A Qualitative Study on Using Animals as Educational Resources in Teaching

Byström, Karin January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to explore different experiences of Animal Assisted Therapy and search into how Animal Assisted Therapy in schools/preschools is already being pursued. To get the answer to my research question, I have done qualitative interviews with people working withAnimal Assisted Therapy in schools and preschools to share their experiences. The purpose of Animal Assisted Therapy may be to practice a specific knowledge, for example reading, but it may also be social interaction, communication, respect and responsibility.During my interviews, I have learned that Animal Assisted Therapyalso increases self-respect, self-esteem and empathy for others. It helps in the understanding of social interaction and respect of humans and animals. The individual becomes more able to take responsibility, communicate with others and take on school work. All my informants believe that the animal contributes to a relaxed, stress- and anxiety-reducing environment, through the hormone Oxytocin. Animal Assisted Therapy can be used as an educational tool in teaching to help students overcome their problems and continue learning.

To this end, subsidies of the Attachment Theory, the literature on mourning and Animal Assisted Therapy were used. This is a research of qualitative and interpretive nature, based on a case study involving a child mourning the loss of his father after a period of one year. A semistructured interview with the mother, playful interviews with the child and a feedback interview with the mother were used as research tools. During the psychodiagnostic process a co-therapist dog was present in the therapeutic setting, and for the data analysis, a content analysis was performed. It was observed that the therapy duo, psychologist and co-therapist dog, assumes the attachment figure to the child. The co-therapist dog acted as a bond formation facilitator, a mediator of the relationship with the therapist and a catalyst for the psychodiagnostic assessment process. The presence of the co-therapist dog also worked as a motivational feature for the child in the psychodiagnostic process, since the animal's presence encouraged the child to return. Although the purpose of this research has been the development of a psychodiagnosis, its results can be extended to the care of bereaved children in the form of a bereavement psychotherapy, to the extent that the animal acts as a resource for coping in the context the child s loss / Dada a necessidade de ampliar o leque de recursos para instrumentalizar o psicólogo em técnicas de intervenção no atendimento a crianças enlutadas, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo compreender as implicações da inserção de um cão coterapeuta no processo psicodiagnóstico dessa população.

Rocha, Regina Célia 15 October 2015 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T20:39:11Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Regina Celia Rocha.pdf: 1509090 bytes, checksum: 619fda39ffa857d546f5d47623759dbd (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-10-15 / The pets visit has been coming in this institution since 2011 and professionals in Health Psychology Team with specialization in ATAA coordinate it. The animal is part into the psychological treatment of patients, such as care and comfort references, basic conditions to cope with cancer. The animal may be a reference to improve the quality of life during treatment and hospitalization, reflecting the strong bond that exists in the relationship, in care measures. Have the opportunity to see the pet, even if for the last time brings a sense, providing opportunities on reframing illness and life - through mendering and renewing therapeutic effects. This study aimed to observe the effects of ATAA, here characterized as 'Pets for Business Programme', in a group of three patients with oncological diseases, admitted to ICESP - Institute of São Paulo State Cancer - Frias Octavius Oliveira, comparing them to the literature on the ATAA. According to literature (Brickell, 1984; Struckus, 1989; Wall, 1994; McVarisch, 1995; Panzer-Koplow, 2000; Sorrell, 2006; Souter & Miller, 2007), the effectiveness of Animals Visit Program ICESP improves and balances the psychological state of cancer patients and their families, enhancing their coping resources on life quality improvement both patients and their families, increasing resilience which minimizes psychologic and behavioral symptoms that interfere into treatment and hospitalization, reducing stress, pain and isolation inherent in the process (DIEFENBECK, BOUFFAR, MATUKAITIS, HASTINGS, and COBLE, 2010; HOROWITZ, 2010). Thus, the Animals Visit Program to ICESP confirms the theory there is a great need to re-humanize health practices, developing and providing up humanistic resources for care. It is not just an ethical issue but also rather an urgent need in healthcare paradigm / A Visita de Animal de Estimação acontece nessa instituição desde 2011, sendo coordenada pelos profissionais da Equipe de Psicologia Hospitalar com Especialização em ATAA.

Health, Wellness, and Ecological Impacts of Horse Therapy for Special Needs Children

Sulkowski, Jennifer Suzanne 01 January 2017 (has links)
The benefits of horse therapy for special needs children have been documented for centuries, but direct experience and perspective from special needs children and their families involved in horse therapy are missing from the literature. The purpose of this study was to enhance understanding on the health, well-being, and ecological impacts of horse therapy for special needs children, and to demonstrate how horse therapy aligns with public health, by interviewing 8 special needs families who utilize the therapy, 8 adults who underwent horse therapy as children, and 12 ecological experts in local communities. Data were hand-coded and organized based on the phenomenology of the horse, the ethnography of horse and horse therapy culture and environment, and grounded theory to explain how and why horse therapy works. All 16 horse therapy participants with diverse challenges and limitations reported a successful experience with concrete changes in health and/or well-being as a result of horse therapy; all 12 ecological experts endorsed horse therapy centers as beneficial fixtures within the communities, despite obvious challenges, such as funding, in running them. Horse therapy can be used to help and support a wide-range of special needs families; horse therapy centers are beneficial assets to local communities and their public health programs. With respect to the social change implications of this study, the information can be used by community members (e.g., doctors, health professionals, occupational therapists, families) to better understand horse therapy and its benefits for special needs children. In an attempt to improve access and promote horse therapy as a viable public health initiative, a basic blueprint for horse therapy center start-up operations has been provided for local communities.

Patientens upplevelser av hundens närvaro i vårdandet / The dog’s potential for the patients health in nursing

Lindberg, David, Hollman, Djana January 2010 (has links)
The dog is man's best friend, but it is only recently that the dog's health benefits have begun to be explored.<strong> </strong>Internationally the dog is used in health care in a different extent than in Sweden. Health effects in form of shorter length of stay, faster rehabilitation and better self-care has been demonstrated. The purpose of literature study was to describe the patients' experiences of the dog's presence in healthcare. The study was a literature review of 15 scientific articles. The results showed that dogs can be used as a complementary treatment to conventional treatment or non-pharmaceutical treatment in the care process. The use of dogs in health care shows positive social ability, increased physical activity and psychological improvement for the patient. Although changes in patients with reduced activity was noticeable with increased motivation and initiative. The dog gives a distracting effect which put away thoughts on aches and problems in daily life, the dog also gives protection and companionship. Given the importance of activating old and passive patients should be acknowledged. More research is needed on the effects from the dog from both from the patient, personal and social perspective. Knowledge of the subject provides an opportunity for the nurse to use this resource in the care of the patient.</p>

Hundens roll i omvårdnaden av personer med demenssjukdom / The Dog’s Role in Caring for People with Dementia

Fredlund, Anna, Persson, Malin January 2013 (has links)

Sociologiskt perspektiv på Hästunderstödd terapi / Sociological perspectives on Equine-assisted therapy

Kandre, Sofie January 2013 (has links)
