Kärnfamiljens uppbrott och dess effekter : En intervjustudie om socionomstudenters upplevelser som skilsmässobarn samt reflektioner kring dess inverkan på utbildningsval och yrkesroll

Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka hur socionomstudenter under uppväxten påverkades av föräldrarnas separation och följande förändringar såsom nya familjekonstellationer samt hur dessa erfarenheter kan kopplas till utbildningsval och framtida socionomroll. Studiens data består av fyra semistrukturerade intervjuer med socionomstudenter som går sin sjätte termin på Södertörns Högskola. En av informanterna hade dock inte upplevt någon ny familjekonstellation efter föräldrarnas separation. Den valda analysmetoden för denna studie utgår från en övergriplig kvalitativ metod som består av att koda, tematisera och summera. Tillsammans med den valda analysmetoden analyserades resultatet utifrån tidigare forskning och teoretiska perspektiv såsom coping, systemteori och wounded healer. Studiens resultat visar att majoriteten av informanterna hade det svårt hemma innan skilsmässan på grund av föräldrakonflikter. Resultatet presenterar även skilda upplevelser av att leva i en ny familjekonstellation då både positiva och negativa upplevelser uppmärksammats. Även belystes positiva och negativa aspekter av olika boendeformer, förändringar i relation till föräldrar samt skillnader i känslor och hantering. Gemensamt för informanterna är att föräldrarnas skilsmässa inte haft en direkt påverkan på utbildningsval men att de kan se fördelar med att ha upplevt en föräldraseparation för deras framtida yrkesroll och deras förståelse för klienter. / The purpose of this study was to explore how social work students were impacted by their parents' divorce and the changes that followed, as well as how these experiences can be linked to the choice of education and their future profession. The empirical data consists of semi-structured interviews with students at Södertörn University studying their sixth semester to receive a bachelor's degree in social work. The four informants, except one, all experienced new family structures post-divorce. The chosen analysis method is the constant comparative method consisting of coding, thematization and summarizing. The analysis also includes previous research and theoretical perspectives such as coping, systems theory and wounded healer. The results showed that three of the informants experienced parental conflict prior to parental separation. The results also presented differences regarding experiences of new family structures due to both positive and negative aspects being mentioned. Contrasts within the results also displayed in changes in the parent-child relationship, emotions and coping as well as living arrangements. All informants stated that the parental divorce did not have a direct impact on the choice of education and occupation, however they could all acknowledge it resulting in increased understanding and compassion for future clients.

Making the Decision: Factors that Affect the Information Available to Parents with Young Children about Charter Schools in Central Florida

In the opening decades of the 21st Century, a movement towards parental choice in public schools has taken flight. One of the choices becoming more readily available to parents of young children is charter schools. Charter schools are expanding across the United States and Central Florida is representative of this growth. Parents are faced with more choices as they make decisions on their children's educational future than ever before making the availability of quality, accurate information about local schools paramount. While scholarly work on charter schools, the effects of media coverage on public opinion, and how parents make choices for their children exists, in many cases the research offers inconclusive results and rarely was there an attempt to connect all three. This paper, written from a parent's perspective, analyzes research, newspaper articles, interviews, and surveys of Central Florida's media outlets, public school representatives, and parents of young children to determine the types of information on charter schools available to parents of young children in Central Florida. The purpose of this thesis will be to investigate the information available to parents when considering a charter school for their young children by comparing the stated opinions of the local media, district school boards, and the charters themselves. It also identifies who is responsible for disseminating this information, and how the parents choose to gather and use this information.

Hur känd är Sjöfartshögskolan och dess sjöbefälsutbildningar hos gymnasieelever i Kalmar? : En studie i Sjöfartshögskolan synlighet.

Sjöfartshögskolan har under de senaste åren haft en trend av minskade antal ansökningar till sina sjöbefälsutbildningar. Detta har gjort att skolan inte kunnat fylla alla platser. Syftet med examensarbetet var att få en uppfattning om gymnasieelever i Kalmar känner till Sjöfartshögskolan i Kalmar och dess sjöbefälsutbildningar. Detta gjordes via en enkätundersökning och de svarande klasserna var avgränsade till avgångsklasser i de högskoleförberedande programmen som finns i Kalmar tätort. Resultaten visade att kunskapen om Sjöfartshögskolan utbildningar är låg. De har i många fall inte sett till skolan i samband med sitt val och de vet inte heller vilka utbildningar Sjöfartshögskolan har att erbjuda. Slutsatsen är att det kan vara marknadsföringen som brister och måste förändras om trenden ska vända. / Kalmar Maritime Academy have experienced a trend of falling number of applications to their Officer programmes during the last years. This fact have made the Academy unable to fill all seats with enrolled students. The purpose of the thesis was to get an understanding of how well the High School students in Kalmar knew the Maritime Academy and its Officer Programmes. This was made by a questionnaire and the answering classes were limited to those in their graduating year in one of the six university preparatory progammes and attending a High School in the City of Kalmar. The results showed that knowledge about the Academy’s programmes is low. The students have, in many cases, not seen the Academy in relation to their University choices and they also do not know what programmes and courses the Maritime Academy has to offer. The conclusion is it could be marketing that is failing and needs to be changed if the trend is to be turned around.

The multi-year gymnasium is a part of the Czech educational system for the long time. Those gymnasiums are one of the most discussed institutions in terms of usefulness. Various studies are made in dependence on that trying to find reasons for choosing multi-year gymnasiums (as thesis "Why Do Primary School Children Choose Multi-year Gymnasiums?", which preceded this work). The aim of this diploma thesis is already the next step: figuring out, if gymnasium met pupils' expectations, and also to receive feedback and evaluation of their parents. It focuses on pupils' academic self-concept, on problems associated with transfer to multi-year gymnasium and on positives, which the pupils would not probably meet at elementary school with. Beslutsgrund : en studie av utbildningsval bland kvinnliga elever på gymnasieskolans Naturvetenskaps- och Teknikprogram / Reasons for Decision : A study of educational choice among female students at the Swedish gymnasium programs in Science and in Technology

Ingenjörsutbildningar i Sverige har på ungefär hundra år gått från att enbart ta in män till en andel av 36 procent kvinnliga studenter. Även om en jämställd könsfördelning går framåt är andelen kvinnor på vissa program så låg som 16 procent. Den största rekryteringsbasen till ingenjörsutbildningar är gymnasieskolans Naturvetenskapsprogram (NV) och Teknik-program (TE). Grundad teori (GT) användes som metodansats när kvinnliga elever på NV och TE intervjuades för att undersöka vad de upptas av när de står inför sina studieval. Ett brett spektrum av anledningar som kan sammanfattas i kärnkategorin Beslutsgrund visade att eleverna vägde in bland annat arbetsmarknad, behörighet till universitet och högskola, en utbildnings rankning, förväntad social tillhörighet, den upplevda självförmågan, sina betyg, ett undvikande av ett skolämne de inte gillade, om en utbildning leder till den karriär de vill ha, arbetsbelastning samt arbetsbelastning i relation till behörighet. Studien visade också att metodansatsen GT kan användas i ett examensarbete och att det finns utmaningar och möjligheter med denna kombination. / Education in engineering sciences in Sweden have for the past hundred years gone from solely recruiting men to a 36 percentage of female students. Even though the number of women is progressing in some fields, other fields still have as low proportion as 16 percent. The largest base for recruiting engineering students is the Swedish gymnasium programs in Sciences (NV) and in Technology (TE). The research method grounded theory (GT) was used when female students in NV and TE were interviewed to investigate the main concern of these students making choices about present and future studies. A broad spectrum of reasons, summarized in the core category Reasons for Decision (Beslutsgrund), showed that the students took into consideration the labour market, eligibility to university, the ranking of an education, expectations for social belonging, self-efficacy, grades, avoidance of a school subject, if the education led to the desired career, work load and work load in relation to eligibility. The execution of GT showed that this method could be used within the frame of a master thesis and that there are challenges and advantages in the combination.

Abstract   The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to shed light on, explain, and problematize women’s and men’s paths both to and within the profession of engineer. Computer and mechanical engineers are in focus and the overarching issues that this thesis attempts to answer are: How can women’s and men’s paths to the profession of engineer be explained and what has governed/motivated their choice of education? How do women’s and men’s career patterns look in professional life, and how can these patterns be explained?   This study is based on a social-constructivistic approach, entailing a focus on how choices of education and profession have been negotiated through social and cultural practices, norms, and values. The thesis combines work science research with research into the gender and technology fields. In particular, the relationships between gender, technology, and labour market gender segregation are of key importance in this thesis. The four part studies of the thesis are based on three qualitative studies and on one quantitative study. The qualitative studies consist of interview surveys with a total of 24 computer and mechanical engineers and 22 IT consultants. The quantitative survey is an exhaustive survey of 3,662 working IT engineers.   My studies show that the career patterns of women and men in the profession of engineer differ. Men’s paths both to and within the profession tend to be “straight” while women’s are often “winding”. The thesis shows that historically established, often stereotypical, conceptions of gender contribute towards recreating these different paths for women and men. At the same time, tendencies towards change are indicated. This is made visible through a gradually changing view of both father- and parenthood, which in and of itself is creating new prerequisites for women and men in working life. In concluding, the thesis proposes a new term, technology career, as an analytical tool for continued studies of gender segregation in technology and engineering professions. The aim in using this term is to capture the social complexity and cultural dynamic as regards how technology and gender are co-produced. / ”Jag har ju en yngre bror som har stöttat mig i det här. Denna avhandling tar sig an den könssegregering i ingenjörsutbildningar och i ingenjörsyrket som Kristinas berättelse återspeglar. I fokus står data- och maskingenjörer. Detta är två av de mest könssegregerade ingenjörsgrenarna, och betraktas ofta som ”mansyrken”. Genom såväl kvalitativa intervjuer med ingenjörer och en kvantitativ totalundersökning av över 3000 ingenjörers karriärmönster, undersöker avhandlingen vilka tecken på förändring som syns i ingenjörsyrkets könssegregering. Vilka är hindren för kvinnor att ta plats inom yrket, och vilka möjligheter finns?   Line Holth är forskare i arbetsvetenskap och verksam vid Handelshögskolan och Centrum för genusforskning vid Karlstads universitet.
