Eriksson, Josephine, Windscheffel, Sofia January 2009 (has links)

Justifying Preferential Treatment - Preferential Policies in Theory and Reality

Bruhagen, Åsa January 2006 (has links)

Background and problem: It is important for a policy aiming at overcoming discrimination to be justifiable as just or as creating justice. When a policy is implemented lacking such qualities it is argued to be unjust, which creates a problem. During the last decades there has been massive immigration to the Western countries from countries marked by war and disaster. This has created problems of integration into the “new” society, and the use of preferential policies has become increasingly topical. Whether or not the use of preferential policies is a just method is the basis of this thesis.

Aim: The aim of this thesis is to study the concept of preferential policies in an impartial perspective of fairness. By impartial it is meant to present facts speaking both for and against preferential policies as being just. The main question of this thesis is whether or not preferential treatment is a just method to create equality within the society.

Method: A research method of textual analysis has been used combined with an analysis of structure of arguments.

Theoretical framework: First, definitions of discrimination and preferential policies as such are focused upon in the third chapter. Second, the concept of social justice and its connection to preferential policies is treated. The question if preferential policies should be directed towards individuals or groups is a central question in the debate and it will demand its space in this thesis. Here the importance of merit will be discussed. The section about individuals and groups will be followed by a section discussing the importance of ethnic diversity which will be followed by a comparison of the development of preferential policies in the USA and Sweden. Last, there will be a section where an attempt to generalize between arguments is made.

Conclusions and Discussion: In this part a conclusion and a discussion will be presented. Here conclusions will be drawn from the gathered material. Finally there will be a discussion on the subject and of how the research procedure has proceeded.

Challenges and Opportunities in Migrating to Web-based Informations Services : Perspective of Web-based Enterprise

Dong, Zhu January 2008 (has links)

For now, vastly growing Web-technology has matured enough to become an attractiveplatform for business applications and organizational information systems. Indeed, largeand small organizations are increasing their investment in Web-based Information Systems(IS) resources, such as Electronic Commerce, Intranets and Extranets. As DIWA(1999) explained that Web technology is often presented as a 'revolution' in informationsystem technologies in the business press, which could propel change from static, hierarchicalstructures to more dynamic, flexible and 'knowledge-based' organizationalforms. To the companies, more and more legacy information and database systems arebeing migrated to Web-based environments.

This research aims to analyse and advise enterprises to be Web-based enterprise withchallenges and opportunities.

During the research, the author investigated a company that were using the Web-based(applications made available via the World Wide Web) information service. For obtainingreliable conclusions and delivering valuable advises, various research methods wereadopted by the author including qualitative research methodology, analysis, interviews, and literature study. Data was collected through lecture review and in-depth interviews.

Undoubtedly, there are some troubles existed in migrating, such as technologies for restructureinformation system structure, resource distribution, benefit analysis, planningand management, operation and maintenance etc.

But still obviously, as the research shows that there are many benefits can be got followsthe implementation of Web-based solution, which includes improving efficiency, modernizing company IT environment, providing better IS/IT systems’ maintenanceand providing more agility and functionality etc.

Voices of Sri Lanka's Youth : Aspirations and Perceptions of Freedom and Possibilities

Lundell, Andreas January 2008 (has links)

During November and December 2007 a Minor Field Study was conducted in the southwest

of Sri Lanka with the aim of exploring the aspirations and perceptions of freedom and

possibilities among a sample of Sri Lankan youth and also how their situation is viewed upon

by people in their close surroundings. The aim was also try to discern the main concerns and

indicators of unfreedom that in the eye of the informants are viewed as obstacles to

development, to personal human development as well as to the development of Sri Lanka as a

nation. The theoretical framework that was used as inspirational ground and basis for the

formulation of the project, was Amartya Sen’s concept of “development as freedom” and his

“capability approach” which focuses on the human potential and what freedom an individual

enjoys to convert capabilities into desired functionings or the realization of aspirations. This

modern economic theory was tested in this context to find out if it is applicable and relevant

in ethnographic development studies. Despite its lack of numerical metrics, the “capability

approach” seems very relevant to describe the reality of at least the Lankese youth in this

study. As methodology for the qualitative field work, Hadley Cantril’s “aspiration-model”

and his “self-anchoring striving scale” was used which provides a simple, easily applicable

interview technique for exploring the unique reality of an individual and what it shares or

don’t shares with that of others. The results show that there are many strong aspirations

among the Sri Lankan youth; aspirations of being a good person that achieve something in

life, aspirations of being able to take the best care of the family, to go through a qualitative

education and to get a good job with a good salary. Many youth want to go abroad. Of course

there are aspirations of peace in the war-torn country. There are concerns and feelings of

unfreedom that relate to the unemployment situation, a very difficult economic situation in the

country, underdevelopment and inadequate facilities, the ongoing war, and political

unfreedom.

Werner, Sven 03 June 2015 (has links) (PDF)

Negotiating power in the ESL classroom : positioning to learn

Kayi Aydar, Hayriye 10 July 2012 (has links)
This qualitative case study drew on Positioning Theory (e.g., Davies & Harré, 1990) to explore the ways in which the negotiation of power and positioning affected language learning. Participants were nine students and their female teacher in a university-level English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Oral Skills (Listening and Speaking) class. Methods of data collection included the video- and audio-taping of classroom activities for 3.5 months, interviews with students and their teacher, field notes of classroom observations, diaries, and relevant teacher and learning artifacts. As a participant observer, I explored positioning, which refers to locating oneself and others with certain rights and obligations to allow or limit certain actions, in classroom talk and investigated its interaction with second language learning and use. After spending a certain amount of time in the field, I chose two male students as my focal participants, as their positioning and participation differed in terms of quantity and quality of their talk. Through a recursive micro-analysis of classroom interaction and qualitative analysis of other data sources, the findings indicated that the two focal participants constantly dominated classroom conversations and positioned themselves in ways beneficial to them, while other students in the same classroom experienced difficulties in negotiating symbolic power and gaining access to learning opportunities. Additionally the findings showed how interactive and reflexive positioning of learners, which were impacted by a large number of factors, including age, socio-cultural backgrounds, and beliefs, assigned students certain identities and social status over the course of the semester. If second language acquisition is fostered in the classroom by communicative interactions, teachers should attempt to minimize students’ differential access to second language learning opportunities as much as possible. / text

Lawner, Pia January 2015 (has links)
The purpose ofmy studyis to investigatepreschooleducators'approach toreading aloudandstorytellingin preschool.

Brunnander, Emma, Gustafsson, Adina January 2014 (has links)
This qualitative study aims to examine what career opportunities the Swedish employment service Arbetsförmedlingen can provide, as well as how the employees perceive their career development opportunities. Furthermore, we have touched on what it is that makes employees feel satisfied with their job and workplace, and also stay in the organization. The study was conducted on one of Arbetsförmedlingen’s offices in northern Sweden and the informants consisted of six employment agents, an executive assistant and a head of division. The result of the study has been analyzed using theories within the field of career development. Most of the informants have conveyed a positive description of their development opportunities and believe that it is possible to advance vertically as well as horizontally, and within their current role. However, differences were found among the informants regarding the importance of career. In addition several informants believe that the level of stress in the workplace is a problem and that Arbetsförmedlingen should do more to prevent stress.
