Comunidades: redutos de identidades culturais narrativas e práticas afirmativas / Comunities: place of cultural identities narratives and practical affirmations

Sônia Lúcia Bahia Ferreira 19 November 2009 (has links)
Identidade, memória e gênero nas obras literárias de Orlanda Amarílis e Clarice Lispector / Identity, memory and genre in Orlanda Amarilis and Calrice Lispector literary books

Suely Alves de Carlos 10 November 2009 (has links)
This dissertation is inserted in the Comparative Studies of Portuguese Language Literature area, and it has as objective to establish an analogy between the narratives of two writers who lived a diaspora. To do so, we will examine Desencanto e Cais-do- Sodré, from the title Cais-d -Sodré te Salamansa[1], and Thonon-les-Bains, from the title Ilhéu dos Pássaros[2], both by Orlanda Amarilis, and A Hora da Estrela[3], by Clarice Lispector. Starting from this literary titles, we intend to show how migrant womens reality find common issues even between such distant countries as Brazil and Cape Verde, and, still, always under gender view, the multiple identities established when someone is under a diaspora situation. From each Orlanda Amarilis tale only one thematic group (diaspora and cultural identity, diaspora memory and gender, respectively) will be highlighted, and worked comparatively to Clarisse Lispectors narrative, A Hora da Estrela, to avoid, in this manner, redundancy or themes repetition.

Escritas da memória: autoria e identidade cultural / Written memory: authorship and cultural identity

Francesco Antonio Capo 17 November 2016 (has links)
A teacher in Youth and Adult Education major problem is dealing with the multiplicity of knowledge and multiple ways of apprehending reality: students come to school with various levels of literacy and knowledge forged by other cognitive systems and ways of understanding the world. Thus, this research aimed at studying the relationship between literacy, written memory and cultural identity. The main objective was to determine to what extent pedagogical practices with written memory contribute to literacy of adults that came from oral culture or had little contact with the written word. We started from the assumption that the work with written memory propitiates the feeling of belonging and leads the students to build an image of themselves as a subject-author of their writing, understanding it as a significant social practice. Indeed, by remembering the past, we confront values, beliefs and feelings of this with values, beliefs and feelings of the present. Voices, images, sounds and smells; the past assaults us, and resignifies meanings long lost. Memory space is also the space of ressignification: the space where we construct and reconstruct representations and identities, according to the ways by which, as we becomea subject of memory, we \"anchor\" or we \"engage\" in one instead of another discourse, in one meaning instead of another. In other words, we build representations of the past according to the representations we make of the present, both contaminated by representations socially and historically constructed. There is a sort of bond or an intersection of representations, from which we forge an identity that is individual and collective at the same time. In this movement, we negotiate meanings and we insert ourselves into the set of configurations and reconfigurations of power relations that are embodied in and through discourse. The methodology of this research was divided into three stages: the application of didactic sequence addressing the genre \"autobiography\" and its specifics; data collection (texts written by students, monitoring reports of the teaching-learning process, socio-economic and cultural profile questionnaires); and last but not least, qualitative data analysis. We based this research upon the concepts autonomy (FREIRE, 2002), agency (BAZERMAN, 2006, 2011, 2015; KLEIMAN, 2006), authorship (POSSENTI, 2002; TFOUNI, 2005, 2010), ideological literacy (STREET, 2014) and collective memory (HALBWACHS, 1990; BOSI, 1979, 2003). We came to the conclusion that, by turning the written word into a way of reliving their experience through the memory discourse, students reframe literacy practice and reconceptualize it: the written word belongs to them and they are belongedby it.

Lived Experiences of Same Sex Attracted Men with Competing Spiritual and Sexual Identities

Hedge, Robert 01 January 2017 (has links)
This study focused on understanding the lived experiences of men from a conservative Christian background who had disidentified as gay and subordinated their sexual identity to their spiritual identity. The study was intended to create understanding of the social, cultural, and valuative frameworks that informed and guided their attempts at resolving the conflict between spiritual and sexual identity. The study included three research questions: What are the emergent core themes associated with competing spiritual and sexual identities? How has the response of their faith community affected their struggle? How has the response of the gay community affected their struggle? Through the lens of postmodern theory that identity formation is socially constructed, the qualitative collective case study inquiry included interviews with six participants. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews and photo-elicitation. The interviews were divided into personal experiences, church experiences, and application of experiences. Using analytic techniques of pattern matching and explanation building, four emergent themes were identified: conflict; importance of faith; feelings of being alone, fearful, and misunderstood; and God is forgiving and loving. The photo-elicitation consisted of six photos, and participants responded to each photo. The interview responses were coded separately from the photo-elicitation responses to better understand the participants' journey in experiencing identity conflict and to identify their current experience of the conflict. The social change implications include generating information aimed at reducing stigma and negative perceptions for those who experience competing identities and to minimize the marginalization of this group of people.

Ethnic and American Identity Development: A Developmental Systems Approach

Meca, Alan 05 March 2014 (has links)
Given the role ethnic identity has as a protective factor against the effects of marginalization and discrimination (Umaña-Taylor, 2011), research longitudinally examining ethnic identity has become of increased importance. However, successful identity development must incorporate elements from both one’s ethnic group and from the United States (Berry, 1980). Despite this, relatively few studies have jointly evaluated ethnic and American identity (Schwartz et al., 2012). The current dissertation, guided by three objectives, sought to address this and several other gaps in the literature. First, psychometric properties of the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM) and the American Identity Measure (AIM) were evaluated. Secondly, the dissertation examined growth trends in recently immigrated Hispanic adolescents’ and their caregivers’ ethnic and American identity. Lastly, the relationship between adolescents’ and caregivers’ ethnic and American identity was evaluated. The study used an archival sample consisting of 301 recently immigrated Hispanic families collected from Miami (N = 151) and Los Angeles (N = 150). Consistent with previous research, results in Study 1 indicated a two-factor model reliably provided better fit than a one-factor model and established longitudinal invariance for the MEIM and the AIM. Results from Study 2 found significant growth in adolescents’ American identity. While some differences were found across site and nationality, evidence suggested recently immigrated Hispanic adolescents were becoming more bicultural. Counterintuitively, results found a significant decline in caregivers’ ethnic identity which future studies should further examine. Finally, results from Study 3, found several significant positive relationships between adolescents’ and their caregivers’ ethnic and American identity. Findings provided preliminary evidence for the importance of examining identity development within a systemic lens. Despite several limitations, these three studies represented a step forward in addressing the current gaps in the cultural identity literature. Implications for future investigation are discussed.

Transforming space and significance - a study of the constitutional court of South Africa

Rigby, Ursula 14 October 2020 (has links)
This study examines the process of establishing and building the new South African Constitutional Court as the first intervention in the development of the Constitutional Hill precinct and as part of an endeavour aimed at creating a new national identity. The argument is reliant on the premise that an agency, in this case the judges of the constitutional court, actively seeking out means of transforming space and place and transferring significances in heritage resources, has contributed self-consciously in the process of social transformation. The study is intended to be descriptive of a social reality and explanatory of a special atypical case. Pierre Nora's seminal concept involving lieux de mémoire, their spatial and material potential, and the means by which lieux are formed and retained as lieux (memory objects/vessels/vestiges of heritage) has framed this study. The premise that space and place embodies and transmits concepts of cultural heritage has inspired ongoing and complimentary theories of the ways in which the built environment manifests narratives of power and the role of place in memory. Nora's lieux are social creations often involving built form and it is clear that historically significant built form can be used in social endeavors which contribute to the creation of a society's identity. Research and analysis of the Constitutional Court archive, selected published critique, examination of the artefact itself and by means of interviews with key professional individuals who participated in the programme of the building of the new Constitutional Court, all contribute to an exposure of the process of the endeavour of the judges of the Constitutional Court to establish a “lieux of cultural identity”.
