Ce mémoire est constitué de deux grands ensembles: premièrement, un regard synthétique sur le développement de l'art inuit contemporain depuis l'art nordique préhistorique, et deuxièmement une approche sémiotique de l'art de Charlie Inukpuk. Ainsi, dans notre premier volet nous avons voulu situer les multiples productions de l'art esquimau préhistorique jusqu'à l'avènement de l’art inuit contemporain dans une perspective historique basée sur des recherches archéologiques et historiques; notre objectif était alors de démontrer l'importance du phénomène transculturel entre l'art inuit contemporain et l'envahissante culture des Blancs. Par la suite, ceci nous a amené à aborder la question du primitivisme car, l'art inuit a trop souvent été qualifié "d'art primitif " comme si, pour différentes raisons, plusieurs auteurs avaient voulu conserver une intriguante saveur exotique à cette forme d’expression artistique non-occidentale. Cette première partie est suivie d'un portrait contextuel de l'art de Charlie Inukpuk, jeune sculpteur inuit qui vit à Inukjuak dans le Nunavik (Nouveau- Québec). L'art de Charlie Inukpuk nous sert ici de prétexte pour appliquer un modèle sémiotique d'analyse à une oeuvre d'art inuit. Cherchant délibérément à éviter les écueils d'une approche trop ethnologique de l'art inuit, le but ultime de nos travaux était de vérifier le degré d'efficacité d’une telle analyse sémiotique sur une forme d'expression artistique non-occidentale. This study focuses on how taste can be perceived visually between two families in the first season of Netflix’s Bridgerton (2020) with a focus on costume, color and taste. Through the use of qualitative, comparative and semiotic methods, taken from a contemporary Western perspective, screenshots from two separate scenes will be analyzed to examine how the families convey a difference in taste and class based on theory by; Beverley Skeggs, Maria Sturken & Lisa Cartwright, Pierre Bourdieu and Gunther Kress & Theo Van Leeuwen. The results convey that taste and class is perceived depending on how the families’ costumes, focusing on color and fabric, work together with each other. One family shows a consistent use of color and fabric that portray a sense of unity, while the other family focuses on displaying individuality and personality traits through their costumes. Additionally, visual parallels are drawn between Bridgerton and the 2015 adaptation of Cinderella, particularly in how the costumes of Cinderella and her stepfamily may subconsciously influence the audience's interpretation of the characters in Bridgerton. This paper includes a design documentation after page 38 with the name “Mångfald i illustrationer” that is a fictional project in the form of an image bank for the organization Bris. The purpose was to create new illustrations for their website under the section "Vanliga ämnen" that were relatable to the target audience; teenagers between the ages of 13-18. The result is twelve illustrations that can be used in various ways in relation to the section "Vanliga ämnen", that feel inviting and contemporary for the target audience.

Par le biais de la méthode d’analyse phénoménologique et structurale adaptée à la représentation plastique du divin, sont identifiés les facteurs de régulation sociale actualisés au sein du comportement mystique et visualisés à travers l’art sacré. Thesis (MPhil(Visual Arts. Illustration))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / This thesis is a critical analysis of Afrikaans illustrated children’s Bibles as cultural texts
in Afrikaner nationalist discourse. Christian Calvinism was a distinct signifier in
Afrikaner nationalism and served as an instrument in the construction of Afrikaner
national identity. I propose in this study that Afrikaans children’s Bibles encoded the
principles of Afrikaner nationalism and were used as didactic tools for the configuration
of an exclusive national consciousness. A potential pitfall in the analysis of Afrikaans
children’s Bibles as nationalist texts is the fact that these books were translated from
Dutch or English into Afrikaans. However, the act of translating the Bible, ‘the Word of
God’, into Afrikaans served to confirm the ‘totem’ of Afrikaner Christian-Nationalism.
The appropriation of the Bible re-contextualized the ‘Holy Scriptures’, placing them
within the milieu of Afrikaner national identity and consciousness: language and religion
thus became interrelated catalysts in the social construction of Afrikaner national
consciousness. Finally, my own reinvention of the Afrikaans picture Bible – in opposition
to conventional illustrated children’s Bibles – is put forward and discussed as a
postmodern text that encodes a radically different post-Apartheid conception of identity.

The Office of the Dead in England : image and music in the Book of Hours and related texts, c. 1250-c. 1500Schell, Sarah January 2011 (has links)
This study examines the illustrations that appear at the Office of the Dead in English Books of Hours, and seeks to understand how text and image work together in this thriving culture of commemoration to say something about how the English understood and thought about death in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The Office of the Dead would have been one of the most familiar liturgical rituals in the medieval period, and was recited almost without ceasing at family funerals, gild commemorations, yearly minds, and chantry chapel services. The Placebo and Dirige were texts that many people knew through this constant exposure, and would have been more widely known than other 'death' texts such as the Ars Moriendi. The images that are found in these books reflect wider trends in the piety and devotional practice of the time. The first half of the study discusses the images that appear in these horae, and the relationship between the text and image is explored. The funeral or vigil scene, as the most commonly occurring, is discussed with reference to contemporary funeral practices, and ways of reading a Book of Hours. Other iconographic themes that appear in the Office of the Dead, such as the Roman de Renart, the Pety Job, the Legend of the Three Living and the Three Dead, the story of Lazarus, and the life of Job, are also discussed. The second part of the thesis investigates the musical elaborations of the Office of the Dead as found in English prayer books. The Office of the Dead had a close relationship with music, which is demonstrated through an examination of the popularity of musical funerals and obits, as well as in the occurrence of musical notation for the Office in a book often used by the musically illiterate. The development of the Office of the Dead in conjunction with the development of the Books of Hours is also considered, and places the traditions and ideas that were part of the funeral process in medieval England in a larger historical context.

The goal of this dissertation is to document and present exhibition concepts of new or re- established galleries and exhibition halls united in the Union of Czechoslovak Visual Artists in Prague in 1964-1969. A partial goal is to find and clarify principal legal, political and cultural events in the background of which such exhibition and artistic life unfolded. The thesis covers the period between two conventions of the Union of Czechoslovak Visual Artists, i.e. the period from December 1964 until the end of 1969 with certain intermissions. In terms of the selection, it deals with "smaller" galleries that influenced the most the level of presentation of visual arts at exhibitions in Prague in the period under consideration. For this reason, attention is paid to the Václav Špála Gallery, Nová síň Gallery, Galerie Na Karlově náměstí, and the Vincenc Kramář Gallery. The basic topics of the dissertation are concentrated in two spheres that pervade one another. The first sphere is dedicated to fundamental social and political prerequisites for the establishment of "smaller" galleries as well as, in brief, the history of the formation of the Union of Czechoslovak Visual Artists. The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe the uniqueness of the Baobab publishing house books for pre-school children and to find out what is the opinion of parents and pre- school teachers on selected books from this publishing house, on their content and on their graphic design. In the theoretical part I describe and explain the basic concepts of the reading literacy. I also devote to the contemporary situation in the book market for children, especially pre- school children, mostly non-readers. I focus on a small alternative publishing house called Baobab, its book production for children in general, and on its awarded books. In the empirical part I interviewed parents (41 returned questionnaires altogether) about their awareness and opinion on the Baobab publishing house and on selected books published by Baobab, namely Jak zvířataspí (How Animals Sleep), Šmalcova ABECEDA (Šmalec's Alphabet) and Z domu a zahrady (From the House And the Garden). I also interviewed 7 pre- school teachers to find out about their awareness of the Baobab publishing house and about their opinion on the selected books. Translating linguistic and cultural aspects in Swahili healthcare texts: a descriptive translation studies approachOrang'i, Douglas Ondara 05 1900 (has links)

as such, this study theoretically uses Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) to investigate
English-Swahili healthcare texts. The aim of the study was to: identify, describe and analyse
linguistic and cultural aspects in the texts; identify, describe, and analyse translation strategies
used in the texts; and describe and analyse the use of illustrations in the texts. The study made
use of Kruger and Wallmach’s (1997) analytical framework. The Tertium Comparationis of
the study was descriptive terms, cohesive devices, translation strategies, division of texts,
illustrations, text titles, and taboo words. On the linguistic aspects, the study’s main findings
were: that the English texts use more descriptive terms than the Swahili texts; Swahili texts
have a higher frequency use of references because it contains a number of derivational and
inflectional morphemes; substitution is sparingly used whereas ellipsis is almost non-existent
in Swahili texts in spite of its presence in the source texts; additive and causal conjunctions
were the most prevalent in the texts; and inasmuch as there were no significant differences in
the use of lexical cohesion in the ST and TT, Swahili texts were found to be more cohesive due
to the slightly higher number of lexical items. Regarding the cultural aspects, it was found that
translators use euphemism in the translation of words considered taboo and this informed the
conclusion that there reigns the euphemism norm in Swahili texts. It equally emerged that
strategies used to overcome non-lexicalisation include: use of pure loan words, use of pure loan
words preceded by explanation, use of indigenised loan words, use of omission and translation
by a more general word. On the other hand, translators used strategies of substitution, use of
general words, paraphrasing and cultural substitution to translate words considered taboo. In
addition, the study found that illustrations are used in more less the same way both in the ST
and TT save for some slight modifications that are done in order to align them with the target
culture expectations. Furthermore, the study theoretically effectuated four norms: explicitation

The master thesis deals with the importance of the book in evolution of the children's imagination. The first part includes short introduction to problems of children's imagination. The second part is engaged in ontogeny of child from prenatal period to the middle childhood and in progress of key competences. It analyzes selected psychological approaches, which had the imagination as a subject of the research. The thesis explains and defines basic terms and processes of the imagination. It deals with a specific phenomenon of the children's imagination and with the evolution of the imagination. The third part introduces typical children's literature, directs on the traditional fairytale and it specifies problems of the literary characters too. It describes the historical development of the Czech book illustration, importance of the illustration in books for children and it also describes children's drawings. The fourth part applies all of previous pieces of knowledges into the work experience in kindergarten. It also describes relations between child and school or child and book.
