People who study about this writer focused on two possibilities for understanding his political stance: on one hand, there are authors who consider he is disconnected from his time and sociopolitical context; on the other hand, there are those who see him as a political activist opposed to Rome. In this Thesis, we consider that Lucian has an ambiguous position, since he identifies himself as Syrian, underscores his entire Hellenic education and criticizes aspects of Roman political culture. However, we believe that he was aware of the benefits that the empire brought all dominated peoples. Thus, we can say that he was a writer who collaborated with the maintenance of the imperial system. To prove this hypothesis, we analyze his famous satirical dialogues, which were often disregarded by his interpreters. Known for combining the dour philosophical dialogue with sarcastic comedy, we understand that the writer intended to produce laughter, which would turn to the mobilization of thought. We restrict our investigation to the dialogues that use mythology as subject. The myths were thought as components of a cultural memory and thus are presented within the limits of the Roman memory system. This selection was formally organized on topics related to political power and its everyday manifestations. Thus, we are concerned with the Lucianic representation of assemblies, tyrants and the relations of the deities among them and especially with Zeus. We understand that Lucian did a thorough exegesis of his reality, highlighting and criticizing abusive postures. In his dialogues, we can see other possible dimensions of interpretation of political power in the Roman Empire.

Paulo Henrique Oliveira de Lima 30 August 2016 (has links)
This research intend to discuss the way Dionysus was transformed into epic hero in Nonnus Dionysiaca, an epic in forty-eight chants concerning the Dionysian Cycle, from the foundation of Thebes and the establishment of their ancestors to the Olympic apotheosis of the god. The analysis will be based on Dionysos features on the battlefield in opposition to the three main opponents in the poem, Lycurgus, Deríades and Pentheus. For a better understanding of the construction of Dionysus as a hero, an analysis is needed on the social and cultural context in which Nono composes his poem, as well as the poet\'s relationship with Homer, the Greek main epic poet. Attached are the chants XXXIX and XL of Dionysiaca in original greek and the translation made by me.

Diversidade econômica e interesses regionais: as políticas públicas do governo provincial mineiro (1870-1889) / Economic deversity and regional interests: the public policies of the provincial government of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Ana Paula Ribeiro Freitas 04 December 2009 (has links)
The objective of the present research is to analyze the public politics of the administrators of Minas Gerais, between 1870 and 1889. The provincial government mining consisted of two instances of power: the Provincial Legislative Assembly and the Presidency of the Province. By analyzing the reports and speeches of the presidents of the province of Minas Gerais, Annals of the provincial legislature of Minas Gerais and the revenue laws of the province of Minas, try to understand the relationship between the two locus of power at provincial level - Legislative Assembly and President of the Province - the definition of public policy for the province of Minas Gerais, meet the demands of political groups and regional economic. I argue that the interests of the sectors related to coffee in the forest zone were privileged in mining development proposals made and approved by the provincial deputies, who had the final say in drawing up the budget of the province, consigning investments to be made and taxes to be charged. The budgets and the discussions among the members can identify which sectors were favored by investment and they paid the bill through taxes. In historiographical terms, we corroborate a trend of recent productions, which conceive the existence of negotiations between the ruling elites of the Imperial Government and the regional elites and not a subordination of these for those.

From the date of its founding in 1826, the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, one of the main official institutions of the period, became responsible for creating national symbols, in charge of the formation of a national imaginary. The need to provide the country with a single coherent past has become one of the main demands of the post-independence project, through which it sought to form a State and build a Nation in tropical soil. This research fits into the current trend of Brazilian historiography and seeks to promote a critical re-evaluation of artistic production context of the 19th century, having as study object the interdependent relationship established between the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and the Imperial State during the Second Empire (1840 to 1889). Specifically, we analyze the artistic patronage phenomenon in the official scenario of the Eighteen hundreds, understanding it as a dialogical process, involving the financing of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts by the Imperial Government and the provision of services by the artistic institution. We also raised information about the artists funded by the Imperial Household and commissioned works and/ or acquired by state bodies over the proposed period. By processing the data obtained, we aimed to identify the valued artistic themes between 1840 and 1889, relating them to the period where they were produced and acquired.

Representations of empire : images of foreign peoples and places on Roman coinage (138 B.C.-96 A.D.)

MacDougall, Ellen Margaret Hope January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines figural representations of foreign peoples and places on Roman coinage. An accompanying appendix thoroughly catalogues this imagery between its earliest extant appearance in approximately 138 B.C. and the death of Domitian in 96 A.D. A systematic survey makes it possible to nuance existing narratives of the development of this imagery that privileged the late first and early second centuries A.D. as the key moments of change by revealing considerable diversity and innovation in the earlier period. A second contribution is methodological, highlighting the need for contextual analysis of individual issues to supplement the typological approach that has dominated earlier scholarship. Chapter One focuses on image types produced between 138-31 B.C. This was a particularly vibrant period for the production of these images and the chapter reveals a diverse spectrum of imagery. This contrasts sharply with previous assessments that characterised the period as dominated by images of submission. Chapter Two concentrates on Augustan imperial coinage (31 B.C.-14 A.D.) and identifies a shift towards more consistent usage of submissive imagery. Chapter Three highlights a significant decline in the use of images of foreign peoples and places on imperial coinage minted by the Julio-Claudian successors (14-68 A.D.). Chapter Four identifies a dramatic, albeit inconsistent, resurgence in the use of personifications of foreign peoples and places on coinage minted by competing imperial claimants during the civil wars of 68-69 A.D. Chapter Five focuses on Flavian imperial coinage (69-96 A.D.) and uncovers a significant resurgence in captive imagery. It identifies a new blurring of the lines between the iconographic traditions of captives and personifications of peoples and places. This blending of the two traditions lays important foundations for subsequent imagery on Trajanic imperial coinage.

Visions of Possibilities: (De)Constructing Imperial Narratives in Star Trek: Voyager

McKagen, Elizabeth Leigh 19 June 2020 (has links)
In this dissertation, I argue that contemporary cultural narratives are infused with ongoing ideologies of Euro-American imperialism that prioritizes Western bodies and ways of engaging with living and nonliving beings. This restriction severely hinders possible responses to the present environmental crisis of the era often called the 'Anthropocene' through constant creation and recreation of imperial power relations and the presumed superiority of Western approaches to living. Taking inspiration from postcolonial theorist Edward Said and theories of cultural studies and empire, I use interdisciplinary methods of narrative analysis to examine threads of imperial ideologies that are (re)told and glorified in popular American science fiction television series Star Trek: Voyager (1995-2001). Voyager follows the Star Trek tradition of exploring the far reaches of space to advance human knowledge, and in doing so writes Western imperial practices of difference into an idealized future. In chapters 2 through 5, I explore how the series highlights American exceptionalism, Manifest Destiny, a belief in endless linear progress, and the creation of a safe 'home' space amidst the 'wild' spaces of the Delta Quadrant. Each of these narrative features, as presented, rely on Western difference and superiority that were fundamental to past and present Euro-American imperial encounters and endeavors. Through the recreation of these ideologies of empire, Voyager normalizes, legitimizes, and universalizes imperial approaches to engagement with other lifeforms. In order to move away from this intertwined thread of past/present/future imperialism, in my final chapter I propose alternatives for ecofeminist-inspired narrative approaches that offer possibilities for non-imperial futures. As my analysis will demonstrate, Voyager is unable to provide new worlds free of imperial ideas, but the possibility exists through the loss of their entire world, and their need to constantly make and remake their world(s). World making provides opportunity for endless possibilities, and science fiction television has the potential to aid in bringing non-imperial worlds to life. These stories push beyond individual and anthropocentric attitudes toward life on earth, and although such stories will not likely be the immediate cause of change in this era of precarity, stories can prime us for thinking in non-imperial ways. / Doctor of Philosophy / In this dissertation, I argue that contemporary cultural narratives feature continuing Euro-American imperialism that prioritizes Western bodies and ideas. These embedded narratives recreate centuries of Western imperial encounters and attitudes, and severely hinder possible responses to the present environmental crisis of the 'modern' era. Voyager follows the Star Trek tradition of exploring the far reaches of space to advance human knowledge, and in doing so inscribes Western imperial practices of difference and power into an idealized future through features of exploration, modernity, and progress. In order to move away from these imperial modes of thinking, I then propose alternatives for new narrative approaches that offer possibilities for non-imperial futures. Nommer les femmes de la famille Julio-Claudienne : témoignages littéraires et épigraphiques / The appellations of the women of Julio-Claudian family in literary and epigraphic sources

Martina, Gabriele 06 July 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the appellations, names and titles of the women of Julio-Claudian family in literary and epigraphic sources. The analysis and study of the appellations of these imperial women during the first period of the Roman Empire, is part of the contemporary research that seeks to define the spaces and action modalities of women during the time of classical antiquity and in particular, the period of transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. In fact, the passage of the Roman Republic to a new form of government marked a significant change in the situation of women, especially for the women of the imperial domus. Women, who until then were normally confined to a domestic and private sphere, acquired and exercised new action modalities within new spheres of action. This thesis is organized in two sections: the first part of the study analyses the names, appellations and titles of imperial women and the second part collates and organizes all the literary and epigraphic evidences of each woman of the Julio-Claudian family. The purpose of this research on the appellations and names of the women of Julio-Claudian dynasty has been to advance the study of feminine spaces at the beginning of the Roman Empire and to illuminate of the new actions modalities for the imperial women during this period. Furthermore, this doctoral research contributes to deepening our understanding of the changes of the role and status of imperial women and the complex relative relationships of these women to the men of imperial family, such as the emperors and other male figures in Julio-Claudian dynasty, or to eminent personages in the Roman imperial society

A Faculdade de Direito de São Paulo e as interferências imperiais no ensino Jurídico: uma edição de legislações de 1827 a 1879 / University of São Paulo School of Law and the imperial interference in legal education: an edition of laws from 1827 to 1879

Navarro, Ana Paula 02 June 2010 (has links)
This Masters dissertation is a presentation of seventy-four 19th Century documents referring to the management of the Academia de Sciencias Juridicas in São Paulo, now the University of São Paulo School of Law (Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo). Based on the edition of these documents, we discuss imperial interference in the Academy, from its foundation in 1827, until 1879. Imperial legislation from this period shows interference from the government, whose aim was to control the Law Course (Curso Jurídico). On one hand, this interference served to regulate various aspects of academic life, such as the appointment of professors, course content, preparatory courses and resolution of problems related to inadequacies in teaching, absence of tutors and student discipline, and on the other hand, it served to annul and substitute the Schools own bylaws whenever the government considered it necessary. The study of the historic aspects of the Schools foundation and of imperial interference shows that the function of the Academy was to preserve the structure of Monarchical Power, by producing graduates aligned with the dominant ideology of the time.
