional efforts engaged in its construction, in the same time Bucharest’s emblem and scar. Finally, it deals with the question of the reception of “ideologically charged” buildings, and more generally, with the fate of urban heritage inherited from totalitarian regimes.

A Vila Industrial e o patrimônio histórico arquitetônico de Campinas - SP : entre a conservação e a reestruturação urbana / The Industrial Village and cultural heritage of Campinas - SP : between conservation and urban restructuring

Roxo, Rafael, 1980- 24 August 2018 (has links)

Our study has analyzed how the formation of Vila Industrial region, in Campinas, was associated to the establishment of standards for the preservation of cultural heritage and to trends regarding the restructuring of the region since 1987 until 2013. Vila Industrial region has been formed behind the city's train station, near by two cemeteries and close to Lazaretos dos Morféticos, City's Slaughterhouse, and Imigração regions. Since the end of the XIX century, Vila Industrial region established itself as the place that would house the people who were working at the railroad and at the industries and tannery and also was considered an unhealthy area. The production of a segregated city and the relative isolation of the region have preserved architectural and cultural features, which have become the identity of the locals. The region is characterized by an architectural style that has become known by its reverse salient and, nowadays, both projects of architectural preservation and transformation of these shapes-contents are interested on that. Our research has shown that the construction of Joá Penteado Tunnel Road Complex, in 1987, has been associated to the production of dozens of vertical buildings and to the establishment of new local business and services in the region; and the destruction of the worker's dwelling complex, in a heritage area of the Railway Complex for the construction of the Terminal Mulitmodal, in 2007, points to the transformation of the architectural standards and, as a consequence, to changes in the locals' way of living. These changes can be considered material phenomena of the urban restructuring process that was happening in the Vila Industrial region. In the same way, the many heritage dwellings in Vila Industrial that have been established by city's heritage defense Council, for example, the old Fepasa Railway Complex, the Cantúsio Tannery and the worker's dwellings ¿ from Francisco Teodoro street, Vila Venda Grande, Vilas Manoel Dias, Vila Manoel Freire ¿ have been identified in our study about the formation of the region as the origins of its development and they represent the conflicts for the preservation of the heritage nowadays. The analysis of the combined process of preservation-restructuring in Vila Industrial has helped us to understand the conflicts that take place from the urban interventions in city's areas of historical matters. The study has presented that what contributes the most for the conservation of the heritage architectural buildings in the region has been the continuous use, because the establishment of heritages has reflected in: the disinterest of the owners (heirs), the conservation of the houses, and, for more than one decade, the houses of the heritage villages have been occupied by low income population and they are the ones who effectively conserve the heritage places. While the Vila Manoel Dias and Venda Grande buildings are conserved, the emptying of one of the region's architectural building complexes for the materialization of rehabilitation projects has led to the ruin of Vila Manoel Freire's buildings. The conflicts for the preservation of Vila Industrial's architectural history heritage lead to a reflection about the importance of keeping the population near to heritage items in a period marked by the transformation of forms, habits and ways of life in the metropolis' regions / Mestrado / Análise Ambiental e Dinâmica Territorial / Mestre em Geografia

Abstract: The Prophet Gentileza is known in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for having produced visual arts interventions of huge dimensions on the cityscape. He walked among automobiles along the city's avenues and on the ferry that crosses from Rio to Niterói, prophesizing, and so he became an urban legend from the nineteensixties to the present day. The work that Gentileza produced on viaduct pillars, walls and crossings of Rio de Janeiro was considered to be dirty scrawlings by the Rio de Janeiro urban cleaning company (Comlurb), and he was considered insane because of his religious ramblings, living outside mainstream society. When his writings were covered over with whitewash by the city cleaners, a civic movement was set in motion, demanding that his messages be restored. One of the main objectives of this project was to understand the dynamics of the movement for recognizing the cultural value of Gentileza as an outsider artist, as well as the arguments used to determine what is or is not art, when visual production occurs outside consecrated art circuits. Field research was conducted so as to study the archives Gentileza's family kept, and also to collect images of his sketches and jottings, photograph the graphic work on the viaduct pillars as well as to research products that have been designed based on the appropriation of Gentileza's unique graphic font, as well as of his discourse used as marketing and turned into slogans with tourism intent. Through visual analysis of his works and artistic language, we were able to uncover the constitution of his processes of visual manifestation/intervention on the carioca cityscape engendered in the course of his wanderings. / Mestrado / Artes / Mestre em Artes

Průmyslové dědictví a obnova měst: nové perspektivy pro čtvrť Atlampa v Mexico city / Industrial heritage and urban regeneration: New perspectives for the district of Atlampa in Mexico City

Guzmán Penella, Diego January 2021 (has links)
Industrial heritage and urban regeneration: New perspectives for the district of Atlampa in Mexico City Abstract in English The relationship between cities and industry has been the subject of research ever since the process of industrialization began in the 18th century. The interest around it has only grown once industry started leaving urban centers in the mid 20th century, forcing cities to evolve to fulfill new functions. This posed a challenge to urban planners and heritage professionals, who had to find solutions together to preserve important industrial sites without restraining the city from evolving. The present thesis explores the different approaches commonly used to address this challenge and analyzes their feasibility for the case of Atlampa, a historical industrial district in Mexico City that has stagnated for decades despite showing great urban potential and heritage value. The core of the thesis is a comparative study of former industrial districts with similar circumstances, which were identified through a diagnosis of Atlampa. The comparison analyzes the urban planning and heritage conservation approaches in each case and determines what could be a feasible and desirable strategy for the urban regeneration of Atlampa. Key words industrial heritage - urban regeneration - urban heritage -...

Centro de interpretación de los canales y valles de Lima en la Urbanización San Juan Bautista de Villa en Chorrillos / Central Valley of Lima Water Channels Community and Interpretation Center in San Juan Bautista de Villa neighborhood in the District of Chorrillos

Pequeño Delgado, Jean Pierre Steffano 27 November 2019 (has links)
The following investigation has the objective of justifying the importance of an interpretation center about the water channel network that has irrigated the central part of Lima agriculture from its Pre-Hispanic era to the current one, as well as the establishing of design criteria adopted from the study of its typology and of the Critical Regionalism emphasis. The latter is linked to its history-related proposal and to an old urban vestige yet to be revalued from neglection, completely related to the idea of transportation of water for agrarian use: The aqueduct of the Hacienda Villa (18th Century), only one on its type in Lima city. The mentioned finality joins another one of revaluing its surroundings, also neglected, which are proposed to be transformed through the presence of the Project. In the investigation, it was discovered that an interpretation centre needs to offer exhibitions about the history or nature features of a site, in relationship with palpable elements on their surroundings, while it presents programatical variety that goes beyond the classical exhibition functional package, in aim of its sustaintability, as well as a direct communication between the main access of the project with public space. On the other hand, it has been studied that critical regionalism offer the building an oportunity of linking it materially and volumetrically with its local history-based idea along with the inclusion of natural resources. This project is important because it highlights the posibilities of revaluing a piece of urban heritage through architecture. / Trabajo de investigación

Le patrimoine urbain au coeur de l’identité nationale : le cas de la Palestine / Urban heritage in the heart of national identity : the case of Palestine

Mustafa, Muhammad 18 December 2009 (has links)
This work aims to understand how Palestine affected by a space war, has launched a processcreating heritage value. It reveals the many actors involved and the strategies implemented in creating acomplex and often dramatic identity. In this framework the renovation project of the city of Al-Khalilillustrates among the Palestinians, the desire to assert identity in an a turbulent landscape shattered bywars, displacement, and dispossession by the Israeli occupation. Heritage relates to the convergence ofthree statements: identity, territory and sovereignty. Here, historical geography and development ofheritage consciousness are intimately linked and contribute to highly express the Palestinian nation.

Payette-Hamelin, Mathieu 10 1900 (has links)
For a few decades now, we are witnessing in the province of Quebec a multiplication of industrial wastelands. If those spaces represent predilection sites to urban redevelopment, their location in the core of the city encourages their reoccupation and their reconversion. However, their transformation doesn’t appear to be solely motivated by their emplacement but also by the historic interest that they arouse. In this thesis we aim to determine how we can integrate urbanistic dimensions to the elaboration of a project which intends to preserve an old urban area. This thesis has for main objective to enlighten elements of an urbanistic perspective of heritage conservation. From the study of nine projects of heritage preservation located along the Lachine canal in Montreal, we question the contribution of the actual discourse on heritage conservation to the revitalization of old urban areas. We consider more specifically the morphological dimensions and the vocational activities of those projects. Our research is based on the following hypothesis: that the integration of heritage conservation issues to the transformation of the city results from the diversity and the complementarity of the vocational activities and from the different uses of the urban spaces. The study of those projects is conducted in order to identify how they take place in an urban project’s perspective. Constituted as a reaction to decontextualized urban planning practices, the notion of urban project is based on works related to the concept of urban heritage, specifically those of Gustavo Giovannoni and the Italian school of typomorphology. Because the projects that we have studied insist on a sectorial approach of the transformation of the old industrial corridor, and only on its integration to a regional scale of the organization of the territory, we can’t consider that they take place in an urban project’s perspective. We show how they differ from such an approach and how the discourse on heritage conservation developed in those projects forbids the integration of the Lachine canal corridor into local urban dynamics.

Nadeau, Noémie 07 1900 (has links)
When a site or a good is protected whit a conservation status, either national or local, the municipal regulations are one of the main tools to manage the built environment modifications. How do the regulation participate in values conservation? To explore this question, we chose to study the case of the arrondissement historique et naturel du Mont-Royal (AHNMR), a major site in the Montreal identity. We listed the heritage values recognized to the site and analyzed the project management process in the four boroughs who share the Montreal part of the AHNMR territory; we analyzed a few permit requests as well. The process is complex, the evaluation being mostly discretionary, including functionary analysis and advisory comities as well as public consultation exercises. The research highlights that urban regulation tend to concentrate on values know for their materiality (architectural values, landscape values for instance) and to neglect immaterial values (custom values, identity and iconic values). The values juxtaposition can mitigate this disproportion by protecting an immaterial value through a material value. The documentation on heritage values and their embodiment in the arrangement of a site has a major importance for the application of the evaluation criteria. The discretionary evaluation brings multiple views on a project, actor’s opinions, heritage experts or non-experts, generally not participating in project’s evaluation process, which contributes to their evolution. Public consultations give rise to reevaluating heritage values as well as knowledge deepening.
