The Old Man and the Sea: Hemingway, heteroglossia, and the hero's voice

Spitler, Carole Sue 01 January 2002 (has links)
In this subjective hero concept lies an intriguing aspect of Bakhtin's paradigm: A hero is not necessarily a living entity; a hero can be ideas, objects and locations. When viewed through the lens of traditional western rhetorical theory, Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea appears as a monologue wherein Santiago seemingly speaks for the author about the subject of doom and man's relationship to the world.

Exploring first-year Students’ Voice and Subjectivity in Academic Writing at a University in South Africa

Ambe, Martina Bi January 2019 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / Literacy development in South African higher education is increasingly challenged by several issues in dialogue and language of tuition. Despite the widening of access to South African universities, research shows that a large majority of entry-level university students are still failing in their chosen programme of studies. Almost all universities in the democratic South Africa incorporate academic development programs in first-year modules as an awareness raising attempt to scaffold novice students into the vocabulary of their various disciplines. However, these development programs sometimes fail to address the language needs of some of the students who have had more than seven years of schooling in their first languages (IsiXhosa and Afrikaans). My study seeks to explore how additional language IsiXhosa and Afrikaans students understand and construct written knowledge in one literacy development course using English medium of instruction. I further explore lecturers’ and tutors’ perspectives of the demand of sounding a scholarly voice in academic writing by entry-level students in their new roles as scholars in the University of the Western Cape (UWC).Literature indicated gaps when it comes to students’ and lectures’ perceptions on the construction of voice in academic writing in a language that the students are not comfortable in.

'E io a lui' : dialogic models of conversion and self-representation in medieval Italian poetry

Bowe, David James Alexander January 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines the role of dialogic processes in representations of conversion narratives and expressions of poetic subjectivity across the works of four poets: Guittone d’Arezzo (c.1235-1294), Guido Guinizzelli (c.1230-1276), Guido Cavalcanti (c.1255-1300) and Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). The introduction proposes a definition of ‘dialogic processes’ drawing on theoretical models of performativity and dialogism. It presents the usefulness of these approaches to the analysis of narratives of conversion and accounts of subjectivity in poetry. Chapter 1 analyses Guittone’s conversion poetics in light of these processes and seeks to complicate the teleology of his narrative of self. Chapter 2 examines the poetry of Guinizzelli and Cavalcanti, first establishing the ‘poetic conversion’ of Guinizzelli in dialogue with his own and others’ poetry. It then examines Cavalcanti’s physiological performance of a polyphonic subjectivity and how far this poetic expression partakes in the dialogic processes previously discussed in relation to religiously inflected writing. Chapters 3 and 4 will explore the manifestations of these phenomena of dialogue and performance in Dante’s oeuvre with particular focus on the Commedia as a key site for intertextual interaction both with his own earlier texts and with the texts (and figures) of the other poets under discussion. These chapters will seek to reopen the teleological closure which Dante tries to impose on his vernacular predecessors, as well as on his own works. The weight of critical engagement with Dante’s predecessors has treated them as sources or reference points for Dante’s own praxis. I aim to consider Guittone, Guinizzelli and Cavalcanti on their own terms and in dialogue with one another before approaching Dante through these poets, thus reconstructing the networks of poetic dialogue in late medieval Italy, and situating Dante firmly within a dialogic tradition of narratives of self and conversion.

The wyvern's tale : a thought experiment in Bakhtinian dual chronotope occupation

Newell, Marilee January 2010 (has links)
The non-fiction introduction to The Wyvern’s Tale: A Thought Experiment in Bakhtinian Dual Chronotope Occupation documents the evolution of the novel, The Wyvern’s Tale, from the ideas that inspired it to its current incarnation as a full-length novel intended for an adult audience. It comprises an explanation of the novel’s main concept, Bakhtinian dual chronotope occupation, as well as an idea-focused account of the creative-writing process. Detailed in the introduction’s theoretical premise is the relationship between Mikhail Bakhtin’s theories of chronotope and the carnivalesque and the ideal of the divided union in Chalcedonian Christology. This relationship revolves around the state of existing in two time-spaces at once. The novel, The Wyvern’s Tale, explores this dual existence imaginatively using the setting of parallel worlds – the every-day world and a fictional world called Wyvern – as well as a protagonist, who functions in the fictional world as a Christ-figure. Particular thematic emphasis is placed on differing perceptions of truth and reality, and on the transformative power of costumes. The novel’s outcome, dependent on the reader’s decision as to whether dual chronotope occupation is possible or impossible, is respectively either hopeful or tragic. It attempts to reflect the outcome of the life and death of Christ depending on whether his co-existence as God and man was real or imagined.

Couture-Grondin, Élise 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis studies the antiauthoritarian specificity of the short stories that Luisa Valenzuela published in the Cambio de armas (1982) and Simetrías (1993), written during the military dictatorship (1976-1983), and ten years after the return to dictatorship. The analysis of the stories establishes a dialogue with Valenzuela’s essay Peligrosas palabras (2001) and with different theoretical perspectives that we study in each chapter (socio-linguistic, feminist theory, and cultural criticism). This study emphasizes how the expression of desire, in Valenzuela’s work, criticizes the relations of domination that appear during the dictatorship and in the patriarchal society. The short stories 1) denounce the effects of repression on the subject trough open sexuality and a rejection of the public-private division: 2) underline the materiality of the body, marked by social and power relations, allowing for the creation of a feminine objectivity without separating the body from the mind; 3) create new ways of representing memory, allowing for a redefinition of the relations to history and to the other. In Valenzuela’s discourse, desire is presented as a demand for equality in social relationships, and for an alternative vision of language, subjectivity, and memory.

Le discours rapporté dans les débats politiques télévisés : formes et fonctions des recours au discours autre : le cas des débats de l'entre-deux-tours des présidentielles françaises (1974-2012) / Reported speech in televised political debates : forms and functions of the use of other speech : the case of the debates between the two rounds of the French presidential elections (1974-2012)

Caillat, Domitille 08 December 2016 (has links)
Grounded in the framework of the discourse-in-interaction analysis, this work analyses the forms and functions of reported speech within the six second-round debates of the French presidential election taking place in France between 1974 and 2012. Its object is to precisely determine the purpose of reported speech (which one might think that it is not truly constitutive of the genre) within these interactions in which candidates’main aims are self-promotion and the opponent depreciation.By analysing in details the almost four hundreds extracts recorded in the corpus, our work shows that reported speeches aim, depending on their place within the exchanges, their source (the opponent, a third party or the speaker) and their propositional content, three different purposes we can consider as self-promotion, defence and argument — these purposes can be furthermore supported by some para- and non-verbal elements (voice movements, facial expression, posture, eye expression and gesture deployed at the same time).Following an initial intuition, this study reveals that not only reported speeches serve the candidates’ main goals during debates, but also, depending on their source, they assure different and complementary functions (functions serving the dynamic within the exchanges and the construction of a speech in confrontation, functions exclusively argumentative, or also functions relating to the debates global purpose).

Leitura intertextual na escola / Intertextual reading in school

Gonçalves, Maria Silvia 09 March 2004 (has links)
This essay is an intertextual reading practice proposal (for the third and fourth cycles of elementary school) in which the intertextuality phenomenon, shown by various authors opinions, enhances and enriches the reading process, contributing to develop a more proficient and prepared reader, capable of facing the literate world demands. Through textual exploration, inferential activities are proposed (for which the student has linguistic and extra linguistic knowledge) which can lead the student not only to establish relationships between elements of the text itself, but also between this text and other texts and between this text and its own reality. Often the reading process is not complete due to the lack of prior knowledge by the students. The mediator interference, a more mature reader, becomes then desirable and necessary to improve the adequacy of the reading process, to expand the beginner reader universe and to acquire metacognitive mechanisms. By clarifying intersection zones (intertext identification), through discursive procedures, there is not only the inter-textual dialogue recognition but also a more complete text interpretation (by the implicit reading) including polyphony cases (presence of various voices in the text) and the pursuit of the intentionality and the ideological positioning of the author. The text is considered the main raw material of the Portuguese teacher. Paradoxically, the performance of public and private schools students is still weak in the reading aspect. The configuration of the learner-reader in their social-cognitive aspects and a few considerations about how the reading activities are led in the classroom aim to show the need for an interlocutor who can propose dialogical and more meaningful relationships in the fight with the text, also expanding the range of options for different genres, with no time, space, style, modality, nationality barriers. Based on Vygotsky\'s notion of mediation and proximal development zone and on Bakhtins verbal interaction; Marcuschi and Roccos analysis on the role of school and didactic materials in the readers development; as well as the Discourse Analysis, the Theory of Enunciation and the Textual Linguistics principles, supported by Genette, Maingueneau, Authier-Revuz, Brandão, Koch, Van Dijk and Sant\'Anna, some examples of analysis are suggested to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposal. Finally, intertextuality is linked to interdisciplinary and the conclusion is that reading is nowadays a powerful tool to enhance information exchange in the globalized world; in the constitution of an ethical and critical reader-conscious subject; transforming learners in citizens who can conquer a tool of internal search. This document attempts to prove that reading, as a password for knowledge, can lead to power and, as the password for the self- knowledge, can lead to wisdom.

Fórum educacional digital: dialogismo e construção do conhecimento

Silva, Sandra Gonçalves da 15 May 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T19:34:37Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Sandra Goncalves da Silva.pdf: 2129701 bytes, checksum: c1bf03e2cfe37d956cb3b4904387b836 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-05-15 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / In this work, we aim to examine traces of dialogism in messages of digital educational forums of a semi-present discipline of a Language Course at Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Sao Paulo. This search occurs from the assumption that, in order to meet the purpose of discussing the topic at issue in the teaching and learning process, the formation and operation of discourses of digital educational forums occur in two ways: restricted dialogue, as a way of interaction, and wider dialogue, as dialogue between discourses, in which the point of view of a message in a digital educational forum is not an isolated construction. In reality, it is a link between the discourses that precede and succeed it. This research aims at contributing to the studies of genres in a discursive domain, yet in the making and called the digital educational forum by Crescitelli, Geraldini and Quevedo (2008). Using the Bakhtinian studies, we carried out an analysis on the dialogic connection of the reaction-response of something just said and the interconnection with the next thing said as well as the strategic marks used in the speech of the other. The results obtained have shown the dialogue as a very important phenomenon in interaction and as a way towards a collaborative construction in digital educational forums / Neste trabalho, buscamos examinar evidências da dialogia em mensagens de fóruns de uma disciplina semipresencial do curso de Letras da PUC-SP.
