Modal analysis and flow control for drag reduction on a Sport Utility Vehicle / Choix de méthode d'optimisation appliquée au contrôle d'écoulement en aérodynamique externe pour réduire les pertes aérodynamiques sur maquette de véhicule type SUV

L’industrie automobile fournie de plus en plus d’effort pour optimiser l’aérodynamique externe des véhicules afin de réduire son empreinte écologique. Dans ce cadre, l’objectif de ce projet est d’examiner les structures tourbillonnaires responsables de la dégradation de traînée et de proposer une solution de contrôle actif permettant d’améliorer l’efficacité aérodynamique d’un véhicule SUV. Après une étude expérimentale de la maquette POSUV échelle réduite, une analyse modale croisée permet d’identifier les structures périodiques corrélées de l’écoulement qui pilotent la dépression sur le hayon. Une solution de contrôle optimale par jets pulsés sur le parechoc arrière, est obtenue avec un algorithme génétique. Celle-ci permet de réduire la dépression du hayon de 20% et l’analyse croisée des résultats instationnaires avec contrôle montre un changement significatif de la distribution spectrale. Après deux études préliminaires sur la rampe inclinée à 25° et sur le Corps d’Ahmed à 47°, la simulation de POSUV à partir d’un solveur LES, en éléments finis, est validé par rapport aux résultats expérimentaux. L’approfondissement des résultats 3D permet de comprendre les pertes aérodynamiques. La simulation de l’écoulement contrôlé permet également d’identifier les mécanismes du contrôle d’écoulements. / The automotive industry dedicates a lot of effort to improve the aerodynamical performances of road vehicles in order to reduce its carbon footprint. In this context, the target of the present work is to analyze the origin of aerodynamic losses on a reduced scale generic Sport Utility Vehicle and to achieve a drag reduction using an active flow control strategy. After an experimental characterization of the flow past the POSUV, a cross-modal DMD analysis is used to identify the correlated periodical features responsible for the tailgate pressure loss. Thanks to a genetic algorithm procedure, 20% gain on the tailgate pressure is obtained with optimal pulsed blowing jets on the rear bumper. The same cross-modal methodology allows to improve our understanding of the actuation mechanism. After a preliminary study of the 25° inclined ramp and of the Ahmed Body computations, the numerical simulation of the POSUV is corroborated with experiments using the cross-modal method. Deeper investigations on the three-dimensional flow characteristics explain more accurately the wake flow behavior. Finally, the controlled flow simulations propose additional insights on the actuation mechanisms allowing to reduce the aerodynamic losses.

Small wind turbines mounted to existing structures

Small wind turbines, and especially urban-mounted turbines which require no dedicated pole, have garnered great public enthusiasm in recent years. This enthusiasm has fueled widespread growth among energy conservationists, and estimates predict that the power produced nationally by small wind will increase thirty-fold by 2013. Unfortunately, most of the wind resources currently available have been designed for larger, rural-mounted turbines; thus, they are not well suited for this nascent market. A consequence of this is that many potential urban small wind turbine owners over-predict their local wind resource, which is both costly and inefficient. According to a recent study published by Encraft Ltd., small wind turbines mounted to buildings far underperformed their rural pole mounted counterparts. As a proposed solution to this problem, this project introduces the concept of a Web-based Wind Assessment System (WWAS). This system combines all the necessary resources for potential urban small wind turbine customers into a single web-based tool. The system also presents the concept of a modular wind measurement system, which couples with the WWAS to provide real-time wind data measurements. The benefits of the system include its ease of use, flexibility of installation, data accessibility from any web browser, and expert advice. The WWAS prevents potential clients from investing in a system that may not be viable for their location. In addition, a small wind turbine is designed in this project, which has a unique modular mounting system, allowing the same baseline wind turbine to attach to various structures using interchangeable mounting hardware. This includes such accessible urban structures as street lights, building corners, flag poles, and building walls, among others. This design also utilizes concepts that address some of the challenges associated with mounting small wind turbines to existing urban structures. These concepts include: swept tip blades and lower RPM to reduce noise; vibration suppression using rubber shims; a netted duct to protect wildlife; and a direct-drive permanent magnet generator to ensure low starting torque. Finally, the cost of this system is calculated using off-the-shelf components, which minimize testing and certification expense. This small wind turbine system is designed to be grid-connected, has a 6 foot diameter rotor, and is rated at 1 kW. This design features a unique modular interchangeable mounting system. The cost for this complete system is estimated to be $2,050. If a users' site has an average wind speed of 14 mph (6.5 m/s), this system will generate a return on investment in 8.5 years, leaving over 10 years of profit. The profit for this system, at this sample average wind speed, yields over $4,000 during its 20-year design life, which is a two-fold return on investment. This project has implications for various stakeholders in the small wind turbine market, including designers, engineers, manufacturers, and potential customers. Equally important is its potential role in guiding our future national--even global--energy agenda.

The Hair Bundle: Fluid-Structure Interaction in the Inner Ear

A multitude of processes cooperate to produce the sensation of sound. The key initial step, the transformation from mechanical motion into an electrical signal, takes place in highly specialized mechanosensitive organelles that are called hair bundles due to their characteristic appearance. Each hair bundle comprises many apposed cylindrical stereocilia that are located in a liquid-filled compartment of the inner ear. The viscous liquid surrounding the hair bundle dissipates energy and dampens oscillations, which poses a fundamental physical challenge to the high sensitivity and sharp frequency selectivity of hearing. To understand the structure-function relationship in this complex system, a realistic physical model of the hair bundle with an appropriate representation of the fluid-structure interactions is needed to identify the relevant physical effects. In this work a novel approach is introduced to analyze the mechanics of the fluid-structure interaction problem in the inner ear. Because the motions during normal mechanotransduction are much smaller than the geometrical scales, a unified linear system of equations describes with sufficient accuracy the behavior of the liquid and solid in terms of a displacement variable. The finite-element method is employed to solve this system of partial differential equations. Based on data from the hair bundle of the bullfrog's sacculus, a detailed model is constructed that resolves simultaneously the interaction with the surrounding liquid as well as the coupling liquid in the narrow gaps between the individual stereocilia. The experimental data are from high-resolution interferometric measurements at physiologically relevant amplitudes in the range from a fraction of a nanometer to several tens of nanometers and over a broad range of frequencies from one millihertz to hundred kilohertz. Different modes of motion are analyzed and their induced viscous drag is calculated. The investigation reveals that grouping stereocilia in a bundle dramatically reduces the total drag as compared to the sum of the drags on individual stereocilia moving in isolation. The stereocilia in a hair bundle are interconnected by oblique tip links that transmit the energy in a sound to the mechanotransduction channels and by horizontal top connectors that provide elastic coupling between adjacent stereocilia. During hair-bundle deflections, the tip links induce additional drag by causing small but very dissipative relative motions between stereocilia; this effect is offset by the horizontal top connectors that restrain such relative movements, assuring that the hair bundle moves as a unit and keeping the total drag low. In the model the stiffness of the links, the stiffness of the stereocilia, and the geometry are carefully adjusted to match experimental observations. The references are stiffness and drag measurements, as well as the coherence measurements for the bundle's opposite edges, both with and without the tip links. The results are further validated by a comparison with the relative motions measured in a sinusoidally stimulated bundle for the distortion frequencies at which movements are induced by the nonlinearity imposed by channel gating. The model of the fluid-structure interactions described here provides insight into the key step in the perception of sound and the method presented provides an efficient and reliable approach to fluid-structure interaction problems at small amplitudes. / Bei der Hörwahrnehmung eines Klangs spielen viele komplexe Prozesse zusammen. Der Schlüsselprozess, die Umwandlung mechanischer Schwingungsbewegung in elektrische Signale, findet in den Haarbündeln im Innenohr statt. Diese Haarbündel sind hoch entwickelte mechanosensitive Organellen, bestehend aus vielen nahe beieinander stehenden Stereozilien umgeben von Flüssigkeit. Die beträchtliche Viskosität dieser Flüssigkeit führt zur Energiedissipation und zur Schwingungsdämpfung, was im Gegensatz zur bekannten hohen Empfindlichkeit und der ausgezeichneten Frequenzselektivität der Hörwahrnehmung steht. Um die Komponenten des Haarbündelsystems in ihrem funktionalen Zusammenspiel besser zu verstehen, bedarf es eines wirklichkeitsgetreuen Modells unter Einbeziehung der Wechselwirkung zwischen Flüssigkeit und Struktur. Mit dieser Arbeit wird ein neuer Ansatz vorgestellt, um die Mechanik der Fluid-Struktur-Wechselwirkung im Innenohr zu analysieren. Da die Bewegungen bei der normalen Mechanotransduktion wesentlich kleiner als die geometrischen Abmessungen sind, ist es möglich, das Verhalten von Fluid und Struktur in Form der Verschiebungsvariable in einem linearen einheitlichen System von Gleichungen ausreichend genau zu beschreiben. Dieses System von partiellen Differentialgleichungen wird mit der Finite-Elemente-Methode gelöst. Basierend auf experimentell ermittelten Daten vom Haarbündel des Ochsenfrosches wird ein detailliertes Modell erstellt, welches sowohl die Interaktion mit der umgebenden Flüssigkeit als auch die koppelnde Flüssigkeit in den engen Spalten zwischen den einzelnen Stereozilien erfasst. Die experimentellen Daten sind Ergebnisse von hochauflösenden interferometrischen Messungen bei physiologisch relevanten Bewegungsamplituden im Bereich von unter einem Nanometer bis zu mehreren Dutzend Nanometern, sowie über einen breiten Frequenzbereich von einem Millihertz bis hundert Kilohertz. Das Modell erlaubt die Berechnung der auftretenden viskosen Widerstände aus der numerischen Analyse der verschiedenen beobachteten Bewegungsmoden. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass durch die Gruppierung zu einem Bündel der Gesamtwiderstand drastisch reduziert ist, im Vergleich zur Summe der Widerstände einzelner Stereozilien, die sich individuell und unabhängig voneinander bewegen. Die einzelnen Stereozilien in einem Haarbündel sind durch elastische Strukturen mechanisch miteinander verbunden: Die Energie des Schalls wird durch schräg angeordnete sogenannte Tiplinks auf die mechanotransduktiven Kanäle übertragen, wohingegen horizontale Querverbindungen die Stereozilien direkt koppeln. Während der Haarbündelauslenkung verursachen die Tiplinks zusätzlichen Widerstand durch stark dissipative Relativbewegungen zwischen den Stereozilien. Die horizontalen Querverbindungen unterdrücken diese Bewegungen und sind dafür verantwortlich, dass sich das Haarbündel als Einheit bewegt und der Gesamtwiderstand gering bleibt. Die Steifigkeit der Stereozilien und der Verbindungselemente sowie deren Geometrie sind in dem Modell sorgfältig angepasst, um eine Übereinstimmung mit den Beobachtungen aus verschiedenen Experimenten zu erzielen. Als Referenz dienen Steifigkeits- und Widerstandsmessungen, sowie Kohärenzmessungen für die gegenüberliegenden Außenkanten des Bündels, die jeweils mit und ohne Tiplinks durchgeführt wurden. Darüberhinaus sind die Ergebnisse durch den Vergleich mit experimentell beobachteten Relativbewegungen validiert, die das Haarbündel infolge von sinusförmiger Anregung bei Distorsionsfrequenzen zeigt. Diese haben ihren Ursprung in dem nichtlinearen Prozess des öffnens von Ionenkanälen. Das entwickelte Modell eines Haarbündels liefert neue Einblicke in den Schlüsselprozess der auditiven Wahrnehmung. Zur Behandlung von Problemen der Fluid-Struktur-Wechselwirkungen bei kleinen Amplituden hat sich der hier ausgearbeitete Ansatz als effizient und zuverlässig erwiesen.

Trata-se de uma abordagem etnográfica, misturando reflexões sobre etnografia e transformismo, para pulverizar e re-significar as apresentações cênicas ditas marginais no âmbito das revisões de perspectivas e de assuntos nas artes cênicas no Brasil. Sendo uma autoetnografia transformista, onde a escritura encontra a performance, este estudo comporta trejeitos da escrita performativa, para tentar atender o “ser” da performance, assim como a sua ontologia, ou seja, a representação sem reprodução. Considera ainda as encenações do desaparecer e, ao escrever sobre o indocumentável evento da performance, tem consciência de que altera o próprio evento. Assim, também compreende: os Rastros do Desaparecimento, a Presença do Corpo em Performance, o Cross-dressing ou Transvestismo ou Transformismo, a Política/Poética Camp, Alteridade, ou as representações transnacionais do feminino coreográfico, uma grafia acerca dos Global Queerscapes, a drag queen na atualidade soteropolitana, em uma Epistemologia Drag, assim como, Nacionalidade, Transformismo e Homocultura nos cortejos e movimentos políticos públicos, em Salvador, e sua aproximação com a figura icônica da Carmem Miranda, que tem sido apropriada por homossexuais transvestidos, em todas as latitudes, como o epítome camp do excesso e da frescura internacionais. / What a Drag!: Ethnography, Performance and Female Impersonation by Fernando Antonio de Paula Passos examines the performative presence of cross-dressed men in Salvador’s public scenes: cross-dressing as the opportunity for the deconstruction of gender polarities. It consists of an approach that blends self-reflexive ethnography with issues of female impersonation and cross-dressing in order to study the multiplicity of their performances, their re-signification, their relatively recent arrival in the context of revisionist perspectives and subject matters in the academic field of the performing arts in Brazil. Incorporating concepts of auto-ethnography and theoretical transvestism, it brings together writing and performance in what is now known as performative writing, as it struggles to uncover what the “being” of performance is all about. In dealing with the ontology of performance as representation without reproduction, it is particularly focused on issues of disappearance. It is also aware that writing about the undocumentable event of the performance alters that same event. It also deals with: traces of disappearance, the presence of the body in performance, cross-dressing, camp, alterity, feminine choreography, Global Queerscapes, drag epistemology, nation, surrealism, pastoral, allegory, political resistance and Carmen Miranda, as the epitome of inter/national camp.

Numerical Investigation on Drag Reduction and Two-Dimensional Turbulence in Diluted Polymer Solutions / Analyse par simulation numérique de la réduction de la traînée et des caractèristiques d’écoulements bidimensionnels par l’ajout de polymères en solution

Les polymères jouent un rôle important sur la réduction de la traînée et la modification de la structure des écoulements. Nous avons utilisé le modèle Oldroyd-B pour étudier l’effet de la viscoélasticité de solutions de polymères dilués sur des écoulements en deux dimensions autour d’obstacles dans un canal. Les obstacles sont pris en compte par la méthode de pénalisation volumique et des condition aux limites artificielles sans réflexion sont imposées à la sortie du canal. La discrétisation est effectuée par des schémas performants en différences finies et la résolution par une méthode multigrille. Les simulations numériques sont effectuées pour une large gamme de nombres de Reynolds et de nombres de Weissenberg. Les caractéristiques détaillées des écoulements viscoélastiques sont analysées et comparées entre elles et celles de l’écoulement du fluide sans polymère. En particulier les jeux de paramètres conduisant à une augmentation ou à une baisse de la traînée. Enfin les effets du polymère sur des écoulements turbulents sont aussi analysés. / Polymer plays an important role on the drag reduction and modification of the structure of flow. In this thesis, Oldroyd B model is employed to study the effectof viscoelasticity for polymer solutions diluted by two-dimensional direct numerical simulation. The obstacles are taken into account by penalization method. The artificial boundary condition is imposed without any reflection on the channel outlet. Flow pasta cylinder is investigated in detailed by present numerical methods. The numerical codes are valid for predicting the drag force and capturing the important character of viscoelastic flow by comparing with experimental and other numerical results. The drag map of the cylinder is obtained at a wide range of Reynolds number and Weissenberg number space. The detailed characteristics of viscoelastic flow are reported in the thesis. The effects of polymer on two-dimensional turbulent flow are also discussed by grid turbulent flow.

Propagation of light in Plasmonic multilayers / Propagation de la lumière dans les multicouches plasmoniques

La plasmonique vise à utiliser des nanostructures métalliques très petites devant la longueur d’onde pour manipuler la lumière. Les structures métalliques sont particulières parce qu’elles contiennent un plasma d’électrons libres qui conditionne complètement leur réponse optique. Notamment, lorsque la lumière se propage à proximité des métaux, sous forme de mode guidés comme les plasmons et les gap-palsmons, elle est souvent lente, présentant une vitesse de groupe faible. Dans ce travail, nous présentons une analyse physique qui permet de comprendre cette faible vitesse en considérant le fait que l’énergie se déplace à l’opposé de la lumière dans les métaux. Nous montrons que la vitesse de groupe est égale à la vitesse de l’énergie pour ces modes guidés, et proposons la notion de ralentissement plasmonique. Finalement, nous étudions comment cette « trainée plasmonique » rend une structure aussi simple qu’un coupleur à prisme sensible à la répulsion entre les électrons du plasma. / The field of plasmonics aims at manipulating light using deeply subwavelength nanostructures. Such structures present a peculiar optical response because of the free electron plasma they contain. Actually, when light propagates in the vicinity of metals, usually under the form of a guided mode, it presents a low group velocity. Such modes, like plasmons and gap-plasmons, are said to be slow. In this work we present a general physical analysis of this phenomenon by studying how the energy propagates in metals in a direction that is opposite to the propagation direction of the mode. We show that the group velocity and the energy velocity are the same, and finally introduce the concept of plasmonic drag. Finally, we study how slow guided modes make structures as simple as prism couplers sensitive to the repulsion between electrons inside the plasma.

Development of a Two-Fluid Drag Law for Clustered Particles Using Direct Numerical Simulation and Validation through Experiments

This dissertation focused on development and utilization of numerical and experimental approaches to improve the CFD modeling of fluidization flow of cohesive micron size particles. The specific objectives of this research were: (1) Developing a cluster prediction mechanism applicable to Two-Fluid Modeling (TFM) of gas-solid systems (2) Developing more accurate drag models for Two-Fluid Modeling (TFM) of gas-solid fluidization flow with the presence of cohesive interparticle forces (3) using the developed model to explore the improvement of accuracy of TFM in simulation of fluidization flow of cohesive powders (4) Understanding the causes and influential factor which led to improvements and quantification of improvements (5) Gathering data from a fast fluidization flow and use these data for benchmark validations. Simulation results with two developed cluster-aware drag models showed that cluster prediction could effectively influence the results in both the first and second cluster-aware models. It was proven that improvement of accuracy of TFM modeling using three versions of the first hybrid model was significant and the best improvements were obtained by using the smallest values of the switch parameter which led to capturing the smallest chances of cluster prediction. In the case of the second hybrid model, dependence of critical model parameter on only Reynolds number led to the fact that improvement of accuracy was significant only in dense section of the fluidized bed. This finding may suggest that a more sophisticated particle resolved DNS model, which can span wide range of solid volume fraction, can be used in the formulation of the cluster-aware drag model. The results of experiment suing high speed imaging indicated the presence of particle clusters in the fluidization flow of FCC inside the riser of FIU-CFB facility. In addition, pressure data was successfully captured along the fluidization column of the facility and used as benchmark validation data for the second hybrid model developed in the present dissertation. It was shown the second hybrid model could predict the pressure data in the dense section of the fluidization column with better accuracy.

Advanced Control Strategies for Diesel Engine Thermal Management and Class 8 Truck Platooning

<div> <div> <div> <p>Commercial vehicles in the United States account for a significant fraction of greenhouse gas emissions and NOx emissions. The objectives of this work are reduction in commercial vehicle NOx emissions through enhanced aftertreatment thermal management via diesel engine variable valve actuation and the reduction of commercial vehicle fuel consumption/GHG emissions by enabling more effective class 8 truck platooning. </p> <p><br></p><p>First, a novel diesel engine aftertreatment thermal management strategy is proposed which utilizes a 2-stroke breathing variable value actuation strategy to increase the mass flow rate of exhaust gas. Experiments showed that when allowed to operate with modestly higher engine-out emissions, temperatures comparable to baseline could be achieved with a 1.75x exhaust mass flow rate, which could be beneficial for heating the SCR catalyst in a cold-start scenario. </p> <p><br></p><p>Second, a methodology is presented for characterizing aerodynamic drag coefficients of platooning trucks using experimental track-test data, which allowed for the development of high-fidelity platoon simulations and thereby enabled rapid development of advanced platoon controllers. Single truck and platoon drag coefficients were calculated for late model year Peterbilt 579’s based on experimental data collected during J1321 fuel economy tests for a two-truck platoon at 65 mph with a 55’ truck gap. Results show drag coefficients of 0.53, 0.50, and 0.45 for a single truck, a platoon front truck, and a platoon rear truck, respectively. </p> <p><br></p><p>Finally, a PID-based platoon controller is presented for maximizing fuel savings and gap control on hilly terrain using a dynamically-variable platoon gap. The controller was vetted in simulation and demonstrated on a vehicle in closed-course functionality testing. Simulations show that the controller is capable of 6-9% rear truck fuel savings on a heavily-graded route compared to a production-intent platoon controller, while increasing control over the truck gap to discourage other vehicles from cutting in. </p></div></div></div>

Dagens samhälle har fått en explosiv utveckling som förverkligar mycket som för bara några år sedan var inte mer än fantasier.  Dagens utvecklingsförsprång ställer oss, byggnadskonstruktörer, inför rejäla utmaningar. Den globala folktillväxten ökar väsentligt vilket leder till tätbefolkade städer. Detta utvecklar ett stort utrymmesbehov hos många av oss. Allt detta resulterar i att efterfrågan på stora och öppna planlösningar ökar markant. En av dagens tendenser är att beställare och arkitekter har en benägenhet att tänja på gränserna på maximala spännvidder mellan bärande betongväggar, för bjälklagstjockleken 250 mm. Detta är ett tillfredsställande mått för att klara ljudklass B. Dessutom är det opraktiskt att variera bjälklagstjocklekar inom ett projekt, därför vill man ha uniformitet med samma tjocklek över projektet. För att vi ska kunna förverkliga vårt uppdrag har vi varit tvungna att genomgå en lång beräknings- och undersökningsprocess. I våra beräkningar har vi lagt fokus på två upplagsfall. Det första upplagsfallet ”fri-inspänd” och det andra fallet ”inspänd-yttre gavelvägg”. Första fallet har varit det värsta fallet i och med att vi bara har ett stöd som måste bära hela betongbjälklaget, vilket har varit en stor utmaning. Andra fallet var dock betydligt enklare på grund av de två stöden som utgjorde en stor del av ”arbetet” och lyfter upp bjälklaget, hela tyngden vilade inte på armeringen som i föregående fall. Inte bara spännvidden skall klaras utan även angiven sprickvidd på 0,3 mm. Examensarbetet består av förklarande fakta som är strikt relaterad till efterföljande beräkningar. Alla beräkningar har utförts för hand, utan programstöd. / Today's society has received a degenerate development embodying much that just a few years ago was no more than fantasies. This development sets us, structural engineers, facing real challenges. The global population growth increases significantly leading to densely populated cities. This develops a large space need for many of us. All this results in the increasing demand for large and open floor plans significantly. One of the current trends is that the clients and architects have a tendency to push the limits on maximum spans between bearing concrete walls, slabs for thickness 250 mm. This is a satisfactory measure of the concrete content to manage audio class B. Moreover, it is impractical to vary the slab thickness within a project, so he wants to have uniformity with the same thickness over the project. For us to be able to realize these long spans between bearing walls, we have been forced to undergo a long calculation and examination process. To begin with, we have studied the company's requirements and preferences, based on that, we started joists analysis. In our calculations, we have laid emphasis on two cases. The first circulation fall "free - clamped" and the second, "clamped- outer end wall." The first case has been the worst case, in that we only have one support that must bear the entire concrete slab, which has been a major challenge. Second case was considerably easier due to the two supports which made a large part of "work" and lifts the slab, the full weight rested not on the reinforcement as in the previous case. Not just the span must be met, but also given crack width of 0.3 mm. The thesis consists of explanatory facts that are strictly related to the subsequent calculations. All calculations have been performed by hand, without program support.
