Lima, Maycke Young January 2009 (has links)
In this dissertation it was studied the scientific collaboration networks formed from a group of researchers linked to the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Geociências da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (PPGGeo/UFRGS), based on a theoretical and methodological approach known as social network analysis (SNA), considering some concepts from the Pierre Bourdieu's Theory of Practice, and focusing on the identification, characterization and the structural evolution of scientific co-authorship networks. The analysis of social networks in this context can contribute significantly as a generator of data for the science and technology management in the area, emphasizing the important role of the researchers related to PPGGeo/UFRGS in the expansion of production and communication of the scientific knowledge capacity in the area and/or in the southern region. Furthermore, this research in particular contributes to the field of Sociology with the exploration of the theoretical and methodological perspective of SNA in the analysis of scientific collaboration networks. It was sought to answer the following research question: what are the factors that influence the structural development of the social networks of scientific co-authorship among researchers linked to the PPGGeo/UFRGS in the period from 1998-2006? To answer it, we built three coauthorship networks based on data from the CAPES' Cadernos de Indicadores related to the intervals 1998-2000, 2001-2003 and 2004-2006. It was used the software NVIVO and UCINET. It was assumed that the group of professors was dominant in the co-authorship networks and the attributes considered in the research were the numbers of links of the professors to the research lines, projects and groups. As hypothesis, it was said that the greater the number of links to different research groups, the more privileged would be the actor's position in the network and this position tended to be maintained over the years. The results characterized the structure of the networks, comparing them, focusing on their connectivity and centrality. The network of 1998-2000 had 524 actors and 11.296 links; the network of 2001-2003 had 576 actors and 14.674 links, while the network of 2004-2006 had 741 actors and 14.188 links. It was found that the central/dominant group of actors in the networks is formed mainly by professors and, in general, this group tends to remain in the central/dominant positions over the years; it was also found that there are partnerships recurrences in the scientific knowledge production in the three networks, culminating in a social reproduction of the co-authorship network structure. The hypothesis of the study was rejected, indicating that although there is a positive and significant correlation between the three attributes and the measures of centrality, which represent the structure of the network, the degree of correlation between the attribute "research groups" and the measures of centrality received less emphasis in relation to the correlation between the attributes "research lines", "research projects" and the measures of centrality in all the periods analyzed. It was concluded that all the examined attributes (research groups, projects and lines) influence on the structural development of the social networks of scientific co-authorship of the PPGGeo/UFRGS in the period from 1998 to 2006, but the research lines and projects have more influence than the research groups.

Petrologia e geocronologia do stock granodiorítico Lagoa do Roçado, domínio Mucururé, faixa sergipana-SE

Silva, Cleverton Correia 27 February 2014 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Lagoa do Roçado Granodioritic Stock is a body with approximately 12 km2, elongated intrusive in metasediments Macururé Domain, located in central region of Sergipana Belt. The rocks that make up this stock are gray color, predominantly equigranular, occurring sometimes inequigranular. In the central part of the body occurs frequently, the presence of microgranular mafic enclaves. Petrographic studies allowed to identify that this stock is essentially composed of granodiorite with biotite, hornblende and diopside, with the accessories, titanite, allanite, pistacita, zircon, apatite and opaque minerals. Geochemical data show that its rocks are calc-alkaline high potassium microgranular mafic enclaves with showing affinity with the shoshonitic suite. The good linear correlation identified in Harker diagrams between felsic and mafic types is suggestive that the process of magma mixing is responsible for the chemical variation found . The spectra of the rocks have REE fractionation of light REE relative to heavy REE and a weak negative anomaly in Eu, indicating fractionation of plagioclase. These rocks thrown when the tectonic affinity diagrams of Pearce (1996), positioned in the post-tectonic granites field. Isotopic analyzes for zircon sample of biotite-hornblende-granodiorite (187A), were obtained by SHRIMP IIe at Geochronology Laboratory of the Universidade de São Paulo . The zircon crystals are exhibited as elongated prisms with length versus width proportions 3:1. Cathodoluminescence images reveal that these crystals show up clear or oscillatory zoning, typical of magmatic zircon. Data U/Pb zircon ages reveal a concordant age of 618 ± 4 Ma (MSWD = 0.7). This is similar to the age old crystallization obtained by Long et al. 2005 for Coronel João Sá Massif (626 ± 2 Ma) located in the western part of the Macururé Domain, which presents petrographic and geochemical characteristics similar to the Lagoa do Roçado Granodioritic Stock. The age obtained for these rocks suggests that the Lagoa do Roçado Granodioritic Stock is positioned as the late to posttectonic in relation to the Brasiliano Orogeny.

Portanto, as memórias produzidas pelos naturalistas mencionados constituíram-se como a ¿pedra preciosa ¿ para refutar a tese de que a América Portuguesa, em especial a Capitania de São Paulo, caracterizou-se por um grande vazio de práticas científicas no período compreendido entre o final do setecentos e o início do oitocentos / Abstract: In 1796, the Navy and Overseas Minister of the Mariano¿s Government, Dom Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho, elaborated a political-reformist program which aimed to modernize the administration of the Portuguese Empire, guaranteeing this way the command of its richest part ¿ Brazil, and above all, save the kingdom, and the Portuguese Monarchy. Among the measures took by the Minister was the study of the colonial ¿natural productions¿, once he considered as wealth sources which would help to promote the development of the Portuguese nation. In order to map, explore and analyze the colonies¿ natural world, D. Rodrigo allied with the naturalists, hired in many regions of the Portuguese America. In the Captaincy of São Paulo the allocated studious to work to the Crown¿s service were: João Manso Pereira, Martim Francisco Ribeiro de Andrada e José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva. The object of the Doctorate Thesis is to present the scientific activity practiced by these Enlightened naturalists, through its scientific memories, discussing these activities contribution to the process of institutionalization of the natural sciences in the Portuguese America, in special of its referred Captaincy. Their scientific memories in the field of Natural History constituted as the principal sources of the analysis of the research, once they were the main instrument that allowed to observe the conception of science by which the naturalists work, their theoric-methodological posture, what did they take from the modern scientific theories and how they get in applying them to the local context, among other questions. Such texts were analysed by means of crossing its historical, cultural and scientifical context in which they were conceived, allowing them to observe how the productions of science happened in the local environment. Therefore, the memories produced by the naturalists above mentioned constituted as the ¿precious stone¿ to refute the thesis that the Portuguese America, in special the Captaincy of SP, characterized as a great blank of scientific practices in the period between the final of the 1700¿s and the beginning of 1800¿s / Doutorado / Doutor em Geociências

A systems approach to biogasplanning in Stockholm, Sweden

Österlin, Calle January 2012 (has links)
The Swedish capital Stockholm is at the forefront of biogas gas use, especially when it comesto biogas used for vehicle gas. This technology has the potential of being a fuel with veryhigh environmental performance, but in order to realize the full potential publicenvironmental management must be optimized. Environmental objectives are anenvironmental management is one tool that is used to strive for the desired development. Theaim of this study is to explain the dynamics within the biogas system in Stockholm, with aparticular emphasis on which factors that affects the amount of biogas available for vehiclegas upgrading on the market in Stockholm. The study has been conducted using modelingsessions with key stakeholders involved in the biogas system. The study concludes that theformulation of environmental objectives has a profound impact on how the variousstakeholders act, and thus how the system behaves. The trade off of how much fossil naturalgas that can be mixed into the renewable biogas based vehicle gas is at the very pinnacle ofcomplex matter. A conclusion that is of vital importance for the local planning process andwhen the experiences of Stockholm’s environmental planning are communicated out to therest of the world.

Slope processes and strength of material in silt rich ravines in Säterdalen, Sweden

Westrin, Pontus, Melin, Nils January 2015 (has links)
Slope processes are important to understand if we are to protect fragile environments. Every year slope development in weak soils put nearby infrastructure in risk zones of sliding and ravine erosion takes away field areal from farmers as they grow even larger. Many methods for doing a risk analysis of a slope and its soil are complicated and require a lot of equipment. A simple way to do a slope investigation is explained in this report, along with its advantages and disadvantages. The authors construct a shear ring, an apparatus to measure peak shear stress of soils before fracturing. LIDAR scanning of two small ravines are also made to illustrate how laser scanning can be used to accurately measure denudation in slopes. The results vary, the shear ring is mostly a success aside from errors caused by difficulty in taking representative samples and disturbance. Some of the laboratory work made to determine material properties fail at giving good results, often a result of bad samples or disturbance in the tests. The LIDAR is determined to be a good instrument when working with slope development.

Modelling calving and sliding of Svalbard outlet glaciers : Spatio-temporal changes and interactions

Vallot, Dorothée January 2017 (has links)
Future sea level rise associated to global warming is one of the greatest societal and environmental challenges of tomorrow. A large part of the contribution comes from glaciers and ice sheets discharging ice and meltwater into the ocean and the recent worldwide increase is worrying. Future predictions of sea level rise try to encompass the complex processes of ice dynamics through glacier modelling but there are still large uncertainties due to the lack of observations or too coarse parameterisation, particularly for processes occurring at the glacier interfaces with the bed (sliding) and with the ocean (calving). This thesis focuses on modelling these processes from two marine-terminating glaciers in Svalbard, Kronebreen and Tunabreen. By inverting three years of high temporal resolution time-series of surface velocities on Kronebreen, basal properties are retrieved with the ice flow model Elmer/Ice in Paper I. Results suggest that surface melt during the summer greatly influences the dynamics of the following season and that sliding laws for such glaciers should be adapted to local and global processes changing in space and time. The subglacial drainage system, fed by the surface melt, is modelled in Paper II during two melting seasons. Results show different configurations of efficient and inefficient drainage systems between years and the importance of using a sliding law dependent on spatio-temporal changes in effective pressure. The interaction with the ocean is incorporated in Paper III by combining a series of models, including an ice flow model, a plume model and a particle model for discrete calving and compares the output with observations. Results show the importance of glacier geometry, sliding and undercutting on calving rate and location. However, more observations and analytic methods are needed. Time-lapse imagery placed in front of Tunabreen have been deployed and a method of automatic detection for iceberg calving is presented in Paper IV. Results show the influence of the rising plume in calving and the front destabilisation of the local neighbourhood.

Assessment of Machine Learning Applied to X-Ray Fluorescence Core Scan Data from the Zinkgruvan Zn-Pb-Ag Deposit, Bergslagen, Sweden

Simán, Frans Filip January 2020 (has links)
Lithological core logging is a subjective and time consuming endeavour which could possibly be automated, the question is if and to what extent this automation would affect the resulting core logs. This study presents a case from the Zinkgruvan Zn-Pb-Ag mine, Bergslagen, Sweden; in which Classification and Regression Trees and K-means Clustering on the Self Organising Map were applied to X-Ray Flourescence lithogeochemistry data derived from automated core scan technology. These two methods are assessed through comparison to manual core logging. It is found that the X-Ray Fluorescence data are not sufficiently accurate or precise for the purpose of automated full lithological classification since not all elements are successfully quantified. Furthermore, not all lithologies are possible to distinquish with lithogeochemsitry alone furter hindering the success of automated lithological classification. This study concludes that; 1) K-means on the Self Organising Map is the most successful approach, however; this may be influenced by the method of domain validation, 2) the choice of ground truth for learning is important for both supervised learning and the assessment of machine learning accuracy and 3) geology, data resolution and choice of elements are important parameters for machine learning. Both the supervised method of Classification and Regression Trees and the unsupervised method of K-means clustering applied to Self Organising Maps show potential to assist core logging procedures.
