Peer Review in the Contemporary Corporation

My dissertation explores the history, pedagogy, and practice of peer review in academia and in the workplace, so that I could suggest strategies for improving peer review in the contemporary corporation. Several scholars have studied collaborative writing—of which peer review is just one type—but few have specifically and thoroughly treated the subject of peer review. I surveyed the technical writers in my organization as well as other local writers about their thoughts on peer review. For improving peer review in the workplace, two predominant themes emerged: improve the corporate culture and assign a manager to the process. Therefore, I explore how to create a sense of community in the organization, and I propose a leader of the peer review process—the technical editor. My final chapter discusses the pedagogical implications of my study, and includes suggestions for preparing technical communication students (i.e., technicaleditors) for such a leadership role in the workplace.

<p>Vårt samhälle idag präglas av ett ökat flöde av varor, tjänster och information och avståndet till världen runt omkring oss krymper. För organisationer innebär detta att kravet på effektivitet har blivit ett faktum och i samband med information kan begreppet strategisk kommunikation vara nyckeln till framgång. Vi som studerar medie- och kommunikationsvetenskap funderar ofta på vilka krav och förväntningar kommande arbetsgivare har på oss kommunikatörer som snart ska ut på arbetsmarknaden. Vi har också funderat på vilka arbetsgivare som bäst kommer att kunna möta vår strävan efter intressanta och utvecklande arbetsuppgifter. I den diskussion som just nu pågår har vi uppmärksammat att många ser organisationer inom den privata sektorn som mer attraktiva än organisationer inom den offentliga. Denna förutfattade mening gjorde oss intresserade av att undersöka om det finns några skillnader av upplevd yrkesstatus mellan kommunikatörer anställda inom de olika sektorerna. Är det någon skillnad och i så fall vilka faktorer är det som påverkar och orsakar dessa skillnader?</p><p>För att vi skulle kunna belysa och diskutera frågan om det fanns någon skillnad av upplevd yrkesstatus hos kommunikatörer i privat respektive offentlig sektor, valde vi att studera tillfredsställelse och stolthet i yrkesrollen. Ett mål för studien var även att ge förslag på åtgärder som kunde höja kommunikatörers yrkesstatus oavsett vad den är idag. Vi utgick från en kvalitativ ansats och genomförde åtta intervjuer med yrkesverksamma kommunikatörer inom de båda sektorerna.</p><p>Resultatet av studien visar att samtliga intervjupersoner upplever tillfredsställelse och stolthet i yrkesrollen men att faktorerna som påverkar denna upplevelse skiljer sig åt mellan de båda sektorerna. Inom den privata sektorn tenderar intervjupersonerna att sträva efter yttre bekräftelse medan intervjupersonerna inom den offentliga sektorn tenderar att sträva efter inre bekräftelse. I resultatet kan vi även skönja en förändring i klimatet inom den privata sektorn. Den tidigare så goda tillgången på resurser har minskat och har fått konsekvenser för intervjupersonerna. Kravet på lönsamhet gör att några organisationer inom denna sektor har koncentrerat och flyttat sina kommunikationsenheter till storstäder. Därmed har möjligheterna till personlig utveckling och till avancemang inom organisationen begränsats. En tolkning som vi gör utifrån diskussionen kring centralisering är även att den externa kommunikationen har prioriterats på bekostnad av den interna. För den som är intresserad ser vi här en möjlighet att bygga vidare på vår studie genom att undersöka hur kommunikatörens yrkesstatus har förändrats i organisationer som har centraliserat sina kommunikationsverksamheter.</p> / <p>Today’s communities are characterized by a torrent of goods, services and information and the world around us is getting smaller. That leaves consequences for organisations by demands on effectiveness and the concept strategic communication may be the key to success. We who are studying media and communication are often thinking about which demands and expectations our future employers have on us as communicators. Other thoughts we have around this are which employees that best can meet our endeavor after interesting and developing working tasks. We have noticed that the discussion about employees among students often includes that it is more interesting to work in the private sector than in the public sector. The discussion made us more curious about how the communicators working in respective sectors experienced their own professional status. We wondered if there was any differences, and if, which factors the possible differences was affected and caused by?</p><p>To be able to discuss and illustrate the question about differences in experienced professional status between communicators working in the public or private sector, we chose too study satisfaction and pride in the professional role. One further goal was to give proposals on measures that could raise communicator’s professional status irrespective of what it is today. We had a qualitative approach and we interviewed four professional communicators in each sector.</p><p>The result from our study shows that all of the interview persons experience satisfaction and pride in their professional role but the factors that affects the experience is different between the two sectors. The interviewed persons working in the private sector tend to strive against outer confirmation and the interviewed persons in the public sector tend instead to strive against inner confirmation. We can also discern a change in climate in the private sector. The organisations in the private sector are concentrating their communication units to big cities as a result of high demands on profitability. With that has the opportunities of individual development and the chance to advance within the organization been restricted. Our interpretations about concentrating the communication units to bigger cities are that we believe that the external communication will be prioritized on the expense of the internal communication. For those who are interested we here see an opportunity of further studies about the professional role and status of communicators that works in organisations that has concentrated their communications units and see if a difference can be seen.</p>

The rationale that effective internal communication plays a crucial role in aligning employees to organisational goals, and in so doing, inculcate employee engagement and help an organisation to succeed, is remodelling internal communication management within organisations. At the core of the preceding rationale lies the fundamental realisation and acknowledgement that effective internal communication is not the function of the communication department, but in effect a basic prerequisite that must be understood, embraced and practiced by all levels of management. Managers without effective internal communication and employee engagement cannot execute the responsibility of strategic alignment. The challenge is now to ensure that the internal communication process is approached as a properly structured and efficiently managed system, rather than a collection of fragmented messages that often cause confusion among employees and compel disengagement. This study explores to what extent the senior managers at the North-West University understand their fundamental role in facilitating effective internal communication and employee engagement. An extensive literature study revealed that there is a correlation between effective internal communication and understanding of organisational strategy and objectives among employees. In addition, a strong correlation between effective internal communication, employee engagement, employee performance and organisational profitability has been identified in literature. The empirical findings were obtained by means of a qualitative research method in the form of semi-structured interviews with senior and middle managers. The semi-structured interviews explored and described how the managers perceive the nature of their role in facilitating and sustaining effective internal communication and employee engagement. In comparing the actual role of senior managers at the University in internal communication and employee engagement with the ideal state related to D'Aprix's (1996) manager's communication model, as well as the principles of a convergence model of communication, information richness of communication channels, a leadership communication framework and the impact of highest scoring manager activities and attributes, it was concluded that this communication role is still misunderstood by senior managers and not properly structured and executed. Consequently, internal communication is not adequately fulfilling its strategic potential as a means to establish positive relationships, diffuse information, motivate, and align employees' actions and behaviour to the set goals of the University. It is suggested that future studies measure and determine whether the engagement levels of employees at the North-West University have increased as a result of managers fulfilling their internal communication role effectively. Another study could also assess and measure the effectiveness of internal communication channels, with the view to develop an internal communication channel guide or toolkit for managers at the North-West University. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to examine if one can find a change within the genre job advertisements for communicators, and in extension, the profession as a whole, during the time period 1997-2017. By studying the schematic structures of job advertisements as a genre text at large, and specifically the rhetoric strategies used when presenting requirements, I will be attempting to answer these questions through a genre analysis. The material consists of 24 job advertisements in total, 8 from each year of 1997, 2007 and 2017. The texts from 1997 have been acquired by searching through the job section of the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter, from issues published from October to December 1997. However, the material from 2007 and 2017 both come from the Swedish Public Employment Service, Arbetsförmedlingen. To find texts from 2007 the archive at the Swedish Public Employment Service had to be advised, seeing as they are no longer posted on their website. All the job advertisements from 2017 however have been found and downloaded from the website.                       Theoretically this study mainly lies on Vijay K Bhatias genre analysis, and his methodology when analyzing genres and their communicative purpose as well as their schematic structure. The analysis goes on to analyze the rhetoric strategies used within the job advertisements requirements-section, then using systemic-functional grammar (SFG) to make clear the linguistic configuration. The results of the analysis show that both change and stability within the genre can be found. Regarding the changes, the schematic structures, in regards to content, becomes larger. Both regarding the number of moves in total and the number of different moves used. In addition, the analysis tells us that the ideal applicant in 2017 is an independent communicator who has a talent for networking and connecting with new people, in contrast to the communicator in 1997, who primarily is a good writer with an ability to work together.

El presente trabajo analiza el rol del aprendizaje informal en nuestro país, usando el caso específico de los comunicadores audiovisuales orientados al área de postproducción en el Perú. Asimismo, se identifica cuáles son las herramientas más utilizadas por los alumnos, cuál es el objetivo del aprendizaje formal y si se cumplen de manera satisfactoria en la educación. Finalmente se establece una diferenciación entre los temas revisados tanto en estructuras formales e informales, y cuál es el nivel de control que ejercen los estudiantes. / This paper analyzes the role of informal learning in our country, using the specific case of audiovisual communicators oriented to the post-production area in Peru. Likewise, the tools most used by students are identified, what is the objective of formal learning and if they are satisfactorily fulfilled in education. The aim of this study is to examine the Swedish social orientation law. The question that we seek to answer is “how the social communicators interpret the social orientation law?” The findings in this study are based on a qualitative method of semi-structured interviews and the study participants are six social communicators from six different municipalities. The data that we gathered was analyzed by Jurgen Habermas perspective of lifeworld and system. The main findings show that the nonspecific character of the social orientation law made the social communicator’s interpretation of the law highly subjective. With the use of Habermas, we interpreted this as a colonization of the system made by the lifeworld. Other findings show that the social communicators felt that they had too much of a scope in the shaping of the social orientation law and that they in many cases used their own past experiences as immigrants as a tool when teaching. At the same time, they felt that the role as a social communicator was not well defined and because of this they were not sure of what their work duties were. We hope that the findings in this study show that the lax approach that the Swedish government has had with the integration policy, may need some changes in the form of stronger directives.

This report studies the possibility of integrating Transport Management Services (TMS) in a low-cost platform called Communicator 200 (C200). The platform is developed by Scania and is a black box that manages vehicle data, positioning, and wireless communication. The C200’s main purpose is to connect a hauler’s vehicles to their office system via wireless links and Internet. The thesis describes the design and implements a prototype of a service called Messaging that is used to send text messages between truck and office. The prototype is evaluated and tested with different web browsers in various hand-held terminals with different screen sizes. The main conclusion is that it is technically possible to integrate TMS in the C200 without altering the platform architecture too much. / Denna rapport undersöker möjligheten att integrera transportledningstjänster i en billig platform kallad Communicator 200 (C200). Platformen är utvecklad av Scania och är en svart låda som hanterar fordonsdata, positionering och trådlös kommunikation. C200 huvudsyfte är att sammankoppla ett åkeris fordon med deras kontorssystem via trådlösa förbindelser och Internet. Rapporten beskriver designen och implementerar en prototyp av en tjänst kallad Messaging som används för att skicka textmeddelanden mellan lastbil och kontor. Prototypen utvärderas och testas mot webbläsare i olika handhållna terminaler med olika skärmstorlekar. Huvudslutsatsen är att det är möjligt att integrera transportledningstjänster i C200 utan att ändra plattformens arkitektur alltför mycket.
