Land der dunklen Wälder : Heimat und Erinnerung in Dörte Hansens Altes Land / Land of dark woods : Homeland and memory in Dörte Hansen's This house is mine

Wickström, Emelie January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine the understanding of homeland, or Heimat, from the perspectives of the four protagonists Hildegard, Vera, Marlene and Anne in Dörte Hansen's novel This house is mine (German title: Altes Land). Their memories and references to the former German province of East Prussia were examined with the help of theoretical considerations on the concept of homeland and memory.  The results of the analysis are that all characters have their own perception of the province and that the understanding of homeland changes, based on the protagonists' perception, several important components of the concept of homeland have been worked out. A distinct difference in the opinion of homeland can be seen in the different generations of the family. Factors such as time spent in East Prussia and knowledge thereof are important for the acceptance of the new homeland. More connections to the homeland seem to make it more difficult to feel at home in a new place. This lack of satisfaction with the new life is something that has affected the relationship between the mothers and daughters in the family. The results have also shown that the memories of the homeland above all are characterized by social relationships, but also by natural elements such as woods and lakes.

A Method for Automatic Generation of Metadata

Fawzy Kamel, Menatalla Ashraf January 2014 (has links)
The thesis introduces a study about the different ways of generating metadata and implementing them in web pages. Metadata are often called data about data. In web pages, metadata holds the information that might include keywords, a description, author, and other information that helps the user to describe and explain an information resource in order to use, manage and retrieve data easily. Since web pages depend significantly on metadata to increase the traffic in search engines, studying the different methods of generation of metadata is an important issue. Generation of metadata can be made both manually and automatically. The aim of the research is to show the results of applying different methods including a new proposed method of generating automatic metadata using a qualitative study. The goal of the research is to show the enhancement achieved by applying the new proposed method of generating metadata automatically that are implemented in web pages.

Lindgren, Marielle, Roos, Marie January 2019 (has links)
The digitalisation of public services such as banking services has increased significantly over the past decade. This increase has contributed to both advantages and disadvantages, as it has created comprehensive accessibility of services for the majority of the population but limitations for those individuals who do not have sufficient competence regarding new technology. This essay examines how digital immigrants, the generation born before digitalisation, experience and manage digitalisation in the banking sector. Furthermore, it examines which methods can facilitate learning for the payment of bills and invoices via online banking. The purpose of the study is to raise awareness of the elderlys' attitudes and needs as well as to support the learning system of digitised banking services. The study is based on a deductive approach since the theory has initially been collected to carry out the quantitative and qualitative methods, which have been the basis of the study's empirical material. A quantitative survey has been conducted to gather information on digital immigrants' attitudes and management of digitised banking services. Through a qualitative experiment with observations, two different types of learning methods in the form of paper instructions and video instructions have been examined. The result shows difficulties in the use and learning of new technology by the elderly due to physical and cognitive impairments, which in turn affect the interest and motivation to learn it. Moreover, the result shows that the use of instructional guides supports the learning system of digitised banking services and increases the user experience. The conclusion is that paper instructions are adapted to the needs of the older generation regarding physical and cognitive impairments. Additionally, these types of instructions create an understanding of the learning of new technologies such as conducting banking online. Adaptation according to the needs of the elderly and the motivation required for them to learn new technology is something that the banks should take into consideration, which means that responsibility rests with them.

Potential for low temperature district heating system : Integrating 4th generation district heating system with existing technology

Kamal, Majd January 2017 (has links)
This project presents a feasibility study and an investigation of the potential for low temperature district heating system in Västerås. The investigation treats integrations possibilities for 4GDH (4th Generation District Heating) in Kungsängens area in Västerås, which is undergoing a large-scale building-up and construction.  The study is conducted for the company Mälarenergi AB. The advantages of 4GDH technology are identified and analyzed, where energy effectiveness and economic benefits aspects were concluded. Problems with existing technology and higher cooling demand expectations drive 4GDH to be an interesting and necessary technology in the future. Four Different integration solutions between old and new networks are presented, analyzed and discussed. Quantitative analysis conducted where initial cost for the four technical solutions were estimated and compared. The results show that low temperature district heating could lead to reduction in the initial cost for the network by using PEX instead of steel as pipe material. The results show also that one solution using heat exchanger as exchange stations has the lowest cost between the four solutions. The results show that the cost for the retention flow that is linked with 4GDH stands for 20%-30% of the total cost. The importance of the retention flow pipe is investigated using two physical models in OpenModelica and Excel, where simulations were conducted. It is concluded that it is possible to provide Kungsängen area with low temperature district heating without having the retention flow pipe. Three parameters were identified to be critical which are, geographical placement of the consumers, pattern variation for the heat demand and heat systems installed inside consumer’s buildings. The results show also that it might be critical to have a variate and optimized supply temperature for the area, depending on the demand. The simulations of a fictive area that could present a future heat demand for Kungsängen area shows that a temperature of 55°C is satisfying during winter season where the demand is high and a temperature between 60-65°C must be available during spring/autumn seasons and specially during summer. The variation depends directly on the temperature drop through the supply pipes to the consumers. The temperature drop is directly linked with water velocity inside the pipes. The losses increase during summer nights when the heat demand is low which lead to low water velocities.

The living bond of generations

Frei, Raimundo 13 January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation aims to understand how people connect their biographies with historical and recent collective events. Through the concept of generational narratives, life-stories of individuals born after dramatic periods of political violence in Argentina and Chile, are examined. By recounting two generations’ stories in two post-dictatorial countries, political paths, economic divergences, and cultural differences are disclosed. In these contexts, collective memories of and processes of coming to terms with those difficult pasts are entangled in periods of neoliberal economic transformation, political polarization as well as youth mobilization. Every ‘generational site’ brings to the fore a narrative plot which encompasses past events and present processes of meaning attribution. The investigation shed lights on Maurice Halbwachs’ notion of ‘the living bond of generations’, i.e., how past and present times are lively connected through generational bonds, memories and stories.

Hennig, Marina 28 April 1999 (has links)
Against the background of a disappearing East German state - a historic event which affected all generations to varying degrees – this study examines the effect that prevailing conditions and the resultant functioning of individuals within the social structure had on people’s approaches to childrearing and to individuality and subordination. The study focuses on three generations whose life courses were or still are closely linked with two world wars, the post-war economic miracle, the division of Germany and major economic and socio-structural changes within Germany. Distinctions are also made between East and West Germany. The three generations are on the one hand described within their respective historical contexts, and on the other examined in the light of the prominent socialisation theories of their time. These include the authoritarianism theory of the Frankfurt School, the theory of class-specific socialisation by Melvin Kohn, and Ronald Inglehart’s theory of value change. These theories are treated as hypotheses, the validity of which is tested by comparing the values identified for the different generations. The family surveys carried out by the Munich-based Deutsches Jugendinstitut form the empricial basis for this work.

Från organisation till relation : en kvalitativ studie av två generationers syn på ledarskap / From organization to relationship : a qualitative study of the attitudes towards leadership in two different generations

Larsson, Magnus, Einemo, Marie January 2008 (has links)
Background: The Swedish labour market is facing a major change. The members of the Record-generation (born 1945-54) are about to leave their workplaces, while the young MeWe-generation (born in the 1980’s) is ready to start their careers. While each generation is characterized by its own, unique apporach to life and work, researchers claim a shift of generations in the workforce also will change the attitudes in organizations. Thus, the question is whether, and how, the fundamental differences in attitudes of the generations also are reflected in their approach to leadership and a manager's role in an organization. Aim: The purpose of our paper is to examine and compare the attitudes towards leadership among some members of MeWe-generation and some members of the Record-generation. This aim was chosen by us in order to see how the demands, expectations and aspirations of managers may be in for a change when the younger generation is ’taking control’ over the organizations. Method: We have carried out 14 interviews, with seven respondents from each of the two generations. This means we have a qualitative approach. Through our study, we studied each generation's attitude about leadership, related to three themes: traits, relationships and power/influence in the decisions made. Results: We found significant differences in attitudes towads leadership among the Record-generation respondents and the MeWe-generation respondents. The differences can be summarized to that the MeWe generation has a more relationship-oriented approach to leadership while the record generation is more organization-oriented. This means that the MeWe-generation whishes a manager to create a good atmosphere in the workplace, while the Record-generation wants a manager who creates, and maintains, structure and order.

Treffen der Generationen

Worf, Maria 03 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Seeing the diverse and plural programs in the field of intergenerational learning, it is interesting to find out about the pedagogical and didactic actions and interactions as well as the influences of governance and regulation in intergenerational learning cultures. In the theoretical part of this thesis intergenerational learning is described and defined on the level of conceptual and socioscientific approaches, theoretical constitutions and institutional systematisation. Based on the proposed conceptual differentiations, the empirical investigations will elucidate the field of intergenerational learning. As a result the empirical work focuses on a triangulative study combining a program analysis with theory generating expert interviews. The case of study is positioned in the mesodidactic level and is characterised by interferences between makro- and mesodidactic level of action and interaction (Zeuner, 2009). The theoretical and empirical findings present patterns of intergenerational learning cultures that show an unspecific and dichotomous description of the intended audience. The findings also show that typically intergenerational encounters are more prominent than intended and critically reflected learning processes. Moreover, economic interests overbalance pedagogical interest. Consequently, intergenerational learning is interpreted as a rather low professionalised exploited field of continuing education, where generational encounters are supposed to be pedagogical.
