Building as Witness

Mosso, Santiago 21 September 2006 (has links)
A fire station is a building where not too many things happen. But the few that do are either too forgettable or too memorable. This thesis tries to achieve time, innovation and realism. There's a redundancy in this building, in people's actions that makes it memorable. This building is the evidence of my way of thinking architecture. It reflects my memory as student and architect. It shows an undeniable background. It's questioning why buildings don't endure in time, why they are disposable objects. I'm trying to find reasons to make a building respectful, socially involved with its surroundings. The project is a midsize fire station. It answers to an actual necessity to relocate the existing fire station on Prince St. (Alexandria, VA) giving more space for firefighters and better access for two trucks. The new site is an existing parking lot that crosses a whole block from South Washington St. to South Columbus St. between Wilkes St. and Wolfe St. This site gave me the possibility to create a building where trucks can access and leave it without turning or maneuvering too much. / Master of Architecture

Trujillo Valverde, Said Ilich 19 April 2023 (has links)

Giner Tormo, María Consuelo 07 June 2003 (has links)
- / The aim of this thesis is to study the twenty-two symphonic works of the composer Manuel Berná, (born Albatera, Alicante, Spain, 22/08/1915).It emphasises the importance of his style within the framework of altered tonal harmony, which avoids doubling the octave, rather using altered sixths and sevenths. It assimilates Impressionism with its command of the orchestral colours; Pointillism, in which every note has equal importance, producing fragmentation in the melodies; and Symbolism, with its search for the representation of the essence of the objects or the psychology of the characters. These techniques and his contemporary mentality raise Popular Music to the category of Symphonic Music. Key takes precedence over mode within polytonality and even pantonality, contributing the aesthetic idea of influence of the semitone. As a classical composer, he was up to date with new trends, a living example of tenacity, evolving and contributing his aesthetics to new generations.

A comparison of multiple techniques for the reconstruction of entry, descent, and landing trajectories and atmospheres

Wells, Grant 05 April 2011 (has links)
The primary importance of trajectory reconstruction is to assess the accuracy of pre-flight predictions of the entry trajectory. While numerous entry systems have flown, often these systems are not adequately instrumented or the flight team not adequately funded to perform the statistical engineering reconstruction required to quantify performance and feed-forward lessons learned into future missions. As such, entry system performance and reliability levels remain unsubstantiated and improvement in aerothermodynamic and flight dynamics modeling remains data poor. The comparison is done in an effort to quantitatively and qualitatively compare Kalman filtering methods of reconstructing trajectories and atmospheric conditions from entry systems flight data. The first Kalman filter used is the extended Kalman filter. Extended Kalman filtering has been used extensively in trajectory reconstruction both for orbiting spacecraft and for planetary probes. The second Kalman filter is the unscented Kalman filter. Additionally, a technique for using collocation to reconstruct trajectories is formulated, and collocation's usefulness for trajectory simulation is demonstrated for entry, descent, and landing trajectories using a method developed here to deterministically find the state variables of the trajectory without nonlinear programming. Such an approach could allow one to utilize the same collocation trajectory design tools for the subsequent reconstruction.

Hledání S-boxů pomocí evolučních algoritmů / Design of S-Boxes Using Genetic Algorithms

Hovorka, Bedřich January 2010 (has links)
This work deals with part of the encryption algorithm, called S-box and its development. For its development is used evolutionary computing, such as classical genetic algorithm, Estimation of Distribution Algorithm, Cartesian genetic programming and multi-criteria VEGA and SPEA algorithms. This thesis aims to test the properties of substitution boxes to its evolutionary development. Firstly, the work deals with cryptography and issues of s-boxes. There are explained basic concepts and describes the selected criteria of safety. Next chapter explains evolutionary algorithms   and multi-criteria optimization. This knowledge is used to design and program implementation, which are described below. Finally discusses the application of the criteria studied. Discussed here is searching S-boxes in both single-criteria, and especially in multi-criteria genetic search.

Territorio, paisaje e identidad.

Garcia-Mayor, Clara 31 March 2015 (has links)

Lopez Villegas, Jesus Alejandro 01 June 2015 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis explores the relationship between the plurality of polyphonic and independent voices and consciousnesses, a Mikhail Bakhtin's concept, in two plays by Lope de Vega. El maestro de Danzar y El bobo del colegio are two of his least known and studied. Both plays present protagonists, simple citizens, which pretend to court two noble ladies. Under these circumstances, they are forced to avoid social rejection, issue guaranteed by their humble lineage. In order to complete their undertaking, they disguise as a dance teacher and a university fool. This process shields them from, the above mentioned, traditional disapproval they are subject to. It also entitles them to become, symbolically and virtually, the main dialogic executors in the play. Bakhtin depicts the process of embracing an alternate identity, different from their own, as a vital part of carnival. It compels the leading characters, El maestro and El bobo being no exception, to undergo two changes. First, they become a new individual, recognizable only to those who are aware of their masks. Second, their voices attract attention to the point of influencing the preeminent nobles of the comedy to follow their lead. Further, their ideas come to matter more than those of any other voice in the comedy. In the beginning they follow an ideal, and are subdued by social hierarchy. At the conclusion, they finish leading and controlling the polyphonic relationship between the independent voices and consciousnesses of the other characters in the play. And rather than a conflict, both comedies depict a harmonic social interaction of all their characters. Although scholarship exists analyzing individual plays, a comprehensive study of the effective association between language and disguise favoring a villano over high-class citizens has never been undertaken. This is Lope's strategy to plainly contrast the traditional social differentiation of classes.

Resurrecting Lope's Autos

King, Errol LeRoy 09 November 2006 (has links) (PDF)
By the turn of the seventeenth century, the auto sacramental quickly became the most elaborate dramatic genre in Spain. Shortly after the Council of Trent, professional playwrights replaced clerics who had previously written autos for the Corpus Christi celebrations held each year, but none were more influential than Lope de Vega in refining thematic, literary, and staging elements and techniques. At the middle of the nineteenth century, critics began to study the genre that a royal decree had banned almost a century earlier; however, few have dedicated much time to Lope's autos. As a result, most critics have misunderstood Lope's contributions to the genre. This study addresses some of the issues that scholars have particularly misunderstood or ignored, namely, Lope's treatment of the Eucharistic theme in his autos, the level of dramatic unity displayed in his Corpus Christi plays, and the contribution of spectacle to the overall performance. Using a textual analysis of three of Lope's autos, I conclude that Lope could and did write profound, unified liturgical plays designed to disseminate Catholic dogma in an effective and entertaining manner. Each of the three autos used in this study, Las aventuras del Hombre, El viaje del Alma, and Los dos ingenios y esclavos, presents a protagonist representing mankind, who must learn to disregard evil influences faced in mortality and turn to Christ and the Eucharist for salvation. These elaborate liturgical performances, whose budgets exceeded those of the popular comedias of the day, all took place in city plazas around the country. In order to understand the deserved popularity that Lope's autos clearly enjoyed in their original setting, scholars need to return to the texts themselves and not merely rely on criticism.
