Outcomes of a Sheltered Collaborative Teaching Model for English Language Learners

The purpose of this study was to record and analyze experiences of teachers implementing a sheltered collaborative teaching model for second language learners. This study also analyzed the effect of this model on the on-time graduation rate of limited English proficient students. Discussing the experiences of teachers involved in this model provided valuable information that can be used to refine instruction and improve ELLs cultural assimilation, self-motivation, and involvement in co-curricular activities. The mixed methods design study taking both a phenomenological and quasi-experimental case study approach focused on collecting experiences from teachers and graduation data to determine the outcomes of the collaborative instructional model. The context of this study was two high schools in a suburban school district in central Virginia. The participants were seven teachers who have implemented the collaborative model within the last two years. Triangulation of the data sources included interviews with the participants, field notes, and archival data. Both NVivo and Statistical Package for Social Sciences were used in coding and describing the data. Results of this study are presented in narrative descriptions of the experiences of the participants and a descriptive report of the graduation data. Themes resulting from the analysis across all the narratives are discussed within the framework of ELL academic success. Both graduation data and teacher reports are discussed to determine the effect of this instructional model on the on-time graduation rate. / Ed. D.

Caractérisation morphologique et moléculaire du néphroblastome, du blastème et de la région chromosomique 11p15 en particulier / Morphologic and molecular carachterisation of Wilms tumor focusing on blastema and 11p15 region

La tumeur de Wilms (WT) est la tumeur du rein la plus fréquente chez l'enfant âgé de moins de 5 ans. Bien que la majorité des enfants avec WT soit aujourd'hui soignée, 10 à 15% rechutent. L'identification de nouveaux marqueurs pronostic au diagnostic est donc nécessaire. Nous avons centralisé le matériel biologique de toutes les WTs françaises inclus dans le protocole SIOP-2001. Le blastème, la composante histologique la plus agressive de ces tumeurs, a été caractérisé par une analyse qualitative (architecture et aspect cytologique, index mitotique et prolifératif) et quantitative (volume et pourcentage). En collaboration avec les équipes européennes du Renal Tumor Study Group nous avons caractérisé les anomalies structurales de la WT par Multiple Ligation Probe Amplification (MLPA). De plus, nous nous sommes focalisés sur la région 11p15, où le gène IGF2 est localisé, en analysant les anomalies structurales et de méthylation au niveau de différents loci (IGF2-DMR0, ICR1, ICR2, H19), par MLPA et par ASMM RTQ- PCR (TaqMan allele-specific methylated multiplex real-time quantitative PCR). Nous avons de plus étudié l'expression d'IGF2 par RT-QPCR. Une dernière partie de notre étude a porté sur la caractérisation de la réponse immune intratumorale par immunohistochimie (CD3, CD4, CD8, PD1, PDL1). En conclusion, nous avons identifié des potentiels marqueurs pronostiques concernant la prise en charge des WTs: volume et pourcentage de blastème, index mitotique et de prolifération, perte de méthylation d'IGF2-DMR0 et rapport CD4/CD8. Ce travail pourrait contribuer à la détermination d'une nouvelle classification bio-pathologique de la WT. / Wilms tumor (WT) is the most common tumor of the kidney in children aged under 5 years. Although the majority of children with WT survives, 10-15% relapse. The identification of new prognosis markers at diagnosis is necessary. We centralized the biological material of all French WTs included in the SIOP-2001 protocol. The blastema, the most aggressive histological component of these tumors, was characterized by qualitative (architectural and cytological aspect, proliferative and mitotic index) and quantitative analysis (amount and percentage). In collaboration with European teams Renal Tumor Study Group we characterized the structural abnormalities of the WT by Multiple Ligation Probe Amplification (MLPA). In addition, we focused on the 11p15 region, where the IGF2 gene is located, analyzing the structural abnormalities and methylation at different loci (IGF2-DMR0, ICR1, ICR2, H19) by MLPA and ASMM RTQ - PCR (TaqMan allele-specific methylated multiplex quantitative real-time PCR). We also studied the expression of IGF2 by RT-QPCR. A final part of our study focused on the characterization of intratumoral immune response by immunohistochemistry (CD3, CD4, CD8, PD1, PDL1). In conclusion, we identified potential prognostic markers for the management of WTs: volume and percentage of blastema, mitotic and proliferation index, loss of IGF2 methylation-DMR0 and CD4 / CD8 ratio. This could contribute to the determination of a new bio-pathological classification of WT.

Studiens syfte är att få en djupare förståelse för hur svensklärare ställer sig till språk- och kunskapsutvecklande arbetssätt och synliggöra lärarnas självförståelse i arbetssättet. Studien består av fyra intervjuer med svensklärare på mellanstadiet i Mellansverige som arbetar som ämneslärare. Studien visar att lärarna har en positiv inställning till språk- och kunskapsutvecklande arbetssätt i svenskundervisningen och anser således att de har en vital roll i eleverna språkliga utveckling. Dock framgår det i resultatet att det skiljer sig åt mellan lärarna och hur de praktiserar arbetssättet beroende på vilka erfarenheter de har och vilken skola de arbetar på. Ett visst motstånd finns där man kan notera en tendens på att den konservativa ämnestraditionen finns kvar utifrån att lärare har svårt att samarbeta och släppa in andra lärare i den egna undervisningen. Vidare visar resultatet att samtliga lärare på ett eller annat sätt arbetar med språk- och kunskapsutvecklande arbetssätt i svenskundervisningen. Utifrån lärarnas utlåtanden är det tydligt att de är influerade av Vygotskijs sociokulturella perspektiv och Hallidays systemiska funktionella grammatik. Skillnaderna mellan lärarna är stora och det är enbart två lärare som är medvetna i teorierna och arbetsmodellerna medan de övriga två är omedvetna om dem. Detta synliggörande, som också är en förspråkligande, kan i bästa fall höja lärares professionella medvetenhet och bidra till att möjliggöra kollegiala samtal om hur språk- och kunskapsutvecklande undervisning kan utvecklas. / The purpose of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of how Swedish teachers approach language and knowledge-developing working methods and to make the teachers self-understanding visible in the working method. The study consists of four interviews with Swedish teachers in middle school in Central Sweden. The study shows that teachers have a positive attitude towards language and knowledge development working methods in Swedish teaching and believe that they have a vital role in student language development. However, the results show that there are differences between the teachers and how they practice the working method depending on what experiences they have and which school they work at. There is some resistance where we can see a tendency for the conservative subject tradition to remain based on the fact that teachers have difficulty cooperating and letting other teachers into their own teaching. Furthermore, the results show that all teachers in one way or another work with language and knowledge development methods in Swedish teaching. From the teacher statements, it is clear that they are influenced by Vygotsky's socio-cultural perspective and Halliday's systemic functional grammar. The differences between the teachers are large and only two teachers are aware of the theories and working models, while the other two are unaware of them. This visibility, which is also advocacy, can at best raise teachers’ professional awareness and help to enable collegial conversations about how language and knowledge development teaching can be developed.

Today's classrooms are filled with an ethnically and linguistically diverse population of students. In order for Limited English Proficient (LEP) high school students to be academically successful and meet the goals of No Child Left Behind 2001, they must learn academic English. As an art teacher, I understand the importance of art in a student's general education. However, could a high school art class, also, act as a tool for teaching LEP students the English language? My goal, through the use of action research, is to find an effective way to set up an English as a Second Language (ESL) Level 1 art class, thus, giving students the benefits of art while furthering their English language development.

Assim, realizou-se pesquisa exploratória e descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa, que adotou como estratégia de investigação o desenvolvimento de um estudo de caso, o qual foi fundamentado em teoria relativa à dinâmica das mudanças nas rotinas organizacionais e suas relações com artefatos e tecnologia, sob uma perspectiva sociológica. A principal fonte de evidências da pesquisa decorreu da aplicação de 15 entrevistas semiestruturadas, complementadas por pesquisa documental e observações de campo. Os resultados demonstraram que as motivações e estratégias organizacionais que nortearam o projeto de implantação do SIOP foram originadas a partir da obsolescência do antigo sistema utilizado e dos riscos que o seu uso representava. Quanto às mudanças planejadas pelos designers do SIOP em relação à rotina de elaboração de alterações orçamentárias, constatou-se maior ênfase à proposição de soluções relativas à tecnologia da informação, não sendo identificadas intenções claras sobre a implementação de mudanças na rotina, sobretudo em seu aspecto ostensivo. No que tange à ocorrência de mudanças na rotina de elaboração de alterações orçamentárias com a implantação e uso do sistema, os resultados evidenciam a ocorrência de mudanças endógenas e contínuas, oriundas da dinâmica interna da rotina examinada, com a interação entre os aspectos ostensivo e performativo e o referido artefato tecnológico, apresentando resultados mais significativos no aspecto performativo, com a simplificação das operações, o aumento da agilidade e rapidez na execução da rotina, o aumento da autonomia dos participantes, a facilidade ao acesso e tratamento das informações, a redução do tempo de execução da rotina, o aumento da confiabilidade dos resultados produzidos e a redução da possibilidade de ocorrência de erros. Os resultados ainda indicam que as performances ocorridas no âmbito da rotina, após a implantação do SIOP, influenciaram mudanças no referido artefato, viabilizadas pela realização de fórum de discussão entre designers e usuários do sistema. Dessa forma, os dados empíricos analisados evidenciam a influência mútua e a dinâmica e complexa interação entre a rotina e o artefato estudados, caracterizando a ocorrência de mudanças emergentes da implantação e uso do SIOP. _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The study had as main objective to characterize the routine of elaboration of federal budget alterations changes, resulting from the implantation and use the Integrated System of Planning and Budget (SIOP). Thus, it was performed an exploratory and descriptive research with a qualitative approach and development of a case study. The study was based in theory on the dynamics of changes in organizational routines and their relationships with artifacts and technology, under a sociological perspective. The main source of research evidences resulted from fifteen semi-structured interviews, supplemented by documentary research and field observations. The results showed that the motivations and organizational strategies that guided the project to implement the SIOP were originated from the decay of the old system used in the routine. As for the changes planned by the SIOP designers regarding the routine of elaboration of federal budget alterations, there was a higher emphasis on proposing solutions related to information technology while clear intentions to implementing changes in routine weren't identified, especially in its ostensive aspect. Regarding the occurrence of changes in the routine of elaboration of federal budget alterations from the implantation and use of the system, the results indicate the occurrence of endogenous and continuous changes arising from the internal dynamics of the examined routine, that show the interaction between the ostensive and performative aspects and the technological artifact. Thus, significant results were observed in the performative aspect: further simplification of operations, increased agility and execution speed of the routine, increased participants' autonomy, the ease access and processing of information, reducing the runtime routine, increase the reliability of the produced results and reducing the possibility of errors. The results also indicate that the performances occurred within the routine, after the implementation of SIOP, influenced changes in that artifact, which was possible by performing a forum for discussion between system designers and users. Thus, the empirical data analyzed show the mutual influence and the dynamic and complex interaction between the routine and the artifact studied, characterizing the occurrence of emerging changes from the implantation and use of SIOP.

Språkinriktad undervisning : En kvalitativ klassrumsstudie om språkinriktad undervisning i SO för alla elever.

Detta är en kvalitativ observationsstudie vars syfte har varit att bidra med kunskap om hur lärare från förskoleklass till och med årskurs 6 arbetar med språket i undervisningen i de samhällsvetenskapliga ämnena (SO).  Studien utgår från antagandet att språkinriktad undervisning gynnar alla elever. Forskningsfrågorna som ställdes handlade om att få syn på vilka språkliga aktiviteter som pågick under en So-lektion, hur lärare synliggjorde och bearbetade ämnesbegreppen i SO, vilken möjlighet elever gavs att vara språkligt aktiva och stöttningsgraden i undervisningen. För att behandla studiens syfte och forskningsfrågor användes en kvalitativ forskningsmetod som bestod av strukturerade och ostrukturerade observationer, där tio lärare i årskurs F-3 och 4–6 observerades. Den insamlade datan har analyserats utifrån det sociokulturella perspektivet och det specialpedagogiska relationella perspektivet. Analysen genererade i tre teman med utgångspunkt från SIOP-modellen (Sheltered Instruktion Observation Protocol) och handlade i stora drag om vilka språkliga aktiviteter som förekom i So-undervisningen, hur ämnesbegrepp behandlades och vilken typ av stöttning som förekom.  Studiens resultat visar på att det förekom en mängd olika språkliga aktiviteter i undervisningen men att kvaliteten på de språkliga aktiviteterna i undervisningen varierade. Dialogisk undervisning var vanligt förekommande liksom exempel på kamratlärande eller samarbetslärande. Studien synliggör dialogens betydelse i språkinriktad undervisning, lärarens roll i genomförandet av språkliga aktiviteter och olika typer av stöttning i undervisningen.  Studiens resultat skulle kunna tyda på att språkinriktad undervisning skapar bättre förutsättningar för lärande och utveckling i So-undervisningen.

Undervisning i flerspråkiga klasser- beskrivning och analys av ett kompetensutvecklingsprojekt Teaching in Multilingual Classrooms: Description and Analysis of a Professional Development Project

Syftet med den här undersökningen är att ta reda på vilka avtryck ett kompetensutvecklingsprojekt i svenska som andraspråk sätter hos de deltagande lärarna och deras undervisningspraktik. Kompetensutvecklingen genomfördes på en skola där majoriteten av eleverna är flerspråkiga och måluppfyllelsen är låg. I studien följs tre lärare under projektets gång, dvs. över två terminer. Undersökningen har drag av ett aktionsforskningsprojekt, då jag har varit både lärarnas handledare under kompetensutvecklingen samt genomfört undersökningen. I handledningen har en modell för undervisning av flerspråkiga barn, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol eller förkortat SIOP– modellen använts. Denna modell har utarbetats i USA av forskare och undervisande lärare, och den har använts framgångsrikt både i USA och i Europa för att få flerspråkiga elever att nå högre måluppfyllelse. För att uppnå syftet har en kvalitativ undersökning med etnografiskt inspirerade forskningsmetoder använts, där både intervjuer, observation av undervisning och loggbok använts som metoder för insamling av empiriskt material.Analysen av materialet antyder att två av lärarna förändrar sina resonemang och sin undervisningspraktik, medan den tredje läraren inte verkar förändras nämnvärt. Kompetensutvecklingen sätter spår i undervisningen hos de lärare som redan är förändringsbenägna men inte hos de andra. Lärarna påverkas i hög utsträckning av det rådande klimatet på skolan och i arbetslaget. Resultaten i undersökningen är framförallt intressanta i diskussionen av kommande kompetensutvecklingssatsningars innehåll och uppläggning.
