This dissertation investigates the semantic coherence in the indexing of journal articles in the public health area, in Portuguese, indexed in the Scientific Production Repository of the National School of Public Health Sergio Arouca (ENSP) of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), aiming to contribute With the semantic interoperability between the repositories of this Foundation. The research is based on the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the areas of thematic representation and documentary linguistics, within the scope of the Organization of Knowledge in CI, as well as in Bibliometrics, and its goals are: (a) to verify comparatively the semantic coherence in the indexing of articles Scientists in the field of public health; (B) to investigate the occurrence of indexation terms in light of quantitative bibliometric models used in indexing in Information Science; (C) provide evidence of the importance of the discursive genre scientific journal article in the area of public health; (D) identify the terms-figure and background terms of the articles analyzed for a better understanding of the informativeness of scientific texts; (E) contribute to the advancement of knowledge about phenomena that guide the indexing of scientific information, particularly on semantic coherence in indexing information in the health area. For that, 10 articles from Brazilian scientific journals, published in open access between 2012-2014 and registered in the Scientific Production Repository of the ENSP / Fiocruz, were analyzed. The articles were processed in the software RankWord and WordSmith 6.0, applying later the laws of Zipf and Goffman Transition Point to identify the terms of high semantic load of the texts. The terms selected in each article were compared in the 5 (five) indicators used in the research: Goffman Region T; Expressions WordSmith 6.0, Keywords; DeCS (Descriptors in Health Sciences) and Title. The results were compiled using the discourse plan of the sentences, with emphasis on terms used as foregrounding and in terms used as background, helping to verify the degree of coherence between the articles. The data collected reveal a low degree of semantic coherence in most articles studied. We suggest an investigation with an expanded sample to confirm the data obtained, especially when dealing with articles published in Portuguese in the health area and its importance in national scientific communication.

For purposes of analysis, Two text versions were selected, prepared in 2011 and 2013, resulting respectively from Project ART (Application and theoretical reflection in the classroom: linguistic analysis as support for the text production of students from a public school in the State of Paraná) and DAT (Diagnostics and Theoretical Application in the Classroom: income verification and evaluation of the teaching of linguistic analysis and textual production of middle school students from a public school in the State of Paraná). From these productions, we organized cuts due to the occurrence of and in which the sense deriving from the connector was different from that conveyed by Traditional Grammar. The proposal of this work resides in the analysis of the connective in the cuts, based on theoreticians such as Quirk and Greenbaum (1987), Neves (2000; 2006) and Corbari (2005), with the purpose of evaluating whether the cutouts accommodate uses of and where it is possible to measure different semantic manifestations of the additive, considering that it is a linguistic element that triggers semantic-argumentative relations not foreseen by traditional grammar, such as cause, explication, conclusion, among others. We verified that, in fact, the e translates semantic possibilities different from those predicted by the Traditional Grammar and that these possibilities can be modified by reason of the textual genre in which the connective manifests and the degree of engagement that the producer of the statement chooses to demonstrate or not.

Ana Paula Fabro de Oliveira 16 December 2010 (has links)
The present research aims at identifying the procedures and mechanisms, verbal and verbally-visual, used by the scientific diffusion speech to children, written by SBPC (Brazilian Society to the Science Progress) and materialized in cover articles of the magazine Ciência Hoje das Crianças Childrens Science Today. This research considers how this speech is aimed and led by its presumed addressee, and also identifies how and for which purpose the dialogical relations are established between verbal and visual compositional forms. This research is based on the notions proposed by the Bakhtin Circle, such as dialogism, completion, sphere and utterance addressing. Focusing on cover articles for this project building and the speech wills of a historically and socially situated subject, the work explores two hypothesis. The first deals with the diffusion of scientific knowledge to children, so that the language is the bridge that connects the author, science and scientist and addressee (children) more than only a thematic selection of scientific issues which could interest the children. The second hypothesis deals with the scientific speech addressed to the little ones. The reincidence of the lexical resources typical to the day-by-day ideology is moved by the objective of make it understood. The analysis taken from the corpus enlightened two main kinds of dialogical relations: 1) dialogism between the authors instances from the author-scientist and the illustrator; and 2) dialogical movements towards the readers universe.

Democracy Spinning backwards? : A study of agency advocacy in Sweden

Andersson, Jenny, Nilsson, Stina January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to assess whether agency advocacy in newspapers debate articles has increased since the 1970’s and what forms agency advocacy take. This is done by investigating if the number or share of debate articles written by agencies increased from the 1970’s to the 2000’s, what types of communication approaches and subjects that are used over the years. The theoretical approach is based on research about new public management (NPM) and mediatisation through a normative institutionalist perspective. It is mainly a quantitative study where we collect debate articles from four different decades and code the content according to three ideal types: information, agency advocacy by promoting issue and agency advocacy by legitimating agency.  The thesis finds that the share and to some extent the number of debate articles has increased over the years, which supports the NPM theory and in part mediatisation theory. All ideal types are present; agency advocacy exists in all analysed debate articles while information is highly absent.  There is little change over the years which make it difficult to assess which theory that is supported.

Manipulation in Newspaper Articles : A Political Discourse Analysis of Lexical Choice and Manipulation in Japanese Newspaper Crisis Reporting in the case of North Korea

Zouave, Sonia January 2014 (has links)
This paper analyzes some forms of linguistic manipulation in Japanese in newspapers when reporting on North Korea and its nuclear tests. The focus lies on lexical ambiguity in headlines and journalist’s voices in the body of the articles, that results in manipulation of the minds of the readers. The study is based on a corpus of nine articles from two of Japan’s largest newspapers Yomiuri Online and Asahi Shimbun Digital. The linguistic phenomenon that contribute to create manipulation are divided into Short Term Memory impact or Long Term Memory impact and examples will be discussed under each of the categories. The main results of the study are that headlines in Japanese newspapers do not make use of an ambiguous, double grounded structure. However, the articles are filled with explicit and implied attitudes as well as attributed material from people of a high social status, which suggests that manipulation of the long term memory is a tool used in Japanese media.

RELAÇÕES INTERSEMIÓTICAS EM REPORTAGENS DE CAPA DE SUPERINTERESSANTE / INTERSEMIOTIC RELATIONS IN FEATURE ARTICLES FROM SUPERINTERESSANTE

Ferreira, Janaina Carvalho 29 February 2012 (has links)
The main goal of the present study is to investigate the intersemiotic relations between text and image in feature articles from the Brazilian popular science magazine Superinteressante. The corpus consists of 12 multimodal feature articles published between February and December, 2009. This particular time period was chosen because in August of the same year the magazine implemented a visual remodeling, and in order to examine to what extent this affected the roles of text and image in the genre, we chose the six issues published immediately before the change (from February to July, 2009 - Phase 1) and the six issues published immediately after the change (from August to December, 2009 - Phase 2). In addition to intersemiotic relations, we also compared the issues in terms of visual transformations based on the Grammar of Visual Design (KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 1996; 2006). The analysis of the intersemiotic relations was guided by the system of status and logico-semantic image-text relations proposed by Martinec and Salway (2005). The results show that the visual remodeling affected the genre, as the role of images was extended from an essentially interpersonal function in Phase 1 to greater representational value in Phase 2, as drawings, schemes, graphs and maps carry content which is not in the verbal language of the feature articles. The analysis of the intersemiotic relations of two exemplars revealed that, in Phase 1, the status between text and image is predominantly unequal, with the image being subordinated to the text, while in Phase 2 the status between both languages is equal. Considering logico-semantic relations, in Phase 1, most of the times the text adds information to the image, in a logico-semantic relation of Expansion, while in Phase 2, the information in text and image have the same level of generality, in a logico-semantic relation of Exposition. These findings contribute to support the argument about the increasing importance of visual language in contemporary communication, which in turn highlight the need for the development of multiliteracies.

Exploring NMF and LDA Topic Models of Swedish News Articles

Svensson, Karin, Blad, Johan January 2020 (has links)
The ability to automatically analyze and segment news articles by their content is a growing research field. This thesis explores the unsupervised machine learning method topic modeling applied on Swedish news articles for generating topics to describe and segment articles. Specifically, the algorithms non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) and the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) are implemented and evaluated. Their usefulness in the news media industry is assessed by its ability to serve as a uniform categorization framework for news articles. This thesis fills a research gap by studying the application of topic modeling on Swedish news articles and contributes by showing that this can yield meaningful results. It is shown that Swedish text data requires extensive data preparation for successful topic models and that nouns exclusively and especially common nouns are the most suitable words to use. Furthermore, the results show that both NMF and LDA are valuable as content analysis tools and categorization frameworks, but they have different characteristics, hence optimal for different use cases. Lastly, the conclusion is that topic models have issues since they can generate unreliable topics that could be misleading for news consumers, but that they nonetheless can be powerful methods for analyzing and segmenting articles efficiently on a grand scale by organizations internally. The thesis project is a collaboration with one of Sweden’s largest media groups and its results have led to a topic modeling implementation for large-scale content analysis to gain insight into readers’ interests.

Candelario Ramírez , Frank Eduardo, Ochoa Medina, Jesús Alberto, Ulloque Anticona , Lizbeth Erika, Vargas Tapia, Ariana Elizabeth, Vargas Zambrano, Babsy Helen 05 December 2020 (has links)
The current project reflects the development of a business idea proposed by a group of students from the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences (UPC). Each of the skills acquired by each member during the course of the race were put into practice at work. The first point was to recognize the problem at the current juncture, the population needs to stay longer at home and fight the COVID-19 virus; because the contagion rate is not controlled. The medical community also reported the importance of maintaining a healthy life to maintain an organism fit to reduce the impact of the virus. For this reason, we develop a service so that people have access to benefits that allow them to maintain a healthy life from home without having to expose themselves on the street. The target audience selected was people aged 18 to 50 years of age from the NSE A - B, belonging to Lima Modern. Profit Gym was therefore founded, a web platform that offers comprehensive training plans and nutrition consulting together; accompanied by a virtual store that offers complementary products to achieve the goal of each user.
