Debutanten - morgondagens författare? : en undersökning om debutanter och folkbibliotekens inköp av deras böcker / The debutant - the author of tomorrow? : an examination about debutants and the public libraries´acquisition of their books

Andersson, Ann-Cathrin, Pettersson, Eva-Lena January 1997 (has links)
The main purpose of this study was to examine how a selection of 1993 year's first books had been spread to a selection of public libraries in 161 municipals. The state 's cultural policy recommends that it is the public libraries' duty to lead the way to new, unknown authors. We wanted to find out if this was fulfilled. The spreading of the books was scrutinized from a number of variables, e.g. gender of the authors, reviews and size of the municipals. Furthermore, 28 public libraries answered an inquiry regarding their acquisition policy concerning first books. The conclusion was that the libraries did not fulfil the state's cultural policy satisfyingly. and this applied particularly to the smaller municipals. 70 % of the public libraries that answered the inquiry confirmed that they have a responsibility for making these books accessible to borrowers. One of the reasons why the libraries did not fulfil the policy was economic. In this situation the libraries often choose those books which are most requested by the borrowers.

Vinylskivans roll och status på dagens folkbibliotek / The vinyl record’s roll and status at today’s public libraries

Sager, Bengt January 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis work is to bring out the causes of public libraries preservation or phase-out of vinyl collections. The study in this thesis work makes a survey as a first step in figuring out what role vinyl record have at today’s public libraries as there is missing information about what the vinyl records changed status has meant for public libraries. What factors have been critical of what the public libraries have done or doing with their vinyl collections today? What role does the public library’s music responsible staff think the vinyl records have at the public library today? As a theoretic frame Taljas three different music perspective/repertoire at music libraries were used, the general education repertoire, the alternative repertoire, and the demand repertoire. The collection of the empirical material was collected with help of quantitative phone interviews. E-mails were sent to 107 public libraries asking them to take part in the study. Out of 58 replies 28 ended up participating in the study. The results showed that most libraries have had vinyl records. The factors that played a part in what the libraries had done with their vinyl collections were the following. Pro phase-out: cd records, less demand, lack of space, and move to new location.Pro preservation: cultural value, local value, and they have remained.According to the staff in charge of the music collection, the vinyl record has had a very small role in the libraries which will remain unchanged, but they do think that the vinyl record is an important upholder of culture.

En studie om hanteringen av Rasbiologiska institutets samling och känsligt material vid Uppsala universitet / A study of the treatment of The Swedish institute of racial biology’s collection and sensitive material at University of Uppsala

Nilsson, Johan January 2012 (has links)
The Swedish institute of racial biology was the first of its kind in the world. The purpose of their activity was to gather information about the different kind of racial characters of the Swedish population. They did this by traveling around the country gathering pictures and statistic information. In 1958 it was decided that the institute was going to get integrated with the University of Uppsala and change its research focus to a more medical genetic. Most of the research material also got integrated into the university’s library. The purpose of this paper is to find out how the institutes collection has been handled through the ages and if there have been any controversy or debate about it. To put it in perspective I also want to see how the University of Uppsala handles other sensitive materials in their collection. The collection has always been open to everyone who wanted to take part of its content. But the documentation of the collections handling has been poor and quite a big part of the collection has been lost, for unknown reasons. The only part of it that has been restricted is the material that contains pictures of naked children. These restrictions were set just a few years ago by Uppsala University, and they are almost ineffective since the librarians have no means to uphold them. There seems to be a lack of discussion about the handling of material of a sensitive nature on behalf of the librarian community. Since there apparently needs to be some sort of restrictions towards some material in the libraries collections, this restrictions need to be discussed so they get the desired effects. / Program: Bibliotekarie

An investigation into fiction collections and reading promotionat Swedish academic libraries.

Bakker, Barbara January 2014 (has links)
Swedish university libraries traditionally collect recreational readingmaterial only to support the teaching and research interests of theirinstitutions. However many university libraries hold a substantial yetunspecified collection of popular fiction. This thesis investigates theextent of these collections and examines academic librarians' viewsabout students' recreational reading in the academic context and theirattitudes towards the role of fiction and of readers' advisory inacademic libraries. The theoretical framework includes literature andresearch about the benefits of reading for pleasure, collections' rolesand readers' advisory strategies. The empirical material was gatheredthrough quantitative surveys sent to academic librarians in Sweden. The results show that academic librarians are positive about thebenefits of recreational reading for university students. However themajority of them do not believe that it is their responsibility to provideleisure reading material or promote extracurricular reading. Based onthe literature review, on the theoretical framework and on the researchfindings, recommendations are made with respect to further researchand readers' advisory strategies.

The distribution of user influence on local collections in a floating collection

Bublik, Iva, Eriksson, Emma January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge about how floating collections can be distributed in different areas of a city. The focus of the study is to see how the library use that influences the floating collections is distributed across the city of Gothenburg and what consequences it may have for access to media in different locations around the city. The research questions posed are: How is the use of library collections distributed in a city with a floating collection? How does user influence shape the local collections in a floating collection? and How do librarians in Gothenburg deal with the effects of a floating collection? The empirical material is official statistics collected from libraries in Gothenburg. The statistics include the number of reservations, borrowed media and returned media from each library and also the turn over rate of the circulation. The theoretical framework that is being used is Michael K. Bucklands theory of the roles of collections. The results show that the collections are unevenly distributed in some areas, that users are more inclined to make reservations for media incertain areas and that librarians sometimes make reservations to their workplace to even out unbalances.

Jämförelse av betesskador på sådda och planterade tallplantor - under en tvåårsperiod i södra Östergötland / Comparison of browsing damage to sown and planted pine plants - over a two-year period in southern Östergötland

Andersson, Jonatan January 2022 (has links)

Hiller, Sandra, Ågren, Samuel January 2023 (has links)

Flytande bestånd och barnbibliotek : en intervjustudie med sex barnbibliotekarier / Floating collections and children`s libraries : an interview study with six children`s librarians

Åslund Jerkvall, Lina January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences and perceptions of children`s librarians regarding floating collections in public libraries in Gothenburg. In focus for the study are the experiences and perceptions that exist among children`s librarians when it comes to children as library users, the librarian`s working tasks and the professional role as a librarian. The empirical material has been collected through semistructured interviews with six children`s librarians. The material has been analyzed twice. The first analysis has been conducted through qualitative content analysis. The second analysis has been conducted by using a tool constructed with inspiration from Maj Klasson`s and Anders Ørom`s theories of the professional roles and identities of a librarian. One major finding is that the informants percept children as different from grown-ups in their role as library users. The way children are makes it difficult for them to get their needs satisfied in a library system that practices floating collections. On the other hand the perception that children can learn what it takes to be able to act functionally within floating collections also exists among the interviewed librarians. Another finding is that literature mediation and collection development are working tasks that are influenced by floating collections. The study also indicates that the librarian role as a literature mediator and the role as a librarian that puts the user first are threatened as the marketing role and the role as a mediator of technical knowledge dominate when floating collection is practiced as a media strategy. / Program: Bibliotekarie

Queer manga och manhwa på folkbibliotek / Queer manga and manhwa in public libraries

Andersson, Lena, Wilander, Mikael January 2009 (has links)
We believed that knowledge organisation of manga and manhwa with homosexual (including lesbian) themes might be a challenge for Swedish public libraries. One of the reasons for this is that these themes in manga and manhwa usually occur in genres not directed towards an LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) audience. To see how Swedish public libraries treat such titles and why they treat them as they do, we examined a selection of public libraries, their collections, acquisitions, cataloguing and shelving of relevant titles. The theory used is mainly Grant Campbell’s binarisms, subject access to LGBTQ literature and critical analysis of knowledge organisation. Three methods were utilised: online directory searches, a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with librarians. We found a number of relevant titles. Among the selection criterions used, librarians mentioned acquisition requests and title reviews. Several libraries did not perform original cataloguing or did not use subject headings indicating homosexual themes. Some of the subject headings used to indicate such themes were manga terms, others were terms directed towards users seeking literature with homosexual themes. Shelving practises varied slightly, depending, among other things, on what librarians perceived to be the target audience. Some libraries displayed titles with homosexual themes during occasions such as pride festivals. Overall, the libraries we examined claimed not to give any special treatment to titles with homosexual themes. How much work the librarians put into facilitating searches for these titles varied by their personal interest and time available.

A qualitative study on collection and collection management at five hospital libraries’ children and youth sections

Elfving, Johan, Engman Fingal, Sandra January 2008 (has links)
The main purpose of this thesis was to examine the collection management at five different hospital libraries´ children and youth’s section to discern different roles of the collections. We made qualitative interviews with five hospital librarians. The purpose was also to see how the collection development affected the different roles of the collections. We used two theories. One involves six dimensions of collection development and the other involves the purposes of collections which are divided in to four different roles. The hospital librarians had the users in mind when working with the collections. The users have different needs, not only because they are children and young people but also because they are patients. We could see that many different circumstances had an impact on the collection development, such as limited and narrow spaces, short treatment times for patients and low circulation on children and youth material. The three roles we could distinguish were the Dispensing role, the Advisory role and the Symbolic role. The librarians tried to have a diverse range of materials to satisfy the different needs. The librarians made certain collections visible by different headlines that would appeal to the users. We could see that materials with medical substance were prioritized in many ways. This material is important for both patients and the medical staff. Medical material also justified the patient hospital libraries existence in times when the medical libraries get more and more space. / Uppsatsnivå: D
