Allegories of commemoration

Bonnemaison, Sarah 11 1900 (has links)
In analyzing the 1989 bicentennial in Paris, my point of departure has been that the French government, faced with the cool reception to the memory of the Revolution of 1789, was trying to make revolutionary heritage relevant to contemporary concerns, by using allegorical techniques of spatializing and visualizing history while consequently (yet paradoxically, since it ran against their intentions) effecting a smooth passage for this heritage into the world of commodity and spectacle. To analyze this dilemma, I investigated the mechanisms of representation and the tension between spectacle and politically engaged imagery. Drawing from the work of Water Benjamin, the thesis proposed to use allegory as a mode of political criticism and redemptive interpretation. The analysis of the programming of events, for example, revealed that it contained a moral tale of sacrifice, and praised the power of the memory of the Revolution to form a community, not based on ethnicity or shared history but on shared ideals. The analysis of the use of collage in the Bastille Day Parade revealed that it reworked Republican notions of ‘fraternity in a post-colonial era to reflect contemporary discussions of métissage and take a position on its relationship to democracy. By looking at this commemoration allegorically, the double meanings inscribed in the bicentennial program, exhibits, monuments and parade can be unpacked. But the allegorical critique is violent, it does not carefully excavate layers of meaning through a gentle and constructive hermeneutic circle, it requires that the objects that are being contemplated be in fragments. As the allegorist reassembles the fragments into new meaningful constellations, the constructions remain open, driven by the impossibility of recovering what has been lost, always pointing to the instability of meaning. The analysis of the commemoration recognized that commodification and spectacularisation happen, but through reversal it also showed that the 1989 bicentennial draws from a constantly evolving relationship to memory which allows for investment on the part of the public. Because the commemoration is a powerful form of visualizing and spatializing history that occurs in public spaces, many provocative images were taken up by the press and written about, which ultimately reconfigured present-day discussions about democracy and citizenship.

Salvador

IDENTIDADE EM PERFORMANCE: UM ESTUDO ETNOGRÁFICO SOBRE AS FESTAS DE CAPELA NO BERÇO DA QUARTA COLÔNIA DE IMIGRAÇÃO ITALIANA/RS / IDENTITY IN PERFORMANCE: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY ABOUT CELEBRATIONS OF CHAPEL IN THE CRADLE OF THE FOURTH COLONY OF ITALIAN IMIGRATION/RS

Chiamulera, Márcia 08 February 2010 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis addresses the composition of the indentities through the performances produced in the celebrations of chapel in the town of Silveira Martins, located into the Fourth Colony of Italian Imigration in the Rio Grande do Sul. Celebration of chapel is an expression that denote into the own group events that happen in communities from the rural zone, place that have just a space like a little church and a hall, these events happen to honor the patron saint from this comunity. Spaces like these became privilege for the research becouse of limitation of his territory made by italians immigrants during the XIX century, combined to the growth of the memories to rebuild a colonial past and based in a mythical origin. The quest of this work is to map the celebrations of chapel and then take for the analysis five of them, also other two festive events, with the intention to make a local festive table contemplating the daily dimension. Is understood that a festive moment, that symbolize and enlarge the elements of the daily, become a product of it. The fundamentations for this research is based on the discussions about the identity, using mainly concepts about the ethnic and cultural identity contemplating studies about the identity quest front the globalization process. The analysis table is compost for the ethnographic method, as well as, analysis of the performances, mainly corporal, understood as expressive and communicative acts. Although records were used audiovisual bolstered the descriptions and analysis of aspects observed in the field. Thus, it is found that the festivals of Chapel have a multitude of related identity, such as customs, traditions, beliefs, values, habits, modes of knowledge and practices that make up the sense of identity among the group and allow to identify it as belonging to an ethnic identity. These related identity could be observed in the performances of individuals who produce the festival and among its participants. It s possible to say that te celebrations of chapel trigger strategically and resignify belonging to the italian ethnic indentity, highlighting the festival itself as a cultural performance. However, this membership iss seen as contrastive.

Eller? : En studie om hur förskollärares tankar och reflektioner går kring arbetet med högtider och traditioner i förskolan / Santa will be here soon...! Right? : A study of preschool pedagogues' thoughts and reflections about the work of festivals and traditions in a preschool context

Arian, Ann, Nilsson, Anna January 2017 (has links)
In this study, we explore six preschool pedagogues’ experiences regarding the celebrations of cultural and religious festivals and traditions, and how this is noted in their respective preschool settings. The purpose of this critical study is to make educators aware of how children’s ethnic and cultural diversity is reflected in the preschool’s attention or lack of attention to different festivals and traditions. The study is based on interviews conducted with six randomly selected preschool pedagogues from six different preschools from different parts of Sweden. Three of the preschool peda-gogues interviewed worked at “monocultural” preschools while the other three worked at what they considered as “multicultural” preschools. The results of the study are, that regardless of how the composition of the children’s group appeared, the preschool pedagogues’ reflections on their own situated experiences reveal the extent to which the festivals and traditions cele-brated are so-called Swedish and Christian. The festivals and traditions celebrated are e.g. Easter, Midsummer, Lucia and Christmas. Celebrations and traditions of a decent other than Swedish are not recognized in the same way. Theoretically, this study is based on Sara Ahmed’s ideas surrounding ‘the hegemony of white-ness’ and the ‘phenomenology of whiteness’. For us, this important critical and theoretical re-source opens for future questions about how well established the white hegemony is in our Swedish preschool.

Pražská korunovace krále Matyáše 23. května 1611 ve světle dobových pramenů / Prague coronation of king Matthias on 23rd may 1611 in the light of contemporary documents

Pařízková, Kateřina January 2012 (has links)
To the coronations which took place in Pre-White time, not enough attention has been paid yet. As it appears, enough accounts were preserved not only in contemporary prints but also in manuscript sources - in the works of chroniclers, in memories of persons present and above all in official and private correspondence. In addition to writen sources also material sorces and great part of iconographic sources have been preserved. The elaboration and evaluation of the sources to one of them, to the coronation of Matthias of Habsburg in Prague on May 23rd 1611, is a subject of the first half of this thesis. The coronation in the life of souvereign is a ceremony that generally certificates his leading position in the country. This ceremony customary is executed in accordance to the prede- terminated order. In case of the lands of Bohemian crown binding form has been set by coronation order of Bohemian kings Ordo ad coronandum Regem Bohemorum, prepared by Charles IV. The main core of this order was maintained also by Matthias coronation. His coronation in the cathedrale of Saint Vitus was a festive ceremony strongly influenced by then political situation. It placed under the strong protection of troops, excluding the general public, mostly ordinary people. Despite of it the ceromony was performed with...

\'A fundação do Acre\': um estudo sobre comemorações cívicas e abusos da história / \'The foundation do Acre\': a study in civic celebrations and abuses of history

Carneiro, Eduardo de Araújo 20 October 2014 (has links)
The present dissertation analyses the political and symbolical role of civic commemorations and celebration dates related to the annexation of Acre to Brazil as well as the historical truth of the celebrated events. The mobilization of epic narratives in civic celebrations is very common in the Western World, from the antiquity to the present. In this way, the civic commemorations in Acre were studied as part of that millenary tradition. The re-reading of Acres historical formation was pursued from the perspective of Acres situation in the Amazonia region and its insertion within the capitalist world economy. Information about Acre were found in newspapers, documents and books located at the collections of the National Library (Biblioteca Nacional - RJ), Rubber Museum (Museu da Borracha - AC), e Department of Historical Heritage of Acre (Departamento de Patrimônio Histórico do Acre DPHAC). The Florestan Fernandes Library (FFLCH/USP) offered bibliographical resources to support the theoretical approach of this dissertation .This research exemplify an emphasis on the qualitative method. A partial conclusion lead by this work is that civic celebrations in Acre had fulfilled the same political role as it does in the Western World forging identities and social cohesion, promoting chauvinism, spreading values and traditions to validate the present. Following an anti-commemoration historiographical contemporary tendency, this dissertation also concludes that the epic narrative presented by the supporters of the civic commemorations can be considered dishonest, abusive and irresponsible. That is because it reproduces a representation of the past not according the reality of the historical facts, and because it has always been committed with the persistence of Acrean status quo
