Turbulence and Sound Generated by a Rotor Operating Near a Wall

Murray, Henry Hall IV 08 June 2016 (has links)
Acoustic and aerodynamic measurements have been carried out on a rotor operating in a planar turbulent boundary layer near a wall for a variety of thrust conditions and yaw angles with respect to the inflow. At the highest thrust condition a strong flow reversal in the wall-rotor tip gap was observed. Average velocity fields filtered by the angular position of the rotor show that the flow reversal is fed by jets of fluid that tend to form below the blade as it passes by the wall. Instantaneous velocity measurements show the presence of strong vortices in the tip gap. These vortices were characterized and found to be both stronger and more numerous on the downstroke side of the tip gap. Additionally, vortices with the same handedness as the bound circulation in the blade were more numerous and only located on the downstroke side of the tip gap. Those with the opposite handedness were found to be only located on the upstroke side. Unexpectedly strong far-field acoustic response at the blade passage frequency at this highest thrust condition and is believed to be due to an interaction of the blade tip with these vortices. At moderate thrust, when the rotor was yawed toward the downstroke side the far field acoustic response at the blade passage frequency was found to increase. The opposite was true as it was yawed toward the upstroke side. At the highest thrust, however the unyawed rotor had the strongest blade passage frequency response which is believed to be due to stronger vortex-tip interaction in this case. / Master of Science

The hypotensive effect of exercise on IOP : an interaction of physical fitness and parasympathetic efficacy

Roddy, Gabrielle 07 1900 (has links)
After over 100 papers on post exercise reductions in IOP it is known that under a vast number of exercise protocols, of differing intensities and durations, the hypotensive effects of exercise on IOP are attenuated in the physically fit. A proposed mechanism is the parasympathetic nervous system that potentially increases in efficacy with physical training. The general objective of this thesis was to further tease apart those factors that contribute to post exercise reductions in IOP and to elucidate possible mechanisms. Study 1, a meta-analysis, was conducted to quantify the relative contributions of intensity and duration to the effect of exercise on IOP and the degree to which these variables affect sedentary and normally active populations. A pattern of results emerged such that those persons who are Sedentary experience a greater drop in IOP after aerobic exercise than those who are physically fit (ES = -4.198 mm Hg and -2.340 mm Hg, respectively). A lack of pre-exercise control over covariates such as fluid ingestion was also observed. Hyperosmolarity (a side effect of dehydration) is one of the proposed mechanisms driving the hypotensive effect of exercise. Study 2 compared reductions in IOP in both a hypo-hydrated (water restricted) and hyper-hydrated condition before, during and after an ergocycle ride of 90 minutes. After an initial decrease in both conditions, IOP returned to baseline in the Hypo-hydrated condition despite a significant loss of bodyweight and increased in the Hyper-hydrated condition as a result of the hydration protocol. Given the high level of physical fitness among our participants in Study 2, Study 3 was designed to further elucidate the relationship between physical conditioning and IOP. Using correlational analyses we observed the relationship between a test of VO2max and an average of IOP measurements made over the course of eight weeks. A significant relationship existed only for those participants in the upper range of the fitness continuum. Conclusion. The results of the current study suggest that the hypotensive effect of exercise on IOP is likely a homeostatic response to dysregulation of the aqueous humor caused by the initiation of exercise and pre-exercise fluid intake protocols.

Régulation et prévision de l’ingestion des chèvres laitières au pâturage / Intake regulation and prediction of grazing dairy goats

Charpentier, Alexia 07 December 2018 (has links)
In the context of prices volatility and growing demand for goat's milk products from respectful practices of the environment and animals, grazing can become more important in the diet of dairy goats. According to the literature review, the factors of variation of intake and performance of grazing dairy goats have been poorly studied under temperate conditions. The aim of this thesis was to understand the influence of grazing management practices (availability of pasture and access time to grazing) on the regulation of intake and performance of dairy goats, with the aim of refining recommendations for farmers and to elaborate a model of intake prediction. Based on the six trials conducted: (1) goats receiving between 0.6 and 1.0 kg/day of supplements adapt themselves to access time restrictions from 11 to 6 h/d, by increasing their intake rate and especially the percentage of time spent grazing up to 95% of access time, (2) goats receiving 0.6 kg of concentrates and an access time of at least 11 h/day can adapt to a restriction of pasture allowance up to 2.3-2.6 kg DM/goat/day, (3) live weight and milk production are the main variables affecting intake while parity and stage of lactation had no significant effect. This work provides the first response laws of intake, milk production and behavioural adaptation of grazing dairy goats to variations of access time to pasture and to pasture allowance.

Non-indigenous zooplankton : the role of predatory cladocerans and of copepods in trophic dynamics

Andersen Borg, Marc January 2009 (has links)
Human-mediated introductions of non-indigenous species now threaten to homogenize the biota of the Globe, causing huge economic and ecological damage. This thesis studies the ecological role of 3 invasive planktonic crustaceans, the omnivorous copepod Acartia tonsa (western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific) and the predatory cladocerans, Cercopagis pengoi (Ponto-Caspian) and Bythotrephes longimanus (Eurasian). B. longimanus invaded the North American Great Lakes in 1982, C. pengoi the Baltic in 1992 and the Great Lakes in 1999, while A. tonsa has an extensive invasion history that includes the Baltic. We review current knowledge on feeding biology of the predatory cladocerans. A study of stable C and N isotope ratios indicated mesozooplankton as the main food source of C. pengoi in the northern Baltic Sea proper, with young C. pengoi also eating microzooplankton, such as rotifers. Young-of-the-year herring did eat C. pengoi and herring trophic position shifted from 2.6 before the invasion to 3.4 after, indicating that C. pengoi had been “sandwiched” into the modified food web between mesozooplankton and fish. Salinity tolerance experiments on Acartia tonsa and co-occurring Acartia clausi showed the formers euryhaline character and high grazing potential. Energy partitioning between ingestion, production and respiration was rather constant over the tested salinity range of 2 to 33, with small differences in gross growth efficiency and cost of growth, but maximum ingestion at 10-20. Egg hatching in A. tonsa was only reduced at the lowest salinity. Extreme changes in salinity were needed to cause significant mortality of A. tonsa in the field, but its feeding activity could be severely reduced by salinity changes likely to occur in estuaries. A study of a hypertrophic estuary showed that A. tonsa can sustain a population despite very high mortality rates, caused by predation, high pH and low oxygen, helping explain the success of A. tonsa as an invader of estuaries.

In this sense, the present study aimed to evaluate the influence of acute and chronic ethanol intake in the auditory perception and neuropsychological functioning. Acute ingestion was experimentally manipulated in college students with 18 to 30 years old compared with themselves in two different sessions. In one of days, they had to ingest a quantity of alcohol proportional to their body weight and when they possessed 0.08% of ethanol in the blood they were evaluated. In another day, they drank just a placebo drink. The chronic ingestion of alcohol was evaluated in Alcoholics Anonymous participants, aged 40-60 years, who had 1-15 years of abstinence. They were evaluated in separate groups of three years of abstinence and were compared to a control group of first degree relatives. The auditory perception was evaluated by means of a test for discrimination of musical notes corresponding to standard Western scale sound frequencies. Cognitive functioning was evaluated by means of neuropsychological tests for the processes of memory, attention, and executive functioning. The results showed that both forms of alcohol intake cause perceptual hearing loss as well as the some neuropsychological subfunctions evaluated, suggesting that the use of ethanol may be a path of some cognitive impairment.

On the Analysis and Design of Series Hybrid Distributed Electric Propulsion with Boundary Layer Ingestion of Remotely Piloted Aircraft

Varela Martínez, Pau 18 April 2023 (has links)
[EN] The present work explores possible solutions to two correlated events that could compromise our future to some extent. On the one hand, the growth of the fleet of small aircraft in the coming years, whether manned or not, is a reality. Access to these aircraft by an increasing majority of the public grows year after year and at the same time, manufacturers adapt their aircraft to missions that we could not contemplate a few years ago. On the other hand, and unfortunately, climate change is also a reality that compromises not only our future but also our present. Today the climate alert is and must be elevated. If we do not find solutions that help alleviate this problem, life on the planet could irremediably change for the worse. Both facts are implicitly related. The manufacture and operation of vehicles contribute significantly to increasing the carbon footprint, so the increase in the fleet in the coming years may have an extremely negative impact on global polluting and greenhouse gas emissions. That is why official organizations and scientific and technological development sectors promote research for possible solutions. This work tries to do its bit to minimize this common problem. Multiple technologies are proposed to reduce the fuel required by 25kg aircraft at takeoff and, thus, reduce the emissions associated with their operation. The applied technologies are electric series hybridization, distributed electric propulsion, and boundary layer ingestion. Separately, these technologies have shown multiple advantages, especially in terms of improving aircraft propulsion and aerodynamics, which directly affects fuel consumption. Nevertheless, this work proposes the simultaneous use of all of them to reduce fuel consumption further and, therefore, polluting and greenhouse gas emissions. To do this, after these pages, the main parameters of this aircraft are chosen and accompanied by an exhaustive analysis of the fluid dynamic behavior. With an understanding of its behavior, it is possible to optimize its components' selection so that significant fuel consumption improvements are obtained. This fuel saving is shown in comparison with similar aircraft in size and weight, but that does not include these technologies, achieving a saving of 16% of fuel weight for the same range. This work's conduction focuses on employing computational tools mainly based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This primary tool will be complemented by the use of modal decomposition to carry out the analyses, and the creation of a database that will help create quick models useful in future conceptual and preliminary designs of this type of aircraft. / The respondent would like to acknowledge the financial support received through contract FPI-UPV PREDOCFD/19 of Subprograma 2 of Universitat Politècnica de València / Varela Martínez, P. Heat Transfer and Film Cooling Performance on a Transonic Converging Nozzle Guide Vane Endwall With Purge Jet Cooling and Dual Cavity Slashface Leakage

Van Hout, Daniel Richard 06 November 2020 (has links)
The following study presents an experimental and computational investigation on the effects of implementing a dual cavity slashface configuration and varying slashface coolant leakage mass flow rate on the thermal performance for a 1st stage nozzle guide vane axisymmetric converging endwall. An upstream doublet staggered cylindrical hole jet cooling scheme provides additional purged coolant with consistent conditions throughout the investigation. The effects are measured in engine representative transonic mainstream and coolant flow conditions where Mexit = 0.85, Reexit = 1.5 × 106, freestream turbulence intensity of 16%, and a coolant density ratio of 1.95. Four combinations of slashface Fwd and Aft cavity mass flow rate are experimentally analyzed by comparing key convective heat transfer parameters. Data is collected and reduced using a combination of IR thermography and a linear regression technique to map endwall heat transfer performance throughout the passage. A flow visualization study is employed using 100 cSt oil-based paint to gather qualitative insights into the endwall flow field. A complimentary CFD study is carried out to gather additional understanding of the endwall flow ingestion and egression behavior as well as comparing performance against a conventional cavity configuration. Experimental comparisons indicate slashface mass flow rate variations have a minor effect on passage film cooling coverage. Instead, coolant coverage across the passage is primarily driven by upstream purge coolant. However, endwall heat transfer coefficient is reduced as much as 20% in mid-passage areas as leakage flow decreases. This suggests that changes in leakage flow maintains a first order correlation in altering passage aerodynamics that, despite relatively consistent film cooling coverage, also leads to significant changes in net heat flux reduction in the passage. Endwall flow behavior proves to be complex along the gap interface showing signs of ingestion, egression, and tangential flow varying spatially throughout the gap. CFD comparisons suggests that a dual cavity configuration varies the gap static pressure distribution closer to the mainstream pressure throughout the passage in high speed applications compared to a single cavity configuration. The resulting decelerating flow creates a more stable endwall flow profile and favorable coolant environment by reducing boundary layer thinning and shear interaction in near gap endwall tangential flow. / Master of Science / Gas turbines are often exposed to high temperatures as they convert hot, energetic gas streams into mechanical motion. As turbines receive higher temperature gases, their efficiency increases and reduces waste. However, these temperatures can get too hot for turbine parts. To survive these high temperatures, turbine components are often assembled with a gap in between to allow the part to expand and contrast when it heats and cools. Relatively cold air is also fed into the gap to help prevent hot gases from entering. This cold air can also feed into other pathways to flow onto the turbine component's surface and act as an insulating layer to the hot gas and protect the component from overheating. The study presented investigates an assembly gap, referred to as a slashface gap, found in the middle of a vane located immediately after gas combustion with cold air leaking through. One unique aspect of this study is that there are two pathways for cold air, or coolant, to leak through when, typically, there is only one. The slashface gap lies on a wall which the vanes are attached to, referred to as the endwall. Multiple small holes on the endwall in between the combustor and vanes jet out coolant to try and protect the endwall from hot gases. These holes, called jump cooling holes, point out towards the vanes and angled more shallowly so that the holes do not face directly up from the endwall. The holes are angled as they are meant to gracefully spray coolant to cover and insulate the endwall instead of mixing with the hot air above. The experiments found that changing how much coolant is leaked through the slashface has little effect on how much coolant from jump cooling holes covered the endwall. However, smaller slashface leaks better protect the endwall from the hot gas by forcing it to move smoother and give off less heat across the endwall rather than a tumbling like manner. The experiment is modeled on a computer simulation to determine the differences of a slashface gap with the typical one coolant pathway and the coolant dual pathway configuration that is tested in the experiments. This simulation discovered that having two coolant pathways significantly reduces how much hot gas and jump cooling coolant enters and leaves the slashface gap. This makes the surrounding airflow along the endwall travel more smoothly and does not give off as much heat as if a single coolant pathway configuration is used instead.

Les écritures de la faim : éléments pour une ontologie de la faim / The writings of hunger : elements for an ontology of hunger / As escrituras da fome : elementos para uma ontologia da fome

Lucereau, Jérôme 13 December 2016 (has links)
The theme of hunger is recurrent in the literatures of the entire world. Primordial, original, this theme, which the lexical field is often summoned to attest to the importance of human impulses, is not yet a subject of great interest on the part of literary scholars General and compared, as well as from the philosophers. The purpose of this work is therefore to establish a representative pattern of writings of the hunger, to define typologies of hunger, to provide one or more taxonomy (s) to then deepen the critical analysis of various speeches from hunger by several topics as the identity of the hungry man, hunger myths, mysticism and fasting, the humour of the hunger, the particular consequences of hunger when it is manipulated by a political power, the ethics of starvation, etc. This broad critical analysis of the different discourses of hunger should allow to consider the credibility and the structuring elements of what could be called an "ontology of hunger" in the sense of a radical reform and rebuilding of the reports of the man and his environment. The references used in this work are not restricted to a time or a particular geographical area. We’ll tap as much in ancient literatures, classical, modern, postmodern, contemporary as well as technical studies because hunger is not the prerogative of a time or a particular civilization but raw, first and original data of the human being.
