Being and time, §15 : around-for references and the content of mundane concernKelly, Howard Damian January 2014 (has links)
This thesis articulates a novel interpretation of Heidegger’s explication of the being (Seins) of gear (Zeugs) in §15 of his masterwork Being and Time (1927/2006) and develops and applies the position attributed to Heidegger to explain three phenomena of unreflective action discussed in recent literature and articulate a partial Heideggerian ecological metaphysics. Since §15 of BT explicates the being of gear, Part 1 expounds Heidegger’s concept of the ‘being’ (Seins) of beings (Seienden) and two issues raised in the ‘preliminary methodological remark’ in §15 of BT regarding explicating being. §1.1 interprets the being (Sein) or synonymously constitution of being (Seinsverfassung) of a being (Seienden) as a regional essence: a property unifying a region (Region), district (Bezirk), or subject-area (Sachgebiet) – a highly general (‘regional’) class of entities. Although Heidegger posits two components of the being of a being, viz. material-content (Sachhaltigkeit, Sachgehalt) and mode-of-being (Seinsart) or way-of-being (Seinsweise, Weise des Seins, Weise zu sein) (1927/1975, 321), the unclarity of this distinction means that it does not figure prominently herein. §1.2 addresses Heidegger’s distinction between ontological and ontic investigations and his notion of ‘modes of access’ (Zugangsarten, Zugangsweisen). Part 2 expounds §15 of BT’s explication of the being of gear. §2.1 analyses Heidegger’s two necessary and sufficient conditions for being gear and three core basic concepts (Grundbegriffe) enabling comprehension of these conditions and therewith a foundational comprehension of gear. Heidegger explicates the being of gear through content of unreflectively purposeful, non-intersubjective intentional states. I term such states ‘mundane concern’, which is almost synonymous with Hubert Dreyfus’s term ‘absorbed coping’ (1991, 69). Heidegger’s explication highlights around-for references (Um-zu-Verweisungen) as the peculiar species of property figuring in mundanely concernful intentional content. §2.2 clarifies Heidegger’s position on the relationship between to-hand-ness (Zuhandenheit) and extantness (Vorhandenheit) in the narrow sense: two of Heidegger’s most widely discussed concepts. I reject Kris McDaniel’s recent reading of Heidegger as affirming that nothing could be both to-hand and extant simultaneously (McDaniel 2012). Part 3 develops and applies Heidegger’s phenomenology of mundane concern. §3.1 explains the phenomena of situational holism, situated normativity, and mundanely concernful prospective control. §3.2 undertakes the metaphysical accommodation of around-for references, which §3.1 posited as featuring prominently within mundanely concernful intentional content. This thesis thus contributes not only to Heidegger scholarship, but also to contemporary debates within the philosophy of action and cognitive science.

Cette thèse porte sur la question de la communauté dans la phénoménologie husserlienne et posthusserlienne, en se concentrant autour du concept de « monde de la vie » (Lebenswelt) – notamment dans La crise des sciences européennes. A la croisée des étapes majeures du parcours husserlien dont nous dégageons les implications, nous interrogeons le monde de la vie à travers l'analyse phénoménologique des processus d'incorporation et d'incarnation. Nous démontrons que Husserl a d'emblée surmonté les impasses de ses successeurs en refusant l'opposition exclusive entre les champs d'immanence et de transcendance pour au contraire penser leurs entrelacements. A partir de la reprise de la critique radicale de l'objectivisme naturaliste, l'enjeu est d'approfondir les formes d'intrication entre sphère égologique et horizon-de-nous. Dès lors, nous désignons la praxis intersubjective comme la base des dynamiques de formation communautaire, que nous comprenons en tant que formes de vie. / This thesis engages the question of community in husserlian and post-husserlian phenomenology, concentrating on the concept of the “lifeworld” (Lebenswelt), especially in The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology. At the crossroads between two major stages of Husserl’s development, of which we will reveal the implications, we question the lifeworld through the phenomenological analysis of the processes of incorporation and incarnation. We demonstrate that Husserl straightaway surmounted the impasses met by his successors, by refusing an exclusive opposition between the fields of immanence and transcendence in order to, on the contrary, propose their interlacing. Starting with resumption of the radical critique of naturalist objectivism, the stakes are to deepen the forms of intricacy between the ecological sphere and world-horizon. From there, we designate intersubjective praxis as the basis of the dynamics of community formation, which we understand in terms of forms of life.

ist es Ziel dieser Masterarbeit, eine Antwort auf die Frage zu geben, wie eine fruchtbare
Integration von (1) gemeinschaftlichem Leben, (2) gesellschaftsrelevantem Gemeindebau und
(3) Immobilienmanagement gelingen kann. Die aktuelle ekklesiologische Praxis und
Erfahrung zeigt jedoch, dass es zu Spannungen zwischen dem Prinzip des gaben- und
konsensbasierten Miteinanders, einerseits und der Entwicklung eines gesellschaftsrelevanten
Gemeindebaus und einem die ersten beiden Bereiche unterstützenden
Immobilienmanagements andererseits kommt. Infolgedessen soll im Rahmen dieser Arbeit
die Frage nach der genauen Art und Ausprägung dieser Spannungen, ihren Ursachen und
möglichen Lösungen, die eine wirklich fruchtbare Integration dieser drei Bereiche
ermöglichen, untersucht und beantwortet werden. Dies erfolgt mit einem interdisziplinären

answer the question how a fruitful integration of (1) communal life, (2) societal relevant
congregational development and (3) property estate management is possible. Current
ecclesiological practice and experience has shown that tensions arise between the principle of
gift- and consensus-based cooperation and transformative church planting as well as the real
estate management that is supposed to support the other two areas. Therefore this dissertation
aims to examine and answer questions about the exact nature and extent of these tensions,
their causes and possible solutions that make a truly fruitful integration of these three areas
possible. This takes place within an interdisciplinary approach by (a) analyzing the nature,
extent and reason of the tensions sociologically, (b) examining them from a theological
viewpoint and (c) offering practical theological courses of action as an ecclesiological aid for

S'inscrivant dans la perspective d'une recherche d'anthropo-géographie, fidèle à bien des égards, tant philosophiquement que dans sa mise en œuvre expérimentale, à la conception de la géographie d'Eric Dardel, ce travail rend compte de la nécessité d'appréhender la Géographie comme la science de l'habiter en analysant pour ce faire, à partir de l'exploitation d'un matériau empirique complexe et représentatif, les conditions fondamentales de l'habitabilité de l'espace. S'appuyant en particulier sur les travaux récemment publiés de Georges Hubert de Radkowski portant sur l'anthropologie de l'habitat et sur les énoncés husserliens et habermassiens relatifs au Monde Vécu, ce travail, géographique de fonds en comble, propose et met à l'épreuve une définition de l'habiter visant à détacher cette notion des représentations que nos sociétés sédentaires et occidentales lui ont assigné, en associant de manière restrictive l'habitat à l'espace du logement stricto-sensu. Abordant l'habitabilité de l'espace, qu'il s'agisse de l'espace mondial, de l'Etat (la France, la Jordanie), du pays (le désert du Wadi Rum, la Touraine...) de la ville (Tours, Amman), de leurs " quartiers ", de certaines de leurs habitations (Grands Ensembles, internat, hôtel), des espaces domestiques à proprement parler (la tente, l'appartement, la maison) et de l'espace du Moi en général, mais surtout dans leurs nécessaires interactions mutuelles, cette recherche restitue les phénomènes matériels, immatériels et idéels de l'habiter dépendamment de ce qui les fonde : la dialogie société /espace, et toujours dépendamment de celle ci, le rapport individu /espace dans lesquels, par lesquels et pour lesquels ces actes d'habiter se manifestent dans la totalité de la durée de l'existence comme dans la synchronie de celle-ci. Se focalisant aussi bien sur le décryptage des logiques sociétales historiques et contemporaines que sur l'étude de certains actes parfois anodins mais néanmoins rituels pourvoyant à la constitution des espaces d'habitat des sociétés humaines dans leur ensemble et dans leurs relations comme des groupes ou des individus qui en sont les membres " cohabitants ", la démarche animant ce travail est tout autant heuristique que politique. Elle participe de l'institution d'une Géographie ni individualiste ni spatialiste s'inscrivant dans le procès de civilisation si ce n'est post-moderne, en tout cas post-productiviste, censée renouveler les enjeux de développement des sociétés humaines présentes sur Terre et partant le bien être essentiel de ceux qui, ensemble, l'habitent.
