Student Influence during English Lessons : A Comparison of the Socialisation in India and Sweden

Kihlstenius, Therese, Thorsteinsen, Linnéa January 2010 (has links)

This project is a comparative study of three elementary schools in India and two elementary schools in Sweden. The purpose of this project is to study if Indian and Swedish students have the possibility to have influence on their English lessons. The research involves values conveyed in the socialisation and their consequences for student influence, democracy and society in the two countries.

National and international research and literature concerning socialisation, language didactics, democracy and student influence were used as a foundation of this study. Furthermore, the study investigates the Swedish and the Indian curricula, and makes use of observations of English lessons, questionnaires and interviews with teachers in both countries. The method for this research is qualitative with some features of quantitative research and based in the method of Grounded theory.

The results of this project is that the teachers in both countries controlled the students in different ways during the lessons and practiced student influence only when letting the students choose between preselected materials. Exclusion, inclusion and the hidden curriculum were aspects that appeared, which are likely to teach the students about their individual values in society. The lack of student influence consequently leads to the students being discouraged to be partaking citizens. Instead, the students will learn to follow the rules of society, be loyal to authorities and to carry established values with them and thus reproduce the society in each country and make it remain the same.

Development and Evaluation of Lessons Learned Knowledge Management System In IC Packaging and Testing Industry

Chen, Rainbow 02 August 2001 (has links)
½×¤åºKn (^) In the IC packaging and testing industry, short lead-time, high yield performance and excellence in quality are the major factors for competition. To achieve these goals, experienced and knowledgeable employees as well as a culture appreciating collaborative problem solving and knowledge sharing are essential. The case company realized and promoted the importance of collaborative problem solving and knowledge sharing. Currently, several collaborative problem solving and knowledge sharing activities can be observed in the case company. Although the case company appreciates and creates the culture of collaborative problem solving and knowledge sharing, several challenges remain to be addressed. ¡P Reuse of lessons learned knowledge (or tacit knowledge for short) seldom takes place. ¡P Retention of Lessons Learned knowledge is lacking. ¡P The availability of lessons learned knowledge is a concern. To address the above-mentioned challenges faced by the case company, the purpose of this research is to develop and implement a knowledge management system. Specifically, an lessons learned knowledge repository will be constructed for capturing, retaining and reusing lessons learned knowledge. The goals of the target knowledge management system include facilitating efficient inter- and intra-departmental knowledge sharing and improving the knowledge availability that, in turn, leading to a productivity improvement. Empirical evaluations on the usability of the proposed system will be conducted and analyzed.

The effect of direct instruction math curriculum on higher-order problem solving

Christofori, Pamela 01 June 2005 (has links)
Previous research has examined the effectiveness of Direct Instruction Curriculum over the past thirty years in a variety of areas including rate of learning, effectiveness on different types of learners, and comparisons to other types of instruction. This study attempted to determine the effects of the use of a direct instruction math curriculum on higher-order problem solving. Two groups of 3 5 students each participated. The procedures included administering the Kauffman Achievement test to determine current grade level in math and reading. The Saxon Math Second Grade Curriculum was used to instruct the participants. The effects on higher-order problem solving with the Corrective Math Curriculum were assessed on two different dependent measures: solution of word problems consisting of both addition and subtraction operations, and performance of the students within the curriculum. Results were assessed using the delayed multiple baseline design.

Music lessons for at-risk youth: volunteer teacher perspectives

2014 June 1900 (has links)
Abstract A basic interpretive qualitative research design (Merriam, 2002) was used to explore the perceptions and observations of volunteer piano teachers providing weekly piano lessons to at-risk youth. Four volunteer piano teachers from two prairie cities who volunteered teaching three twenty-minute piano lessons a week for at least one year in a local school-based program, Heart of the City Piano Program, were interviewed. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings included three themes about the perceived benefits of piano lessons for the students –student self-motivation, student confidence, student sense of accomplishment – as well as three themes about distinguishing characteristics of the piano lessons – student focussed lessons, allowing students to be themselves, and positive role model relationships. Findings are discussed in relation to current research on at-risk youth and music education, and recommendations for further research and implications for practice are included.

ETNOKULTŪRA UGDANT MOKINIŲ DORINES VERTYBES DAILĖS PAMOKOSE PRADINĖSE KLASĖSE / Etnoculture in Developing a Student’s Virtuous Values in Art Lessons in Primary Classes

Ralytė, Aistė 27 August 2009 (has links)
The development of etnoculture is currently one of the most relevant themes while discussing about contemporary educational reform, analysing its benefits and drawbacks. The respect for mother-tongue, nation’s culture and traditions are indicated in core curriculum (2003). It is sought that students would realize themselves as responsible members of the nation and develop tolerance towards other nations. However, in schools these objectives often become only programme regulations. Students hardly realize the peculiarity of their nation’s history, culture and the necessity of nurturance of Lithuanian cultural and civil identity. School is a source of knowledge and skills, which help student to develop. One of the objectives of educational institutions should be to extend ethnic traditions, virtuous values, spirituality.

Are Parents Treading Water When it Comes to Awareness of Children’s Drowning Risk? The Impact of Children’s Swimming Lessons on Parents’ Perceptions of Children’s Drowning Risk, Swimming Ability, and Supervision Needs Around Outdoor Water

Sandomierski, Megan 28 October 2011 (has links)
Having the same parents repeatedly complete questionnaires over time, the current community based study investigated beliefs relevant to supervision, drowning risk, and water safety for children aged two through five enrolled in swim lessons. Results revealed that many parents value swimming lessons for young children and view supervision as an important prevention approach. Water safety beliefs and accuracy in judging children’s swim abilities improved over lessons, but time in lessons was related to endorsing poorer supervision of children near water. Having experienced a “close call” for drowning was found to make parents more aware of drowning risk and the importance of close supervision. Results highlight the need for parent education that targets beliefs about water safety and supervision during lessons, and also suggest that a close call for drowning may act as a “teachable moment” for parents and be an appropriate time to implement such interventions.

Managing outsource agreements between client organisations and suppliers / Booyse J.J.

Booyse, Johannes Jacobus January 2011 (has links)
The outsourcing of non–core Information and Communication Technology services in the ICT industry has been successfully conducted for many years based on various models and frameworks. Client organisations embark on this for many reasons including cost savings, access to specialised skills and access to global resources to name but a few. This study identified and evaluated the management of outsource agreements between client organisations and suppliers with specific focus on creating an understanding of those factors that has a direct impact on the success of outsource agreements. The primary objective of the research study was to provide a comprehensive management guideline for client organisations embarking on outsource initiatives or planning to renew existing agreements. The secondary objective was to assist service providers with guidance on pitfalls and issues experienced in the management of such agreements and to highlight the lessons learned from the industry at large. The research was conducted by means of a literature study and empirical study. The literature study included background information on outsourcing, outsourcing theories as well as outsource management frameworks. Furthermore, it addressed lessons learned and issues and pitfalls to avoid by service providers. The literature review formed the basis for creating an understanding of those factors that has a direct impact on the success of outsource agreements. Based on the evaluation of the empirical study, it was concluded that client organisations that are planning to embark on the outsourcing or renewal of services need to follow a management framework with a full lifecycle in order to ensure success. The top issues that suppliers need to address are to ensure that a climate of trust exists between them and the client; they need to be as transparent as possible and ensure that they carry extensive business knowledge of the client being serviced. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.
