Movimentos e tensões: experiências de liberdade de afrodescendentes em São Paulo (1880-1900) / Mobility and tensions: freedom experiences of afrodecendents in São Paulo (1880-1900)Rego, Yarace Morena Boregas e 24 August 2018 (has links)
Freedom experiences and mobility of destitute and semi poor Afro-descendants in São Paulo (1880-1900: period immediately preceding the abolition through the initial postabolition period) were often viewed as acts of \"disorder\", \"disturbance\" and \"vagrancy\" by police authorities. These repressive forces were committed to the interests of local political and economic elites, both at the end of the Empire and at the beginning of the Republic of Brazil. While diving into the social tensions of the abolitionist period, we identified a context of social vulnerability and generalized violence towards Afro-descendants, specially to those individuals that sought to liberate themselves from slavery. However, while brushing history against the grain, we access a specific gaze interested in the internal meanings of these experiences. Actually, we verify black women and men of diverse regions bringing forth numerous mobilization strategies as well as survival tactics. The analyzed sources (police memorandums and urban surveillance reports) informs us about acts of resistance and affirmation of this population. Through multifaceted struggles and fierce negotiations for their rights they strained to build their citizenship autonomously, based on their own specific cultural standards. This included constant displacements, as well as the search for labor relations regulated by customary notions of reciprocity. Often, they did not work more than necessary for their subsistence either. Thus, this also expanded their possibilities of autonomy. These manifestations can be translated as a rejection of social control attempts that had the objective of restricting the experience of Afro-descendants, while seeking to turn them into merely passive individuals fit only to become cheap labor supply. Clearly, projects that sought to implement a notion of modernity oriented by racism and hygienist doctrines (hegemonic concepts in the scientific pantheon of that epoch) were forced to negotiate with supposed defiances such as \"vagrancy\" and / or \"loitering\" \"drunkenness\". The persecution of certain patterns of sociability and \"gatherings\" motivated by \"forbidden games,\" \"dances\" and/or \"batuques festive and/or religious practices are rubrics that testify to such dispute. Finally, we place our object in relation to the premises of the historical agency. More specifically, this study unfolds in the light of the historiographic debates about continuities in freedom experiences as a building block in the construction of a possible citizenship of the enslaved/ex-enslaved. We also refer to the theories about the structural implications that the presence of Central Africans imprinted on the Afro-American social and cultural formation in general, and the Brazilian southeast in particular.

Des transmissions à l'épreuve des situations migratoires : les conditions d'une émancipation individuelle par le loisir sportif des descendantes de migrants maghrébins en quartier populaire / Transmissions in immigrant populations : conditions for individual emancipation through recreational sports in the female descendants of North African immigrants in a disadvantaged neighborhoodTatu-Colasseau, Anne 10 December 2013 (has links)
The aim of our study was to identify the forms that individual emancipation takes for the women froma disadvantaged neighborhood in a French city who are involved in sports and are the descendants of NorthAfrican immigrants. We are well aware that a study of female emancipation within the context of Arab-Muslimimmigration could run the risk of being ethnocentrically biased. To avoid this, our first task involved adeconstruction of the dominant social categories, followed by a reconstruction of scientifically-based socialcategories in order to break out of both the current collective gender, cultural and social exclusion of thefemale descendants of North African immigrants and of the impasse presented by the dictate of "loyalty orrupture" which exists in the Arab-Muslim anthropological system. Our comprehensive study of thecommitments, which are few in number and innovative, of the female descendants who participate in arecreational sport that involves the body and which is usually reserved for males, provides the drivers andconditions of an individualization that is not simply rebellion against an inherited tradition. In order to research the conditions under which the women experienced recreational sports and thepractical implications that this commitment had on their repositioning in social relationships, we usedgrounded theory methodology. We used patronymic tracking in a quantitative survey to obtain the percentageof female descendants participating in recreational sport offered in a neighborhood of Besançon, France, andthen we carried out 54 qualitative interviews. The research material was collected over a 6-month period ofon-site observation of recreational sports activities. We found that family processes of memory and cultural transmissions (gender and religiousreferences) are drivers of a generational dynamic: sources of changes negotiated between the generation ofimmigrants and that of the descendants. Based on pre-and post-immigration experiences, these processesdetermine the definition of female and male status, which stimulates in different ways family and socialpositions, as well as a new type of involvement with space and the new practices that accompany participationin sport. The status of the transmitter, the gender of the inheritor, her place among siblings, and thestructuration of her place define not only the individualized conditions of transmission, but also the conditionsof their reception into the common family background. In a generalized system of exchange, the matrices ofexperience (neighborhood and school environs) are representative of the over-all context of validation orinvalidation of parental educational strategies and define the conditions either for their acceptance or for theirgradual reorientation. All these types of transmissions and variables produce sport experiences that are variedand different for female descendants of North African immigrants. .The implications of this commitment to emancipation by the female descendants of North Africanimmigrants in a disadvantaged neighborhood are demonstrated in our study in terms of their experiences, i.e.,in what they do and what they are when they say they are emancipated. The resulting assemblage of varyingopposing and similar elements reflects their optional identification based on interactions, a particular time, andspace. It enables these women to reconcile their conflicting aspirations and references, and the resultingconstraints, and at the same time to take a new place in filiation and society via the multi-leveled process ofself-determination, individualization, distinguishing themselves from other women, and self-empowerment.

This dissertation aims to analyze the constitution of ethnic and linguistic identities of a group of Polish descendants who live in a rural community in the countryside of the State of Paraná, Brazil. In the study, we identified some literacy events which occur in Polish, both at school and out of it, aiming at verifying how these events contribute to identity construction, and the vitality of the Polish language in that community. This research is theoretically based on identity construction (HALL, 2005; GEE, 2000), literacy practices (STREET, 1984), as well as on the vitality of minority languages (TERBORG; GARCÍA LANDA, 2011). The nature of the research is qualitative-interpretative with an ethnographic perspective, based on the ethnography of language (GARCEZ e SCHULZ, 2015), and the instruments for data generation are audiovisual recordings made of Polish language classes and questionnaires answered by learners, the teacher, and the school pedagogue. Semi structured interviews were also conducted with people in the community, as well as notes in a field journal and audio recordings of the interviews. Besides, several documents were analyzed, as the ones from CELEM (Centro de Línguas Estrangeiras Modernas – Center for Modern Foreign Languages), referring to the school´s implementation of the Polish language; the official registration book, which contains the community´s parishional documents, and at the Museum, where the historical documents connected to the Polish culture were studied, which subsidized the development of this research. The results show that religious tradition is one of the identitary aspects which are more rooted and present in the community to this day. However, some literacy events which happened at the local church, and maintained the vitality of that language, unfortunately are no longer held. The only literacy event which is still kept in church, in Polish, is the recital of the rosary before dominical masses. In the familiar scope, the Polish language is frequently used, it is a Brazilian Polish, mixed with the Portuguese language (code-switching). For this reason, some expressions like “broken Polish”, “Brazilian Polish”, or “countryside Polish” are expressions used by the participants to refer to the Polish language they speak; it often indicates low self-esteem regarding themselves and others. As to the ethnic-linguistic identity, this alternates between Brazilian and Polish identities, depending on their interlocutors and the circumstances surrounding them. Finally, the results show that, in general, the women (“doers” and “invisible”) in Santa Faustina take on several roles, especially in the house and the church, but they are not empowered amidst the community.

Construction of professional identity of minority teachers : the role of interpersonal relationships in the family and school contextsAudebert, Pascale 15 October 2014 (has links)
This study, conducted from a socioconstructivist framework, used qualitative methodology to explore the construction of minority teachers’ professional identity. Data collection consisted of in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 primary school teachers aged from 30 to 35 years old (10 descendants of immigrants – 10 of French origin). The verbatim was analyzed using content analysis methodology. Comparisons between the 2 groups have shown differences and similarities in their: familial education, values, relationship to religion, career choice, professional representations. The analysis of minority teachers’ interviews has revealed the primordial contributions of interpersonal relationships in the construction of their professional Self (with significant others from family and school contexts, in particular). As descendants of immigrants they have faced specific challenges (face racism and discrimination, build an ethnic identity, etc.), the diversity of their psychosocial integration paths occurs in the construction of contrasted professional identities. Some of them are motivated by a desire of social justice, the goal of creating a bridge between mainstream culture and minority cultures becoming a career mission. Others, don’t do anything in particular for disadvantaged pupils or for those belonging to ethnic minorities.

Oxytocin is a small peptide synthesized in hypothalamic neurons. She is well known for its roles in reproduction and social interactions, especially in mother-infant interactions, but also displays analgesic effects. During this thesis, I tried to get a better understanding of the circuits underlying OT analgesia. Then, I tried to determine if neonatal maternal separation, affecting mother-infant interactions, alters adult pain responses and oxytocin analgesia. This work allowed to identify a subgroup of oxytocinergic neurons in the hypothalamus, able to decrease pain through a dual action. They directly inhibit nociceptive transmission in the spinal cord and control the activity of another population of oxytocinergic neurons releasing the peptide in the bloodstream. Our work on maternal separation shows that it induces nociceptive hypersensitivity at adulthood, and a dysfunction in oxytocin analgesia.

Previous issue date: 2010-03-31 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present investigation aims to comprehend the African and Afro descendants schooling in
'Nossa Senhora do Desterro', from 1870 to 1888. Then, Desterro was the capital of the
province of Santa Catarina in the imperial period, corresponding to what is today the central
part of the Florianópolis city. The theoretical background is mainly based on the Homi
Bhabha s post-colonial perspective and on the Michel de Certeau s tactics conception. The
empirical basis is built up on documental and bibliographical sources, mostly, of Province
Presidents reports, Public Instruction Board s documents, as well as rules and research about
the period. Throughout the text I discuss the 19th Century Public Instruction at Desterro,
covering aspects of the city and the African origin population, and concerns about legislation and Primary and Secondary school. I also present experiences on African descendants school Problematization looking at indexes , intentions , initiatives , and I analyze the lifetime of the African descendant João da Cruz e Sousa. In general marks, the research presents
elements about the popular instruction and about the possibilities the African descendant population could enlighten on the policies concerning the education of the poor. It also presents the complex movement of presence/absence, in which the experiences of Africans
and African descendants presence in schools coexist with an absence process, in a sense of invisibility with a covering of their tracks in the representations engendered / Esta investigação objetiva compreender o processo de escolarização de africanos e afrodescendentes na Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Desterro, de 1870 a 1888.

Brasil (BARROS, 2005; FONSECA, 2005; ARAUJO e SILVA, 2005; CUNHA, 2005;
CARDOSO, 2005 e CRUZ, 2005).
Abstract: This study characterizes the hip hop cultural movement as a literacy agency and its activists, the belonging communities and those which are related to it, as literacy agents. The study shows, from sociol-historical perspective that the unique literacies used by the young participants of this research have allowed them to redimension their identities, obtaining new meanings for their social roles and places, as established by a society still marked by tense and uneven racial and social relationships. The basic theoretical framework of this study is given by the Bakhtinian-perspective on language (Voloshinov, Bakhtin, etc) ; the multiple and heterogeneous literacy approach of the New Studies of Literacyi (Kleiman, 1995; 2006a, Barton and Hamilton, 2000; Rojo, 2009), the Cultural Studies contributions for the study of identity (Hall, 2000, 2003; Gilroy, 2001; Canclini, 2005 and the studies about education among Afro-descendants in Brazil (Barros, 2005; Fonseca, 2005; Araujo e Silva, 2005; Cunha, 2005; Cardoso, 2005 e Cruz, 2005, entre outros). The data for the study was obtained from questionnaires, open-talk meetings, individual interviews and autobiographies, and from materials produced and socialized by the participants, such as DVDs, CDs, fanzines, rap lyrics, projects, guides for lectures and workshops. The analysis pointed out a reinvention
of the language practices by these subjects, in dialogue with school literacies, their
daily routine literacy practices and with those practices made by black movement. The configuration of this set of written and oral language non-linear, multimodal, heterogeneous and creative practices is called in this study literacies of reexistence, literacies since they responsively contest, create, propose changes in language uses that have already been socially ratified and valorized. / Doutorado / Lingua Materna / Doutor em Linguística Aplicada
