Corpo;reality

Hansen, Adam January 2022 (has links)
This project uses digital technology to interpret the human body as a malleable material for the development of sculptural and textile-based design. Mikhail Bakhtin’s definition of the grotesque human body lays the conceptual groundwork for using the human body as an interactive tool, that co-shapes itself with digital technology as an extension. The technology has been given agency to affect the creative outcome, rather than treating it as a means to an end. By 3D scanning the designer’s own body, and manipulating photographic documentation of it, through algorithmic interpretations, the morpho- logical transformations of the designer’s body, in multiple realities, were investigated while reflecting on its influence on self-perception. The investigated methods resulted in alternative bodily structures carved in polystyrene, and dressed in hybrid materials of transfer-printed textiles and bio-plastic. The design outcomes suggests a design method wherein agency is given to digital technology which allows for exploring unexpected ways of perceiving the human body.

Rollback-able Random Number Generators For The Synchronous Parallel Environment For Emulation And Discrete-event Simulation (spe

Narayanan, Ramaswamy Karthik 01 January 2005 (has links)
Random Numbers form the heart and soul of a discrete-event simulation system. There are few situations where the actions of the entities in the process being simulated can be completely predicted in advance. The real world processes are more probabilistic than deterministic. Hence, such chances are represented in the system by using various statistical models, like random number generators. These random number generators can be used to represent a various number of factors, such as length of the queue. However, simulations have grown in size and are sometimes required to run on multiple machines, which share the various methods or events in the simulation among themselves. These Machines can be distributed across a LAN or even the internet. In such cases, to keep the validity of the simulation model, we need rollback-able random number generators. This thesis is an effort to develop such rollback able random number generators for the Synchronous Parallel Environment for Emulation and Discrete-Event Simulation (SPEEDES) environment developed by NASA. These rollback-able random number generators will also add several statistical distribution models to the already rich SPEEDES library.

Ungas psykiska hälsa i form av hanterbarhet : En kvantitativ studie utifrån ett genusperspektiv / Mental Health and sense of being able to handle situations among young people : A quantative study from a gender perspective

Schölin, Elin January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this quantitative study was to from a gender perspective understand and measure the mental health among young people as a sense of managing to handle situations and also how satisfied young people are with their personal qualities. The study also aims to see if there is a connection between these two ways of explaining mental health. This study takes its standpoint from a gender theory and gender stereotypes. The study was conducted as a survey with 100 young girls and boys, all of whom was students of a Swedish upper secondary school. The result of the study show that young people in general has a good sense of being able to handle situations. There was as expected a difference between young girls and boys to be found, girls had in general a lower sense of managing to handle situations. Regarding the sense of being satisfied with the personal qualities, the girls and boys in this study show a general picture of being quite satisfied with their personal qualities. It has also shown that many of the results of this study is depending of gender and the beliefs and structures there is in society about how to be a “good” man or woman.

Exploiting Non-Sequence Data in Dynamic Model Learning

Huang, Tzu-Kuo 01 October 2013 (has links)
Virtually all methods of learning dynamic models from data start from the same basic assumption: that the learning algorithm will be provided with a single or multiple sequences of data generated from the dynamic model. However, in quite a few modern time series modeling tasks, the collection of reliable time series data turns out to be a major challenge, due to either slow progression of the dynamic process of interest, or inaccessibility of repetitive measurements of the same dynamic process over time. In most of those situations, however, we observe that it is easier to collect a large amount of non-sequence samples, or random snapshots of the dynamic process of interest without time information. This thesis aims to exploit such non-sequence data in learning a few widely used dynamic models, including fully observable, linear and nonlinear models as well as Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). For fully observable models, we point out several issues on model identifiability when learning from non-sequence data, and develop EM-type learning algorithms based on maximizing approximate likelihood. We also consider the setting where a small amount of sequence data are available in addition to non-sequence data, and propose a novel penalized least square approach that uses non-sequence data to regularize the model. For HMMs, we draw inspiration from recent advances in spectral learning of latent variable models and propose spectral algorithms that provably recover the model parameters, under reasonable assumptions on the generative process of non-sequence data and the true model. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first formal guarantee on learning dynamic models from non-sequence data. We also consider the case where little sequence data are available, and propose learning algorithms that, as in the fully observable case, use non-sequence data to provide regularization, but does so in combination with spectral methods. Experiments on synthetic data and several real data sets, including gene expression and cell image time series, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods. In the last part of the thesis we return to the usual setting of learning from sequence data, and consider learning bi-clustered vector auto-regressive models, whose transition matrix is both sparse, revealing significant interactions among variables, and bi-clustered, identifying groups of variables that have similar interactions with other variables. Such structures may aid other learning tasks in the same domain that have abundant non-sequence data by providing better regularization in our proposed non-sequence methods.

La défense européenne : de l'implosion de l'URSS à la crise ukainienne / The European defence : from the implosion of the USSR to the Ukrainian crisis

Bou, Phan Dary 28 September 2015 (has links)
Since the fall of the Berlin's Wall in 1989, the European Union asserts its leading role in the world through its tremendous economy. But its common foreign policy does not have the size of its economy. lts security is ensured by NATO and the contradictory objectives are embodied in the common foreign policy. The European construction will be complete only when it will have its integrated army under a single banner. The successive crises gather the European lawmakers who decide to create trans-European armed forces with a clear mandate and with the consent of NATO to avoid the dispersal of euro-Atlantic strategic resources in order to participate in the missions of UN in the world's security. The efforts to build up the EU's strength promote the large military and civil economic increases of industrial dual innovations. And the European coercive policy bases on these behalf.

Intuitivity in HCI : A critical discourse analysis / Intuitivitet i MDI : En kritisk diskuesanalys

Wennberg, Alex January 2017 (has links)
This article presents a study that has explored the concept of intuitivity in HCI research. A literature study was carried out on 76 articles published at the CHI conference between years 2004 and 2017, all discussing or claiming to design for intuitivity in some capacity. The articles have been approached through the lens of discourse analysis, and an inductive reading has been carried out to identify different perspectives on intuitvity, and themes related to intuitivity that appear in the articles. Ten different perspectives on intuitvity have been found within these articles, providing different views on what intuitivity is, and how to design for it. As they mostly, with a few exceptions, argue that intuitivity is a desirable quality despite these large differences in perspectives it is argued that the term has an exclusionary quality, making that which it does not consider invisible. Implications of this are discussed, with a focus on the fact that all articles assume and design for able-bodied users.

Feitosa, Cirdêmia Costa 15 September 2015 (has links)
The usual models in repair able systems are minimal, perfect and imperfect repair, and, in the literature, the minimum repair model is the most explored. In repair able systems it is common that the same type of components are studied and in these cases is relevant to verify the heterogeneity between them. According to Vaupel et al. (1979), the standard methods for analysis of repair able systems data ignore the heterogeneity not observed and in some cases this should be considered. Such variability can be estimated from frailty models, characterized by using a random effect. It is proposed that the minimum repair model with frailty in order to estimate the heterogeneity not observed between systems. For this model it was conducted a simulation study in order to analyze the frequentist properties of the estimation process. The application of a real data set showed the applicability of the proposed model, in which the estimation of the parameters were determined from maximum likelihood and Bayesian approaches.

As mulheres trabalhadoras rurais que guardam a história, que a contam a / This research approaches the history of the social mobilization of the agricultoras women in the region the Northwest of the Rio Grande do Sul, through the Movement of Agricultural Diligent Women, historiando the circumstances where it appeared and if it transformed, examining the influences received from the speech of the Church Catholic and the Agricultural Syndical Movement. When examining these relations with other social groups and institutions, we go to evidence the contradictions that the Movement faces, searching to understand as the imaginary one and the social representations act on the life of the agricultoras women. Through the methodology of Verbal History, it was possible to analyze the functions and social papers of the agricultoras women, the processes of partner-cultural reproduction and transformation for which are passing, taking us to affirm it that the identities human beings are constructed to the long one of the life, for the meanings that the social groups feed in its cultural contexts

The understanding of such concept leads to the investigation of man s ability to judge (decide) on the basis of ethical values and trustful behaviour as well. The Thesis main purpose is the identification of the three levels of elements that contribute to bring the sense of justice s goodness forward. Therefore, it s necessary to observe the justice making process, ie, the judge as a man able to recognizes his act as one among the possibles good-will acts. Further, the ethic component to be considered and pursued through a sense of life s virtue among individuals categorizeds in and of fair institutions posted as turning points to identify who is the righteous man no matter the level of eveness and uniqueness of one who decides. This quest is justified by logical and dialogical processes focused in the awareness of how a decision act (judgement act) can be recognized as a fair or unfair. Paul Ricoeur philosophy especially his latest years issues reflects his concern in the urgency to unveil the mechanism of judicial decision making, whose consequences go far beyond someone ordinary life. Paul Ricoeur thought emerges the discussion of an ultimate men s justice as a result of a complex (social, economic, political, cultural etc) system, which core is haunted by the inherent human weakness and vicious narroness to capture the essence of God s justice creation / Esta tese fala de uma hermenêutica do homem justo a partir de uma teoria da justiça presente na filosofia de Paul Ricoeur.

Reis, Fredrik January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis has been to try and define future plans among merchant marine seamen students. Regarding work as able bodied seaman, oiler or to study to deck or engine officer. And also see the interest to apply for marine job positions outside Sweden for example in Norway. The thesis is based on a quantitative method where the result is based on an inquiry from four schools and answers from 114 students. The interest to continue working as able bodied seamen was higher than to continue working as oiler. The majority of the students planed deck or engine officer studies. Only a few of the students planed only to continue as able bodied seamen or oiler. Almost 80 % of the students answered they were interested to apply for marine job positions abroad. Many students planed further studies and the question is how the shipping business should secure the growth of Swedish merchant marine seamen?</p>
