Υλοποίηση αριθμητικών μονάδων υπολοίπου 2^n+1 με αριθμητική των n δυαδικών ψηφίων

Το Σύστημα Αριθμητικής Υπολοίπου (Residue Number System - RNS), είναι ένα σύστημα αριθμητικής το οποίο παρουσιάζει σημαντικά πλεονεκτήματα στην ταχύτητα με την οποία μπορούν να γίνουν οι αριθμητικές πράξεις. Στα RNS οι αριθμοί αναπαρίστανται σαν ένα σύνολο από υπόλοιπα. Οι εφαρμογές του RNS εκτείνονται σε ένα ευρύ φάσμα της επιστήμης και της τεχνολογίας οπότε έχει δοθεί μεγάλο βάρος στην ανάπτυξη αριθμητικών συστημάτων υψηλής απόδοσης. Τέτοιες αριθμητικές μονάδες είναι αθροιστές, πολλαπλασιαστές, κυκλώματα υπολογισμού ρίζας και γεννήτριες υπολοίπου (Residue Generator – RG). Τα RNS συστήματα πολύ συχνά χρησιμοποιούν βάσεις με τρία διαφορετικά moduli της μορφής {2^n-1,2^n,2^n+1}. Αυτό οφείλεται στο γεγονός ότι έχουν κατασκευαστεί πολύ αποδοτικά συνδυαστικά κυκλώματα κωδικοποίησης και αποκωδικοποίησης από και προς το δυαδικό σύστημα. Επομένως, ο σχεδιασμός πολύ αποδοτικών αριθμητικών συστημάτων modulo 2^n-1, modulo 2^n, modulo 2^n+1 είναι ζωτικής σημασίας για τις εφαρμογές που χρησιμοποιούν το RNS. Από αυτές τις βάσεις αυτή που απαιτεί τα πιο απαιτητικά κυκλώματα είναι αυτή που έχει σαν moduli το 2^n+1 μια που μόνο αυτή δίνει αριθμούς με n+1 bits. Στη modulo 2^n+1 αριθμητική οι αριθμοί εμφανίζονται συνήθως σε δύο αναπαραστάσεις. Στην αναπαράσταση με βάρη και στη diminished-1 αναπαράσταση. Οι δύο αυτές αναπαραστάσεις έχουν κάποια χαρακτηριστικά που τις διαφοροποιούν και που τις κάνουν κατάλληλες για διαφορετικές εφαρμογές. Στην διπλωματική αυτή θα παρουσιάσουμε μια τεχνική η οποία συνδυάζει τα πλεονεκτήματα των δύο αναπαραστάσεων προσφέροντας έτσι κυκλώματα με μικρότερη επιφάνεια που συνήθως όμως έχουν καλύτερη απόδοση. Αυτή η τεχνική θα εφαρμοστεί σε modulo 2^n+1 αθροιστές πολλαπλών εντέλων (Multi-Operand Modulo Adder – MOMA), σε modulo 2^n+1 αθροιστές και σε RG ενώ θα γίνει μελέτη της απόδοσης τους σε σχέση με τις πιο διαδεδομένες μέχρι τώρα αντίστοιχες αρχιτεκτονικές. / The Residue Number Systen (RNS) is an arithmetic system with many advantages in the speed of arithmetic components. In RNS the numbers are represented as a set of residues. The RNS applications are various so there is a great effort in developing arithmetic components with very high performance. Those arithmetic components are adders, multipliers, residue generators etc. In RNS there are commonly used bases of the form {2^n-1, 2^n, 2^n+1} that is because there has been developed very efficient encoding and decoding from and to the binary system. So the design of very efficient arithmetic components in modulo 2^n-1, modulo 2^n, modulo 2^n+1 is very crucial for RNS applications. From these three modulis the 2^n+1 is the most critical to implement because it is the only one that needs n+1-bits. In modulo 2^n+1 arithmetic the numbers are represented in two forms. In the weighted representation and in the diminished-1 representation. These two representations have some differences that make them suitable for different applications. On this thesis work we introduce a technique that combines the advantages of the two representations. This technique when applied in arithmetic components produces circuits that are smaller and very often faster. We use this techniques to design multi operand modulo 2^n+1 adders (MOMA), fast modulo 2^n+1 adders and residue generators (RG).

A fim de alcan?armos nossos objetivos, ancoramo-nos nos postulados te?ricos da An?lise Cr?tica do Discurso - ACD (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001, 2006), especificamente em sua Abordagem Sociol?gica e Comunicacional do Discurso - ASCD (PEDROSA, 2014, 2015), que abrange a Sociologia para a Mudan?a Social (BAJOIT, 2006, 2008, 2013) e a Lingu?stica Sist?mico-Funcional, esta ?ltima, contemplando o Sistema de Transitividade (HALLIDAY, 1985, 1994; HALLIDAY e MATHIESSEN, 2004 e CUNHA e SOUZA, 2011). Uma vez que as identidades individuais s?o constru?das por meio de posicionamentos ideol?gicos que alicer?am vozes contra-hegem?nicas e contribuem para a supera??o de assimetrias sociais, infere-se que os sujeitos, ao construir suas identidades, podem promover mudan?a social e cultural, posto que deslegitimam os estigmas sociais negativos associados ?s pessoas em situa??o de rua em Natal/RN. / The scientific debate concerning the population phenomenon on the streets has permeated the research agendas of some areas of human knowledge, especially the study of arenas of human and social sciences. Some national researches show that the phenomenon is complex, mixed by social, psychological, objective and subjective processes ( ROSA , 2005) and comprises a synthesis of multiple determinations inherent in capitalist society (SILVA, 2009). Therefore, this thesis aims to present a critical- discursive analysis of individual identity construction work of people who have lived or are living on the streets in the city of Natal / RN, based on their own life stories, set by narratives of "I " . To build the analysis, we focus on three specific objectives: a) to discuss the representative socialization networks of individual identity construction work; b ) to characterize the perceptions of each individual concerning the population phenomenon on the streets, and c ) To examine the identification and characterization that each individual makes of his relations with the population phenomenon on the streets. In order to achieve our goals, we followed the theoretical postulates of Critical Discourse Analysis - ACD (Fairclough, 2001, 2006), specifically in its Sociological and Communicational Approach to Speech - ASCD (PEDROSA, 2014, 2015), which covers the sociology for Social Change (BAJOIT , 2006, 2008 , 2013) and Systemic Functional Linguistics, the latter, considering the Transitive system (HALLIDAY , 1985 , 1994; Halliday and Mathiessen , 2004 and CUNHA and SOUZA, 2011). Methodologically, it is a qualitative research (descriptive and interpretative), anchored on Applied Linguistics (CELANI, 1992; SIGNORINI and Cavalcanti, 1998; SIGNORINI 1998; MOITA LOPES, 1990 , 1996, 1998 , 2006 and 2013 ). The corpus is based on five life stories which were recorded during the Language and Identity Workshop : " Letters on the streets " , applied during the II Population Potiguar Seminar on the homeless and through the access to the Hidden Natal virtual community. In light of a context of social apartheid, set up by experienced hardships and jettisoning of human rights, the results point out that the individual identity construction of people who have lived or are on the streets in Natal / RN comprises a work of the individual as the subject himself in light of the construction of identity resistance, and design policy. These identities reveal an ontological will directed to the emancipation of the subjects on the streets, a politically conscious subject of rights and duties that works towards one's citizen empowerment, demanding effective promotion of public policies aimed at their social reintegration. Once the individual identities are constructed by ideological positions that underpin voices counterhegemonic and contribute to overcoming social inequalities, it appears that the subject, to build their identities, can promote social and cultural change, once delegitimizes the negative social stigmas associated with the homeless in Natal/RN.

When we compare the ideas of these authors we discover that beyond the direct influences from the philosopher that the sociologist recognizes there are great parallelisms of thought. That is, Wittgenstein s pragmatic thought of the use of language does not concern only language, but also every socially built behavior. When we notice that the social and linguistic behavior are borne by the individual in a tacit way, that leads us to theorize about the prereflective dimension that builds human actions and even the habits of thought. The same processes allow the uses of language to build wider social practices. Besides, John Austin, one of Wittgenstein s disciples, and his speech acts theory, contribute with a way to reflecting on how language ressembles a concrete action. From the Functional Linguistic theory perspective, the North American declivity, this project intends to outline the possible grammaticalization trajectory taken by the A? specificity marker. It will be followed from its function as a spatial deitic up to its integration of indefinite NP, and the action of the fundamental principles of the theory, such as iconicity and informativity, will be observed on the use of this item. Following this, A? specificity marker behavior will be described in respect to various linguistic and social factors: type of text where the occurrence is encountered, language modality in which the latter is produced, syntactic function developed by the NP specified by A? , the existence or lack of material intervening between A? and the NP nuclear noun, informational status of the NP adjugated to A? , and finally, sex, education and age of the speaker. The occurrence of conversational implicatures will also be verified (GRICE, 1982) within the contexts of A? specificity marker use. Reflections on the teaching of grammar will be made, as well as on the possibility and validity of working with noun phrase specificity markers in elementary and high school Portuguese language classes. The data used in this research project stem from Corpus Discurso & Gram?tica A l?ngua falada e escrita na cidade do Natal (FURTADO DA CUNHA, 1998), and from Corpus Discurso & Gram?tica A l?ngua falada e escrita na cidade do Rio de Janeiro (VOTRE; OLIVEIRA, 1995) / Este trabalho tem como objetivo geral descrever e analisar o comportamento de A? marcador de especificidade de Sintagmas Nominais indefinidos, uma das muitas fun??es que este item ling??stico desempenha no portugu?s brasileiro contempor?neo. Sob a perspectiva te?rica da Ling??stica Funcional, em sua vertente norte-americana, procuramos esbo?ar uma poss?vel trajet?ria de gramaticaliza??o por que A? marcador de especificidade passou, a partir de sua fun??o fonte de d?itico espacial at? vir a integrar o SN indefinido, e observar a atua??o de princ?pios fundamentais da teoria, como iconicidade e informatividade, sobre o uso desse item. The purpose of this research is to understand the meanings disclosed by the voices that make up the scientific discourse on this field, pointing toward its course of development, the ethical position that is peculiar to it and how this position is represented in its scientific practice. The scientific discourse typical of the production of knowledge of Applied Linguistics is now construed as leading to practices that define the production of this field of learning whose object is to study man and man s relationship to language. Theoretical groundwork is anchored on the work the Social Sciences have developed on the paradigmatic crises of science and the social changes resulting from modern and post-modern times, on Applied Linguistics researches on the identity of the field of study, its courses and ethics, and on the bakhtinian theory that supports a view of language as a social practice built under the aegis of the subject s ethics and responsibility. The corpus of this work comprises qualitative and quantitative data made into articles presented at the CBLA. The research methodology conforms to the interpretive paradigm and has the concept of social voices as its category of analysis. Results point towards the progress of Applied Linguistics that, from its role as a mediator discipline between linguistic theory and practical applications, is assuming a position in a field of study of its own, independent, with transdisciplinary characteristics, pursuing through its quests and redefinitions to get closer to the dimension of life and assuming the ethical position of taking on responsibility for its doings and sayings / Esta pesquisa trata da Ling??stica Aplicada e de sua constitui??o como campo cient?fico, em acordo com o conhecimento produzido no ?mbito dos Congressos Brasileiros de Ling??stica Aplicada (CBLA). Seu objetivo ? compreender os significados revelados pelas vozes que constituem o discurso cient?fico sobre esse campo, descrevendo seu percurso evolutivo, analisando a postura ?tica que o caracteriza e o modo como esta se faz representar em sua pr?tica cient?fica. O discurso cient?fico que caracteriza a produ??o do conhecimento da Ling??stica Aplicada ? entendido como um discurso orientador de pr?ticas que definem a produ??o desse campo de saber, o qual assenta no homem, e nas suas rela??es com a linguagem, seu objeto de estudo. Due to the fact that its teaching has been facing a growing crisis in the last four decades, which currently persists, we ponder about external and internal causes of its decline, aiming at pointing out an alternative that enable us to find a way out of this situation. So, our research questions mainly concern how the teaching of Latin is viewed amongst the academic society, also investigating if it has kept up with the development of the scientific reflection about human language and the new approaches on language teaching. Furthermore, we analyse the contribution that the study of Latin can provide to the academic formation of language teachers and try to identify the areas of knowledge that can contribute to a reshaping of its teaching. Based on these guidelines, we have established as the goals of this research: 1) to reflect about the current situation of the teaching of Latin and the causes of its decline; 2) to determine its social representation among teachers and students of the Language Courses, as a way of defining the role it fulfills in the academic formation of teachers; 3) to accomplish an exploratory study of some handbooks that show alternative proposals on how to teach Latin, in order to detect their adequacy to current times and to the goals of the academic study of languages; 4) to offer an alternative proposal on how to teach Latin that takes into account the principles of Applied Linguistics, considering the socio-historical and cultural aspects of the language, enabling it to meet the requirements set by modern times. This research is divided into two parts. The first part presents the theoretical framework. We map the studies about Latin teaching inside and outside Brazil and argue against the concept of Latin being a dead language, presenting arguments set on changing this view. Then we describe and comment the notions of literacy, genre and culture, which helped us understand the reasons for the decline of the teaching of Latin and to point out suitable ways to overcome the crisis. The second part is dedicated to reflecting on the literacy practices in Latin teaching. We began by examining the answers to the questionnaires given to students and teachers about the view of Latin in the Language Courses; then we reflect on the teaching-learning of Latin as an academic literacy practice followed by an analysis of the didactic material used in teaching Latin. Finally, we suggest an approach of the familiar letter genre in ancient Rome as a means of teaching Latin in a contextualized way / O foco deste trabalho ? o ensino da l?ngua latina. Assim, nossas quest?es de pesquisa se preocupam, antes de mais nada, em verificar como o ensino do latim ? visto no meio acad?mico, investigando ainda se este ensino tem acompanhado os progressos da reflex?o cient?fica sobre o fen?meno da linguagem humana e sobre as novas abordagens do ensino de l?nguas. Al?m disso, discutimos acerca da contribui??o que o estudo do latim pode oferecer para a forma??o acad?mica em Letras e procuramos identificar os campos do saber que podem contribuir para um redimensionamento do seu ensino. Em raz?o dessas quest?es, estabelecemos como objetivos do trabalho 1) Refletir sobre a situa??o atual do ensino do latim e sobre as causas do seu decl?nio; 2) Identificar sua representa??o social no meio acad?mico discente e docente do Curso de Letras, como forma de contribuir para a defini??o do papel que lhe cabe na forma??o docente; 3) Fazer um estudo explorat?rio de alguns comp?ndios que apresentam propostas alternativas de didatiza??o do latim, com o intento de verificar sua adequa??o ? nossa realidade e aos objetivos da forma??o em Letras; 4) Apresentar uma proposta alternativa de ensino do latim que leve em conta as contribui??es da Ling??stica Aplicada e que, contemplando os aspectos s?cio-hist?ricos e culturais da l?ngua, seja capaz de atender as exig?ncias da modernidade e da sua inser??o no curr?culo de Letras. O trabalho est? dividido em duas partes. A primeira constitui o quadro te?rico. Nela procedemos a um mapeamento introdut?rio dos estudos sobre o ensino do latim no Brasil, com uma breve incurs?o no panorama europeu e norte americano. Em seguida, tecemos considera??es sobre a concep??o do latim como l?ngua morta, apresentando argumentos para uma revis?o desta met?fora. Finalizamos com a apresenta??o dos conceitos de letramento, g?nero e cultura, que fundamentam teoricamente a nossa proposta de abordagem do ensino do latim. A segunda parte ? destinada ? reflex?o sobre as pr?ticas de letramento no ensino do latim. Come?amos examinando as respostas aos question?rios aplicados a alunos e professores, com o intuito de detectar as representa??es acerca do latim no meio acad?mico de Letras, refletimos sobre o ensino-aprendizagem do latim como uma pr?tica de letramento acad?mico, detendo-nos a seguir na an?lise de materiais utilizados para a didatiza??o do latim. Gymnastik åt alla? : Propaganda, kropp och medborgerliga visioner i den svenska gymnastikrörelsen på 30-talet

This thesis argues that the Swedish Gymnsatics League during the 1930’s articulated, what in previous research has been called a citizenship project. This citizenship project was formulated against the backdrop of the widely held gymnastic ideological belief about a ‘sound mind in a sound body’. In the historical context regarding the contemporary problem concerning the qualitative issue of the people, the gymnasts formulated gymnastics as an activity, aimed to produce an ideal, healthy citizen. In 1934, the Swedish gymnastics started a propaganda organization called National Society for promotion of Gymnastics (Riksföreningen för gymnastikens främjande) and its yearbook. The organization aimed to educate, and convince the Swedish population with the ultimate objective to make them active participants, and practitioners in gymnastic body culture. I argue that the gymnasts, through propaganda media as the yearbook, and the gymnastics display, addressed audiences as civic publics, with the potential of, though gymnastics, obtain properties connected to the idea of the ideal citizen. Regarding the conceptions of the gymnasts’ citizenship ideals, the essay demonstrates how the gymnasts argued that ideal civic virtues was reflected in the individual’s aesthetical bodily properties, which ultimately signified health. Thus, they argued that the properties liked to the ideal citizen only could be obtained through physical exercise, and the cultivation of a ‘healthy’ body, via gymnastic exercises. In the mid-1930’s the Gymnastics League undertook an international mission to display the superiority of Swedish gymnastics in front of foreign audiences, primarily by performing a non-competitive display at the Olympics in Berlin. I argue that this international outlook produced, and enhanced the national significance, and citizenship producing purpose of the gymnastics, especially when transcribed and mediated in the National Society’s yearbook, hence with the aim of addressing Swedish publics. The strategy of convincing the Swedish population of participating in gymnastics, through international exposure culminated at the Lingiad in Stockholm 1939, where the Gymnastics League invited to world in celebration of the centennial memory of the death of Per Hendrik Ling, the creator of Swedish gymnastics. This event displayed en masse what could be achieved through gymnastics, and enhanced the universal significance of Swedish culture in producing ascetically, and therefore civically sound, national citizens.

Alternative Approaches for the Registration of Terrestrial Laser Scanners Data using Linear/Planar Features

<p>Static terrestrial laser scanners have been increasingly used in three-dimensional data acquisition since it can rapidly provide accurate measurements with high resolution. Several scans from multiple viewpoints are necessary to achieve complete coverage of the surveyed objects due to occlusion and large object size. Therefore, in order to reconstruct three-dimensional models of the objects, the task of registration is required to transform several individual scans into a common reference frame. This thesis introduces three alternative approaches for the coarse registration of two adjacent scans, namely, feature-based approach, pseudo-conjugate point-based method, and closed-form solution. In the feature-based approach, linear and planar features in the overlapping area of adjacent scans are selected as registration primitives. The pseudo-conjugate point-based method utilizes non-corresponding points along common linear and planar features to estimate transformation parameters. The pseudo-conjugate point-based method is simpler than the feature-based approach since the partial derivatives are easier to compute. In the closed-form solution, a rotation matrix is first estimated by using a unit quaternion, which is a concise description of the rotation. Afterward, the translation parameters are estimated with non-corresponding points along the linear or planar features by using the pseudo-conjugate point-based method. Alternative approaches for fitting a line or plane to data with errors in three-dimensional space are investigated.</p><p><br></p><p>Experiments are conducted using simulated and real datasets to verify the effectiveness of the introduced registration procedures and feature fitting approaches. The proposed two approaches of line fitting are tested with simulated datasets. The results suggest that these two approaches can produce identical line parameters and variance-covariance matrix. The three registration approaches are tested with both simulated and real datasets. In the simulated datasets, all three registration approaches produced equivalent transformation parameters using linear or planar features. The comparison between the simulated linear and planar features shows that both features can produce equivalent registration results. In the real datasets, the three registration approaches using the linear or planar features also produced equivalent results. In addition, the results using real data indicates that the registration approaches using planar features produced better results than the approaches using linear features. The experiments show that the pseudo-conjugate point-based approach is easier to implement than the feature-based approach. The pseudo-conjugate point-based method and feature-based approach are nonlinear, so an initial guess of transformation parameters is required in these two approaches. Compared to the nonlinear approaches, the closed-form solution is linear and hence it can achieve the registration of two adjacent scans without the requirement of any initial guess for transformation parameters. Therefore, the pseudo-conjugate point-based method and closed-form solution are the preferred approaches for coarse registration using linear or planar features. In real practice, the planar features would have a better preference when compared to linear features since the linear features are derived indirectly by the intersection of neighboring planar features. To get enough lines with different orientations, planes that are far apart from each other have to be extrapolated to derive lines.</p><div><br></div>

北管在臺灣民間宗教中的文化意涵 —以臺北靈安社為例 / Cultural Content of Pei-kuan in Taiwan's Folk Religion -Taipei Ling-An Association as an Example

「北管」一詞實為一集合名詞,不僅指稱樂種,也指稱劇種,更指稱了一種傳統藝術文化型態,廣泛融入臺灣漢人的宗教、民俗與生命禮儀的各個層面,在移民社會中產生了新的傳統與認同。 「臺北靈安社」為子弟軒社,是臺灣北管文化圈內重要的團體類型。清同治10年(1871),為配合霞海城隍的祭典活動,由大稻埕地區從商的信徒們集資,共同籌組而成,係臺北霞海城隍廟的輿前子弟團。 臺北靈安社在以城隍信仰為中心所展現的一系列儀式行為上,不僅具有軒社、曲館與神明會的本質,負責在慶典時排場扮仙或迎神遶境,並展現出軒社與大稻埕在地公廟—霞海城隍廟、法主公廟、慈聖宮,以及比鄰的大龍峒保安宮,在人文地理與自然地理的緊密連結。另與大稻埕、大龍峒地區,以及臺北、基隆、宜蘭,乃至中臺灣、南臺灣等地之各子弟軒社、曲館、宮廟等單位,形成多元型態的交陪與競合關係,並隨歷史、社會的脈動而變遷。 本研究以民族誌(ethnography)之研究技術,嘗試詳盡的深描(thick description)臺北靈安社在臺灣民間宗教活動中的三大類型北管演出型態:「排場」、「出陣」和「演戲」。將北管音樂視為一種文化符碼(cultural code),對於臺灣的漢人而言,其表徵和指涉便是「儀式(ritual)之進行」,無論是聖誕慶典的遶境排場,或是婚喪喜慶的生命禮俗,北管音樂的聲響暗示人們處於某種閾限(仲介)狀態(liminality),是神聖與非常時期;儀式進行者以北管音樂宣告儀式之開始、延續儀式之進行,最後再以北管音樂來終止儀式。 本研究中臺北靈安社所展現的文化意涵,是以臺灣民間宗教的神話與神仙系譜中,所形塑之城隍爺神格特質為基礎,延伸出陪祀的文武判官及謝范將軍,並在合境平安的信仰訴求下,由臺北靈安社雕塑神將,負責執行遶境的儀式行為。臺北靈安社的遶境,傳承臺灣地區以北管帶領神將、神轎的三段式陣頭模式。同時為此儀仗陣頭製作出各式裝飾文物,充分發揮傳統民間工藝水準,包括西燈、彩牌、花籃鼓架及大量的繡旗等。 此外,為作戲酬神,也為遶境所需,傳習福祿派的北管音樂系統,將儀式行為與信仰象徵延伸至北管扮仙戲的舞臺上,同時也因此奉祀了傳統戲曲之神—西秦王爺,自稱梨園子弟,形成一個由北管音樂傳習及西秦王爺信仰所凝聚的社群(social group)。 臺北靈安社透過上述一系列的儀式行為,將虛擬的神聖世界以象徵化的手法與世俗生活連結,並透過神將、北管等傳統藝術之傳習,以及城隍爺、西秦王爺的信仰凝聚力,還有與各宮廟、軒社間的連結交陪,形塑出獨特的子弟軒社文化;成為臺灣民間風俗、宗教活動中不可或缺的要素,具備傳統性、地方性、歷史性、文化性及典範性。 但臺北靈安社在展現子弟軒社文化的同時,也面臨軒社經營與北管牌子散軼、俗化的困境。歷經清代、日治、民國三代,臺北靈安社不斷因應著臺灣社會環境的變遷,遵循不同政權的政策法令,加入不同的協會組織,嘗試與學術文化界合作,致力於文化資產保存工作;這些歷史上先賢們與目前社員們多元的努力,都為臺北靈安社的延續與發展提供了進路,這些記錄對其他軒社、曲館、武館、神明會等,這些和臺灣民間宗教相關的團體都將有所貢獻。 / “Pei-kuan” is a collective term, which refers not only to music genre but a type of genre as well. Moreover, it refers to a kind of traditional artistic and cultural type. It merges Chinese religions, folk customs, and rituals of life in Taiwan, which results in a new tradition and identification in the migrating society. . “Taipei Ling-An Association” is voluntary association, which one of the important associations in the Pei-kuan cultural circle in Taiwan. In 1871, the tenth year of Tungji period, in order to serve the festival held by Xia-Hai City God, the association was established by its believers engaging in business who came from Dadaocheng and raised the money to set up the voluntary association of Taipei Xia-Hai City God Temple. The rituals developed by Taipei Ling-An Association are based on the belief in City God. The rituals have derived their essence from Voluntary Association, Music Association, and the Association of gods. Besides, Taipwi Ling-An Association is in charge of playing the role of God, welcoming God, and Pilgrimage Procession, which show the tight alignment between cultural geography and natural geography of Voluntary Association and the Local God Temple in Dadaocheng-- Xia-Hai City God Temple, Fachukong Temple, Cihsheng Temple, and Dalongdong Baoan Temple nearby. The multiple modes of accompanying and competitive relations formed by the connection among Voluntary Association, Associations of Music, temples located in Dadaocheng, Dalongdong area, Taipei, Keelung, Yilan, the central Taiwan, and the Southern Taiwan are changed with the flow of history and social changes. This study is based on ethnography to conduct a thick description of the three important types of pei-kuan performance performed in Taiwanese folk religions in Taipei Ling-An Association: “concert,” “procession,” and “drama.” Taking music of pei-kuan as a cultural code, for the Han Chinese living in Taiwan, people here deem Pei-kuan as a symbol and reference to “the procession of ritual.” Whatever the procession and concert in birthday celebration of gods or the life rituals of marriage, funeral, or festivals, Pei-kuan music implies people are in a kind of liminality, between the period of divinity and critical moments; the performers of the rituals begin, continue, and end the rituals with Pei-kuan music. In this study, the cultural content bringing forth by Taipei Ling-An Association is based on the divine characters of City God who is listed in Taiwanese folk mythology and the genealogy of gods, and then develop the literary and martial judgements and General Hsieh and Fan accompanying the rituals. Basing on the appeal of peace around the area, Taipei Ling-An Association was commissioned to carve the image of God General and conduct the procedure and ritual of entering the area. The pilgrimage activity of Taipei Ling-An Temple inherits the three-segmented mode of the leader of the procession—God General and God palanquin led by Pei-kuan. Meanwhile, the ritual of the procession has created different kinds of historical relics, as shows the spirit of the traditional folk artefacts, including palace lantern, carved plaque, carved drum stand, and great numbers of embroidered flags. Besides, in order to perform a drama for thanking gods and meet a demand from the pilgrimage activity, the musical system of pei-kuan follows the Fulu style to extend the ritual activities and the symbol of religions to the drama of playing the role of God on the stage. In this way, the tradition forms a social group made from the combination of the tradition of Pei-kuan music and the belief in Lord Xiqin, the God of traditional Chinese drama and called himself as the Children of the Pear Garden. Through the rituals mentioned above, Taipei Ling-An Association combines the virtual divine world with the secular living styles by means of symbolization. It also forms a unique voluntary association culture by inheriting the traditional arts of General God, Pei-kuan, and merging the beliefs in Lord City God and Lord Xiqin, and the experience exchange with different temples, and voluntary associations. All of these create a necessary elements in Taiwan’s folk customs and religious activities, which has the essence of tradition, historicity, culture, and paradigm. While Taipei Ling-An Association is developing the culture of voluntary association, it is facing the dilemmas of the operation of the association and the dispersing and secularization of Pei-kuan sheet music as well. Through Quing dynasty, Japanese occupation period, and the Republic of China, Taipei Ling-An Association is devoted to following different policies and regulations of different political powers, participating different organizations, attempting to cooperate with academic and cultural fields, and preserving cultural heritages. Owing to the efforts taken by the predecessors and the current members, Taipei Ling-An Association is able to continue and develop. These records have great contributions to other folk religion associations in Taiwan, such as voluntary association, music association, martial arts association, and the Association of gods.
