Avanços na compreensão da subjetividade no behaviorismo radical / Advances in the comprehension of subjectivity in Radical Behaviorism

Pompermaier, Henrique Mesquita 04 July 2013 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T20:30:56Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 5376.pdf: 831394 bytes, checksum: dd6f49eb637e2e88ec9c0810d98c6605 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-07-04 / Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais / This work aims to present and discuss different positions placed in the current debates on approach subjective phenomena in radical behaviorism. On this, the work focuses on the writings of researchers in the field of behavior analysis in the theme of subjectivity, leading to a discussion of the concepts, the role and relevance of the theory of private events for the explanation of behavior. Despite being one of the most recurrent behavior analytic treatment of this theme, the defense of the theory and concept of private events as well as the linking privacy-subjectivity, has not been developed in a consensual way. Thus, the area appears to be facing not only the challenge of establishing a clearer understanding regarding the possibility of a scientific approach to private events, but also of evaluating the coherence and relevance of this concept with the theoreticalphilosophical project of radical behaviorism. From the analysis and discussions developed, it is possible to indicate two distinct directions regarding the advances proposed for the comprehension of subjective phenomena in radical behaviorism: one relates to the refinement of the private events concept, emphasizing its relational and contextual character a circumstantially restricted observability. Another direction is built upon critical positions about the privacy notion, defending the abandonment of the theory and concept of private events in favor of an alternative approach grounded in a relational and immanent metaphysics, and understanding subjective phenomena in a continuum of complexity, referent to the interweaving of repertoires from different levels of selection.

Abaid, Josiane Lieberknecht Wathier January 2008 (has links)
The present study verified the depressive symptoms manifestation as well as the stressful events in children and adolescents through three studies. In the first study, the depressive symptoms and the frequency and impact of adverse events were verified. A total of 257 youths of both genders, age 7-16 took part in this study. Among those, 130 lived at government and non-government protection youth shelters and 127 lived with their families in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. The Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and the Stressful Events in Childhood and Adolescence Inventory (IEEIA) were used to assess depression and stressful events respectively. The results showed a significant higher mean score among institutionalized children and adolescents for both depressive symptoms and frequency of stressful events mentioned. In the second study, the factorial structure of the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI) for 951 children and adolescents, between 7 and 17 years was explored. Data pointed out good psychometric properties and it was possible to present norms in percentiles by gender and age group. Finally, the last study aimed at identifying, with a longitudinal design, a model of predictors of depressive symptoms in the institutionalized sample (N=127) through the regression linear multiple analysis. The predictive model included the initial depressive score, followed by the stressful events “to have problem with teacher”, “feelings of peer rejection” and “one of parents ought to live so far”. It is highlighted the importance of preventing events related mainly to the school and familiar conflicts, as well as promoting interventions with vulnerable families.

The renal effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) in dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD)

Lomas, Amy January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Clinical Sciences / Gregory F. Grauer / Prostaglandins play many important roles in the kidney including regulation of renal blood flow, glomerular filtration, renin release, and sodium excretion. Upon activation of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS), prostaglandin upregulation becomes critical to offset the vasoconstrictive effects of norephinephrine, angiotensin II, and vasopressin. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) produce both their beneficial and detrimental effects through inhibition of the cyclooxygenase enzyme and subsequent interference with prostaglandin production. Healthy canine kidneys express both COX-1 and COX-2, although basal COX-2 expression in dogs is significantly higher than in other species. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that spare COX-1 have exhibited less gastrointestinal toxicity, but no NSAID has been proven safe for the kidney. The kidney is the organ with the second highest reports of adverse drug events, which is usually manifested as functional changes. However, structural changes including renal papillary necrosis, can occasionally be observed. Dogs with chronic kidney disease could be expected to be at increased risk for NSAID-related adverse drug effects. As nephrons and renal reserve are lost in chronic kidney disease, the canine kidney becomes more dependent on COX-2 for production of prostaglandins. Inasmuch as the prevalence of both CKD and OA increases with age, it is expected that many dogs being treated with NSAIDs for OA will have loss of renal reserve and/or early stage CKD. If administration of an NSAID is required for long term treatment of osteoarthritis, frequent monitoring of blood pressure and renal parameters, as well as hepatic enzymes are recommended.

Transfer Connections: Welcoming New Transfer Students

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: Focus has turned to the experiences of new transfer students in four-year institutions partially because of the mandate from President Obama for there to be more college graduates. Though transfer students are familiar with being college students, they still may not be accustomed to their new four-year institutions. At the time of this action research study, there were a very limited number of events to welcome new transfer students to the Arizona State University (ASU) Tempe campus. The purpose of this study was to create knowledge about the transition process of new transfer students to the Tempe campus. I worked with current transfer students to design a welcome event called Transfer Connections. By using a mixed methods design guided by retention and transition theories, a pre- and post-survey, individual interviews, and a focus group, I sought to answer questions about their transition process. In order to answer my research questions, this included exploring whether or not Transfer Connections had an influence on the success strategies they used, the type of support they gained, and their levels of feeling like they mattered. Since this was an action research study, I also explored my role as both a researcher and a practitioner. Results showed students did not learn specific success strategies, though they did learn about resources specific to ASU. The students also gained a level of support through the connections they made with other students. These connections influenced how the students felt they mattered to both ASU and other students. Future iterations of Transfer Connections will include more opportunities for new transfer students to develop connections. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Leadership and Innovation 2016

Observation of celestial phenomena in the Gospel of Matthew

Um, Hongsuk January 2016 (has links)
A close reading of the gospel of Matthew highlights the striking reports of the observation of distinct celestial phenomena in the narrative (e.g. 2.1-12; 3.16-17; 17.5; 24.29-31). However, the motif of celestial phenomena in Matthew lacks a full or even comprehensive investigation. These have been addressed only in part both in journal articles and in individual chapters of various books. Looking at these celestial phenomena as interrelated parts of the evangelist’s wide theological perspective in the gospel, this study explores Matthew’s description of these occurrences in relation to the contemporary perspective on celestial phenomena and astrological application. It seeks to assess what meaning and significance the Matthean representation of celestial phenomena was designed to have in the process of the gospel narrative and for the readership. In so doing, this study discusses the conception of heaven and the attitude towards celestial phenomena in the Graeco-Roman world in the Second Temple period, the Sitz im Leben of the Matthean community, and the significance of the heaven motif in the gospel narrative, as preliminaries to the investigation of Matthew’s portrayal of celestial phenomena. This study will show that the motif of celestial phenomena in Matthew carefully crafted and thoughtfully arranged plays a significant role in authenticating the identity of Jesus.

Scotland's future and 2014 : political narratives of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the independence referendum

Whigham, Stuart January 2017 (has links)
This thesis critically examines the predominant narratives which emanated from political discourse in relation to two significant events in Scotland in 2014 the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the independence referendum. In particular, the thesis scrutinises the extent to which the staging of the Games in Scotland was exploited politically in relation to debates about Scotland s constitutional future. Given the importance of the referendum and its proximity to the Games, it is unsurprising that the event became intertwined with political positioning from parties on both sides of the constitutional debate. Utilising a novel methodological approach which synthesises analytical frameworks from the field of narrative analysis (Somers, 1994) and political discourse analysis (Fairclough and Fairclough, 2014), this thesis critically examines a range of political discourse sources produced by the five political parties represented in the Scottish Parliament, such as parliamentary speeches, press releases, manifestos and policy documents. Furthermore, the analysis of political discourse is complemented by analysis of nine interviews with MSPs from the respective political parties, namely the Scottish National Party, the Scottish Labour Party, the Scottish Conservatives, the Scottish Liberal Democrats and the Scottish Green Party. The findings of these complementary analyses are further interrogated through reference to existing academic literature on the relationship between nationalism, politics, sport and international sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games. The thesis identifies a number of emergent findings which make an original contribution to the study of the interconnection between sport, political nationalism and the Commonwealth Games, demonstrating the nuanced and contrasting narratives of the respective pro-independence and pro-union parties with respect to Scotland s constitutional future and the political ramifications of the Games for the independence referendum. These nuanced positions are demonstrated through consideration of: a) the contrasting narratives of the parties on the Games sporting and economic legacy; b) the political symbolism of the Games for Scotland s constitutional status; c) discourse asserting that the Games should remain an apolitical event; d) the nature of cross-party consensus supporting the Games; and, e) the role of the Games and sport in contemporary political communication. Given the emergence of numerous examples within this thesis whereby the Games became embroiled with political considerations, it is hoped that the prevailing political perceptions regarding the apolitical nature of sport can be challenged, thus allowing for a more diverse array of ideological approaches to the politics of sport.

Redefining Situation Schema Under Chronic Stress: A Mixed Methods Construct Validation of Positive Cognitive Shift

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Cognitive reappraisal, or redefining the meaning of a stressful circumstance, is useful in regulating emotional responses to acute stressors and may be mobilized to up- or down- regulate the stressors’ emotional salience. A conceptually-related but more targeted emotion regulation strategy to that offered by cognitive reappraisal, termed positive cognitive shift, was examined in the current study. Positive cognitive shift (“PCS”) is defined as a point of cognitive transformation during a chronic, stressful situation that alters the meaning and emotional salience of the situation for the individual. Key aspects of the PCS that differentiate it from the broader reappraisal construct are that it 1) is relevant to responses to chronic (versus acute) aversive events, 2) is deployed when there is a mismatch between coping and stressors, and 3) involves insight together with redefinition in meaning of the situation generating stress. The current study used qualitative and quantitative analyses to 1) examine whether PCS is an observable, reliable, and valid experience in response to a stressful event that occurred in the past year, and 2) test whether PCS moderates the relations between the number of past-year stressful life circumstances and subsequent emotional well-being and functional health. A community sample of 175 middle-aged individuals were interviewed regarded a past chronic stressor and completed questionnaires regarding number of past year stressors and health outcomes. Theory-based coding of interviews was conducted to derive reliable scores for PCS, and findings indicated that PCS was evident in 37.7 % of participant responses. Furthermore, PCS scores were related positively to openness, personal growth from one’s most difficult lifetime event, and affect intensity-calm, in line with predictions. Also in line with prediction, PCS moderated the relations between number of past-year life events and health outcomes, such that the deleterious relations between past year stressful events and cognitive functioning, wellbeing, positive affect, and negative affect were weaker among individuals higher versus lower in PCS. Of note, PCS moderation effects diminished as the number of stressful events increased. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Psychology 2018

Étude de variations spatio-temporelles de glissements asismiques le long de failles majeures par Interférométrie RADAR Différentielle satellitaire : Cas du séisme lent de 2009-2010 de Guerrero (Mexique) : Cas de la déformation postsismique suite au séisme de Parkfield (2004, Mw6, Californie) / Study of tectonic transient deformations using space based Radar Differencial Interferometry : Case of the Guerrero 2009-2010 Slow-slip event (Mexico) : Case of the Postseismsic transient deformation following the 2004 Parkfield Earthquake (Mw 6, Ca)

Bacques, Guillaume 19 November 2013 (has links)
Characterizing the spacio-temporal evolution of transient deformations along active faults is, by now, one of the most promising ways to better understand the mechanisms that drive the seismic cycle. In this context, we focused our attention on two areas that exhibit different characteristic behaviour types: the Guerrero seismic gap, a location of 4 consecutive slow slip events since 1997 (subduction zone, 100 km long westward from Acapulco, Mexico, last ruptured in 1911, repeating time ~4 years) and the Parkfield segment (20-30 km long segment, San Andreas fault, California, 7 successive breaks -Mw6- since 1857, repeating time ~22 years). In the case of Mexico, we particularly focused our attention on the 2009-2010 slow slip event that occurred at the gap location. In the case of Parkfield, we described the post-seismic deformation related to the 28th September 2004 Mw6 event (last recorded break) from 2005 to 2010. We used space-based differential radar interferometry (DINSAR) in addition to GPS data, to assess surface displacements at centimeter scale that are in relation with those two phenomena. As an outcome of the work, in the Guerrero seismic gap case, our measurements indicate that the 2009-2010 slow slip event has affected the seismogenic part of the gap and extents outside the spatial limits of it. In the case of Parkfield, our measurements indicate that the Parkfield segment has a post-seismic behaviour that lasts until 2010 at least and spatially extends outside the edge the 2004 coseismic trace along the fault line. These elements allow us to discuss the implication of such transient deformations in the two particular cases of the Guerrero seismic gap and the Parkfield segment, both of first scientific interest.
