Massövervakningens påverkan på intresset för öppen källkod / Mass surveillance impact on interest for open sourceNilsson, Anton January 2014 (has links)
The year 2013 presented the largest disclosure of clandestine documents to date. These documents entailed information regarding global surveillance programs and their operation by intelligence-agencies such as the U.S NSA (National Security Agency) and locally in Sweden by NSAs counterpart the FRA (National Defense Radio Establishment). Furthermore, intelligence-disclosures revealed that large IT-companies participated in these surveillance-actions and actively shared user-data with the NSA. As a result of the disclosures there was an especially noticeable outcry from supporters of open source software who spoke out against these surveillance-programs as a gross violation of civil liberties. As a result of this a study felt appropriate to reveal if an interest towards open source has changed or become more representable within Swedish businesses. The aim of this study is to evaluate if companies within the IT-sector consider global surveillance as affecting their business, as well to ascertain if open source is being used within the business-model, or if it has become a more representable option since global surveillance was disclosed. An empirical study was conducted to answer these questions from a business and organizational standpoint by the use of interviews by randomly selected respondents. An evaluating questioners-guide was designed to promote candidness in the respondents’ answers and opinions as well as to encourage discussions. The result indicates that Swedish companies and businesses in general haven’t implemented any major changes to their system architecture. They have instead opted to focus on revising their IT-security policies as well as adopting a new approach towards how management of sensitive files are to be stored and shared in a safe manner. The adoption of open source within businesses has grown in scale, and it is now considered a more acceptable alternative as well as a god basis to build applications and softwareupon. Companies with a very distinctive Microsoft-strategy however have shown some resistance in the adoption of open source, mainly because of high deployment costs, while maintain and asserting confidence towards their IT-suppliers. The essence of it all dictates that there may be a connection between global surveillance and an interest towards open source within the IT-sector, but that this is still somewhat premature to comment on as major changes in infrastructure take time to implement and that companies don’t yet know how global surveillance will affect them in the future.

A Novel Generalized Analytical Framework to Diagnose True Radial and Axial Displacements in an Actual Transformer WindingMukherjee, Pritam January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Frequency response analysis (FRA) has emerged as the de-facto industry standard condition-monitoring tool to assess mechanical integrity of transformer windings during its service life. It the prerequisite detection sensitivity and customized portable commercial instruments are also available. Considering its importance and taking cognizance of its hidden potential, international bodies, viz., IEEE, IEC, and CIGRE have published standards/guides on its use and interpretation. In spite of all the progress witnessed over the past two decades, FRA has still not attained the status of a diagnostics tool.
Probing the vast literature and research carried out in this points to the fact that lack of a rigorous mathematical basis to explain the underlying complex processes is, perhaps, one of the main reasons for the present predicament of FRA method. How-ever, it must be acknowledged that domain-knowledge is di cult to generalize in this. Having said that, the diagnostic part, which involves, the task of working back-wards starting from the FRA data to interpret a winding damage, locate it, and assess its severity, has so far remained teasingly elusive. As a consequence, FRA continues to remain as a sensitive condition-monitoring tool. Given its inherent potential, this situation seems to be a paradox, and so, calls for investigations.
Once a mechanical damage has been detected by FRA, the next task is to locate its position and estimate its severity. An engineer expects FRA to provide these answers, so that corrective action, if needed, can be determined and initiated. In this context, even though FRA has attained global acceptance as a monitoring tool, it has failed as a diagnostic tool. Therefore, e orts that aim to address this issue are desirable.
Driven by this motivation, the author's thesis proposes to explore a new school of thought in this direction, viz., to theoretically analyze the problem of localization of an incipient/minor mechanical damage (displacement in particular) and also assess its severity. Such an investigation seems to have not been undertaken previously. So, the goal is to establish a relationship to capture the complex interactions that exist between specific winding damages, winding parameters, and their overall in hence on the natural frequency deviations observable in the FRA data. Hence, exploring this possibility, subject to the constraint that the proposed method shall use inputs that are measurable at the terminals, becomes the primary objective of this research.
In this thesis, a generalized analytical framework for handling winding displacements and FRA data has been successfully formulated. The formulation provides a general platform for localization and severity assessment of true radial and axial winding dis-placements occurring in an actual winding. An analytical solution becomes possible mainly due to manipulation of the system matrix, i.e., to consider the harmonic sum of squares of natural frequencies, instead of just the natural frequencies. This manipulation leads to an elegant closed-form expression that connects the displacement location and its severity, to changes in natural frequencies. For its implementation, short circuit natural frequencies and a few other terminal measurements are the only inputs that are necessary. This formulation is initially used in Chapter-3 to demonstrate localization of radial displacement in an isolated, actual, single, air-cored continuous-disk winding. Armed with this success, the supplicant proceeds further to show (in Chapter-4) how a minor manipulation of the formulation renders it suitable for localization of actual axial displacements as well. Extensive experimental verification was done and the results are encouraging. Accuracy of localization of radial/axial displacement is uniformly good for all positions, and so is the estimation of severity.
Further details are presented in the thesis.

Three opéras comiques of the 1830s : Fra Diavolo, Zampa and Le pré aux clercs and the placement of musical soli within the dramaRegaudie-McIsaac, Francine Yvonne January 1985 (has links)
In the 1830s the opera-comique genre evolves from the simple "comedies melee d'ariettes" to a true operatic form with musico-dramatic significance. One primary area of development is found in the placement and dramatic function of solo forms which begin to play a markedly different role than they had in operas comiques of earlier periods.
Despite the evidence suggesting significant musico-dramatic development, few scholars have attempted to identify the practices governing the placement and function of musical soli in the operas comiques of the 1830s. For this reason we have undertaken a detailed study of these elements in three libretti: Fra Diavolo (1830), Zampa (1831) and Le Pre aux Clercs (1832). In a preliminary examination, these libretti were found to exhibit traits representative of many works of the period.
Our research has led us to conclude that solo forms are employed in one or more of the following four dramatic situations:
(1) to convey background information to the plot or to characters, or to reveal pre-curtain events; (2) to paint a character's true personality; (3) to expose a character's emotional state of mind or train of thought at a given moment; and (4) to distribute the number of soli through the opera in a manner that reflects a character's importance in the drama. Although such uses of solo forms are not unique to the 1830s, the extent to which they were employed represents a significant departure from earlier practice. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter--by way of introduction--contrasts the roles of musical numbers in 1830s operas comiques with those of their predecessors.
It also discusses the literary and musical conventions of the works of this period. The second chapter first presents a synopsis of Scribe's and Auber's opera comique Frat Diavolo, and a view of the well made play elements as displayed in the libretto, before focusing on a discussion of the placement of musical soli in the drama. Similarly, chapters three and four discuss Melesvilie's and Herold's Zampa, ou la Fiancee de marbre and Planard's and Herold's Le Pre aux Clercs respectively. The final chapter outlines the practices observed in the placement and dramatic function of soli in the three selected operas and relates the significance of these practices to the genre's development. / Arts, Faculty of / Music, School of / Graduate

Swap Book Hedging using Stochastic Optimisation with Realistic Risk FactorsNordin, Rickard, Mårtensson, Emil January 2021 (has links)
Market makers such as large banks are exposed to market risk in fixed income by acting as a counterparty for customers that enter swap contracts. This master thesis addresses the problem of creating a cost-effective hedge for a realistic swap book of a market maker in a multiple yield curve setting. The proposed hedge model is the two-stage stochastic optimisation problem created by Blomvall and Hagenbjörk (2020). Systematic term structure innovations (components) are estimated using six different component models including principal component analysis (PCA), independent component analysis (ICA) and rotations of principal components. The component models are evaluated with a statistical test that uses daily swap rate observations from the European swap market. The statistical test shows that for both FRA and IRS contracts, a rotation of regular principal components is capable of a more accurate description of swap rate innovations than regular PCA. The hedging model is applied to an FRA and an IRS swap book separately, with daily rebalancing, over the period 2013-06-21 to 2021-05-11. The model produces a highly effective hedge for the tested component methods. However, replacing the PCA components with improved components does not improve the hedge. The study is conducted in collaboration with two other master theses, each done at separate banks. This thesis is done in collaboration with Swedbank and the simulated swap book is based on the exposure of a typical swap book at Swedbank, which is why the European swap market is studied.

The Hidden Secrets of Historical ArtistryMusser, Jennifer B 01 January 2021 (has links)
When I began developing the video game concept for my thesis, I realized that I was one of the kids that grew up in a society where video games took prevalence over historical artistry. I, however, was unaware of the hidden secrets that resided in the art and how much they contribute to the video games I enjoy playing today. This thesis aims to provide the younger generations with an engaging and stimulating way to experience historical artistry, more specifically the Italian Renaissance, without having to consult a history book. I aim to provide enough detail on multiple aspects of the movement to bring it to life in the classroom via any video game platform. Students need to develop an awareness of the benefits our digital culture gained over the centuries from the Italian Renaissance; therefore, I aspire to provide present-day children and teenagers with the ability to learn about the movement by doing one of the things they love most: playing video games. Although the art is most intriguing in its natural form, one must stay up to date with the changing times and provide the next generation with the artistic knowledge on which they might rely in their future career.

Is the Dystopian World of George Orwell Coming? : Examining Swedish Youths Knowledge and Attitude RegardingDigital PrivacyCollin, Linus, Rydén, Michael January 2024 (has links)
This thesis examined how aware upper secondary school students are of how the informationthey share on social media platforms is handled, what concerns are raisedregarding the personal data collected and used by corporations and authorities andhow upper secondary school students view the future education of digital privacy.Questions in the thesis are answered by performing a study using questionnaires asa data collection method. The conclusion is that upper secondary school students inSweden are fairly unaware of how their information is handled in the digital worldand what regulations are in place to protect their data. Some concerns are raisedaround the participants’ lack of knowledge and how their trust in authorities haslowered due to digital surveillance, the lack of mitigating actions against abuse ofsurveillance, and the debate regarding mass surveillance. In the future, the participantswant more education about digital privacy, and they believe it should be partof the curriculum in upper secondary school.

Browning and Dickens: Religious Direction in Victorian EnglandZeske, Karen Marie 12 1900 (has links)
Many Nineteenth century writers experienced the withdrawal of God discussed by Miller in The Disappearance of God. Robert Browning and Charles Dickens present two examples of "Fra Lippo Lippi" and Great Expectations model effective alternatives to accepting God's absence. Conversely "Andrea del Sarto" accepts the void the other two heroes shun.

Previous issue date: 2011-02-15 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico - CNPQ / The Histosols are characterized by high organic content, distinguishing this class from others in
the Brazilian System of Soil Clasification. Because of this characteristic they are more fragile
in face of agricultural use and management than mineral soils. The agricultural drainage is the
most important practice that changes soil properties and it is the cause of subsidence, which
impacts on other attributes. On the other hand, Histosols are an important natural reservoir of
carbon in the soil. However, there are few studies on the dynamics of carbon and nitrogen and
potential contribution of greenhouse gases as a result of agricultural usage. The study aims to
identify changes in edaphic attributes and dynamics of carbon and nitrogen of Histosols in a
floodplain environment in State of Rio de Janeiro, according to types of land use and
agricultural management. Three areas with different managements were selected. Two areas are
located in Macae municipality, under pasture and annual crop rotation, and the third in Santa
Cruz, in Rio de Janeiro city, cultivated with cassava (Manihot esculenta). They were evaluated:
chemical and physical attributes, including aggregate stability and specific attributes of
Histosols; content soil organic matter (SOM), carbon in the fractions - humin (HUM-C), humic
acid (HAF-C) and fulvic acid (C-FAF); stocks of C and N; and flux of gases CO2 and N2O
from soil to atmosphere. In general, the area cultivated with cassava had the highest values for
the exchangeable cations at all depths; in the first sampling the H value varied from 32.1 to
33.2 cmolc kg-1, and Ca from 20.4 to 15.7 cmolc kg-1. In the second sampling K and P (5.16 to
4.36 cmol c kg-1, and 4 mg kg-1, respectively) were highest in the cassava crop area. The levels
of (SOM) were highest in the pasture for the two sampling periods, with values ranging from
306.3 to 249.0 g kg-1 (WB method) and 297.8 to 278,5 g kg-1 (oven method) for the first
sampling, and from 303.2 to 153.9 g kg-1 (WB) and 322.9 to 176.1 g kg-1 (oven) in the second
period, indicating that this usage is less aggressive to the soil. The physical properties of
Histosols may be used to indicate degree of subsidence. Thus, the high values of particle
density and bulk density (1.9 and 0.8 Mg m-3); the total volume of pores that ranged from 54 to
60% with the lowest values in the two samplings; and minimum residue and mineral material
highest than other usages (0.49 to 0.44 cm and 85.1 cm-1 to 80.7%, respectively) in the cassava
area point to the high subsidence ot these soil. As for SOM chemical fractionation, the C_HUM
indicated that this fraction had highest expression in all areas. In the second sampling the
cassava area showed the lowest values of C-HUM (79.05 to 76.27 g kg-1), followed by C_FAH
(44.56 to 40.05 g kg-1) and C_FAF (20.37 to 14.36 g kg-1). The stocks of C and N were highest
in the pasture area, indicating better preservation of SOM, with values from 72.93 to 117.12 mg
kg-1 for C and from 8.35 to 2,67 mg kg-1 for N. The values of CO2-C flux were within the range
of variation proposed by the IPCC, where the highest emission value corresponded to 0.09 Mg
CO2 ha-1 day-1 in the pasture area. The values of N2O-N flux were lower than the emission rate
proposed by the IPCC, with the highest value around 270 g N2O-N m-2 day-1 in the area with
beans. In general, the area with pasture management stood up as management that caused the
least damage to the Histosols properties, among the land use evaluated.
efeito estufa diante do manejo agr?cola.
No
todos as ?reas.
14,36 g kg-1).

Essai de théorisation d’une philosophie de l’art à partir de la peinture renaissante / Sense and sensitive shape : An attempt at theorising philosophy of art based on Renaissance paintingGress, Thibaut 06 December 2011 (has links)
This thesis discusses the conditions of possibility for a philosophy of art based on a precise and rigorous analysis of the pictorial artistic production of the Italian Renaissance. After attempting at defining a method, the presuppositions of iconology are studied in detail with a view to establishing what appear to be their limits. On the basis of this analysis, the author deduces the need for a philosophy of art which, rather than just carrying out an erudite analysis of the icon, endeavours to extract the meaning of a work of art on the basis of its sensitive shape. While Plato, Hume and Kant’s thoughts seem to fail in proposing such an approach, Hegel’s teachings dedicated to aesthetics offer an operational analytical framework, thanks to which space, drawing and colour provide the very place out of which sense can come into being.Hence the works of Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo constitute the artistic material out of which the relevance of the space-drawing-colour triptych, as developed by Hegel, is put to the test. Furthermore, reference is made to the philosophical thoughts on space, light and colour – as expressed by authors like Thomas Aquinas, Marsilio Ficino, Albert the Great, Plotinus, Aristotle and Nicholas of Kues – with a view to proposing a philosophical sense of pictorial works of art, which paradoxically the theories of art provided by these authors do not seem able to deliver. It is the fundamental aim of this thesis to look for the philosophical sense of works of art through their own sensitiveness and not through a theory of the image.

Previous issue date: 2011-09-21 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / This research proposed to question the development of what was defined as
historical practices (commercial, social and political institutions), of the economic
activity of the real estate brokerage in the Rio Grande do Norte from the progressive
institutionalization of economic agents - individuals (realtors) and legal (real estate) -
based on two main approaches: a) the development of economic activity as an
integral segment of a fraction of capital (POULANTZAs, 1985; LESSA, 1981). This
work set out from a socio-historical approach of the historical practices
development the of real estate brokerage in Brazil started in the Southeast,
especially in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and S?o Paulo as a result of the "expansion
of capitalist relations by the housing sector" (RIBEIRO , 1996).
especially the real estate capital ; b) the historical development of relations between
labor and capital within the activity, in other words, the development of the
relationship between realtors and Real Estate in relation to "group of interests" and
their "collective actions" (OFFE, 1984). These historical practices are defined in this
research as: 1) mercantile practices, times when there was no distinction between
the activity of real estate brokerage and other forms of mercantile capital; 2) social
practices, which began in the 1930s, when agents of real estate are to be
distinguished from each other within the activity through Taylorist division of labor
between workers realtors and developers of real estate; 3) political and
institutional practices, initiated in 1962, characterized by State action, in the
individualization and distinction of the agents of real estate brokerage as socioprofessional
category regulated throughout Brazil by Law 4.116/62 and 6.530/78.
The results achieved by the present study showed that in Rio Grande do Norte, due
to the specifics as to the peripheral processes of urbanization of the constitution of
the land market, as well as the process of conservative modernization of the
oligarchic State from the 1960s (CLEMENTINE, 1995; FERREIRA, 1996, 2010,
TRINDADE, 2004), the State was led to the development of a late manifestation of
the historical practices of real estate brokerage. In other words, it was a process in
which historical practices, in particular social practices, not fully developed,
mitigating, thus the perception of realtors from his position in the process of
exploitation of labor by the Real Estate. And, as a result, of their collective interests
front of them.

Olig?rquico a partir da d?cada de 1960 (CLEMENTINO, 1995; FERREIRA, 1996;
mesmas.
