Our purpose with this study is to examine how the visitors at the public library of Stenungsund find the library service, if they are pleased with it and what they expect from the library in the future. Why they visit the library and what they actually do there? We also wanted to find out if the visitors would be interested in getting more computers and information technology into the library. Since the library has the highest rates of library loans in Sweden we are interested in, if this has anything to do with the library location which is close to the shopping centre of the town. We used questionnaires in our study and received 560 answers out of 580 handed out to the visitors. It is our conclusion that the visitors are more than pleased with the library service, and also that the location of the library is of importance to how frequent the library is being visited.

The aim of this master's thesis is a comparative study on units for civic information in Göteborg. The study is based on a project currently in progress at the main public library in Göteborg. It is observed that according to the library's mission statement the library aims to become the most competent intermediary of civic information in Göteborg. This statement suggests a competitive strategy towards other intermediaries of civic information. The mission statement does, however, also state that their goal is to be obtained in cooperation with other intermediaries. Thus, we will study how four public service units for civic information in Göteborg operate. These are then compared to the department of civic information at the main public library. Five areas are considered: 1) the definition of the concept of civic information, 2) mission statements, 3) target groups and users, 4) service offered, 5) personnel qualifications and accessibility of the information unit. The study is based on interviews with representatives at the different units. We conclude that for citizens to be informed, individual activity in acquiring information is necessary. Also, one service unit for civic information rarely offers the full range of the civic information. Consequently, there is a need for a number of information units. Each unit may have their own profile and thereby fill different needs. Thus, in order to provide the citizens of Göteborg with the best service possible, we find that cooperation between public service units for civic information is preferred to competition. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Med färre platsbaserade kontor att ta sina frågor till kommer allt fler besökare till folkbiblioteken för att få stöd och assistans. Enligt tidigare forskning agerar folkbiblioteken som medborgarkontor, där de hanterar ärenden utanför deras uppdrag och deras kompetens. Forskning har även visat en koppling mellan denna typ av arbete och emotional labour, eller emotionellt arbete, och detta begrepp är den huvudsakliga teorin uppsatsen utgår från, som beskrivet i Hochschilds The Managed Heart (2012). Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka bibliotekariers upplevelse och erfarenhet av medborgarärenden på folkbibliotek och de känslor som kan framkomma av arbetet. För att genomföra det utfördes semistrukturerade intervjuer med folkbibliotekarier från diverse olika arbetsplatser i en mellanstor stad i Sverige, sedan en tematisk analys. Analysen visar att bibliotekarier delar många känslor och upplevelser, där de mest prevalenta var en frustration mot andra instanser i samhället, att balansera riktlinjer och värderingar, bristande kommunikationen mellan biblioteket och andra aktörer, och användningen av känslohanteringsstrategier. En respondents erfarenheter, från ett bibliotek med särskiljande hantering av medborgarärenden, diskuteras med särskilt fokus i analysen som kontrast mot övriga respondenter. Resultaten är relevanta för både utveckling av forskning och för den praktiska verksamheten.

Idag ställs stora krav på en flexibel identitetsprocess och det innebär att den sociala miljön är mer föränderlig och osäkrare än tidigare. Den fysiska miljön däremot, utgör en trygghet i att den är stabil för var dag som går.</p><p>Vår presentation kommer att handla om hur det lokala rummet, både ur ett socialt och fysiskt perspektiv, påverkar identitetsskapandet för den enskilde individen. Genom de studier vi presenterar hoppas vi kunna ge svar på vilka effekter som det lokala rummet, i form av både fysisk och social miljö, har för de identitetsskapande processer som vi lever med.</p><p>Våra studier samverkar till hur vi kan betrakta det lokala rummet som en helhet. En av studierna visar på kombinationen av de externa och interna faktorerna och deras ömsesidiga inverkan och påverkan av varandra medan de tre övriga främst har visat på betydelsen och meningen av de interna faktorerna. Vi presenterar teorier kring denna helhet som, vill vi hävda, utgör den lokala organisation som den differentierade identiteten rör sig i och som vi relaterar vårt komplexa identitetsskapande till.</p>

In this master’s thesis I examine how services like societal service and citizen service are described and motivated in municipal library plans over time, and how the design of these library plans affects the descriptions of service. Services are in this thesis described as services that members of the municipality needs help with, in order to perform tasks important in their everyday lives. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted these types of services in Swedish public libraries since local re-strictions affected the use and non-use of these services in the library. Previous research show that in Sweden during the pandemic, access to computers in the library was crucial to some visitors in order to pay bills and communicate with authorities. Therefore, it is of interest to study how this phenomenon is portrayed in strategic public library planning, particularly in plans established in the midst of a crisis. The material of the study consists of 22 library plans from 11 different Swedish municipalities. The material is described and analysed through qual-ity content analysis and the perspective of new institutional theory.In the analysis I identify four themes in which services are described and motivated. These themes connect to the documents descriptions of knowledge, (digital) participation, user needs and the library space. The design of the library plans has implications for the description of service and are illustrated through the municipalities different approaches to document revision and the use of references to other documents in the texts.The study also shows that the Swedish library law, which is ruled to be the point of departure in the design of the library plans, has been interpreted differently when describing and motivating these types of services. In some library plans the law hasn’t been interpreted at all, merely mimicked. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.
