Médiation de l'architecture par l'exposition et sa réception par des visiteurs experts et non experts / Mediating architecture through the exhibition media : the reception of architectural exhibits by expert and non-expert visitors

Laberge, Marie Elizabeth 11 October 2012 (has links)
This thesis focusses on the mediation of architecture in the museum setting and on the different tools used to communicate the architectural project in the exhibition. The main goal of this research is to get a better knowledge and understanding of the reception of the different objects used to exhibit the many aspects of architectural projects by visitors (architects and non-architects). There is a general agreement on the fact that it is difficult to communicate architecture through the exhibition media. Many objects are typically used to exhibit the architectural project : drawings, models, photographs, videos and so forth. Some of these tools can be hard to understand, especially for a layperson, since they are coded objects. In order to better communicate the architectural project, curators often choose to depict it by presenting a series of objects, each tool conveying a different aspect of the building. This serial type of presentation can make the task even harder for some visitors. Since understanding an architectural project can be quite difficult for visitors, it appears important to investigate the meaning making of visitors of varying profiles. Six main questions were investigated in this thesis : (1) Which exhibition objects attracted the visitor’s attention? (2) What type of mental operations did the visitor do in relation to these objects? (3) Which obstacles did the visitor face, and what did he do when faced with such obstacles? (4) Which aspects of the architectural project (materiality, concept, context, etc.) attracted the visitor’s attention? (5) How did the visitor link the different objects presented in a serial manner? (6) Did the visitor’s professionnal profile (architect or non-architect) influence his meaning making? Data were collected among thirty visitors at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal during the exhibition « Some Ideas on Living in London and Tokyo by Stephen Taylor and Ryue Nishizawa ». Each participant was asked to express, as freely as possible, what he thought, saw, felt and imagined during the course of his visit, as is prescribed by the thinking aloud method (also known as protocol analysis). The participant is accompanied by the researcher throughout his visit. Visitor’s verbalisations are recorded, then typed and encoded for analysis. Many of the results obtained in this research confirm ideas that were presented in previous texts by scholars : the popularity of photographs ; the little interest for plans by non-architects ; the various aspects of the architectural project mentionned in relation to the objects exhibited ; the links established between objects as a means to identify the serial presentation. Other results, though, challenge some ideas frequently presented by authors, but never validated by empirical data. For instance, many curators consider a model to be a very popular and easily understood tool used to communicate architecture. In the present research, the model is not used very much by visitors. Therefore, the type of model and the way to exhibit it might make this tool more or less useful for meaning making by visitors. Many authors believe that non architects encounter difficulties and obstacles during their visit. The results obtained in this thesis show that, as expected, non architects do face obstacles, but they also reveal that architects themselves face many obstacles and challenges in their meaning making while visiting the architecture exhibition

What processes will support effective shared decision making when health visitors and parent are planning to improve the wellbeing of babies and children within the context of the Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) policy framework?

Astbury, Ruth A. January 2014 (has links)
Two key policy documents are having an impact on health visiting practice in Scotland: Getting It Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) (2013), which seeks to promote all children’s wellbeing, and The Healthcare Quality Strategy for NHS Scotland (2010) which promotes person-centred care. ‘Shared decision making’ is integral to ‘person-centred care’; however no research studies to date have linked shared decision making with health visitor practice. This thesis reports on a descriptive, qualitative research study, which was conducted in two health board areas in Scotland, in order to explore the processes that support effective shared decision making in health visiting practice within the context of implementing GIRFEC. The design was in three phases and used Elwyn’s Framework, of ‘Choice, Options and Decision Talk’ as a structure (2012). Phase 1 consisted of audio recordings of 2 x health visitor: parent encounters when decisions were being made; Phase 2 consisted of semi-structured interviews with 9 x health visitors and 9 x parents who had made decisions within the last 6 months; Phase 3 involved 3 x focus groups reviewing the findings to date and reflecting on current issues when implementing GIRFEC. The framework method was used for analysis and two additional themes were identified: ‘Issues’ and ‘Relationships’. The health visitors demonstrated that they built up trusting relationships with parents; however there was lack of understanding and application of decision making theory which supports analysis, and an outcome focused approach to person-centred planning. This thesis identifies areas for health visitor practice development.

Analyzed how the old Seraphic Seminary revitalization process that was active between the 1910s to 1970, transformed the place into an important integral protection conservation unit. It is now considered the main municipal park visitation and also disseminating awareness of preservation and conservation of native species, and a proposal for inter-relations between society and the environment as well as ecotourism. It also proposed public use strategies taking into account its principles of creation, trying to analyze the tourist nature of the protected area based on theoretical frameworks and perception of visitors by relating their habits and attitudes in PEMSLT. Also tried to verify how environmental education is carried out in the protected area, as an instructional tool to boost the participation of urban and tourism collective within the park. The methodology used was interviews to visitors from April to September 2014, with the development of direct and indirect questions, applied to visitors during their tour and visitation, and also behavioral analysis of visitors during their activities in the park. Most visitors realize that the most significant theme of PEMSLT's environmental focus, with emphasis on animal and plant species present. Highlight the preservation of the area in harmony with the architectural beauty of these buildings. However, visitors identify management needs in the direction of improvement of signs, constant presence of monitors trails enrichment of visitation and environmental awareness, greater coordination between the different spheres of the management team, improved fast-food infrastructure, responsibility and suggestions for the visitation trails.

Cosmogonia profana: uma leitura de O visitante, de Osman Lins / Profane cosmogony: a reading of The visitor by Osman Lins

No. of bitstreams: 1 Antonio Coutinho Soares Filho.pdf: 789799 bytes, checksum: 7d4dabc562cc362d9d4fb980060b0b6c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-05-29 / Universidade Estadual do Maranhão - UEMA / In the whole of Brazilian literature, Osman Lins is a name that stands out for the quality and diversity of his production. Novelist, playwright, essayist, among other attributions, the writer has an aesthetic refinement as well as a reflexive posture in face of the cultural, social and political obstacles of the country. The osmanianos studies often highlight the author's romanesque experiments in his so-called maturity phase. Not exclusively, the prior creation to this period still lacks major critical exams, such as the novel debut, The Visitor (1955) corpus of this research. Besides the interesting textual warp, this work presents a humble fortune review, which gives rise to this work. It should be added that on several occasions the writer affirms that the cosmogonical attitude along with the preoccupations with the national ills and the reflection on the creative process, guide his life and the literary work. That said, one wonders how this worldview is presented in The Visitor. Taking into account the traced interdiscurssive of the narrative and the novelist’s social-critcism and point of view. The proposed analysis considers the mythological, biblical, and liturgical inscriptions as well as the development of his story in the plot. In the face of it, there’s a hypothesis is that Lins, in a subversive modulation brings to the scene elements of the Eden myth and Christian liturgy but he also highlights the contradictions of a society that privileges appearances, victimizing the woman mainly. In the theoretical-critical articulation a review of the analytical itinerary of the corpus is done, with the help of Nitrini (1987, 2001, 2003, 2004), Andrade (2001, 2004, 2014) and Ribeiro (2016), among others. The concepts of threshold — Benjamin (1987), Gagnebin (2010); Devices and profanation, according to Agamben (2009, 2010, respectively), also guide this research. The theoretical-critical complete this framework itself, brings reflections on the poetic–myth creation according to the thinking of Mielietinski (1987), Eliade (2010), Perrone-Moisés (1998), Benjamin (2013), Derrida (2005) and Bastazin (2006). The methodological course, starting from the narrative structure and the critical fortune of the work, examines the aesthetic inversions operationalized by osmanian writing. The visitor, Osman Lins' first creative gesture despite his myth-poetic features presents through an introspective plot a sharp vision of the manipulation game that sustains the society, a principle that distorts the essence of the being and search to conceal the contradictory nature of power / No conjunto da literatura brasileira, Osman Lins é um nome que se destaca pela qualidade e pela diversidade de sua produção.

Wine tourism experiences in New Zealand: an exploratory study

Alonso, Abel Duarte January 2005 (has links)
Recently, New Zealand's wine industry has made remarkable progress. For example, the number of hectares planted in grapes increased from 4,880 in 1990, to 15,479 in 2003, and the number of wineries increased from 175 in 1993 to 421 in 2003. Projections for 2006 indicate that the growth of wine exports should nearly double from 2003, with expected revenues of $NZ 736 million. However, despite this growth, little has been reported about developments in New Zealand's wine tourism industry, or about consumer perceptions of the winery experience in the form of published academic research. The limited amount of information, particularly from the visitors' points of view, may not only be preventing winery operators and the wine industry in general from having a better understanding of their visitors, but also from addressing the needs of different visitor segments. Resulting implications for winery operators may include forgone business opportunities, and customers not fully benefiting in terms of product and service quality. Recent studies indicate that this last element is particularly important in wine tourism. This study reports the results of an exploratory research project conducted in New Zealand wineries that investigated aspects of the winery experience, including wine involvement, satisfaction with the winery experience, and visitor demographics. An index to measure involvement with wine, the wine involvement index (WIX), was developed and utilised to investigate whether wine involvement had an impact on winery visitors' behaviour. Data were collected from winery visitors via questionnaires distributed in a sample of wineries in different wine regions of New Zealand. A total of 609 usable responses were obtained (24.8% response rate). The results indicate a number of differences between the independent, dependent, and moderating variables. For example, it was found that age, whether visitors are domestic or international, and different levels of wine involvement appear to have a clear impact on winery expenditure. In addition, the WIX was confirmed to be a useful tool, for example, by identifying potential relationships between different groups of winery visitors. The results add new knowledge to the area of wine tourism, and offer useful information for wineries and the wine tourism industry. This information includes the potential commercial significance of some visitor groups. An additional contribution of this study is the 'complete wine tourism research model.' This concept presents an alternative to existing wine tourism models, and points out attributes and dimensions that play a major role in the winery experience.

Borgström, Ulrika, Svalqvist, Louise January 2009 (has links)

The purpose of this essay is to look at how museums design their activities as tourist destinations through the dissemination of history. In order to research this problem we have posed the following questions: How do museums act in order to animate and interpret history? What does the future hold for the museums? In order to find the answers to these questions we have made a deep-going analysis of the activities of four museums, Nordiska Museet, Etnografiska Museet, Historiska Museet and Naturhistoriska Museet. These museums have been analyzed by means of interviews, observations and the study of documents. Our theoretical perspective is informed by a hermeneutic perspective as well as Foucault´s definition of museums as institutions, and the concept of storytelling. Our conclusions are as follows: Museums have progressed from an Enlightenment ideal to a more post-modern approach, which means that they want to activate the visitors and make them reflect and form their own opinion by presenting different versions of the past that will stimulate imagination. Our belief is that this trend will continue and the museums will become even more oriented towards creative tourism at the same time as they will protect their position as vehicles and creators of knowledge and guardians of the Swedish cultural heritage. Unfortunately a growing centralization of the field is working in the direction of limiting the range of offers and restricting the museums´ potential to offer different versions of the past.
/

Servitja Tormo, Lada 28 November 2012 (has links)
The present research try to analyze the objectively patterns of visitor behavior focused on 5 and 12 years old kids, which visited the museums of the city of Girona in a non organized tour. We combined different methodologies for the data collection: survey, non participant direct observation and symbolic language from offered and self-administered written response. As a result, we know how children interact with museum materials, how they make relations with the different group members, how they use supplementary materials to do the visit, what itinerary they do, how they visit the rooms, what kind of texts they read, in which Units of Attention they provide more interest, what colors attract the most, what effects in their behavior can have the lighting, the noise and the temperature, what are their preferences, and in general, which are the profiles of families who visit the museums of Girona.

The critical success factors for managing the visitor experience at a major musical event / Bianca Manners

Manners, Bianca January 2011 (has links)
With numerous artists coming to South Africa, the event industry is becoming congested with competition. This makes the production of a memorable visitor experience to events particularly challenging for the management of the event. Various aspects are required to occur when managing an event, and these contribute to the success and memorable experience of visitors. These aspects can either be controlled or uncontrolled by management. To ensure a successful event and memorable experience for visitors, event managers have to consider all of the various aspects that can be controlled within the event organisation when hosting a major music event. It is therefore important for management to ensure that the controllable key management aspects, also referred to as Critical Success Factors (CSFs), are implemented effectively and efficiently to ensure a memorable visitor experience. However, even though these management aspects (CSFs) may be familiar to event managers, the significance of what visitors regard as important concerning those aspects that would ensure a memorable visitor experience is, as yet, undefined. In addition, according to available literature, CSFs differ between the different events and different tourism organisations. Thus, CSFs identified at one event to ensure the successful management of a memorable visitor experience cannot be used at other events. Hosting major music events at various locations can be even more challenging as visitors attending major music events at different locations are a non-homogeneous market and so regard different aspects in different lights. Therefore, it is evident that the CSFs identified with regard to what visitors at one venue will consider as important will differ from those regarded as important at another venue, even when it is the same performer at each venue. Thus, it became critical to seek answers to the questions of what visitors to a major music event regarded as important CSFs and how did the importance of these CSFs differ between location and location? Therefore, the purpose of this study became the determination of the CSFs for managing the visitor experience at major music events in South Africa. The year 2011 was the first time that world-famous Neil Diamond had performed in South Africa. Neil Diamond performed four concerts at different locations (Johannesburg’s FNB stadium, Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium, Cape Town’s Greenpoint Stadium and at Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Stadium). This was the first time major music events had been held at these venues where one performing artist performed at all four different locations (cities). Thus, this event was the ideal opportunity to investigate. In order to realise the goal of the research, surveys were conducted at the four Neil Diamond concerts held, respectively, in Johannesburg (1 April, 2011), Durban (5 April, 2011), Port Elizabeth (8 April, 2011) and Cape Town (11 April, 2011) where, altogether, 1820 questionnaires were administered. The purpose of the first article was to determine what visitors at a major musical event regarded as critical management aspects, or as critical success factors (CSFs), for a memorable and satisfactory visitor experience. This was to aid major music event managers with information they could use to improve and ensure memorable visitor experiences in the future. A factor analysis was performed to determine the CSFs. Six factors were revealed, being General Management; Souvenirs; Marketing; Venue and Technical aspects; Accessibility and Parking; and Amenities and Catering. General Management, Venue and Technical aspects and Marketing were regarded as the most important CSFs for visitors to a major music event. It was subsequently confirmed that CSFs differed from one event to another. Thus it became clear that one set of CSFs cannot be used across each venue for events. By determining the CSFs, and through successfully managing these factors, major music events will ensure the retention of long term visitor goodwill, and so will remain competitive and sustainable. Neil Diamond presented four concerts at four different locations, The purpose of the second article was to determine the impact that location makes to the visitor experience at a major music event. Two-way frequency tables and Chi-square tests as well as ANOVAS and Turkey’s multiple comparisons were used to determine the differences between the four locations. Statistically significant differences were found, based on demographic, behavioural variables and motivational factors. Determining the effects these differences have provided major music event managers with superior knowledge in order to develop and manage future concerts at the differing destinations and locations. This research also help management to create a memorable visitor experience and so foster the promotion of future events more effectively to the target audiences, as well as potential sponsors. This specificity can also enhance bid documents for organisations and locations aiming at hosting major music events. This research revealed six critical success factors at a major music event. These CSFs can be used to enhance the visitor experience. However, it was also found that one set of CSFs cannot be used for every event as different locations regard different CSFs as being more important than others. Since major music events are often held at more than one location, it becomes critical to differentiate each location as the visitors to the various locations cannot be seen as homogeneous and so will have different needs and expectations. Thorough and informed knowledge of what is required for visitor satisfaction will not only ensure an improved event, but will enhance the visitor experience at such an event. This was the first time research was performed at major music events in South Africa that revealed the profile, motives, CSFs and spending behaviour of visitors to these events. Research not only provided information concerning the CSFs needed to manage the visitor experience at a major music event, but also provided an overall perspective of what visitors regard as important for a memorable visitor experience at four different geographic destinations hosting the same artist. This research contributes to the literature concerning the management of major music events and concerning the creation of memorable visitor experiences at these events. / Thesis (MA (Tourism Management))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012

An Investigation of visitor behaviour in recreation and tourism settings: a case study of natural hazard management at the Glaciers, Westland National Park, New Zealand.

Hayes, D.G. January 2008 (has links)
Visitor non-compliance with protective recommendations is a major problem faced by recreational managers within natural environments. Although many studies have been conducted on noncompliant visitor behaviour within natural resource areas, few attempts have been made to gain an understanding of the behaviour, or to understand the decision making process. This dissertation seeks to address this gap by exploring salient motivations behind noncompliant behaviour within a natural recreation setting. The study was conducted over the summer of 2007-2008 within the popular tourist attractions of Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, Westland National park, New Zealand. The Department of Conservation has a legal and increasingly a moral obligation to provide a level of service and ensure a high standard of visitor safety within lands it administers. However, despite its efforts, management actions are criticised as being ‘over cautious’, and consequently a large number of visitors choose to ignore hazard warnings communicated by management and cross safety barriers, placing themselves and others at considerable risk. Previous studies at the glaciers have identified a number of causes for visitor non-compliance, including situational factors and the adequacy of current visitor management procedures. Through a quantitative measure, and qualitative interview responses, study findings show that visitor compliance with protective recommendations was strongly influenced by a number of situational factors including the proximity of track end points from the glacier terminus; the visibility of other visitors beyond the roped barriers; modest hazard perceptions of visitors; estimated visitor age; time of day and weather conditions. Based on visitor interview responses, motives of non-compliance were further explored by classifying behaviour according to Gramann and Vander Stoep’s (1987) typologies of normative violations. It is identified, using Ajzen’s (1985; 1991) theory of planned behaviour, that non-compliance with protective recommendations at the glaciers is motivated by, (1) a ‘belief’ that the situation or resource encouraged it; (2), through a release of ‘social pressure’, because everyone else was going over; and (3), a ‘perceived facilitation of the behaviour’, in that there were no obvious consequences to self or others. Implications for management to control noncompliant behaviour are discussed in detail.

Given the involvement of science in our daily life, science communication plays a crucial role in the conquest of citizenship, being also an important tool in the process of free-choice learning. Museums and scien ce centers have been a traditional media for public understanding of science. In order to strengthen its activities in this area, these institutions are increasingly turni ng to the new Information and Communication Technologies. They have been also evaluati ng the impact of thei r virtual presence To draw a profile of the public of the Invivo - Museum of the Life’s virtual museum - an exploratory research was developed, using three met hods of investigation: log analysis, page-tagging and on-line survey. A historical survey of the visitation recorded an increase of 340% in the number of unique visitors and 295% in the number of page views, bet ween 2005 and 2008. These data demonstrate the expressive growth of the site, when compared with the official statistics, which shows that, between 2005 and 2007, ther e were an increase of 28% of Brazilians who had accessed the Internet at least once and 41% of those who were frequent Internet users. The analysis demonstrates that visitation gr ows at the beginning of classes and falls during the school holidays. It also show s busy working days and quiet weekends. Both patterns were found in other studies on museums. Peak visitation occurs in the afternoon hours, which suggests a concentrat ion of students from junior high (from 11/12 years)and high schools. The importance of students and people involved in educational process in the visitation of Invivo is also proven by the high rate of page views of content more related to national curriculum standards. Answered spontaneously by 209 visitors, the online survey collected data on demographics, motivations. It also provided an evaluation of the site. The virtual visitors are mainly women (77.9%), most ly adult and college educat ed. Their favorite cultural activities were reading (79,9%) and Internet navigation (7 7%). This points to a culturally privileged group with different habits and profile of the Brazilian population. The site was approved by 91% of the respondents. The language and educational content were items that rece ived positive evaluation. Pa rticipants are interested in more educational material, experiences , games, health prevention, cutting-edge S&T, environment, natural phenomena and contro versies and risks of science. Users suggested, also, greater interactivity, with the encouragement of dialogue and the promotion of debate, and more resources, such as bigger images, graphics and video
