Funeral leaders share the ministry of comfort with others. They make a specific religious contribution towards restoring life or decontaminating from death, which affects the faith and hope of the bereaved. Their ministry responds to a need of the bereaved by
affirming community in the face of death. It is based on spirituality and grounded in the biblical and apostolic tradition; it is carried out in a catholic contextualisation. The leaders' insertion into both the cultural background and the religious realm encourages
contextualisation. Their verbal proclamation is done in various ways and is linked to ritual. It reflects the three dimensions of the model employed in pastoral theology by taking life seriously, interpreting it in the light of faith, and leading a celebration that opens up the future of the participants. The leaders' proclamation is sincere when they link cultural family-procedures and church rituals in a parallel way. Sincerity suffers when community leaders, used to provide a comprehensive service, cannot preside over the promised celebration of the Eucharist, which could be the culmination of the rite of passage. Their ministry remains incomplete because of factors beyond their
control. It nevertheless contributes to justice in many ways, in particular by deploying local people. While the ministry is carried out independently, it depends on collaboration with the pastoral staff, in particular the priests. They safeguard the quality of ministry by
formation and through supervision. The collaborative formation contributes to the cultural insertion of the local and expatriate staff and enhances their competence. This collaborative ministry serves the bereaved, the community of faith, and theology. It allows the development of a contextualised liturgy, and a local theology. It is a step forward on the road towards a genuine form of community ministry in this particular African context. It corresponds with contemporary secular approaches towards leadership and management. African approaches emphasise the need for
contextualised management forms. They assume the compatibility of different practices employed in different contexts. The comprehensively grounded ministry seems to contribute to the avoidance or overcoming of some of the grave shortcomings of

In search of the understanding of the Old Testament in Africa : the case of the LembaLe Roux, M. 11 1900 (has links)
This project seeks to determine, to what extent the culture of early Israel (1250-1000 BC) is
similar to African cultures, more specifically, to that of the Lemba. However, a comparison
between the cultures of early Israel and those of certain African tribes is not the primary
objective in this case. This project is neither an anthropological study nor does it intend to
mainly focus on the Lemba as such -though this may appear to be the case. This endeavour primarily
fits into the ambit of Old Testament Studies. The investigation into the Lemba is meant to be
subsidiary to the point of contingence between their culture and Old Testament customs and
traditions, and how this information affects the interpretation of the Old Testament and its
teaching in Africa. A number of comparisons between the early Israelite religion as reflected in
the Old Testament and the Lemba are drawn. Though the qualitative research (inductive approach) is
employed in the field work, the greatest part of the data on religious perspectives and practices
is mediated by the theory of a phenomenological approach as advocated by Ninian Smart on matters of
experience, mythology, ritual, and ethical/judicial dimensions. Therefore, the approach is also
deductive.
The Lemba is a very specific group with claims about Israelite/Judaic origins. Their early
departure from Israel (according to them ca 586 BC) can mean that there are remnants of a very
ancient type oflsraelite religion, now valuable when juxtaposed to that of early Israel. This study
takes Lemba traditions seriously, but finally does not verify or falsify Lemba claims - but the
outcomes in this thesis may take this debate a step further.
Their claims make them special and extremely interesting to study from the point of view of oral
cultures. Their oral culture is constitutive of their world-view and self-understanding or
identity. It incorporates the role of oral traditions, history and historiography and parallels
are drawn between orality in early Israelite and Lemba religions. The reciprocity between orality
and inscripturation of traditions, yielding valuable information on what may have happened in the
developent of traditions in Israel, are also attended to in this project.
Nevertheless, this project is primarily a search for the understanding and relevance of the Old
Testament in Afiica and is, therefore, a selective and not an exhaustive comparison between the
Lemba and early Israel. And so, taking cognisance of the hermeneutic of contextualisation in
Africa in particular, a teaching module syllabus for Old Testament Studies is developed, of which
the very strands of religion among the Lemba and early Israel are constitutive for teaching Old

Die vorliegende Forschungsarbeit untersucht den Zusammenhang zwischen theologischer Ausbildung
und missionarischer Herausforderung im deutschsprachigen Europa. Dabei steht die Forschungsfrage
im Zentrum, was der sich verändernde Kontext und die damit verbundene missionarische Herausforderung
der Kirche für eine Reform der theologischen Ausbildung bedeuten. Zu dieser Fragestellung
werden aus ökumenischer und evangelikaler Perspektive Stimmen laut, welche eine Reform hin zu
einer missionalen theologischen Ausbildung fordern, welche somit in Wesen und Funktion von der
Missio Dei her zu verstehen sei. Die vorliegende Untersuchung geht der Frage nach, was eine solche
Forderung bedeuten könnte und welche grundsätzlichen Implikationen sich für die theologische Ausbildung
ergeben.
In einem ersten Teil werden ökumenische, evangelische und evangelikale Impulse zur Reform der
theologischen Ausbildung und dem Zusammenhang der missionarischen Herausforderung dargestellt,
theoretische Sensibilität und Kernkategorien für die empirische Untersuchung entwickelt. Im Hauptteil
der Forschungsarbeit wird die obige Fragestellung mittels einer qualitativ-empirischen Untersuchung
unter Leitern von evangelikalen theologischen Ausbildungstätten im deutschsprachigen Europa untersucht.
Mit halbstandardisierten Experten-Interviews werden nach Grounded Theory und mittels Typologienbildung
vier Handlungsmuster als mögliche Reaktionen theologischer Ausbildungsverantwortlicher
dargestellt. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse der empirischen Untersuchung unter Einbezug
der Literatur evaluiert und eine missionswissenschaftliche Auswertung hinsichtlich der Theologie, der
Lerntheorie und der Kompetenzorientierung einer missionalen theologischen Ausbildung vorgenommen.
Die vorliegende Forschungsarbeit leistet somit einen dreifachen Beitrag. Erstens stellt sie ökumenische,
evangelische und evangelikale Beiträge und empirisch erarbeitete Handlungsmuster zum Thema
Reform theologischer Ausbildung im Hinblick auf die missionarische Herausforderung dar. Zweitens
bietet sie aus missionswissenschaftlicher Perspektive einen Diskussionbeitrag zu einer möglichen Reform theologischer Ausbildung. Drittens werden konkrete Impulse zu Theologie, Lerntheorie und

erarbeitet / This dissertation examines the relationship between theological education and missionary challenges
in German-speaking Europe. The central research question is what the changing context and related
missionary challenges of the church signify for a reform of theological training. Voices from an
ecumenical and evangelical perspective are demanding a reform of theological education towards a
missional approach, an approach defined in its identity as well as its function from the Missio Dei. The
following study pursues the question as to what such demands entail and what implications follow for
theological education in general.
The first part presents the ecumenical, evangelical and evangelic impulse towards a reform of theological
education and a link with missionary challenges; theoretic sensibilities and key categories are
developed for the empirical examination. The main section of the study examines the abovementioned
question through a qualitative-empirical study of the leadership of evangelical theological
educational establishments in German-speaking Europe. With the help of half-standardised interviews
of experts, four action samples were presented as possible reactions, according to grounded theory and
by means of typology development. Finally, the results of the empirical examination were evaluated in
the light of the literature and a missional-empirical evaluation was made regarding the theology, the
learning theory and the competence orientation of a missional-theological education.
This dissertation thus makes a threefold contribution. Firstly, it constitutes ecumenical, evangelical
and evangelic contributions and an empirically developed plan of action on the theme of the reform of
theological education in light of missionary challenges. Secondly, it offers a contribution from a missional-
empirical perspective to the discussion of a possible reform of theological education. Thirdly, it

Aufgabe der Untersuchung ist es, die wichtigsten missiologischen Auffassungen und Überzeugungen von Johannes Lepsius aus der Vielzahl seiner veröffentlichten Schriften zu erheben und sie dann erstmals systematisiert in einem Ge¬samtüberblick darzustellen. Die Besonderheit besteht dabei darin, dass sich die Missiologie von Johan¬nes Lepsius nur aus der Zusammenschau von zahlreichen Einzeläußerungen erschließen lässt, die sich zumeist in kleineren Aufsätzen und Zeitschriftenartikeln finden lassen. Somit ist es notwendig, seine einzelnen Schriften in ihrem jeweiligen - auch biographischen - Kontext wahrzunehmen und zu inter¬pretieren. Aus der Aufarbeitung der theologischen Grundlagen von Johannes Lepsius' Missiologie, sei¬ner Ansichten bezüglich der Missionsarbeit unter Muslimen und einiger weiterer spezieller missiologi¬scher Fragestellungen wird deutlich, dass Johannes Lepsius trotz durchaus vorhandener Parallelen zu anderen missiologischen Entwürfen in theologischer und missiologischer Hinsicht als eigenständiger Denker zu betrachten ist. The object of this research work is the missiology of Johannes Lepsius. The task of the investigation is to collate the most important missiological opinions and beliefs of Johannes Lepsius from the large number of his published writing and then to present them in a systematic overview for the first time. They are characterised specifically by the fact that the missiology of Johannes Lepsius can only be de¬veloped from an overview summary of numerous individual statements which are generally to be found in smaller papers and journal articles. Therefore it is necessary to appreciate and interpret his individual writings in their specific - and also biographical - contexts. From the reworking of the theological prin¬ciples of Johannes Lepsius' missiology, his views on mission work amongst Muslims and some other special missiological questions, it becomes clear that Johannes Lepsius - despite existing parallels with other missiological models from a theological and missiological point of view - is to be viewed as an independent thinker. The knowledge of the missiological beliefs which underpin Lepsius' very varied missionary, theological, socio-diaconical and political activities makes it possible to have a better un¬derstanding of his biography that from the outside seems so incoherent. Das Engagement der Senioren in der Generationenarbeit erfolgt in Form von Workshops und weiteren verschiedenen Projekten und versteht sich als gemeinwesendiakonisches Projekt in Kooperation zwischen Kirche und Kindergarten. Die Studie untersucht die subjektiven Erfahrungen der ehrenamtlich tätigen Senioren mit Kindern, die aus den intergenerationellen Begegnungen hervorgehen und deutet diese auf ihre missionstheologische Relevanz. Unter Rückgriff auf praktisch-theologische Erkenntnisse aus der Lebenswelt der Senioren gehen wichtige Ergebnisse in die in der kontextuellen Theologie und Missiologie verorteten Arbeit ein. Diese münden wiederum in praktische Empfehlungen zur generationenübergreifenden Arbeit für Kirche und Kommune. / The current study aims at investigating the experiences of elderly at the age of 60plus, when contributing with their knowledge and time during their work with children. As a research setting, an evangelic kindergarden has been selected in Apen, the northern part of Lower Saxony, Germany. The engagement of seniors in this so-called generation work is understood as a diaconal practical project which is defined as social welfare work. It is implemented in form of different projects and performed in cooperation with the church and the kindergarden. The research explores firstly, the subjective experiences of the volunteering seniors during their intergenerational encounters. Secondly, the inter generational encounters are furthermore analyzed regarding its missiological-theological relevance. Practical theological insights, gained by analyzing the seniors’ lifeworld, result as relevant for the research in the domain of contextual theology and missiology. Das Forschungsprojekt untersucht Bekehrungsmotive von südsudanesischen Migranten, die in einem islamischen Kontext leben. Dazu wird zunächst das biblisch-theologische Bekeh¬rungsverständnis erhoben und im Kontext seiner kirchengeschichtlichen Entwicklung dar¬gestellt. Da jede Bekehrung ein multidimensionaler Prozess ist, der neben theologischen Fragestellungen auch soziologische, anthropologische und religionspsychologische Aspekte enthält, wird ein multidimensionaler Ansatz zur Erforschung von Bekehrungsmotiven konzipiert und ein Forschungswerkzeug erstellt, dass den Kontext südsudanesischer Migranten aufnimmt. Dieses kommt im Rahmen einer Pilotstudie zum Einsatz, die aus fünf Konvertiten-Interviews besteht. Zuerst wird der Inhalt jedes Interviews aus theologischer, soziologischer, religionspsychologischer und anthropologischer Sicht separat erhoben. Danach werden die unterschiedlichen Betrachtungsweisen in einen kritischen Dialog gebracht, um die Bekehrungsmotive zu bestimmen, welche den Kategorien kognitiv-religiös, mystisch-religiös, affektiv, experimentell oder sozial-politisch zugeordnet werden. Zum Schluss wird der Ertrag aller Interviews zu einem Gesamtergebnis verbunden und einer selbstkritischen Evaluierung unterzogen.
Summary
This dissertation examines conversion motives of Southern Sudanese migrants who live in an Islamic context. First of all a theological view of conversion in scripture and its development in the church history is presented. Since every conversion is a multi-dimensional process containing not only theological problems but also sociological, anthropological and religio¬psychlogical aspects, a multi-dimensional approach and a reseach methodology are designed for above context. This methodology is used for a pilot study of five interviews with converts. Each interview is examined separately from a theological, sociological, religio-psychological and anthropological analysis. After this the different views are brought into a critical dialog in order to identify the motives of conversion which are related to cognitive-religious, mystical¬religious, affective, experimental or social-political categories. Reaching the unreached Sudan Belt : Guinness, Kumm and the Sudan-Pioneer-MissionSauer, Christof, 1963- 11 1900 (has links)
This missiological project seeks to study the role of the Guinnesses and Kumms in reaching the
Sudan Belt, particularly through the Sudan-Pionier-Mission (SPM) founded in 1900.
The term Sudan Belt referred to Africa between Senegal and Ethiopia, at that period one of the
largest areas unreached by Christian missionaries. Grattan Guinness (1835-1910) at that time was
the most influential promoter of faith missions for the Sudan. The only initiative based in
Germany was the SPM, founded by Guinness, his daughter Lucy (1865-1906), and her German husband
Karl Kumm (1874-1930). Kumm has undeservedly been forgotten, and his early biography as a
missionary and explorer in the deserts of Egypt is here brought to light again.
The early SPM had to struggle against opposition in Germany. Faith missions were
considered unnecessary, and missions to Muslims untimely by influential representatives of
classical missions. The SPM was seeking to reach the Sudan Belt via the Nile from Aswan. The most
promising figure for this venture was the Nubian Samuel Ali Hiseen (1863-1927), who accomplished a
scripture colportage tour through Nubia. Unfortunately, he was disregarded by the first German
missionary, Johannes Kupfemagel (1866-1937).
When the SPM failed to reach the Sudan Belt due to political restrictions, Kumm and the
SPM board were divided in their strategies. Kumm planned to pursue a new route via the Niger River,
seeking support in Great Britain rather independently. The SPM, holding on to Aswan, dismissed
Kumm, and began to decline until it made a new start in 1905, but for a long time remained a
local mission work in Upper Egypt. The Sudan United Mission however, founded by the Kumms in 1904,
did indeed reach the Sudan Belt.
An analysis of the SPM reveals its strengths and weaknesses. The SPM grew out of the Holiness
movement and shared the urgency, which made faith missions successful, but also was the SPM's
weakness, as it suffered from ill-preparedness. The SPM innovatively gathered together
single women from the nobility in a community of service for missions under its

Missio Dei her zu verstehen sei. Die vorliegende Untersuchung geht der Frage nach, was eine solche
Forderung bedeuten könnte und welche grundsätzlichen Implikationen sich für die theologische Ausbildung
ergeben.
In einem ersten Teil werden ökumenische, evangelische und evangelikale Impulse zur Reform der
theologischen Ausbildung und dem Zusammenhang der missionarischen Herausforderung dargestellt,
theoretische Sensibilität und Kernkategorien für die empirische Untersuchung entwickelt. Im Hauptteil
der Forschungsarbeit wird die obige Fragestellung mittels einer qualitativ-empirischen Untersuchung
unter Leitern von evangelikalen theologischen Ausbildungstätten im deutschsprachigen Europa untersucht.
Mit halbstandardisierten Experten-Interviews werden nach Grounded Theory und mittels Typologienbildung
vier Handlungsmuster als mögliche Reaktionen theologischer Ausbildungsverantwortlicher
dargestellt. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse der empirischen Untersuchung unter Einbezug
der Literatur evaluiert und eine missionswissenschaftliche Auswertung hinsichtlich der Theologie, der
Lerntheorie und der Kompetenzorientierung einer missionalen theologischen Ausbildung vorgenommen.
Die vorliegende Forschungsarbeit leistet somit einen dreifachen Beitrag. Erstens stellt sie ökumenische,
evangelische und evangelikale Beiträge und empirisch erarbeitete Handlungsmuster zum Thema
Reform theologischer Ausbildung im Hinblick auf die missionarische Herausforderung dar. Zweitens
bietet sie aus missionswissenschaftlicher Perspektive einen Diskussionbeitrag zu einer möglichen Reform theologischer Ausbildung. Drittens werden konkrete Impulse zu Theologie, Lerntheorie und
Kompetenzorientierung einer missionalen theologischen Ausbildung für den deutschsprachigen Kontext
erarbeitet / This dissertation examines the relationship between theological education and missionary challenges
in German-speaking Europe. The central research question is what the changing context and related
missionary challenges of the church signify for a reform of theological training. Voices from an
ecumenical and evangelical perspective are demanding a reform of theological education towards a
missional approach, an approach defined in its identity as well as its function from the Missio Dei. The
following study pursues the question as to what such demands entail and what implications follow for
theological education in general.
The first part presents the ecumenical, evangelical and evangelic impulse towards a reform of theological
education and a link with missionary challenges; theoretic sensibilities and key categories are
developed for the empirical examination. The main section of the study examines the abovementioned
question through a qualitative-empirical study of the leadership of evangelical theological
educational establishments in German-speaking Europe. With the help of half-standardised interviews
of experts, four action samples were presented as possible reactions, according to grounded theory and
by means of typology development. Finally, the results of the empirical examination were evaluated in
the light of the literature and a missional-empirical evaluation was made regarding the theology, the
learning theory and the competence orientation of a missional-theological education.
This dissertation thus makes a threefold contribution. Firstly, it constitutes ecumenical, evangelical
and evangelic contributions and an empirically developed plan of action on the theme of the reform of
theological education in light of missionary challenges. Secondly, it offers a contribution from a missional-
empirical perspective to the discussion of a possible reform of theological education. Thirdly, it
develops a concrete impetus towards the theology, learning theory and competence orientation of a
