Excellent in-house journals in South Africa : case studies of five leading publications / E. Wood

Although companies and organisations worldwide publish in-house journals, there is no comprehensive theory (including technical and normative dimensions) available on this important public relations instrument. In particular, no research is available on what the characteristics of excellent South African in-house journals are or ought to be. In this study a number of dimensions are thus introduced in order to help create a comprehensive framework for analysing in-house journals, in particular South Africa’s leading in-house journals. Firstly, James Grunig’s excellence in public relations theory (published in 1992), which incorporates the concept of two-way symmetrical communication (which in turn is informed by a “symmetric” world view), is put forward as basic point of departure. Secondly, a set of technical criteria for excellent in-house journals gleaned from a wide range of sources, is compiled. Furthermore, the internal and external environments in which South African in-house journals function are identified. The role of other new media (such as e-mail, intranet, television and radio) is also taken into account. Five leading South African in-house journals are then analysed and the views of editors reflected. It was found that Abacus (Absa Bank), Harmonise (Harmony Gold Mining Company), Hello the future (MTN), Pick ’n Patter (Pick ’n Pay) and Sandaba (Sanlam) all measured up well against the theoretical statements flowing from the said theoretical points of departure. However, the analysis did also bring to the fore deviations from the said statements which give new insight into what is required to publish an excellent in-house journal. In conclusion, the criteria are evaluated against some of the more detailed findings of the analysis and adapted to create a set of theoretically based guidelines that can be used by South African companies, focusing inter alia on how the unique character and environment of a company influence its internal communication, to create excellent in-house journals. In final analysis, it is argued that all factors, starting with the philosophical points of departure informing communication strategies, management’s attitude toward internal communication, organisation culture, the socio-political environment in which in-house journals function as well as the technical aspects of these publications, need to be considered when formulating criteria for “excellent” in-house journalism. Σε αυτήν την εργασία αξιοποιούνται οι συνεισφορές από τα τέσσερα πλέον σημαντικά επιστημονικά περιοδικά Ιστορίας της Εκπαίδευσης: History of Education Quarterly, History of Education, Historica Paedagogica και Θέματα Ιστορίας Εκπαίδευσης, τα οποία εξετάζονται σε θεματολογικό και θεωρητικό επίπεδο. Στόχος της είναι: η ανίχνευση, συστηματική καταγραφή και ανάδειξη θεματολογικών και θεωρητικών τάσεων στα τέσσερα αυτά περιοδικά το διάστημα 2004-2009, η διερεύνηση της προέλευσης, ακαδημαϊκής και γεωγραφικής των αρθρογράφων τους, προκειμένου να εξαχθούν συμπεράσματα με βάση τις πρόσφατες διεθνείς επιστημονικές εξελίξεις στην Ιστορία της Εκπαίδευσης. Πρόκειται για έρευνα σε τρία αγγλόφωνα περιοδικά και ένα ελληνικό, ή με βάση την ακαδημαϊκή προέλευση των αρθρογράφων τους δύο ευρωπαϊκά, ένα αμερικάνικό και ένα ελληνικό. Βασική σε αυτήν την εργασία είναι η αντίληψη ότι τα επιστημονικά περιοδικά αποτελούν σημαντικούς φορείς εκφοράς επιστημονικής γνώσης σε ειδικούς τομείς εκπαίδευσης. Παρουσιάζονται οι θεματικές και θεωρητικές τάσεις των τεσσάρων περιοδικών και συγκρίνονται οι σχέσεις ομοιότητας και διαφοράς που προκύπτουν. Η θεωρητική κατάταξη στηρίζεται στην αναζήτηση και τον εντοπισμό των κοινωνικών θεωριών στην εκπαίδευση και ειδικότερα στην ανίχνευση των συγκρουσιακών και φιλελεύθερων κοινωνικών θεωριών των άρθρων, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι δεν υπάρχουν και άλλες σημαντικές θεωρίες που δε συμπεριλαμβάνονται σε αυτά τα πλαίσια. Η ανάλυση δείχνει ότι τα ευρωπαϊκά περιοδικά συγκλίνουν ως προς τη θεματικής τους κατάταξη, ενώ το αμερικανικό διαφοροποιείται. Αναφορικά όμως με τη θεωρητική τους κατάταξη παρατηρείται αξιοσημείωτη ομοιογένεια. Τα αποτελέσματα συζητούνται λαμβάνοντας υπόψιν τις σχέσεις τους με τα ευρύτερα κοινωνικο-πολιτικά, οικονομικά, πολιτισμικά και εκπαιδευτικά δεδομένα, σε εθνικό και διεθνές επίπεδο. Βασική θεωρείται η αντίληψη ότι οι συστατικές συνθήκες των διανοητικών σχηματισμών αλλάζουν μαζί με τις κοινωνικές συνθήκες. Η μελέτη αυτή επικεντρώνεται στην πενταετία 2004-2009, διότι το διάστημα αυτό σημειώθηκαν ραγδαίες εξελίξεις σε όλους τους τομείς της ζωής. Η ερμηνεία των εκπαιδευτικών εξελίξεων, ειδικά των τελευταίων χρόνων και στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό, είναι αποτέλεσμα πρωτίστως των τεράστιων αλλαγών που έχουν συντελεστεί έξω από το χώρο του σχολείου: μεταβιομηχανική, μετανεωτερική κοινωνία παγκοσμιοποίηση, κοσμοπολιτισμός, πλανητική αλληλεξάρτηση, διαπολιτισμική επικοινωνία, εποχή του διεθνισμού κυριαρχία της οικονομίας της ελεύθερης αγοράς, οικονομία της γνώσης και των παγκόσμιων πόλεων μονοκρατορία μιας υπερδύναμης, κοινωνία της γνώσης ή των πληροφοριών, εποχής πληροφορίας, επιστημονική διεθνοποίηση, εισαγωγή της έννοιας του δικτύου, είναι ορισμένες από τις βασικές έννοιες που εξετάζονται. Οι συνθήκες αυτές διαμόρφωσαν και την παγκόσμια ιστορία. Από τα τέλη του 20ου αι. σημειώθηκε το τέλος των μεγάλων αφηγήσεων και των καθολικών θεωριών, που υποκίνησε την εμφάνιση των μαύρων, Λατίνων, ομοφυλοφίλων, γυναικών, αντρών, μετα-αποικιακές, μετα-κοσμικές, μετα-εθνικές, οπτικές, υλικές και άλλες ιστορίες. Τα σύγχρονα δεδομένα επιβάλλουν τη διαμόρφωση σφαιρικής ιστορικής συνείδησης, οι ιστορικοί, επιζητούν να καταστήσουν τον κόσμο ως σημείο αναφοράς. Και η εκπαίδευση προσπαθεί να συμβαδίσει με τις σύγχρονες ανάγκες των καιρών, όπως προκύπτουν από την κοινωνία της γνώσης και της πληροφορίας που ξεπρόβαλλε από την τεχνολογική επανάσταση. Μέσα σε αυτό το πλαίσιο, οι θεματικές και θεωρητικές τάσεις των τεσσάρων περιοδικών παρουσιάζονται, οι βασικοί θεωρητικοί και θεματικοί τους άξονες περιγράφονται και οι ιδιαίτερες σχέσεις τους με την κοινωνική πραγματικότητα αξιολογούνται. Τα συμπεράσματα που προκύπτον είναι ενδεικτικά της στενής σχέσης που υπάρχει μεταξύ εκπαίδευσης και κοινωνίας και λειτουργούν ενθαρρυντικά για περαιτέρω έρευνα, και προτρεπτικά για μεγαλύτερη συμμετοχή των Ελλήνων κυρίως επιστημόνων στο διεθνή επιστημονικό χώρο Iστορίας της Εκπαίδευσης. / In this study the contributions of the most important scientific journals in the History of Education, are valuated in a thematological and theoritical level. Its aim is: the detection, systematic recording and appointment of thematological and theoritical tendencies og this four magazines during the period 2004-2009, the investigation of the origin, academic and geografic of the writters, in order to conduct conclusions due to the recent international scientific developments ih the History of Education. It involves research into three anglophone magazines and one greek or due to ths academic origin of its writters, two europpean, one american and one greek. Basic to this work is the view that scintific magazines constitute significant institutions of scientific knowledge of srecific aducational sectors.The thematological and theoritical tedencies of ths four journals are presented and the relations of difference and resemblance are compared. The theoretical classification is supported in the search and the localisation of social theories in the education and more specifically in the detection the conflict and liberal social theories of the articles, without meaning the absence of other important theories that are not included in these frames.The analysis shows that the European magazines converge as for their thematic classification, while American is differentiated. Relatively however with their theoretical classification is observed remarkable homogeneity.The results are discussed taking in mind their relations with the wider sociopolitical, economically, cultural and educational data, in national and international level. Basic is considered the perception that the constitutive conditions of mental shapings change with the social conditions. This study is focused in the period 2004-2009, because during this interval rapid developments in all the sectors of life were taken place. The interpretation of educational developments, specifically the last years and in Greece and in the abroad, is result of mainly enormous changes that has taken place outside from the space of school: industrial society globalisation, cosmopolitanism, planitjki' interdependence, cross-cultural communication, season of internationalism sovereignty of economy of free market, economy of knowledge and world cities autocracy of superpower, society of knowledge or information, season of information, scientific internationalisation, import of significance of network, are certain from the basic significances that are examined.This conditions shaped also the world history. The 20th century was marked by the end of big narrations and catholic theories, that instigated the appearance of blacks, Latins, homosexuals, women, men, colonial, secular, national, optical, material and other histories. The modern data impose the configuration of overall historical conscience, the historians, seek to render the world as point of report. Education as well tries to keeps pace with the modern needs of times, as they result from the society of knowledge and information that emerged from the technological revolution. In this frame, the thematic and theoretical tendencies of four journals are presented, their main theoretical and thematic axes are described, their particular relations with the social reality are also evaluated. The conclusions that emegre are indicatively of narrow relation that exists between education and society and function encouraging for further research, and bigger attendance of Greek mainly scientists in the international scientific space of History of Education.

La thèse se propose d'explorer les rapports entre utopie et littérature chez deux auteurs majeurs du XXe siècle italien, Elio Vittorini (1908-1966) et Italo Calvino (1923-1985), prenant en considération un large pan de leurs œuvres et de leur travail d'écrivain. À travers ce parcours, c'est une petite parabole de l'utopisme littéraire dans le second XXe siècle italien que l'on cherche à tracer, en partant des années quarante, où le travail littéraire était fonction d'un engagement politique externe, pour arriver, à travers une série de déconvenues politiques et de transformations sociales, à une tentative de redéfinition des fonctions politiques de la littérature qui nous mène jusqu'aux années soixante-dix. La trentaine d'années parcourue dans cette thèse est en effet riche en évolutions, du détachement des écrivains du Parti communiste, au passage à une nouvelle phase « néocapitaliste » dont l'Italie sort considérablement transformée. Nous nous trouvons donc à l'articulation entre deux périodes, moderne et postmoderne, dans une transition qui correspond aussi à une crise et à une remise en question de l'utopie, à travers les notions de progrès, de perfectibilité, de téléologie et de totalité qui lui étaient liées. Notre recherche cherche à cerner ces évolutions et leurs retombées sur le travail littéraire de nos écrivains – travail d'écriture bien sûr, mais aussi travail critique et théorique sur la définition de la littérature et ses fonctions. Cependant, elle évolue également sur un second plan : celui d'une définition des modèles utopiques en littérature, les œuvres dont nous nous occupons mettant en place, dans leurs rapports plus ou moins lointains au genre utopique, un certain type d'utopisme littéraire. Après une partie d'introduction théorique se concentrant sur les définitions possibles de l'utopie, nous partons donc de Vittorini et de l' « utopisme culturel » des années du Politecnico, revue animée par l'auteur entre 1945 et 1947, chapitre auquel répond l'analyse des œuvres Conversazione in Sicilia (Conversation en Sicile, 1941) et Le città del mondo (Les Villes du monde, 1951-1956). Une longue étude est ensuite consacrée au Menabò, revue dirigée par les deux auteurs entre 1959 et 1966, au cœur d'une crise poétique, politique, épistémologique dont la revue se fait l'écho. Sont parcourues en miroir deux « œuvres de la crise », Le donne di Messina (Les Femmes de Messine, 1964) de Vittorini et La giornata d'uno scrutatore (La Journée d'un scrutateur, 1963) de Calvino. Une dernière partie se concentre sur le Calvino « utopiste » des années parisiennes, de sa passion pour Fourier à sa formulation de l' « utopia pulviscolare », une utopie pulvérisée, spatialisée, anti-téléologique, dont les Città invisibili (Les Villes invisibles, 1972) sont la mise en forme littéraire, constituant le point d'arrivée de notre parcours. / This Phd intends to explore the relationship between utopia and literature among two major writers of the Italian Twentieth century, Elio Vittorini (1908 – 1966) and Italo Calvino (1923 – 1985), taking into account a wide range of their novels and other literary output. Through this journey we are seeking to produce a parable of literary utopianism in the second Italian Twentieth Century, starting from the Forties, where literary work was related to an external political commitment to arrive, through a series of political disappointments and societal transformations to an attempt at redefining literature's political functions that leads us to the Seventies. The period of around thirty years covered by this thesis is rich in evolutions, from the estrangement of the Communist Party writers to a new 'neocapitalist' phase from which Italy emerges profoundly transformed. At the end of the Seventies, we were at the juncture of two periods, modern and postmodern, in a transition that also corresponds to a crisis and a questioning of utopia, through the notions of progress, perfectibility, teleology and totality that were connected to it. Our research attempts to outline these evolutions and their consequences on the work of writers – their literary production, but also their critical and theoretical work on the definition of literature and its functions. However, my thesis also functions at another level, and attempts a definition of utopian models in literature, as the selected books are all characterised, in their more or less distant relationship with the utopian genre, by a certain type of literary utopianism. After a theoretical introduction focusing on the possible definitions of utopia, we start with Vittorini and the 'cultural utopianism' of the Politecnico years, a journal animated by the author between 1945 and 1947, in a chapter where we also study Conversazione in Sicilia (Conversations in Sicily, 1941) and Le città del mondo (“The cities of the world”, 1951 – 1956). A long study is subsequently dedicated to Menabò, a journal directed by the two authors between 1959 and 1966, that reflected a poetical, political and epistemologistical crisis. We compare two 'works of crisis', Le donne di Messina (Women of Messina, 1964) by Vittorini and La giornata di uno scrutatore (The Watcher, 1963) by Calvino. A last part concentrates on the 'utopian' Calvino of the Parisian years, from his passion for Fourier to his formulation of the 'utopia pulviscolare', a shattered, spatialised, anti-teological utopia of which Le Città invisibili (Invisible Cities, 1972) is the literary embodiment and the point of arrival of our journey.

The thesis titled Transformations of view on the teaching of social sciences from 1989 (in selected specialized journals) discusses the history and development of social science disciplines. The thesis is divided into two parts theoretical and practical. The theoretical part describes brief development of the Czech education from the perspective of teaching social sciences from 1774 to 2014. This section is divided into two parts the first shows the development of education from 1774 to 1989; the second section is dedicated to the development of teaching civic education after 1989. Diploma thesis reflects significant milestones in the historical development and transformation of civic education. The practical part is focused on the analysis of the view of the teaching of social sciences since 1989 and the capture of various effords, trends and changes reflected in specialized journals. In this thesis was used the method of analysis and comparison of theoretical expertise and popular educational texts. The most recent and most frequent topics of social sciences, which were discussed in specialized journals, were ethical education, media education, sex education and multicultural education. The thesis shows both opinions of experts and educators and the views of students and their parents.

This magazine may be considered one of the first journals in education established in the state of São Paulo at the time of the First Republic. Produced by professors of the Secondary Normal School of São Carlos, the magazine intended to intervene in education and training in a meaningful and productive way by producing theoretical and practical guidelines, educational innovation to the teaching of subjects belonging to the curriculum of primary school and by articulating the dissemination of republican ideas to foster the cultural development of the state and nation. In this context, the present research aims to know the ideas and actions of the collaborator authors of the Revista da Escola Normal de São Carlos. The issues in the regular publication contributed to the dissemination of concepts and ideas attuned to the educational problems of the social changes underway in the years 1910 and 1920.

Due to the care undertaken by Brazilian funding agencies, such as the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (originally Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – CAPES) and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (originally Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico – CNPq), it is evident the role of scientific journals in the academic context as indicators performance both for the institutions and for the researchers. After all, it is they which make public the researches developed after proper peer review, ensuring value to the publicized contents. The purpose is, therefore, analyze the production of postgraduate studies in information science (CI), through the national electronic journals listed in the Capes Journal Portal and qualified at concepts from A1 to B2, to identify the current state of research in the area. After that, operational objectives are: (1) discuss the science, their relations and contextualization within contemporary society; (2) explore the academic production in the contemporaneity contemplating the prospects of electronic journals; (3) identify the most debated topics in CI, through the analysis of articles published from 2003 to 2013; (4) detect the topics of articles aiming to project thematic similarities and differences within the interdisciplinarity, including the identification of important issues and not covered. To achieve the objectives, in theoretical terms, discusses, initially, the science in contemporary society, following chapter about the foundations of CI and its relation to scientific communication, in which emphasize perspectives and interdisciplinary relationships and research lines of the area of knowledge focused. The fourth chapter evidences the scientific journals with emphasis on electronic context. The methodological approach (chapter five) covers the typology of search (bibliographic of nature descriptive / case study) in time that discusses the techniques of collecting and analyzing data. Among the results discussed (chapter six), it is impossible review them all, cited some items. Regarding the current research situation, it verifies that increase research in CI follows the expansion of the Graduate Programs in Information Science (originally Programas de Pós-Graduação em Ciências da Informação – PPGCI) and expands as found in electronic journals, the means to intensify scientific communication and ratify interdisciplinary relations. Thus, records 48 theme categories in CI. Among them, Management has the highest incidence (191 articles), as opposed to classes as Administration and Environment and Sustainability, both with only seven studies. The year 2012, among the analyzed period, is the highest production rate. The library science, in turn, it has the highest number of interdisciplinary relations. In the end, are the concluding remarks of the study and the list of bibliographic and electronic sources consulted in drawing up the text. / Com a explosão documental e as múltiplas possibilidades de acesso à informação proporcionadas pelas tecnologias de informação e de comunicação, percebe-se a proliferação de publicações de todos os tipos, como os periódicos científicos eletrônicos, que facilitam o acesso e a divulgação das pesquisas empreendidas e permite maior agilidade na recuperação de informação. Diante dos cuidados empreendidos por órgãos brasileiros de fomento, como a Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes) e o Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), é evidente o relevo da função dos periódicos científicos no contexto acadêmico como indicadores de desempenho tanto para as instituições quanto para os pesquisadores. Afinal, são eles que tornam públicas as pesquisas desenvolvidas após a devida avaliação pelos pares, o que assegura valor aos conteúdos publicizados. Objetiva-se, pois, em termos amplos, analisar a produção de pós-graduação em ciência da informação (CI), por meio dos periódicos científicos eletrônicos nacionais constantes do Portal de Periódicos da Capes e qualificados em conceitos de A1 a B2, para identificar a situação atual da pesquisa na área. A partir daí, são objetivos operacionais: (1) discutir a ciência, suas relações e contextualizações no âmbito da sociedade contemporânea; (2) explorar a produção acadêmica na contemporaneidade contemplando as perspectivas dos periódicos científicos eletrônicos; (3) identificar as temáticas mais debatidas em CI, por meio da análise dos artigos publicados no período de 2003 a 2013; (4) detectar os temas dos artigos visando conceber semelhanças e diferenças temáticas no âmbito da interdisciplinaridade, incluindo a identificação de temas importantes e não contemplados. Para a consecução dos objetivos, em termos teóricos, discute-se, de início, a ciência na sociedade contemporânea, seguindo capítulo acerca dos fundamentos da CI e sua relação com a comunicação científica, em que se destacam perspectivas e relações interdisciplinares e linhas de investigação da área de conhecimento enfocada. O quarto capítulo evidencia os periódicos científicos com ênfase no contexto eletrônico. O caminho metodológico (capítulo cinco) abrange a tipologia da pesquisa (bibliográfica de natureza descritiva / estudo de caso) ao tempo em que discorre as técnicas de coleta e análise de dados. Dentre os resultados discutidos (capítulo seis), na impossibilidade de rever todos eles, mencionam-se alguns itens. A respeito da situação atual de pesquisa, verifica-se que o incremento da pesquisa em CI acompanha a expansão dos Programas de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Informação (PPGCI) e se expande à medida que encontra nos periódicos eletrônicos, os meios para intensificar a comunicação científica e ratificar relações interdisciplinares. Destarte, registram-se 48 categorias temáticas em CI. Dentre elas, Gestão apresenta a incidência mais elevada (191 artigos) em contraposição às classes Administração e Meio Ambiente e Sustentabilidade, ambas com apenas sete estudos. O ano de 2012, dentre o período analisado, é o de maior índice de produção. A biblioteconomia, por sua vez, aparece com o maior número de relações interdisciplinares. Ao final, estão as considerações finais do estudo e a listagem de fontes bibliográficas e eletrônicas consultadas para elaboração do texto.

Estas ajudaram a configurar e constituir identidades, principalmente no que se refere à questão da sexualidade e da masculinidade, estabelecendo espaços de negociação na modernização dos costumes, em meio a uma reforma conservadora. Dessa maneira, a pornografia do período incorporou formas de normalizar o leitor das revistas através de posicionamentos, colaborações dos leitores e formas de resistência, através de anonimatos e publicações proibidas. Com isso, diluídas em uma área cinzenta de um processo mais complexo e contraditório, vários enunciados vindos da sociedade tentaram criar um discurso “verdadeiro” sobre o sexo, o qual acabou assimilado pelo mercado, e que pretendemos desnudar. A partir do pensamento histórico genealógico de Michel Foucault, procuraremos indicar que a pornografia enquanto “desordem do discurso” abriu espaço para visões diversas, que são contrárias ao discurso homogeneizante de poder e masculinidade. O público dessas revistas se mostrava amplo e contava com estudantes do colegial (Ensino Médio), senhores, senhoras, “homossexuais”, generais, moças, médicos e padres que leram e emitiram diversos discursos sobre estes dois grupos, aparentemente distintos, de periódicos: as revistas softcore com discurso normatizador, como: Ele Ela (1969), Status (1974), Homem (1975), esta que depois fora transformada na revista Playboy (1978) - e outra mais explícita, as revistas hardcore, transgressora de discursos e consumida principalmente pelas classes populares: os “catecismos” de Carlos Zéfiro (década de 50 a 70 no Rio de Janeiro), as publicações das editoras Edrel (São Paulo-SP) e Grafipar (Curitiba-PR), além de revistas hardcore e das fotonovelas eróticas. Os periódicos indicados nos ajudarão a compreender essa afirmação e construção das identidades do homem brasileiro moderno. / The field of Brazilian culture during the period of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985), was gradually invaded by certain types of confusing publications: the erotic and pornographic magazines. These helped to shape and form the identities, especially in regard to the issue of sexuality and masculinity, establishing trading channels in the modernization of customs, in a conservative reform. Thus, the period of pornography incorporated ways to normalize the reader of magazines through placements, contributions from readers and forms of resistance through anonymity and banned publications. As a result, diluted in a gray area of a more complex and contradictory process, various statements coming from the company tried to create a “true” speech about sex, which eventually assimilated by the market, and we intend to denude. From the genealogical historical thought of Michel Foucault, we seek to indicate that the pornography while "disorder of speech" created room for different views that are contrary to the homogenizing discourse of masculinity. The audience of these magazines is proved large and had high school students, older mans and womans, "gay", generals, younger womens, doctors and priests who had read and issued discourses on these two groups of apparently distincts periodicals: the softcore magazines with speech normalizing, like: Ele Ela (1969), Status (1974), A revista do Homem (1975), this which was transformed in the magazine call Playboy (1978) - and a more explicit, the hardcore magazine, transgressive discourses and mostly consumed by the lower classes: the "cathecisms" of Carlos Zéfiro (from the 50s to 70s, in Rio de Janeiro), the publications of Edrel (São Paulo-SP) and Grafipar (Curitiba-PR) publishers. These indicated periodics help us to understand this identity statement of the modern man.

To this end we use the concepts of Michel De Certeau on the concept of strategy for the development of journalistic discourses, the category of representation of Roger Chartier to relate the understand of progress recorded in the journals. The focus of these representations of civility and progress has been analyzed in discursive disagreements, fights and the analysis done by their own parochial on this subject in journals. This analysis was performed in the eyes of the organizational structure of its own journal for this task we use the concepts of analysis Mouilland about the layout of newspapers and will also help the discourse analysis of Eni Orlandi. We see several ways to represent the progress and the ways it’s midst came to influence the partisan disputes existing in Pernambuco demonstrating the political culture. Together we look at the disputes thatoccured in the leaves of newspapers held by conservatives and liberals in order to get space on the political scene of Pernambuco making use of their own concepts of progress and modernity. / Neste trabalho propomos tratar das formas como os pernambucanos na primeira metade do Século XIX, percebiam e discursavam sobre a concepção de progresso na província, suas relações com as práticas vindas da Europa, modelo de civilidade, representadas em discursos jornalísticos que circulavam na província, principalmente a capital. Para tal faremos uso das concepções de Michel De Certeau quanto ao conceito de estratégia para a elaboração dos discursos jornalísticos, a categoria de representação do Roger Chartier para relacionarmos o entendimento de progresso inscrito nos periódicos. O foco destas representações de civilidade e de progresso foi analisado nos desencontros discursivos, nas brigas e nas análises feitas pelos próprios provincianos sobre a temática nos periódicos. Esta análise foi realizada aos olhos da estrutura organizacional do próprio periódico, e para tal tarefa, utilizamos as concepções de análise do Mouilland quanto à diagramação dos jornais e nos auxiliamos também pela análise de discurso da Eni Orlandi. Percebemos diversas formas de representar o progresso e as formas como seus meandros chegaram a influenciar nas disputas partidárias existentes em Pernambuco demonstrando a cultura política. Conjuntamente analisamos as disputas ocorridas nasfolhas dos jornais realizadas por conservadores e liberais com o intuito de conseguir espaços no cenário político de Pernambuco fazendo uso de conceitos próprios de progresso e modernidade.

Existe uma perspectiva teórica que afirma que os diversos motivos para que artigos sejam citados transitam entre dois polos chamados universalista e social-construtivista. Características como originalidade dos resultados e rigor metodológico são classificados como fatores universalistas; enquanto características como fama do autor e prestígio do periódico são classificados como social-construtivistas. Diante dessa perspectiva teórica, se coloca a questão de pesquisa desta tese: quais fatores do polo social-construtivista influenciam as citações que um artigo sobre contabilidade recebe no âmbito da pesquisa contábil brasileira? Para responder essa questão, fez-se uma coleta de dados de 2.540 artigos, publicados por revistas brasileiras de contabilidade, entre os anos de 2007 e 2012. Para a análise desses dados, utilizaram-se estatísticas descritivas, correlação de Pearson e teste de qui-quadrado, análise de correspondência e regressão binomial negativa. Foram criadas 16 hipóteses de fatores que influenciam a quantidade de citações dos artigos, sendo, totalmente, aceitas as hipóteses sobre a influência dos fatores afiliação institucional do primeiro autor, revista em que o artigo foi publicado, linha de pesquisa e número de referências no artigo. Mostraram-se estatisticamente significantes, em apenas determinadas circunstâncias, as hipóteses sobre a influência da quantidade de autores, do gênero do primeiro autor, da titulação do primeiro autor, do estrato do Qualis da revista e da idade da revista, assim, portanto, foram apenas parcialmente aceitas. Foram rejeitadas as hipóteses sobre a influência do número de termos no título do artigo e nas palavras-chave, do número de páginas, da posição do artigo e do tipo de edição, da proporção de autoras e da abordagem de análise dos dados. A aceitação das hipóteses sobre afiliação, revista, linha de pesquisa e número de páginas indica que há influência do polo teórico social-construtivista no padrão de citações na pesquisa contábil brasileira. Contudo, a rejeição das demais doze hipóteses mostram que essa influência é menor que no âmbito internacional, no qual mais hipóteses desse polo são aceitas. Assim, no Brasil, o padrão de citações de pesquisas é influenciado por características construídas socialmente e valorizadas pela comunidade científica. / There is a theoretical perspective that maintains that the various reasons that lead to articles being cited fall between two poles called universalist and social-constructivist. characteristics such as originality of results and rigorous methodology are classified as universalist factors, and characteristics such as author\'s prestige and journal\'s prestige are classified as social-constructivist. With this perspective in mind, the research question of this dissertation is posed: what are factors that influence the citations received by a paper within the scenario of Brazilian accounting research? To answer this question, we collected data from 2,540 papers published in Brazilian accounting academic journals between 2007 and 2012. The data analysis is based on descriptive statistics, Pearson\'s correlation and chi-square test, correspondence analysis, and negative binomial regression. We created 16 hypotheses of factors that influenced the number of times articles were quoted. The rejected hypotheses were the ones about the influence of the number of terms in the title or in the keywords of the paper, the number of pages, the position of the article and the type of edition, the proportion of female authors, and the data analysis approach (qualitative or quantitative). The following hypotheses were only statistically significant in certain circumstances, and thus, were only partially accepted: the influence of the number of authors, the gender of the first author, the academic degree of the first author, the Qualis grade of the journal, and the age of the journal. The totally accepted hypotheses were the ones about the influence of the factors such as the institutional affiliation of the first author, the journal in which the paper was published, the research line, and the number of references in the article. From these results, we can state that, in Brazil, the citation pattern of a paper is influenced by social-constructivist criteria, but to a lesser degree than that of the international context, in which more social-constructivist hypotheses are accepted. Therefore, in Brazil, the citation pattern is influenced by characteristics that are socially constructed and valued by the scientific community.
