Secondary school teachers’ experiences of learning supportHannah, Julia Elizabeth 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEd)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Secondary school teachers are faced daily with many challenges when supporting learners with diverse needs. These challenges can influence their ability to perform their role of supporting such learners in the classroom. Even though learning support in the secondary school is a complex multi-level phenomenon, teachers are expected to ensure that all the learners reach their full potential. The aim of this study was to explore and describe secondary school teachers’ experiences of supporting learners with diverse needs in challenging circumstances. Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological model framed the research enquiry. Proximal processes and their related concepts were used as tools to explore and describe the teachers’ approach to learning support in a secondary school. Since this study was an exploration of a phenomenon qualitative research methods were applied. The research methods added rich information using various techniques. These included an activity in which the teachers reflected on their experiences, individual semi-structured interviews, a focus group interview, research questions and narrative discussions with participants. The data collected was analysed using the method of constant comparison. Findings from the analysed data revealed the teachers’ concerns and the challenges they faced in their classrooms while supporting their learners. Although they described these challenges and adverse circumstances as barriers, they nevertheless appeared as caring, confident professionals who had both the potential and the desire to advance their own development and to carry out effective learning support.
Against this background, the teachers’ own needs, whether emotional, social, cognitive or developmental, were vital to their ability to support effective learning in the classroom. Aangesien hierdie studie ʼn verkennende ondersoek was, is kwalitatiewe navorsingsmetodes gebruik.

Exploring opportunities and challenges for achieving the integration of indigenous knowledge systems into environmental education processes: a case study of the Sebakwe Environmental Education programme (SEEP) in ZimbabweZazu, Cryton January 2007 (has links)
The role and value of indigenous knowledge systems in enhancing and contextualizing education has long been recognized (UNESCO, 1978). Against this background a lot of research focusing on the documentation and study of the world’s indigenous knowledge systems, including those of Southern African countries was done. However, within the Southern African context much of this research did not translate into practical curriculum processes leaving educational processes de-contextualized (O’Donoghue, 2002; Mokuku, 2004; Shava, 2005). The linkages between the school, the home and the wider community remained weak (Taylor & Mulhall, 2001). The net effect of the limited integration of indigenous knowledge systems into mainstream environmental education processes has been that indigenous learners (such as those within the Sebakwe rural community) continued to get exposed to two different world views, the western scientific world view and the everyday life world views. The integration of indigenous knowledge systems into mainstream education such as the Sebakwe Environmental Education programme (SEEP) is one way of contextualizing education and improving its relevance to learners’ socio-cultural backgrounds. This research was conceptualized against such a context and seeks to explore the opportunities and challenges for the integration of indigenous knowledge systems into the Sebakwe Environmental Education programme. The ultimate purpose of this research is to contextualize SEEP both in its epistemology, and pedagogy. The research was designed and conducted within a qualitative interpretive case study methodology. The methodology involved a three-phased data collection method namely document analysis, focus group interviews and an inquiry-based workshop. The data was then analyzed and interpreted in relation to a set of theoretical perspectives. This research concluded that there is a possibility of integrating indigenous knowledge systems into the Sebakwe Environmental Education programme. Based on the findings the research came up with a list of recommendations to guide the process of working with indigenous knowledge within the Sebakwe Environmental Education programme.

January 2015 (has links)
The paper presents two guiding focus: on the one hand the ethnic and racial issues and on the other hand a very common practice at schools - school research. Thus, it aimed to investigate the construction of ethnic and racial notions in adolescent students and intervene in this process through active methodologies inspired by the constructivism. Therefore, an educational intervention was carried out, revisiting the practice of school research and giving it a new didactic and pedagogical treatment, so to constitute a viable tool in the teaching-learning, anchored in the discovery and investigative spirit, giving learners greater autonomy in this ongoing process of knowledge construction. The study gathered 28 teenagers, aged from 12 to 14 years old, elementary school students from public schools in São Paulo. The chosen methodological design was action research, according to the following phases: 1st - initial diagnosis by clinical interviews, in order to probe the beliefs of students on ethnic notions; 2nd - pedagogical intervention, consisting of 23 activities involving school research and enrichment activities for it; 3rd - Final assessment of the investigated action, by reapplying the same instrument used in the initial diagnosis. Collected data were categorized quantitatively and qualitatively and analysis of the results showed an evolution in the way the investigated subjects understood the ethnic and racial issues, as 75% of these ... Opportunities for Change : The impact of putting marginalized user groups first in urban redesignGarord, Lucian Madalin January 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims at discovering how the city of Oslo can use an opportunity in rebuilding its city centre and begin to include the voices and opinions of marginalised communities that were otherwise previously ignored in planning processes. The theory and approach utilised throughout this thesis is feminist urban planning and gender mainstreaming because the two call for the equality and intersectionality so to appropriately rebuild cities with the needs of many in mind. As such, my hypotheses are that the car free centre will not improve the quality of life for marginalised user groups and the lack of gender mainstreaming policy has negatively impacted the five pilot project areas. Three methodologies have been employed: observations of the five pilot projects, interviews or questionnaires to stakeholders, and secondary analysis of literature. The results from the observations were varied, with some examples of gender mainstreaming practices implemented while others fell short and safety of users was questioned. Some practitioners had knowledge on feminist urban planning theory, whilst others had vague ideas of what it meant and how it was implementable in practice. To conclude, implementing gender mainstreaming policies would have gravely assisted the five pilot projects.
