"Det är svårt att gå i två klasser samtidigt" : En studie om nyanlända elever i den svenska skolan / "It is difficult to go into two classes simultaneously" : a study of new arrived students in Swedish school

Agrali, Dilem January 2009 (has links)

The essay aims to highlight the newly arrived immigrant students’ experience of social integration and social security in the Swedish school system, which is important for their further language and learning development. This essay aims to see it from the student's perspective. The main question in this essay is: What factors seem to matter the most for the newly arrived immigrant students in their language and learning skills, and what does the students themselves think about the issue? The study is based on a qualitative research method in the form of interviews and observations conducted in a multicultural school for a period of two weeks. Three newly-arrived students are in this essay being observed while they are attending between two different classrooms: the so-called preparation classroom and the ordinary classroom. This essay aims to highlight a newly arrived student's development from a socio-cultural perspective. The results show that the newly arrived students felt more emotionally secure while attending the preparation classrooms, and while attending the ordinary classrooms they felt more inadequate.

Feysal, Huda January 2022 (has links)
Today’s modern society is multicultural, school is therefore a meeting place for pupils withdifferent experiences, prior knowledge, and mother tongue. Second language students whohave not yet developed good skills in various subject languages, face several challenges inupper secondary school. To succeed in different school subjects these students need todevelop language that is specialized for each school subject. The purpose of this study is toexamine how social science teachers in the upper secondary school experience and work withsecond language students who have difficulties with content-based language. The appliedmethod in the study is qualitative interviews. The theoretical framework is based on differentconcepts of literacy to analyze the results. The results in this study show that the teachers useboth similar and different methods to develop second language students’ understanding ofconcepts, reading, and writing skills, subject language, and subject knowledge. However, several differences between teachers’ perceptions and approaches are also discerned. Theteachers in this study understand the importance of placing the language in focus within thesubject, however some of the teachers experience difficulties with integrating language andsubject into the teaching.

I work on the basis of a language and knowledge development approach. Or do I?”

Vatansever, Baki January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of how Swedish teachers approach language and knowledge-developing working methods and to make the teachers self-understanding visible in the working method. The study consists of four interviews with Swedish teachers in middle school in Central Sweden. The study shows that teachers have a positive attitude towards language and knowledge development working methods in Swedish teaching and believe that they have a vital role in student language development. However, the results show that there are differences between the teachers and how they practice the working method depending on what experiences they have and which school they work at. There is some resistance where we can see a tendency for the conservative subject tradition to remain based on the fact that teachers have difficulty cooperating and letting other teachers into their own teaching. Furthermore, the results show that all teachers in one way or another work with language and knowledge development methods in Swedish teaching. From the teacher statements, it is clear that they are influenced by Vygotsky's socio-cultural perspective and Halliday's systemic functional grammar. The differences between the teachers are large and only two teachers are aware of the theories and working models, while the other two are unaware of them. This visibility, which is also advocacy, can at best raise teachers’ professional awareness and help to enable collegial conversations about how language and knowledge development teaching can be developed.

Uttrycksformernas potential : En intervjustudie om hur multimodala arbetssätt kan differentiera lågstadieundervisningen / The potential of expressions : An interview study about how multimodal practices can differentiate instruction in primary school

Gabrielsson, Joanna January 2023 (has links)
This interview study examines the relation between multimodal practices and differentiated instruction, to investigate if multimodal practices could offer a way to meet all students, without exclusion during literacy instruction. The aim is to contribute with knowledge about multimodal differentiated literacy instruction which meets all students, helps them to learn and develop knowledge. The research questions that will be answered are: How do teachers describe that differentiated instruction is made possible? What possibilities and obstacles for students’ language and knowledge development are identified by the teachers? The theoretical frame is based on the research area of multimodality, differentiated instruction, and to scaffold language and knowledge development. Moreover, a theoretical model about reading practices is used to discuss the result of the study. The material was gathered through qualitative semi-structured interviews and the analyzed through thematic analysis. The result shows that possibilities with multimodal practice include making teaching content more understandable together with opportunities of processing and deepening it to support language and knowledge development within a context. The later can contribute to make early literacy instruction differentiated, because more students get a chance to understand, learn and participate. Although, obstacles appear since instruction might come across as irregular, contain too much stimulus, lose context or students might avoid challenges if they choose what form of expression to use.
