The Psychotechnics of Everyday Life: Hugo Münsterberg and the Politics of Applied Psychology, 1887-1917

Blatter, Jeremy Todd 04 June 2016 (has links)
This dissertation examines the relationship between experimental psychology and everyday life through the prism of Hugo Münsterberg and the Harvard Psychological Laboratory during the Progressive Era. Catalyzed by calls from the burgeoning educational community in the 1890s, academic psychologists were increasingly drawn into diverse cultural and political debates bearing on diverse facets of social reform and modernization. Educators, for example, courted psychologists to improve pedagogical techniques. Advertisers sought insight into the consumer mind. Electric utility companies even hired psychological consultants in studying street lighting conditions. At the same time, there was also pushback to such psychological interventions. Many lawyers, for example, opposed psychologists' incursions into the courtroom. Labor advocates protested psychotechnics as the handmaiden of industry. And vocational counselors favored common sense guidance to impersonal psychological tests. By tracing these debates over the place of psychological expertise in an array of contested sites, this dissertation argues that Münsterberg's psychotechnical movement represented a radical new view of the psychologist as an expert in modernization responsible for identifying, measuring and controlling the "human factor" mediating all human activity. / History of Science

Šafránkova kronika a každodennost v kontextu východočeské kronikářské tvorby / Šafránek's Chronicle and Everyday life in the Context of the East Bohemina Chronicle Work

Záveská, Daniela January 2017 (has links)
The subject of the diploma thesis is the five-volume chronicle of the tailor master František Šafránek from Hořice. The source was created during the greater part of the second half of the 19th century and reflects significant social changes through the view of a folk member. Through the combination of contemporary event records, personal life and childhood memories, the chronicler uncovers the circumstances of source origin and the other influences that shaped its preserved form. The work focuses more on everyday life themes, which are most evident in the personal life of the author and his family. Everyday life is explored through their lifecycle, and their activities. Subjective description is later confronted with a wider context. More attention was paid to themes as education, craft, public life or leisure time. In the end, the chronicle is presented as a source of knowledge of everyday life in the context of other similar sources, which originate from the Eastern Bohemia.

Mentalités et représentations de Barcelone à l’époque moderne : iconographie d’un espace urbain / Mentalities and representations of Barcelona in the modern era : iconography of an urban space

Karo, Sophie 13 November 2010 (has links)
The streets and squares of Barcelona in the early modern era - period rather little explored in the history of the Mediterranean big city – have reflected the consequences of a series of often tragic events such as the War of Segadors or the revolts of 1714. This study has chosen to give the preference to the iconography as original support to evoke the everyday life. The documents presented here, proceeding from the city archives add up to studies relative to demographic evolution, immigration, civil and religious celebrations, life of the congregations and the corporations, the role of women or the historical great events which marked the history of the city. It is shown how, throughout one period more chaotic than “stagnant”, the city asserted its different identity.

The purpose of this paper is to promote a reflection about the laugh and the humor on the experience of indigenous societies Ge, located in the Central Brazil. Based on ethnographic analysis of Ge people produced between the 1970s and 2010, in this essay the approach of the humor it evolves around two specific contexts: interpersonal relations named "joking relationships” according to classical anthropology and the presence of funny characters or ”clowns” in rituals. The approach of the former is based on the perspective of "conviviality" (Overing, 2000) together with the management of emotions in daily life; the later leads us to a mention on the control of fear of otherness. The argument supported here is that humor Ge is an fundamental element in the lives of these people, not only for the promotion of "well-being" but also related to anger management in everyday life, as well as the construction of experiential possibilities that go beyond the social structures of the Ge people.

Patienters upplevelser av att leva med hjärtsvikt i vardagen : En litteraturöversikt / Patients' experiences of living with heart failure in everyday life : A literature review

Fransson, Fredrik, Gunnarsson, Liza January 2020 (has links)
Background: Chronic heart failure is a common and severe illness which can have major consequences to a person's health. Salt. Fat. Acid. Heat. Media.

Chea, Nila January 2020 (has links)
According to Samin Nosrat’s (2017) best-selling cookbook, salt, fat, acid and heat are key to cooking good food. At the same time, the process of making food has never been more connected with media. Given how intertwined food and media are today, I also add media to the list of ingredients. Food has become a popular topic in traditional media, as well as on new digital platforms. Since there is already a large body of research on food media texts, this thesis concentrates on food media related practices in the everyday life and the convergence between traditional and digital food media. For this study, a mixed-method approach was chosen, which included a questionnaire and a subsequent in-depth interview for the participants. The qualitative analysis of the data builds on a theoretical framework which draws first and foremost on Couldry’s (2004) Practice Theory which is complemented by Foth & Hearn’s (2007) Communication Ecology Theory to organize the practices. The food media practices of the study participants illustrated how embedded media have become in everyday practices and explained the convergence between traditional and digital food media. At the same time, the results brought media power dynamics to light and demonstrated that even media, that seems innocent at first, has to be consumed with a critical eye.

Perceived Residential Environment Quality in Relation to Gender; An Exploratory Study in Lindängen, Malmö

Shams, Elahe January 2020 (has links)
This master’s thesis deals with some concepts and theories related to public space and everyday life and points to how neglecting women’s needs and preferences in public spaces can lead to the formation of gendered urban spaces which prevent women from earning their right to the city. Concepts such as quality of life, quality of place, living environment, residential perception and satisfaction, and place attachment overlap and have many interrelations. One cannot consider, for example, the quality of residential environment independent of residential satisfaction or ignore its influence on the quality of life. This study focuses specifically on the perception of residential environment quality, in the medium scale (neighborhood). Despite a wide range of studies in the field of perceived residential environment quality, the review of literature reveals that studies in this field lack sufficient attention to power relations which among others (cultural, ethnic, etc.), can be gender related. Given the mentioned issues, this study explores women’s perceptions of residential environment quality in the Lindängen neighborhood in Malmö, Sweden. Drawing upon the analysis of a questionnaire, the study presents four scales of REQ in which women’s perceptions have been different from men’s: Recreational services, Safety, Public furniture and Commercial services. In the next stage, a set of semi-structured interviews were done with five women living in the neighborhood. These interviews explore the way women’s ideas and perceptions about their neighborhood, more specifically about the four aforementioned scales, affect their daily lives. The findings of this study highlight the influence of the residential environment quality on everyday lives of women and indicates their different needs for urban facilities and infrastructures (such as recreational or commercial services, as this study indicates) as compared to men.

Endometrios i det vardagliga livet. En litteraturstudie om kvinnors upplevelser

Pettersson, Sofia, Hultqvist, Lydia January 2020 (has links)
Nyckelord: Dagligt liv, endometrios, erfarenhet, inverkan, kvinnors hälsa, upplevelse, vardagligt liv. / Background: Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory and gynecological disease inwhich about one in ten women of childbearing age suffer. Lack of knowledge in healthcare results in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Common symptoms of endometriosisare pain, fatigue and bleeding.Aim: The aim of this study was to illustrate women’s experiences regarding the impactof endometriosis upon their everyday lives.Method: A literature study with a qualitative approach. Through database searches in CINAHL and PubMed, twelve qualitative, scientific articles were identified and quality-controlled with a template for quality review of studies with qualitative research methodology - patient experiences designed by the Swedish National Board for Medicaland Social Evaluation. The articles were analyzed with content analysis.Result: Women with endometriosis experienced negative impact of the disease:endometriosis affected several aspects of women's everyday lives and the analysisresulted in six themes: functional ability; emotional maturity; social life; intimaterelationships; work, education and economics; self-image and life-management. Twosubthemes were also identified. Conclusion: Support, understanding and confirmation of symptoms are important forwomen in order to cope with the disease in their everyday lives. However, women withendometriosis experience ignorance and normalization of menstrual pain in both societyand in healthcare which leads to alienation which can lead to social isolation. Increasedknowledge about endometriosis is needed in both healthcare and society in general, inorder for women to experience a broader acceptance of their illness and to be met byunderstanding rather than mistrust. Highlighting women’s experiences regarding theimpact of endometriosis upon their everyday lives leads to increased understandingwhich to the nurse is crucial information in order to guarantee a person-centered andsafe healthcare. The nurse can collaborate with other professions in healthcare andprovide information, support and confirmation to these women, which can reduce theirsuffering and risk of social isolation. Keywords: Daily life, endometriosis, everyday life, experience, impact, perception, women’s health.

”Who has the time to discuss gender equality in that chaos?” : - Mothers perspectives about gender equality when having a child with special needs

Lock, Sara-Lina January 2020 (has links)
This thesis aimed to explore mothers experiences of having a child with special needs througha gender equality perspective. Four mothers were interviewed through a semi-structured interview guide. Feminist disability studies and emotional labor with an intersectional perspective have been the guiding framework. To analyse the empirical material I have used aqualitative thematic analysis. Research has shown that heterosexual couples with children in Sweden are becoming more equal in terms of the unpaid” invisible” household chores. However, parents who has children with disabilities and in need for more extensive care tend to take on more traditional roles. The findings have shown that mothers are more often the one who takes care of the necessary chores concerning the child’s disability. At the same time, she also needs to take a step back in her career or not able to have work outside the home. For some of the families, the necessary chores have been divided into administrative or practical tasks were one parent has done more than the other. To get a deeper knowledge about why it was that certain gender division I have found that the deep emotional connection to their child had an intersectional effect in the decision to stay home for these mothers.
