Media image of group De oberoende (twelve Swedish publishing houses). : The analysis of communication between jouralists from Dagens Nyheter, Svensk bokhandel and the group De oberoende.Pasierska, Natalia January 2011 (has links)

<p>The aim of this essay is to examine the attitudes towards publication of short stories, carried by the employees of Bokförlaget Forum, a randomly chosen Swedish publishing house. The study seeks to investigate the causes behind and consequences of the attitudes, as well as their generality. Through qualitative interviews, carried out with five of the company’s employees, the short story is defined as a problematic genre, mainly due to its low commercial success. The conclusions drawn from the interviews are put into a historical perspective, where the developments of the short story-genre, as well as that of the modern Swedish book market, are discussed. By putting Forum into the context of Pierre Bourdieu’s theories about cultural fields, the company’s behaviour in connection to the short story is further analyzed. The main finding of the study is that the Swedish short story of today is viewed as a difficult, high qualitative literary genre. A commercial publishing house like Forum therefore has an impossible task when trying to win success by launching short stories. Due to the genre’s low expected gains the publishers of Forum only accept short story manuscripts with an extremely high literary quality, and thus reinforces the role of the short story as a “difficult” genre. The study defines this profile as the consequence of a combination of increased commercialism and dislocation of power in the book market, altered publishing conditions for short stories, and an experimental literary label that clings on.</p>

Science fiction och fantasy : en undersökning av svenska bokförlags utgivning och fyra folkbiblioteks inköp under perioden 1989 till 1994 / Science fiction and fantasy : an examination of Swedish publishers publication and four public libraries´ acquisitions during the timeperiod 1989 to 1994Nilsson, Erik January 1996 (has links)
Publication of science fiction has a tradition in Sweden. Adult-fantasy does not. In recentyears, the 1980's, Swedish publishers have realised how profitable fantasy is. Of the totalpublication of the two genres between 1989 and 1994, 54% was science fiction and 46%was fantasy. The reason for this even balance is that fantasy-books get reprinted more frequentlythan science fiction-books. However, there are more science fiction-titles published thanfantasy-titles.The four public libraries that I have examined have similar methods of acquiring books. Theyhave all, just about, acquired the same titles of fantasy while the science fiction acquired differsto a large degree. The four libraries • acquisitions are similar to those of the libraries connectedto Bibliotekstjänst's database BURK. The differences between the four libraries lie in thenumber of science fiction and fantasy-books and the distribution of different languages thebooks were originally published in.

En studie om små förlags uppkomst och utveckling år 2002-2015 / A study of small publishers beginning and development year 2002-2015Åkesson, Pernilla January 2015 (has links)
The essay is about small publishing houses and their position onthe Swedish book market 2002-2015. Focus is on the Internetand digitization, and the study would examine what commonconditions that exist for publishers to start publishing, as well asthe forces that affect the development of the Publishingbusiness. As the theory used Chris Anderson's long tail, whichsays that products from the narrow niches can compete with thebig sellers on the same terms. Through qualitative interviewswith publishers and a representative from Noff study shows thatsmall publishers in part, has been formed because it is cheaperand easier to print now. The study also shows that the Internethad great importance for publishers developing for example, facilitated the distribution, marketing, availability and sales. With the help of the long tail theory three forces such as thedemocratization of production tools, the democratization ofdistribution and good filter, the study shows that there is amarket for narrow and niche literature, which small publisherscan meet. Finally, it appears that publishers should be driven andhave a genuine interest in the literary publishing housepublishes.

Girls Can’t Play Football, Can They? : A comparative study on norms, gender and ethnicity in children's literature published by two different publishers.Andgrim, Kajsa, Nevalainen, Emma January 2019 (has links)

Publishing Fiction Electronically : A Qualitative Study Based on Interviews with Nine Swedish Publishers and Four Other Agents in the Literary FieldSmith, Camilla, Zachrisson, Annika January 2000 (has links)
The main objective of this essay is to present the views of nine Swedish publishers and four other agents in the literary field regarding the possibilities of and obstacles to publishing fiction in an electronic format. Furthermore, whether or not electronic publishing is today actually a viable alternative. A substantial part of the essay functions as background to our interview findings and is based primarily on material originating from the Sociology of Literature field. The introductory chapter expounds the methodological and theoretical basis of the essay and is followed by a chapter placing our study in a larger, international media, context. Chapter three deals with the past decades’ restructuring of the publishing sector, the professional functions involved in traditional publishing and Pierre Bourdieu’s theories on the cultural and economic forces at work in the literary field. The fourth and fifth chapters present the many roles of the traditional printed book, as well as new media for the distribution and consumption of literature, and looks at the kind of partnerships evolving between agents in e-publishing. The main emphasis is, however, placed on the following sections: Chapter six, which exemplifies a few of the existing national and international web publishers; and chapter seven, which presents our examination based on qualitative interviews with publishers and other agents connected with the Swedish book industry. The essay finishes with a discussion of our findings and concludes that, despite new media and textual carriers, the traditional book remains the main player regarding the production, distribution and consumption of serious fiction, as far as the traditional Swedish publishers are concerned.

”Every book shall be a paving-stone” : A study of ideological publishing houses in the Swedish literary fieldLarsdotter, Ylva, Larsson, Fia January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine a selection of ideological publishing houses in Sweden today. We want to examine where they are situated in the literary society, their terms and prerequisites. This is achieved through interviews with informants from each of the publishing houses, which we analyze with concepts from the culture sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. The publishing houses are also put in context through information from other actors in the literary field, together with previous research and other material about the Swedish book market. The main research problem in the thesis is to examine the relations between the selected publishing houses – which profile themselves as ideological – and the literary field where they exist. The theoretical framework consists of Bourdieu’s theories on the literary field. One of the main conflicts in the field is that between the cultural and the economical pole, both aspects that must be considered by the publisher. The increased market adaptation in the book business can lead to standardized publications and difficult conditions for smaller actors. The results show that independent publishing houses are an important complement to the larger publishing houses as they serve as a guarantee for variety within the field. Furthermore, the examined publishing houses function as a meeting place for readers, authors and other literary collaborators with the correct kind of symbolic capital. The publishing houses create alternative ways of book-selling and distribution. They also co-operate with agents/actors with a similar position in the field, to reach out with their publishing and ideology.

The information behavior of nonfiction publishing Company editorsSandquist, Carina January 2010 (has links)
The main purpose of this work was to examine the information behavior of nonfiction publishing Company editors. Three problem areas were presented and expressed in the following questions:- What is the information need of the editor in every day work?- Which sources of information do the editors use when they are looking for information and how do they make use of them?- Are there any factors that have an influence on the information behavior of the editors and in what way do the factors effect the information behavior of the editors in their everyday work? And finally, do the editors experience any factors as barriers to information behavior?Six editors, all with academical background, all employed in different publishing companies were interviewed. The result of this study have been analysed within a theoretical framework influenced by the work of Tom Wilson, Lars Höglund and Olle Persson and Block and Lagberg. The result shows that the editors had various regular needs of information in their every day work. They needed new information to get a grip on the market and competitors. Furthermore they needed inspiration and feed-back. They also needed information to confirm and explain tasks in manuscripts. It was important for the editors to have quick access to reliable information sources. Therefore the use of oral information from colleagues both face-to-face through interpersonal communication and through the Internet was frequently used. Internet was a very important tool for their information seeking and collection of information. The private collection of books of the editors was important. I found that non-word oriented sources such as pictures and the daily use of books influenced their information behavior. The editors often browsed information haphazardly, which generated finding information by serendipity, information to use in their work. Factors influencing the information behaviour of editors were the organisation, work tasks, geographical environment and personal interests and preferences. Barriers to information were also found.
