"Den siste fienden som förintas är döden" : En studie av ondskans gestaltning i fantasylitteratur med särskild inriktning på böcker ur serien Narnia och Harry Potter.

Komarova Lindgren, Elizaveta January 2021 (has links)
The inquiry of this essay is to examine the expression of evil in fantasy literature with a special focus on J.K. Rowlings’ Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s stone and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but also C.S. Lewis’ Narnia the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Narnia the Last Battle. The purpose is to illuminate different depictions of evil in the books and reflect what these depictions can tell us about evil in our contemporary context. With this essay I want to show how world views are present in fantasy literature with a special focus on the portrayal of evil and its significance for the understanding of the narrative. I mean that the understanding and depiction of evil is a universal problem and an existential issue of relevance to world views.

[en] ALICE: AN IRREVERSIBLE CREATIVE DYNAMIC / [pt] ALICE: UMA DINÂMICA CRIATIVA IRREVERSÍVEL

LARISSA GUIMARAES AVERBUG 08 July 2021 (has links)
[en] Focusing on the creative process and transmedia, this research proposes investigating the irreversible creative dynamic driven by Lewis Carroll through his two acclaimed works: the Alices. From the Victorian era to contemporary art, Wonderland and Looking-Glass continue to be reinvented through the hands of artists who, inspired by the author s universe, mix reality and fiction by integrating biography into the artwork. The cultural phenomenon becomes transmedia, not in a strategic and centralized way, but organically and chaotically, through countless visual producers dispersed in time and space. Many of these producers are designers working in related areas and different media – such as illustration, photography, art, cinema and games –, who seem to develop a creative design attitude that allows them to collaborate with the expansion of the cultural phenomenon. The proposal includes identifying convergences and divergences not only between visual languages and media but also between the ideas and thoughts of the visual producers, during their artistic and poetic work in process. By mapping examples of the multiple visuality of Alice, the intention is to outline this dynamic s characteristics, which, through repetition and deviations, allows the narrative to be continuously reframed. It is believed that, as works that are open to the initiative of the reader and the artist, the nonsense story contributes as a catalyst element for new creative processes: in the Alice dynamic, there are new relationships of authorship and co-authorship, of production, reception and mediation. By echoing mainly different interdisciplinary voices, this research aims to present a theoretical, critical and philosophical approach to postmodernity issues present in Alice.

Federmann, Patrick 28 February 2023 (has links)
Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) consist of a Lewis acid and base, which are prevented from neutralising each other and in turn could be successfully used to activate small molecules. Boranes have been predominantly explored as electron pair acceptors. In contrast, aluminium-based systems, in particular intramolecular ones, are underrepresented despite their pronounced Lewis acidity. The aim of the present dissertation was to fathom which synthetic route is suitable for the preparation of intramolecular phosphorus/aluminium FLPs with large spatial separation of the Lewis functions and to investigate their reactivity. On a xanthene backbone bearing a diphenylphosphine moiety, dimesityl and bis(pentafluorophenyl)alane units could be introduced by lithiation and metathesis, and the resulting P/Al-FLPs are able to open tetrahydrofuran. The perfluorinated derivative exhibited a tenfold higher rate constant of the ring opening reaction. Using quantum chemical calculations, this could be attributed to the increased Lewis acidity of the aluminium centre. Using a tin-aluminum exchange on a trimethylstannylated xanthene precursor with methylaluminium compounds, P/Al-FLPs could be constructed, which are stabilised by another equivalent of the aluminium precursor. The compounds are capable of activating carbon dioxide, and the CO2 adducts of the various derivatives become increasingly stabilised as the number of electronegative substituents at the aluminium centres increases. The novel synthetic route could also be applied for the synthesis of a P/Al-FLP on the biphenylene linker. In this case, the aluminium centre is sufficiently saturated by an interaction with the phosphane donor to permit the isolation of the strained compounds in monomeric form. Nevertheless, the alane exhibits high Lewis acidity and the FLP reacts with CO2 and propadiene.

Germain, Gabrielle 20 April 2018 (has links)
Adaptations cinématographiques d’Alice au pays des merveilles et De l’autre côté du miroir de Lewis Carroll: Analyse des transécritures de Walt Disney, Jan Švankmajer et Tim Burton observes how three different cinematographical versions, of the same source text, are singular from one another. The goal of this essay is to analyze the adaptations of Walt Disney (1951), Jan Švankmajer (1989) and Tim Burton (2010) from the narrative choices to what directors added in order to personalize the adaptation. To do so, we rely on Deleuze’s notion of ideas. Every analyze is being divided by: the meeting of the novel’s ideas and the film’s ideas, by ideas that have been added or modified, and by ideas that were eliminated by the adaptor-filmmaker.

Die Afrikaanse bestemming van C S Lewis se The voyage of the Dawn Treader

Van der Watt, Marike 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis is internationally considered as one of the classics of children’s literature. The series consists of seven books, of which only the first four were translated into Afrikaans, namely Die Towenaar se Neef (The Magician’s Nephew), Die Leeu, die Heks en die Hangkas (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), Die Perd en sy Seun (The Horse and his Boy) and Prins Kaspian (Prince Caspian). According to the publisher, Human & Rousseau, they have no intention to translate the remainder of the series. The three books that have not been translated into Afrikaans are The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair and The Last Battle. The main aim of this study is the practical translation of a selection of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. The Functionalist approach of Vermeer and Nord, Toury and Chesterman’s translation norms from Descriptive Translation Studies, Venuti’s foreignisation and domestication and Klingberg’s cultural contex adaptation form the theoretical framework for both the discussion and analysis of the source text as well as the translation. The four types of translation problems as identified by Nord are used as the framework for the annotations of the translation. By doing a theoretically based translation, the connection between theory and practice is illustrated: the translator chooses a general approach and translation strategies and is consequently guided to make consistent translation choices on macro as well as micro levels. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: C.S. Die drie onvertaalde boeke in die reeks is The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair en The Last Battle.

An empirical study into the impact of HIV & AIDS on the Lewis group's market

Wentzel, Willem Jacobus Erasmus 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Why should the Lewis Group be concerned about HIV/AlDS? The answer is quite simple. HIV/AIDS poses a clear and present danger to the twin rationales on which businesses like the Lewis Group are based. The rationales are low-cost labour for own and supply chain purposes, and fast-growing markets. This research focuses more towards the latter and presents a review of the current literature and attempts to estimate the impact of HIV/AIDS on the group's market. Literature on the subject is surprisingly limited (Bloom & Mahal, 200 I: 10) and often dated seen in the light of the fact that it is one of the most oppressing issues in the Southern African business arena today. Amidst a rather slow awakening in the private sector to the effects of HIV/AlDS on markets a lot of resources and time are being spent on research in this area. Although the scope of this research does not encompass the full impact of the epidemic on the company, it provides insight into an area on which very little is known yet. Companies have a high level of control over, and information, about their employees but significantly less about their customers} hence the reason for the use of hypothesising and adopting a tailor-made methodology to quantify prevalence rates and vulnerability. This paper is therefore not a complete assessment of impact of the disease on the group as a whole. AlDS is a bottom line issue for most companies as it impacts on production costs and consumer markets (Ellis & Terwin, 2003: 55). A number of "doom-and-gloom" merchants have come forward with doomsday estimates about the impact of the epidemic on business. As a result, the extent of the problem might have been overstated by some. This sparked a lot of the debates that resulted in many different opinions which have caused a lot of uncertainty. This research will attempt to clarify these issues and fonnulate an unbiased opinion as of the impact of the company. The HIV/AIDS problem is sti ll gathering momentum and prevalence rates are still on the rise. There is currently no cure for HIV / AIDS and chances look diminutive that there will be one within the next decade. If prevention programmes had been successful, this report would never have been written. The problem is aggravated by the fact that the core modes of HN transmission are deeply rooted in social behavioural patterns, value systems and traditional and cultural beliefs. This makes it hard to imagine that the spread of the epidemic will decrease and eventually stop soon (Goldstein, Pretorius, Stuart, 2003). As we are entering a phase where the number of AIDS-related deaths is starting to rise rapidly, it is important to gain sufficient insight into the effect of the disease, especially now that infonnation is becoming more available in the public domain (McClintock & Truen, 2003: 3). AIDS primarily kills young and middle-aged adults during their most productive years. This section of the population is the major source of demand for goods and services. The macro-economic impact of this is expected to influence demand for goods, especially durables, and services. This is aggravated by slower population growth rates that will further slow down the demand for certain goods and services (McClintock & Truen, 2003: 3). HIV/AIDS must be managed proactively. In order to assess and manage this risk, management must have a clear understanding of nature and extent of the risk (Ellis & Terwin, 2003: 1). The Bureau for Economic Research did a survey in 2003 on the impact of HIV/AIDS on business in South Africa. It found that only 8 percent of retail companies surveyed have assessed the impact of the disease on their consumer base (Ellis & Terwin, 2003: 30). A possible reason might be because companies want to see proven input and exit strategies for HIV/AIDS contributions. These are not yet possible for HN/AIDS (Barrett & Ruggie, 2004: 5). The HlV/AIDS prevalence rates estimate for the Lewis Group revealed significantly lower prevalence rates than the national averages. Nevertheless, HlV and AIDS prevalence rates for 2004 are estimated 16.5 percent and 2.5 percent respectively. HIV-prevalence is expected to increase to 17.1 percent and AIDS to 4.7 percent by 2009. There are a number of interventions and strategic responses the company can consider to mitigate the risks entrenched in these estimates. Recommended strategic responses include diversification of profit generators into the higher income group market, focus on areas of growth and building the Lewis Group's brands. It is generally believed that good and responsible corporate citizenship will benefit from involvement in community and charitable projects. The belief is that customers can become predisposed towards the company and that the group can gain goodwill from new and existing customers. It is therefore clear that there are remedies the company can consider to manage and mitigate its risks. It is, however, possible for the company to emerge stronger, more efficient and more competitive if the right responses are implemented.

Molecular Motion in Frustrated Lewis Pair Chemistry: insights from modelling

Pu, Maoping January 2015 (has links)
Mechanisms of reactions of the frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) with carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen (H2) are studied by using quantum chemical modelling. FLPs are relatively novel chemical systems in which steric effects prevent a Lewis base (LB) from donating its electron pair to a Lewis acid (LA). From the main group of the periodic table, a variety of the electron pair donors and acceptors can create an FLP and the scope of the FLP chemistry is rapidly expanding at present. Representative intermolecular FLPs are phosphines and boranes with bulky electron-donating groups on phosphorus and bulky electron-withdrawing groups on boron – e.g., the tBu3P/B(C6F5)3 pair. The intramolecular FLPs feature linked LB and LA centers in one molecule. Investigations of the FLP reaction mechanisms were carried out using the transition state (TS) and the potential energy surface (PES) calculations plus the Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) as an efficient and robust implementation of general ab initio molecular dynamics scheme. In BOMD simulations, quantum and classical mechanics are combined. The electronic structure calculations are fully quantum via the density functional theory (DFT). Molecular motion at finite (non-zero) temperature is explicitly accounted for at non-quantized level via Newton’s equations. Due to recent advancements of computers and algorithms, one can treat fairly large macromolecular systems with BOMD and even include significant portion of the first solvation shell surrounding a large reacting complex in the molecular model. Main results are as follows. It is shown that dynamics is significant for understanding of FLP chemistry. The multiscale nature of motion – i.e., light molecules such as CO2 or H2 versus a pair of heavy LB and LA molecules – affects the evolution of interactions in the reacting complex. Motion which is perpendicular to the reaction coordinate was found to play a role in the transit of the activated complex through the TS-region. Regarding the heterolytic cleavage of H2 by tBu3P/B(C6F5)3 FLP simulated in gas phase and with explicit solvent, it was found that (i) the reaction path includes shallow quasi-minima “imbedded” in the TS-region, and (ii) tBu3P/B(C6F5)3 are almost stationary while proton- and hydride-like fragments of H2 move toward phosphorous and boron respectively. For binding of CO2 by tBu3P/B(C6F5)3 FLP, it was found that (i) the reacting complex can “wander” along the “potential energy wall” that temporarily blocks the path to the product, and (ii) the mechanism can combine the concerted and two-step reaction paths in solution. The discovered two-step binding of CO2 by tBu3P/B(C6F5)3 FLP involves solvent-stabilized phosphorus-carbon interactions (dative bonding). These and other presented results are corroborated and explained using TS and PES calculations. With computations of observable characteristics of reactions, it is pointed out how it could be possible to attain experimental proof of the results. /
At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 6: Accepted.

Impact of Climate Change on Hydroclimatic Variables

Wi, Sungwook January 2012 (has links)
The conventional approach to the frequency analysis of extreme rainfall is complicated by non-stationarity resulting from climate change. In this study significant trends in extreme rainfall are detected using statistical trend tests (Mann-Kendall test and t-test) for all over the Korean Peninsula. The violation of the stationarity for 1 hour annual maximum series is detected for large part of the area especially for southwestern and northeastern regions. For stations showing non-stationarity, the non-stationary generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution model with a location parameter in the form of linear function of time makes significant improvement in modeling rainfall extremes when compared to the stationary GEV model. The Bartlett-Lewis rainfall model is used to generate annual maximum series for the purpose of generating the Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curve. Using 100 sets of 50 year synthetic annual maxima, it is found that the observed annual rainfall maximum series are reasonably represented by the model. The observed data is perturbed by change factors to incorporate the climate change scenario from the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) regional climate model into IDF estimates. The IDF curves for the future period 2040-2079 show highest estimates for all return periods and rainfall durations. The future IDF estimates show significant difference from the IDF estimates of the historical period (1968-2000). Overall, IDF curves show an increasing tendency over time. A historical and future climate simulation is evaluated over the Colorado River Basin using a 111-year simulation (1969-2079) of the WRF climate change scenario. We find the future projections show statistically significant increases in temperature with larger increases in the northern part of the basin. There are statistically insignificant increases in precipitation, while snowfall shows a statistically significant decrease throughout the period in all but the highest elevations and latitudes. The strongest decrease in snowfall is seen at high elevations in the southern part of the basin and low elevations in the northern part of the basin.

That Poor Little Thing: The Emotive Meanings of Diminutives in Polish and Russian Translations of Alice in Wonderland

Lockyer, Dorothy 29 April 2013 (has links)
The emotive connotations of diminutives in English are a source of controversy among scholars, while the Slavic languages of Polish and Russian are considered ‘diminutive-rich’ with diminutives that convey diverse nuances. Thus, the translation of diminutives between English and Slavic languages has either been portrayed as difficult or has been ignored altogether. However, an analysis of Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and several of its translations into Polish and Russian shows that English has many diminutives, some of which are ‘untranslatable’, while many diminutives can be easily translated. Yet, the strong emphasis on diminutives in Polish and Russian produces diminutives in the translations that do not appear in the original text and are not typical of English. What becomes evident is that the obstacles in translating various diminutive constructions provoke the question: What are the semantic-pragmatic differences between English and Polish/Russian diminutives and how do these differences affect translation? / Graduate / 0679 / 0593 / 0314 / dlockyer@alumni.ubc.ca
