Academic coaching, school, individual : the emergence of a accompaniment of schooling outside the school

Oller, Anne-Claudine 30 November 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines educational coaching as an emerging educational practice. This form of coaching was imported from the corporate world and seems to echo the new agenda of the educational system: project development, career choices, autonomy, the quest for performance and self-fulfilment. The Law of 1989 required the education system to place the student at its centre, partly by integrating career education into middle and high schools. This in turn resulted in the spread of educational coaching. These injunctions are part of a wider discourse pertaining to the French concept of "cité-par-projet" (Boltanski & Chiappello, 1999) and the construction of the student as an individual. This research shows how the use of such coaching can be considered an educational strategy which is supported by a commitment to social reproduction, social advancement, or at least social stability. Educational coaching is also involved in the construction of the pupil as an individual who seeks to deal with situations which arise at school, to be autonomous, to become a fulfilled individual and, thereby, to feel successful in other terms, rather than merely in relation to academic achievement. Above all, such coaching is meant to build upon the family background, in order to enable pupils to have a better educational experience and to develop those skills necessary both at school and in the workplace. Different methods were used to carry out the fieldwork: semi-structured interviews, participant observation and the statistical analysis of coached pupils' records. To understand the broader context in which educational coaching emerges, schools were also visited; the impact of the new injunctions was studied, especially in relation to the academic and social characteristics of pupils.

This study seeks to understand the formation processes of teachers that develop environmental education in schools. The research falls into the line of research of science education: teaching and learning processes at schools, universities and research laboratories. The main goals of this dissertation are: to understand the constitution of the teacher as an environmental educator; to understand the concepts of environmental education and environment from the narratives and subjectivity of teachers; to perceive the possibilities and limitations of environmental education in schools from the standpoint of teachers and their motivations for carrying it out in this context; and finally, to understand how the pedagogical practices of environmental education are proposed and developed in the school context. In this investigative path, the methodology used is qualitative and epistemological approaches are phenomenological and hermeneutical in nature. The first condition for participation in this survey was that the investigated subjects were teachers and alleged to be environmental educators. We analyze the narratives of four teachers who alleged to be environmental educators, two who work in kindergarten and two who work in the early grades of elementary school. To collect data we used a semistructured interview scheme. Teachers were then asked to produce a diary of a week of classroom stories. The narratives obtained were transcribed and analyzed through Textual Discourse, a recursive process of writing that begins with the production of units of meaning for further categorization and elaboration of metatexts. From the analysis three categories emerged; each constituted a chapter of this dissertation: (I) The Constitution of the Environmental Educator, (II) Environmental Education in Schools, and (III) Environmental Educations in Classrooms: experiences narrated by environmental education teachers. The expectation of this research is that from the knowledge of the experiences that happened and happen to teachers, from their subjectivities and narratives, one can understand the constitution of the teacher as an environmental educator and, once its constitutional process is known, we can understand how Environmental Education occurs in the scholar context.

This master's thesis was developed at the Professional Graduate Program in Management and Evaluation of Public Education (PPGP) of the Center for Public Policies and Evaluation of Education at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (CAEd/UFJF). This work aims to analyze the education process of school managers in the interior of the Amazonas State, based on the School of Public Education Managers program, and its relationship with school management and organization. In order to do so, it seeks to identify the possible implications of the gap between the training received from the aforementioned continuing education program and the way school management and organization is performed by the managers. Our hypothesis is that the education processes offered through SEDUC/AM to school managers are directly related to their performance within schools. As observed in loco, the manager's “not doing” attitude in certain aspects evidences the distance between the education received by the managers and the actual organization of the school. Therefore, the relevance of this study is justified because it allows a greater understanding of how the relationship between the school practical activities and the knowledge acquired through the program is, or is not, materialized at the heart of the school, mainly in the administrative part. This research is qualitative in nature, characterized as a descriptive case study. The research process was based on the studies carried out by: Heloisa Lück (2000/2005), which discusses the training of school managers and the challenges imposed on school management; Libâneo (2009), which deals with aspects related to school organization and management; Gracindo (2009), which deals with school management focusing on the essence of the education process. The qualitative methodology adopted in this study relied, initially, on bibliographical and documentary research and, later, on collective interview with the managers who graduated from the School of Public Education Managers program, coming from different municipalities of the Amazonas State. The research showed that, although the training moments promoted by SEDUC are of great value for the organization of the school manager’s work, it is necessary that the macrosystem sees them as protagonists of the training processes so that they have an active participation in the elaboration of the proposals, since the tendency is to focus on a more pedagogical approach to the manager's performance while the administrative and organizational demands of the school require equal attention. This study also provided evidence that the schools in the interior municipalities, given their geographical peculiarities, call for a more direct and specific look at the local demands, as well as agility in the communicative process in order to solve the problems arising from the daily operations of a school. Therefore, it is appropriate to provide school managers with a greater participation in the decision-making processes regarding the formulation of training proposals, as well as the emergency demands of the school. Therefore, we propose an Educational Action Plan (PAE) that strengthens the management action and establishes the relation of the training processes of the managers to the form of management and organization of the school.
