These relations are made through classification of complex bundle line, and these results are used to introduce a cranked Hamiltonian. In general, we also show that the parameter space is a flag manifold or a submanifold of her and present a topologic argument of this space that indicates the relation between the structure Riemannian and the Berry s connection.

Vuil (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) em tecido sintético / Development of self-inoculation trap for controlling Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) with Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuil (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) in synthetic fabric

Luiz Henrique Costa Mota 21 January 2013 (has links)
The control of Hypothenemus hampei is accomplished primarily with the use of chemical insecticides, mainly endossulfan, whose commercialization will be prohibited in Brazil in July 2013. Therefore, other strategies must be integrated seeking control of this pest with less impact on the environment. In this context, the fungus Beauveria bassiana stands out as one of the most promising biological control agents. In this study, we associated the technique of fabric impregnated with B. bassiana with a trap containing a mixture methanol: ethanol (1:1 v/v) as an attractive chemical for H. hampei, aiming the self-inoculation and fungus dissemination by the insect, therefore their control. Initially, we determined in the laboratory, the virulence of nine isolates of B. bassiana using a spray suspension of 107 conidia.mL-1 directly on adults of H. hampei. All isolates showed low virulence to insects, with maximum mortality of 38.5%. The isolate ESALQ-PL63 was chosen to continue the studies for having a market register. Subsequently, seven synthetic fabrics were evaluated for the production of the selected isolate on its surface under two light conditions (photofase of 0 and 12 hours). The synthetic fabric Lã \"Sherpa\" was selected because it allows greater conidia production under the two conditions tested, reaching 5.44 × 108 conidia.cm-2. Exposure of H. hampei to the fabric impregnated with the fungus for only 5 seconds was enough to cause 88.5% of insect mortality. In an area of shaded coffee, two experiments were conducted to evaluate a self-inoculation trap containing the pathogen. We used two control traps without fungus: one self-inoculation trap without the fungus and a widely recognized efficient trap (IAPAR model). The collection efficiency of the self-inoculation trap with the fungus was lower than that of the IAPAR trap, however, it proved effective in contamination and insect mortality caused by the fungus. In the first experiment, mortality caused by the pathogen at the last evaluation day (151 days) was 64.7%. The viability of the conidia surpassed 98.3% after the assembly of the traps and 86.9%, after 65 days. After 160 days, the viability decreased to 44.0%. In the second experiment, the last evaluation was performed after 40 days, when we observed mortality of 89.9% and conidia viability of 78.1%. In both experiments, the conidia concentration reduced over time. The self-inoculation system showed promising results, but changes are needed to increase insect catches and further epizootiological studies to assess the possibility of disease spread in the field by insects that crossed the trap.

Estratégias de utilização de Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae) para o manejo de Hypothenemus hampei  (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) / Use strategies of Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae) for the management of Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Luiz Henrique Costa Mota 03 April 2017 (has links)
Hypothenemus hampei, presents bioecological and behavioral aspects that hinders its control, such as its cryptic nature, remaining inside the coffee bean most of its life cycle and for presenting several generations per year. A large number of coffee beans carrying H. hampei drop to the ground, providing an excellent way for insect survival in the off season and as a source for new infestations of berries. The control of H. hampei must thus be made in the period when the females leave the beans where they were born until the moment they colonize new fruits to reproduce. Biopesticide based with Beauveria bassiana is an option available for the control of H. hampei; however, there is little evidence of its effectiveness in the field. The objective of this study was to evaluate strategies to use B. bassiana in the management of H. hampei in three ways: i) aqueous spray with adjuvants, ii) attractive trap of autoinoculation and iv) inoculation of the pathogen into the soil with chemical fertilazers. Direct spraying of suspensions of fungal conidia with adjuvant Tween 80 resulted in lower mortality of H. hampei than suspensions with the other adjuvants tested in the laboratory. The effectiveness of the adjuvant with the fungus varied with the inoculation method. Direct sprays on the insects reduced mortalities (23 - 53%), while immersion and the methods that allowed the insects to have contact with the conidia in the substrate (fruit or filter paper) after spraying, resulted in greater mortality (63 - 98%). Ultramorphological images of H. hampei, inoculated by different methods, suggest that the ventral region of the abdomen is the primary site of infection of the fungus since, unlike the other methods, the direct spray that resulted in reduced mortality, large quantity of conidia adhered and germinated were observed in the elytron compared to the ventral region. Three models of autoinoculation traps were compared in a shaded coffee plantation and in the full sun. Capture of H. hampei was superior in ESALQHh2. The management of H. hampei with trap ESALQ-Hh2 was assessed at a coffee plantation under full sun from fruit formation until harvest. On average, 6.6% of H. hampei was infected by Beauveria sp. in plants 4 and 8 m distant from the traps and no insect was infected in the plots with the same traps, but without the fungus. There was a reduction in concentration and viability of the pathogen in the traps over time; however, mortality of H. hampei exposed to the fungus were high (73 - 100%) during the 148 days of evaluation. Studies conducted in laboratory revealed that the flight capacity of H. hampei was not affected by the load of conidia adhered to its body when compared to insects without exposure to the fungus. Furthermore, only 5% of insects exposed to the fungus managed to penetrate the coffee bean, indicating low potential damage. Inoculation of conidia of B. bassiana, along with granulated chemical fertilizers in the soil of the coffee plantation, reduced (34 and 50%) the infestation of H. hampei compared the plots with only the application of fertilizers. It is suggested that the management of this pest with B. bassiana presents greater potential in the short term by spraying only during the period of transit of colonizing females and in the medium and long term through the application of the pathogen to the soil together with fertilizers and autoinoculation traps.

Experimental Design and Implementation of Two Dimensional Transformations of Light in Waveguides and Polarization

Runyon, Matthew January 2017 (has links)
Photonics, the technological field that encompasses all aspects of light, has been rapidly growing and increasingly useful in uncovering fundamental truths about nature. It has helped detect gravitational waves, allowed for a direct measurement of the quantum wave function, and has helped realize the coldest temperatures in the universe. But photonics has also had an enormous impact on day-to-day life as well; it has enabled high capacity and/or high speed telecommunication, offered cancer treatment solutions, and has completely revolutionized display and scanning technology. All of these discoveries and applications have required a superb understanding of light, but also a high degree of control over the sometimes abstract properties of light. The work contained in this thesis explores two novel means of controlling and manipulating two different abstract properties of light. In Part I, the property under investigation is the polarization state of light – a property that is paramount to all light-matter interactions, and even some light-light interactions such as interference. Here, a liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulator (LCOS-SLM)’s capabilities in manipulating the polarization state of light is theoretically examined and experimentally exploited, tested, and reported on. It is found through experimentation that, for an appropriate range of beam sizes and input polarizations, a single LCOS-SLM can be used to produce any light field with an arbitrary, spatially varying polarization profile. In Part II, the property under investigation loosely corresponds to light’s spatial degree of freedom – how light can move from one spot in space to another in a non-trivial manner. Here, control over light’s position through a waveguide array through the use of quantum geometric phase is theoretically examined, simulated, and experimentally designed. It is found through simulation that a threewaveguide array is capable of implementing two dimensional unitary transformations. The common theme between Part I and Part II is manipulating these properties of light to realize classes of general transformations. Moreover, if the light field is treated as a quantum state in the basis of either property under investigation, a two dimensional computational basis ensues. This is precisely the right cardinality for applications in quantum information.

Plan de negocio para la venta de aguaymanto deshidratado, como alimento saludable (“superfood”), para deportistas en California, Estados Unidos / Business plan for the sale of dehydrated aguaymanto as a healthy food (“superfood”) for athletes in California, United States

Cerrón Balcázar, María, Escalante Salas, Neil, Chilet Najera, Fernando, Sachún Sarmiento, William 03 November 2021 (has links)
The aguaymanto is an Andean fruit with many beneficial properties for health, in addition to being considered a superfood, which makes it an exotic food with high nutritional value. The dehydration process, by which the water is removed from the fruit, ensures that all its properties are preserved, extending its life span. With the global trend to consume healthy foods, the United States (specifically California) is presented as the most attractive market due to the high percentage of athletes who value this type of food. The aguaymanto is already marketed in the United States in different presentations, even dehydrated. However, our project seeks to establish the following competitive advantages: Target market made up of athletes and people who exercise. Convenient packaging for transport. Commercial alliances with specialized stores and healthy food distributors. High quality of the product. The outsourcing of production and distribution processes avoid a high initial cost for the Know-how and allow the project to start with a company with few people focused on marketing, supervision and management processes. Each of the project's edges will be reflected in the financial analysis, where we conclude that a significant initial investment is required to start the company, which will be covered by equity capital and debt. In addition, through the cash flow tool, we will know the creation of the economic value of the project and the payback period of the investment. / Trabajo de investigación

The Effects of Foliar Nutrient Applications on Split, Yield, and Internal Fruit Quality of 'Wonderful' Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.)

Chater, John Matthew 01 December 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Fruit split is the most important physiological disorder in pomegranate production, causing devastating crop losses worldwide. Foliar nutrient applications have been used experimentally to mitigate pomegranate fruit split but none have been conducted using the industry standard cultivar, Wonderful, and little is known about the effects of foliar nutrient applications on pomegranate. Additionally, investigations into putative health benefits of pomegranate fruit have increased interest in its production but limited evidence exists regarding effects of agricultural practices such as foliar fertilizer applications on internal fruit quality. ‘Wonderful’ pomegranate trees at 2 commercial orchards were treated with foliar applications of ZnSO4 (3000 mg∙L-1, 4000 mg∙L-1, or 5000 mg∙L-1), MgSO4 (1%, 2%, or 3%), KNO3 (1%, 2%, or 3%), or deionized (DI) water (control). Fruit were analyzed for fruit split incidence, yield, fruit number per tree, fruit diameter, fruit mass, mass of all arils in fruit, mass of 100 arils, total soluble solids (TSS), titratable acidity (TA), antioxidant activity (AA), total phenolics (TP), and mineral nutrient concentrations of leaves and fruit. Foliar applications of MgSO4 and ZnSO4 resulted in significantly lower fruit split incidence. Treatments had no significant effect on fruit number per tree, fruit diameter, and mass, mass of all arils in fruit, or mass of 100 arils. Leaf N, K, S, Mn, and Zn were significantly affected by the treatments. TSS and TA were not affected significantly by treatments. AA ranged from 77.8-84.3 percent inhibition of 2,2’-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and TP ranged from 2489-3046 mg·L-1 gallic acid equivalents, with some KNO3 treatments significantly affecting these parameters. Fruit mineral nutrient concentrations were characterized and Zn-treated trees had greater fruit Zn concentrations. The results suggest that foliar ZnSO4 or MgSO4 could be used to decrease fruit split incidence and increase nutritional content of ‘Wonderful’ pomegranate and any of the three tested foliar nutrients could be applied as a foliar fertilizer without negatively impacting fruit yield, size, internal quality, bioactivity, or mineral nutrient concentration.

Cellular factors that affect table grape berry firmness

Du Plessis, Beatrix W. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MscAgric (Viticulture and Oenology))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / The South African table grape industry is under great pressure to produce table grapes of the best quality for the export markets. Quality defects such as poor colour, inadequate berry firmness, browning and soft tissue breakdown cause great losses in export. The firmness of table grapes is one of the major factors determining the eating quality of grapes. Consumers prefer grapes with a firmer flesh above those with soft flesh. Firmer berries are commonly accepted to have better eating quality and longer cold storage capacity. Factors that promote and maintain berry firmness are only speculated about; therefore producers cannot effectively control the development of firmer berries by managerial practises or by applying specific sprays. The study was done on Redglobe and two Waltham Cross clones (the firmer Clone 8 and softer Clone 13). The aim of this study was two-fold. Firstly the cellular and ultracellular differences between the tissues of firm and soft berries were determined. The effect of gibberellic acid (GA3), synthetic cytokinin (CPPU) and bunch applied calcium sprays on the cellular and ultracellular structure of berry tissues were also under investigation. Secondly, the effects of GA3, CPPU and bunch directed calcium sprays on berry firmness, eating quality and storage capacity were determined. To determine the cellular and ultracelular structure of berry tissues, light microscope (LM) and transmission electron (TEM) studies were done. In order to investigate the effect of different sprays on berry firmness, 20 mg/L GA3 (GA3 treatment) was applied at 10mm average berry size; 20 mg/L GA3 plus 3 mg/L CPPU (CPPU treatment) was applied at 10 mm average berry size; and a mixture of 8 L/ha Stopit® and 5 L/ha Caltrac® (calcium treatment) was applied directly to the bunches every two weeks from berry set till veraison for the calcium treatments. The control received no plant bioregulators (PBR’s). The treatments were the same for both cultivars. Grapes were stored three weeks at 0 °C and one week at 10 °C after which it was evaluated for loose berries, botrytis infections, rachis browning and berry split. Afterwards it was tasted by an independent tasting panel. Firm berries were found to have an opaque coloured flesh while soft berries had a gel-like translucent flesh. For berries with normal firmness, the opaque flesh is limited to the outer mesocarp of the berry. Extremely firm berries’ whole mesocarp consisted of the opaque coloured flesh while soft berries’ mesocarp consisted of mostly the gel-like translucent flesh with, in some cases, a very thin layer of opaque flesh just under the skin. Berry firmness was not related to cell size as the cell size of the tissues in the firm and soft berries were identical. Cell shape seems to play an important role in berry firmness. The cells in the opaque coloured flesh of the outer mesocarp are more turgid and oval than those in the gel-like flesh of the inner mesocarp. Berry firmness is therefore determined by the thickness of the outer mesocarp with the opaque coloured flesh that contains turgid cells. The thickness of cell walls between the different tissues did not differ. There was however a difference between the cell contents and the plasmalemmas of the inner and outer mesocarp. The plasmalemma and tonoplast of the outer mesocarp cells was more intact than those of the inner mesocarp. The membranes in the inner mesocarp are more subtracted form the cell wall than in the outer mesocarp. Both the PBR’s and calcium treatments cause a delay in sugar accumulation in the case of Redglobe and Waltham Cross. The CPPU treatment results in significantly bigger and firmer berries for both cultivars. In the case of Redglobe, this treatment cause bigger cells in the outer mesocarp suggesting a correlation between berry firmness and cell size. In the case of Waltham Cross, however, cell size did not play a role in berry size and firmness; instead the rate of cell division earlier in berry development. The CPPU treatment was the only treatment that maintains berry firmness during cold storage for Redglobe while GA3 and CPPU did so in the case of Waltham Cross. PBR’s seems to have no effect on cell wall thickness. In the case of Redglobe, the calcium treatments resulted in significantly thinner cell walls, but this can not be explained. Calcium and GA3 treatments had a negative effect on grape quality after cold storage of both Redglobe and Waltham Cross. The Waltham Cross CPPU treatment results in better taste and colour as observed by the tasting panel, while in the case of Redglobe, the tasting panel preferred the control. It is found that the use of CPPU in combination with GA3 had the best effect on the eating quality, storage capacity, berry size and firmness. When a producer decides to use the CPPU treatment in order to improve berry firmness, he must realize that it can cause delayed ripening which can affect the export of the fruit.

The effect of different irrigation frequencies in combination with boron and calcium bunch applications on berry split of SoutherngrapeOne

Koekemoer, Abraham Leander 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric (Viticulture and Oenology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The table grape industry employ a wide range of viticultural management practices in order to produce the high quality grapes demanded by the export market. A common contributor to degrading the quality of table grapes is the occurrence of berry split, which not only has an unattractive visual effect, but also increases the berries’ susceptibility to infection by spoilage organisms. A number of environmental conditions such as rainfall and humidity, and/or agricultural practices, such as irrigation, and high density canopies, can lead to higher plant cell water content. This in turn, can increase the potential of berry split to occur. To date, the main method of berry split prevention has been the management of plant water status by; (i) regulating irrigation withdrawal times, and (ii) covering of canopies if rainfall is predicted prior to harvest. The aim of this study was to determine the effect that irrigation frequency, as induced by irrigation withdrawals; as well as boron (B) and calcium (Ca) treatments, applied as bunch directed sprays, have on pre- and post-harvest berry split. To this end, a newly released late ripening, white seedless cultivar, SoutherngrapeOne was chosen as a model cultivar as it has a high susceptibility to berry split. SoutherngrapeOne vines were subsequently subjected to a range of irrigation frequencies based on typical irrigation scheduling used in the table grape industry, which comprised of a low, medium and high frequency. The low frequency was duplicated in order to demonstrate the effect that a heavy irrigation, just before harvest may have on berry split. These treatments were further subdivided to investigate the effect that B and Ca may have on berry split. For the B treatment, four Solubor1 bunch directed sprays were applied from 8mm berry size to véraison. The Ca treatment consisted of Stopit R 2 and Caltrac R 3 bunch directed sprays applied over the same period. In addition, a combination of the B and Ca treatment were applied to investigate any possible interaction. To account for the effect of water as solvent in the B and Ca treatments, and the spraying effect, pure water as treatment was also evaluated. Control vines received no sprays. The applied irrigation treatments resulted in different plant water status conditions. Separate applications of B and Ca treatments resulted in a decrease of B and Ca content in the flesh respectively. The control and combination treatment, of B and Ca resulted in the same of B and Ca content in the flesh. Furthermore, none of the applied treatments resulted in an increase of either B or Ca content in the berry skin. It was found that the medium frequency irrigation resulted in the best irrigation strategy to prevent pre-harvest berry split. Surprisingly, all the subtreatments: B, Ca, and combination of B and Ca, resulted in an increased incidence of pre-harvest berry split when compared to the control group for the 2006/07 season. However, in the 2007/08 season only the B treatment resulted in an increase of pre-harvest berry split. Concerning post-cold-storage physiological disorders, Ca treatments appear to have reduced berry drop, but increased decay. In the 2006/07 season, the B treatment resulted in reduced post-cold-storage berry split, whereas Btreatment in the 2007/08 season had no effect. Both B and Ca should be considered as having the potential to increase the appearance of hairline cracking. Calcium treatment also led to an increase in decay which may have been as a result of the splitting it contributed to. Low frequency irrigation recieving irrigation before harvest was found to result in browner stems. Low irrigation frequencies decreased the cell size of the berry skin. The Ca treatment gave rise to thicker (weaker) cell walls, this morphological change may be responsible for the physiological disorders it caused. From these findings, it can be deduced that poorly managed irrigation, together with unnecessary application of B and/or Ca may result in an increase of berry split and other physiological disorders, with subsequent financial losses for the producer.
