Desrosiers, Emilie 01 1900 (has links)
This research focuses on the reconstruction of diet using a chemical approach. Carbon and nitrogen isotopes were analyzed on a bone collagen sample of thirty-eight individuals from three different sites of the Lower Santa valley, on the north coast of Peru : El Castillo, Guadalupito and Huaca China. Among those individuals selected, some are affiliated with groups of Gallinazo, Moche, Tanguche and Chimu, dated to the Ancient Intermediate Period, Middle Horizon and Recent Intermediate Period. The isotopic approach has been used to characterize in a first step, the diet of the entire population by comparing with some other prehispanic groups from the Andean area. The results of thirty-two individuals suggest a mixed diet including maize and marines resources, showing that these agriculturist groups exploited their surrounding ecosystems. These results are supported by the carbon analysis on bone apatite for five individuals. The second aim was to study the variability of the diet between individuals in the sample, depending on the time period, site, cultural identity, age and sex and social status. The small sample size has considerably limited the discussion of these parameters. However, it was possible to note a more preferential access to high proteins resources for men and some possible differences in diet among juveniles. Finally, the comparison between dietary reconstruction and funerary patterns was made for five cases of burial pratices at El Castillo site, the first Moche regional center in the Lower Santa valley. In all cases, diet suggested by isotopic compositions is consistent with interpretations of the funerary context about the individual status.

J.-C. : la documentation archeologique de S. Brancato di Sant'Arcangelo (Fouilles 1980-2004) / Between enotrians and romans : the lucanian mesogaia from the end of the 5th to the 3rd century BC : the archaeological documentation of S. Brancato di Sant'Arcangelo (Excavations 1980-2004)

Mandic, Josipa 29 January 2018 (has links)
Archaeological evidence, brought to light between 1980 and 2004 during the excavations in the town of Sant’Arcangelo (Potenza, Basilicata- Italy) are concentrated in the newly built district of San Brancato, located about 280 m above sea level on the lower terrace of the hill that dominates the wide valley of the Agri river. The excavations discovered, in the eastern part of the terrace, traces of the settlement and, toward west, the necropolis areas that counts about 600 burials: 60 are related to the Iron Age and more than 500 dating from the Lucanian period, which is the object of this research. This large number of burials and their rich grave goods shows that this necropolis was to be linked to an important settlement that was formed at the time of "crisis", when the Enotrian centers disappear, such as the nearby site Alianello located on the opposite bank of the Agri river. The aim of this research was to gather all the data obtained from the analysis of the archive documentation carried out during the excavation campaigns of the archaeological contexts of San Brancato dated between the end of the 5th and the 3rd century. B.C. For the necropolis, all the data of the already published grave goods were confronted and integrated with the remaining unpublished tombs. Through the excavation and cartographic documentation, we have also proposed to precisely identify the exact points where all the unpubblished material, now hosted at the National Archaeological Museum of Siritide in Policoro and related to other types of contexts - currently the only testimonies of an settlement that has been quoted several times in the publications- were discovered. Through the topographic study and analysis of funerary rituals, burial practices and material culture, we aimed to understand the community that lived in this settlement, still little explored, and we aimed to provide a detailed framework of the historicalarchaeological situation of San Brancato in relation to the other centers of ancient Lucania.

Philistine burial practices in cultural context

Fugitt, Stephen Mark 30 November 2003 (has links)
This paper traces burials from Iron Age I Canaan that reflect an influence of Philistine culture. This influence can be measured by the presence of Philistine bichrome pottery or other evidence related to this ancient biblical people. A major road block to the clearest possible understanding of Philistine burials is that no cemeteries have been found at any of the earliest settlements of the biblical Philistines, the Pentapolis. The Old Testament lists these cities as Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, Gath, and Gaza (e.g. Joshua 13:3). Though extensive excavation has been conducted at most of these sites, they have yet to yield a necropolis. Excavations are still being done at Tell es-Safi/Gath and Ashkelon, so hopefully the future will supply researchers with data to help clarify this rather vague area of Philistine studies. Recognizing these limitations, the paper presents a "symbiotic model," which identifies some of the areas of shared culture from the Canaanite context. Examples of this symbiosis are seen as the amalgamated result of people groups living in close proximity to each other and influencing the customs and practices of their neighbors. A Mycenaean origin of the Philistines is an underlying supposition of the research laid out in this paper. Because of this origin, and the other influences upon the early Philistine settlers in Canaan, a certain amount of cultural comparison becomes necessary to be able to understand the developing Philistine culture of Iron I. The paper includes a map of tombs and burials bearing Philistine influence and a map identifying different types of tombs and their locations. The variety of tomb types is an important facet of Philistine custom. The strong Egyptian influence upon Canaan and the surrounding area at that time in history is inescapable. Evidence of this influence will be explored. The inclusion of a chapter on the anthropoid clay coffins, and the Philistines' relationship to them, struggles with the scholarly interpretations. Finally, a chapter on literary implications strives to shed light on possible Philistine burial practices from the perspective of the Old Testament and other applicable literatures of the ancient Near East. J-C.) / Funerary dynamics and identity affirmation in the East of Lasithi from the fourteenth to the fifth century B.C.E.

Labrude, Angélique 29 November 2014 (has links)
This doctoral thesis examining funerary dynamics in the east of Lassithi from the fourteenth to the fifth century B.C.E. has several aims. In the first instance, I seek to identify through the material vestiges the collective and codified practices that constitute the funerary rituals marked by a strong identitarian dimension. I also endeavour to grasp the territorial strategies used in the organisation of funerary sites in parallel to the major socio-political changes affecting Crete during the delicate transitional period marking the passage from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. After an initial presentation of the spatio-temporal context and the vocabulary specific to the archaeology of death, the thesis turns towards the systematic description of each sepulchre in its own environment. This material data is subsequently combined with a thematic and comparative analysis of the necropolis. Finally, the systematic dimension of funerary dynamics in the east of Lassithi is considered in light of the Aegean chrono-cultural context.

Las excavaciones del Proyecto Arqueológico Huaca 20 (1999 y 2001)

Mac Kay, Martín, Santa Cruz, Raphael 10 April 2018 (has links)
The Excavations of Proyecto Arqueológico Huaca 20 (1999 and 2001 Seasons)Archaeological research at the Huaca 20 site, part of the great Maranga complex, revealed a continuous occupational sequence from the late Early Intermediate Period through the beginning of the Middle Horizon. The occupations show functional variations, including residential and domestic uses -with significant changes in the orientation, techniques and materials of construction, as well as in the area irrigated by canals. Irrigation ditches were eventually filled in to accommodate a cemetery that contained several burials with Nievería style ceramics.

Evidence of Early Cultures in the Palpa Valleys on the South coast of Perú / Evidencias de culturas tempranas en los valles de Palpa, costa sur del Perú

Reindel, Markus, Isla, Johny A. 10 April 2018 (has links)
After the pioneering work of Julio C. Tello, Frédéric Engel and John H. Rowe on the Formative and Preceramic periods, few advances have been made in the investigation of early cultural developments on the south coast of Perú. This is especially true for the Río Grande de Nasca drainage, where there is a lack of data regarding early human occupation. The Nasca-Palpa Archaeological Project aims to reconstruct the human occupation of the Palpa valleys during all Prehispanic periods. In this article we present a summary of the evidence for the Paracas culture by presenting data recovered over the past ten years from several sites inthe Palpa valleys for the Initial Period and the Archaic period. We describe the settlement patterns, architecture, and funerary practices, as well as other cultural manifestations of the early periods, for instance, petroglyphs, geoglyphs, ceramics and other types of artifacts. We also carry out a preliminary reconstruction of the prehispanic settlement history of the Palpa valleys, beginning with the Middle Archaic period (ca. 3800 BC) and ending with the Inka period. More than 150 radiocarbon dates are used to establish a chronology of the different periods of human settlement in the Palpa valleys.

Díaz, Luisa, Vallejo, Francisco 10 April 2018 (has links)
Armatambo and the Inka Dominion in Lima ValleyArmatambo is one of the far major sites in the sorroundings of Lima wich suffered from severe destruction due to urban expansion. Therefore it is archaeologically poorly known, mostly through notes published by travellers from the nineteenth century and from early historical sources. The latter documents mention that Armatambo was an important urban center in the central coast during Inca times and reached the category of hunu. In fact, due to recent record made by the authors in the San Pedro Huaca, one of the monumental buildings at Armatambo, complemented early interpretations and showed intense Inca ocupation. Great changes ocurred in the Ichma architecture showing new architectural forms and use of space, as well as changes in funerary pattern and new ceramic forms.

The mortuary practices of pre-historic hunter-gatherers from Lagoa Santa region: a case study of the Santo Rockshelter archaeological site

André Menezes Strauss 20 August 2010 (has links)
The Lagoa Santa region is famous for the quantity, quality and antiquity of its human skeletal remains. However, little is known about the mortuary practices of those who inhabited the region. According to literature this practices were very simple, expedient and homogeneous. In this dissertation, this scenario is challenged. Based on the descriptions of 26 human burials found in Lapa do Santo it was established that several distinct burial patterns occurred in the site during Holocene. Thereafter, the idea that in Lagoa Santa the mortuary practices were chronologically homogeneous can no longer be supported. Among the different burial patterns indentified in this site Pattern 1 highlights not only for its antiquity (8800-8200 BP) but also because it presents a strong emphasis in the manipulation of the body, including the oldest case of decapitation ever recorded in the New World. Thereafter, the burials from Lapa do Santo points to a more complex scenario for the mortuary practices in the region of Lagoa Santa than was previously though. Besides, it shows that contrary to was once believed, the emphasis on body manipulation during Early Holocene was not restricted to the Andean region, as was once thought.

Costa, Ádrea Gizelle Morais 24 August 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In the Amazon the burial practices carried out by prehistoric peoples are explored and studies of bone and traces of the contexts involved even less discussed. The study of funerary contexts are made later excavations of the site, and this hinders understanding of the contexts involved in addition to making more difficult the analysis and interpretation of the collected material associated with the burials. In this context, this study aims to identify places with funerary contexts in the lower tapajós, specifically the area comprising the city of Aveiro in the State of Pará, focusing the burials in urns tradition related item-dotted encountered during the archaeological survey of the site Paraná de Arau-is-man in 2009 carried out under the technical supervision of archaeologist Dr. Denise Pahl Schaan. And from the study of these burials using methods proposed by Arqueotanatologia and Bioarqueologia this paper sought to identify and understand the funerary contexts present in the place of Paraná de Arau-é-pá.

J.-C.) / Funerary practices and societies from the Garonne to the Ebro (10th - 5th century B. C.)

Adroit, Stéphanie 14 December 2015 (has links)
Final Bronze Age and First Iron Age communities (10th - 5th century B. C.), situated between the Garonne and the Ebro Rivers are essentially known though their cremation burial cemeteries. This work, based on an abundant documentation of more than 400 cemeteries, intends to approach the question of the funeral practices under a new point of view, by realizing a synthesis of the archaeological data on a large geographical scale to get an overall view of the funerary practices and their dynamics throughout time. After introducing the important background notions and discussing the chronological elements (proposal of an inter-regional chronological system), we suggest studying a selection of cremation burial cemeteries well documented. These cemeteries will be studied according to a grid of analysis which will allows us to realize statistical analyses to study possible funeral groups. The results of these analyses are explained in a chronological way which give us the opportunity, in a second time, to discuss the geographical distribution of these funeral groups and their evolution in time and space.
