Lost in transition? : Celtic language revitalization in Scotland and Wales : the primary to secondary school stage

O'Hanlon, Fiona Malcolm January 2012 (has links)
The development of education through the medium of Celtic languages (here specifically Welsh and Scottish Gaelic) is often placed within a language planning framework in which Celtic-medium education is viewed as a means of sustaining a threatened language in the context of levels of intergenerational transmission which are insufficient to maintain speaker numbers. The primary to secondary school stage is a critical juncture from such a perspective, as language revitalization requires the language competencies, patterns of Celtic language use and positive attitudes towards the Celtic language fostered at the primary school stage to be maintained and developed at the secondary school stage. However, the secondary school stage has often been associated with a reduction in the uptake and availability of Celticmedium education and with a decline both in Celtic language use and in positive attitudes towards the language. Such a policy and research context raises two sets of research questions, the first relating to choice of medium of instruction of education, and the second to aspects of pupil language relevant to language planning and maintenance: (1)Research Questions: Choice What factors influence parental decisions for Celtic-medium education at the primary school level? What factors influence Celtic-medium pupil decisions regarding language of education for the first year of secondary school? Do the responses and patterns of response regarding choice differ between (i) the primary and secondary school stages and/or (ii) the Scottish and Welsh contexts? (2)Research Questions: Language Planning What are Celtic-medium pupils’ patterns of (a) language use (b) perceptions of their linguistic ability (c) identification with the Celtic language and (d) perceptions of the usefulness of the Celtic language for their future at the primary and early secondary school stages? Do the responses and patterns of response differ between the Scottish and Welsh contexts at the primary school stage? Do the responses and patterns of response shift between the primary and secondary school stages in either the Scottish or the Welsh contexts? This thesis presents the results of a longitudinal study of 28 Gaelic-medium and 57 Welsh-medium final year primary and first year secondary pupils, their parents and teachers, conducted in 2007-2008. English-medium pupils from dual stream schools were also incorporated, primarily as a control group for the experiences of their Celtic-medium counterparts (17 English-medium Scotland and 34 English-medium Wales pupils, their parents and teachers). The research questions are investigated using multiple research methods in a longitudinal design. Pupils took part in semi-structured interviews in the final year of primary school and in the first year of secondary school concerning their experience of learning a Celtic language, the reasons for their decisions regarding the medium of instruction of secondary school subjects, their identification with their Celtic language and their perceptions of its usefulness. At each of these two school stages, pupils also completed standardized questionnaires (which yielded statistical data) on their language use and their perceived language competence in their Celtic language and in English. The pupil interviews were supplemented by interviews with their teachers at primary and secondary school, and with their parents at the primary school stage; thus a total of 383 interviews were conducted. Comparison was made not only longitudinally but also between the Gaelic and Welsh groups and, where relevant, between each of them and their English-medium counterparts. The results are discussed in relation to contextual factors (for example national and local authority policies, the linguistic demographics of Scotland and Wales and the level of Celtic-language institutionalization in the two countries), in relation to previous research on choice, language use, language ability and language attitudes in the Scottish and Welsh contexts, and in relation to theories of language maintenance.

Liu xue : a comparative look at cross-border study via social networks and national identities

Carnine, Julia 25 September 2014 (has links)
We are currently witness to an explosion of international academic mobility across the globe. However, can we truly speak of a student returning ‘transformed’ by his or her foreign study experience with an altered worldview? And if so, what may have triggered such changes? As international educators we face a lack of international empirically based comparative studies on the impact of a study abroad as well as how the various institutional frameworks of mobility and students’ social lives in the host country contribute to different outcomes. This dissertation is based on fieldwork in three countries (France, China and the United States) undertaken in 2010 and 2011 with a sample of 180 mobile students surveyed. The various factors at play during an academic sojourn abroad that may impact a student’s self-understanding and his/her ties to his/her country are examined. Our central question is whether students’ national identifications and the idea of the nation as conceived in each national tradition undergo transformations influenced by the relationships and social networks woven during the stay abroad. We assume that there is a link between the internationally heterogeneous composition of a network and a more open and tolerant set of national identifications. Social network analyses and an original multivariate statistical indicator measuring national identity types are used to show this link. In conclusion, we demonstrate how types of social networks impact ideas about national identity. Given the strong structural influence of mobility frameworks on student sociability, we can more accurately compare them in terms of their potential impact on students’ international understanding.

Telework is a new form of working, performed from home and using information technology and telecommunications. A qualitative, exploratory and empirical research was done, interviewing twenty-one teleworkers from two enterprises, chosen according to the criterion of accessibility. We started analyzing the changing process from the traditional workplace in an organization s office to the new remote form, focussing mainly on the feelings of the people. We also emphasized the life of the workers at home and the intersubjectivities with their families. The problems resulting from a new space-time dimension, the issue of new roles assumed and the identifications that led to new identities, those aspects were all studied in depth. We still approached the social relationship between the interviewees and their colleagues and managers of the enterprises they work for. The resulting data showed that working at home can lead to improvement in the quality of life (well-being). The worker is freer and has more autonomy to organize him/herself, applying his/her own rhythm to professional tasks. The use of a domestic workplace, however, requires an adaptation of the intersubjectivities. It is necessary to find a balance between the different scenes the working and the family one- coexisting in the same space. In this study, it can be observed that teleworkers achieve the above demands. There seem to be gains in the family relationships, due to the fact that workers are more available for domestic routines without neglecting either professional commitment or involvement. It was still noticed and analyzed some rather uneasy feeling caused by the (physical) distance to the entrepreneurial environment. There are losses in the relationship with colleagues and the employing organization, which can jeopardize the career development and become a suffering. According to the way the teleworkers adapt themselves to the new working relationships, the suffering can grow into a pathology or otherwise, become creative / O presente estudo teve por objetivo pesquisar uma nova forma de trabalho, denominada teletrabalho.

Luck, Simon 17 October 2008 (has links) (PDF)

The research was based on the dynamics of use that trans people make of certain digital media, specifically social networks and blogs, as a source of information, sharing, debate and socialization. Therefore, I used the online observation of blogs, pages/communities of Facebook and Youtube channels, wich are constituted as spaces of circulation of speeches about transsexuality. In dialogue with Queer Theory, Gender studies, and other digital media researches I explore the relationship between representations, corporalities, subjectivities as the transsexuality involve a cultura dynamic which is associated with modes of understand/modify bodies and subjectivities.

Therefore, the contextualization of Goiânia’s indie music, the identification of this music scene’s public, their characteristics and preferences, the understanding of the way how social network sites negotiate with the public’s different identifications and the evidence of the Internet’s role for music scenes’ development explored by Goiânia’s alternative festivals are all objectives and key points. In the qualitative and quantitative methodological course, bibliographical and documental researches, field observations (including online), photo analysis and questionnaires during the 22nd edition of Goiânia Noise were used. The obtained data, especially the ones from the 131 questionnaires’ answers during the event’s three days, were analyzed based on four fundamental axes: the cultural references and the Internet in Goiânia’s indie music scene context; the emergence of urban neotribes based on Goiânia Noise; the festival public’s cultural identifications, tastes and consumptions; and, lastly, the Web as a device for the event’s media viabilization. Conclusively, the hybridity and plurality of a scene and a public both considered neotribal, are partial, always anchored by the social network sites.

A Structured Approach for Evaluating Risk Impacts in IT Projects

Saeed, Muhammad, Ziauddin, Mehmood January 2008 (has links)
Date: 12-June-2008 Authors: Muhammad Saeed – 760721 Västerås – Sweden Mehmood Ziauddin – 830730 Västerås – Sweden Title: A Structured Approach for Evaluating Risk Impacts in IT Projects Introduction: Risk is an integral part of any project and it’s more appropriate to say for IT because it is changing with a very fast pace. Different surveys, reports and researches show astonishing statistics about the risks in IT projects. Through proper risk assessment techniques most of the uncertainties can be reduced while initiating, implementing and improving IT projects. Different authors talk about different risks and different strategies to respond to them. It becomes difficult at times to keep in check all the risks. Often risk management is over hyped, and often it’s totally neglected. Their needs to be a balanced approached in risk management. Problem: How a structured approach will be beneficial for an organization in assessing risk impacts on IT Projects? Purpose: The aim of this report is to develop and analyze a structured approach which will permit an organization in identifying & categorizing risks and measuring their impact on IT Projects. Method: Exploratory research approach is used and data collection is done using secondary sources. Our thesis is qualitative research based. Qualitative research is the one which is not relying on statistical data as compared to quantitative research. Besides our text books and study material, the main source of information was internet databases and university library from where we read different articles, thesis and books. Majority of the material studied was collected from Mälardalen University Library’s online databases like, Elin@Mälardalen, Compendex, Emerald and Ebrary. We also consulted some books which we got by inter-library loan from Mälardalen University. Conclusion: With the help of Remenyi’s approach for categorizing risks and Applegate’s approach of measuring risk impact, we have managed to develop a structured approach and reached a conclusion that proper identification and categorizing of risks can be very beneficial for an organization in numerous ways. This systematic way assists top management, project managers, IT & non IT Personnel is taking preemptive measures for managing risks. The benefits it brings is that it gives an equal understanding within the organization and this structured approach gives an in-depth and clear understanding of the risks associated with IT projects.

Li, Zetao 11 July 2006 (has links) (PDF)
