Studier i Stig Dagermans diktning / A Dream in the House of Law : The Moment, Man and the Transcendent: Studies in the Writings of Stig Dagerman

Apelgren, Rikard January 2010 (has links)
The main aim of the dissertation is to examine the importance of the moment in relation to human experience and to the narrative in the writings of Stig Dagerman (1923-1954), primarily the novels Ormen (The Snake, 1945), De dömdas ö (The Island of the Doomed, 1946), Bränt barn (A Burnt Child, 1948), Bröllopsbesvär (Wedding Worries, 1949), the short stories "Den hängdes träd" (The Hanging Tree, 1945) and "De röda vagnarna" (The Red Wagons, 1946). The dissertation shows the moment as being of crucial importance by serving as the point of time for the fictional character’s critical experience. The moment also functions as a structuring principle for the narrative. In this, the discussion is supported by the theories on the chronotope found in the work of Mikhail Bakhtin. With the ideas of Michael Riffaterre as the principal theoretical basis in the study, the reading of the texts focuses on a matrix common to the works discussed. The reading goes from a description of the primarily profane subject matter of the narrative to an understanding of the religious discourse in the works. This interpretation receives additional support in the theories on religious and mystical experiences found in Rudolf Otto. Finally, the dissertation focuses on man’s sensitivity to, and longing for, a transcendental entity or a God in the broadest sense – a longing which manifests itself in different ways in these texts and is set against the human predicament of being. Man’s desperate religious longing for a transcendental entity or a God are ultimately understood as the significance or principle of unity in the texts under discussion.

Av denna världen? : Emil Gustafson, moderniteten och den evangelikala väckelsen / Of the World? : Emil Gustafson, Modernity and Evangelicalism

Halldorf, Joel January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between evangelicalism and modernity with the Swedish holiness preacher Emil Gustafson (1862–1900) as a case. This is achieved by comparing Gustafson’s spirituality with Charles Taylor’s characterization of modernity. The investigation identifies five central themes in Gustafson’s spirituality: conversion, calling, suffering, sanctification, and spiritual experience. With regard to these themes paral-lels with modernity are noted. For example, the analysis shows that modern individualism influenced Gustafson’s view of conversion, and that instrumental rationality informed his evaluations of his own work as a preacher. But there are also instances where he distanced himself from modernity. He did not embrace a modern optimistic anthropology, or the view of suffering as purely negative. It is concluded that Gustafson is neither anti-modern, nor identical to Taylor’s depiction of modernity. He represents one kind of modernity. One that is theocentric rather than anthropo-centric. In order to uphold this theocentric character Gustafson’s opposition to the basic struc-ture of modernity had to be grounded in social practices. For instance, his negative anthropol-ogy was grounded in the revival-meeting where outsiders were called to repent and rely on God rather than themselves. Based on the results from this study it is suggested that evangelicalism should be inter-preted as neither in conflict with modernity, nor in continuity with it, but rather as a kind of modernity. There are multiple modernities, and evangelicalism is one of them.

Desire of Union

Mozafari, Ardavan 27 April 2010 (has links)
In our modern world, a signifi cant number of traditional values have been dramatically manipulated, taking on new meanings and definitions quite diff erent from their original or natural signifi cance. Moreover, these traditional values are being replaced by new ones deemed more suitable to today’s world. Ideas such as selfl essness, humility, and longing, among others, have seemingly lost value as a consequence of the frantic pace of modern life and replaced by self-centredness, greed, aridity, exteriority, which will have a direct impact on our surrounding environment. Let’s imagine a land in which selfi shness is not a priority. Instead, replace it with a society driven by humane preferences. Would the architecture of that society still look like ours does today? Would it be as unsociable as it is in our so-called advanced civilization? This thesis investigates this query through a juxtaposition of the traditional values of a Persian art with the demands of modern life. It is a study of the calligraphic art of Iran as a transcendental practice, highly intertwined with strong emotions, wherein the intention of the research is to discover the relationship between Persian calligraphy and architecture. Presenting calligraphy as a context for understanding architecture has the potential to get beyond ourselves in the spaces we author. This research aims to allow the essence of Persian calligraphy into modern space as a means to revive the true essence of architecture: reunion of feeling and space, a concept that is given too little attention in our current architecture.

The main goal of this work was: Analyze relations of Christians with the sacred in the discursive, practical utilitarian and spectacular conceptions of postmodern religiosity in a traditional Presbyterian Church Protestant Christian. The subject of this survey, which was qualitative, were the leaders of this religious institution, especially pastors and priests. We verify, by interviews and observations, which many followers of Presbyterian Church are involved or are contradictory in the acceptance of spectaculars practices and of utilitarian mysticism in its religious experience. In summary, they practice postmodern religiosity by the fact they think and live the religion as a consumer product. This influence of the massive religious about them has led us to see the frequent breaking of religious ethics established within the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Internal Constitution of Presbyterians from many followers of this institution. We start from the classic work of Weber (1998), the Protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism and resorted to other theorists as Bauman (1997), Lipovetsky (2007), Frankl (1994 and 1997), Pierucci (2006), Prandi and Pierucci (1996), Eliade (1978 and 1992), Debord (1997) and others who have inspired us in this research.

Quête spirituelle, quête de soi dans les œuvres complètes de César Dávila Andrade : une écriture en mouvement / Spiritual quest, personal quest in César Dávila Andrade’s works : a writing in movement

Berge, Caroline 10 December 2016 (has links)
César Dávila Andrade’s works are still underestimated and enjoy limited distribution. Moreover, they have been largely unexplored until now. Our corpus is composed of the César Dávila Andrade‘s complete works, which means his total body of poetic work, the short stories and the essays. We will focus on the legacies and the influences of the writer, in order to study the language and the imagination. We will show how the author is in search of new literary landscapes. Indeed, as his purpose is to find a dynamic writing, in movement; the author breaks up the limits of the field of literature. He explores a new way that could give him access to transcendental higher-order knowledge, so as to reveal the Word.

Between Convent Chores and Mystical Raptures: The Spiritual Diary of Ursula de Jesus (Lima, Seventeenth Century) / Entre quehaceres conventuales y arrebatos místicos: el Diario Espiritual de Úrsula de Jesús (Lima, siglo XVII)

Pignano Bravo, Giovanna 12 April 2018 (has links)
The present article studies the case of the black donada Ursula de Jesus (Lima, 1604-1666), whose exceptional religiosity was described by a Franciscan friar and nun, both anonymous. She spent the greater part of her life inside the convent of Santa Clara, which she entered as the slave of a nun of the black veil. Later she obtained her liberty and, supported by certain nuns, entered as a donada. She went on to write a Spiritual Diary in which she described her everyday life in the convent and the vicissitudes of her spirituality. While we know of other Afro-descendants who were recognized for their piety, we know them only through the dominant discourse that shaped their individual experiences to make them fit the models of Western sanctity. In this case, it is the opposite: the Spiritual Diary allows us to hear the voice of an Afro-descended woman. Through an analysis of the Spiritual Diary, written between 1650 and 1661 and published in Lima in 2004, this article studies the identity that Ursula de Jesus constructs in her text, which reinterprets the reigning Catholic dogma and constructs a Black mystical spirituality.

[en] MYSTIQUE AND EMBODIMENT: EXPERIENCE, ETHICS AND PRAXIS OF SIMONE WEIL / [pt] MÍSTICA E CORPOREIDADE: EXPERIÊNCIA, ÉTICA E PRÁXIS EM SIMONE WEIL

ANDREIA CRISTINA SERRATO 29 June 2017 (has links)
[en] Mystique and embodiment: experience, ethics and praxis of Simone Weil is a research whose starting point is the mystical experience of the body according to the French philosopher Simone Weil, who had a mystical-ethical experience in praxis, merging her body and soul. Such experience was intensified when the philosopher felt as if Christ was inside her body. This experience will be demonstrated through its mystic-erotic language, which leads her to give herself up entirely to the Other. Her wait (en attente) for God, or in other words, her wait to be found by God, allowed her to have a life guided by the body of Christ, beginning with her closeness to the Pauline ethics, and showing her solidarity with the miseries of the human race, as the same as Christ did – He gave his body to everybody, which was in the end the real eucharistic experience: to give yourself as food and drink to the others. Initially, this study is based on many different areas, such as sociology, psychology and philosophy, so that we can discuss about the contemporary view of body. Our safe haven will be Theology. Afterwards, this research will be carried out in the light of Simone Weil s experience, which we reflected upon from two different perspectives – the first one the body that suffers, frail and resilient, and the second one The body that loves, with sensibility to love and to vibrate. Finally, signs of an apostolic erotic mystique to configure the body of Christ will be presented regarding Simone Weil as a starting point, since she has developed ways to live the mystique nowadays.

The permanence of the cycle mystical-religious in Brazilian literature of cordel

Lima, Antonio Carlos Ferreira 10 September 2008 (has links)
This study seeks to investigate the permanence of the cycle mystical-religious literature of Cordel in the Brazilian North East in levels of construction textual. For both, browse in the poetry scene of several periods of production-creation drawing significant elements of mysticism and religiosity of the people northeast, used as a motto for the construction of such textual poetry popular narrative. Thus, the mystical and religious universe that is represented in the poetry of Literature of Cordel, which appears in beliefs and devotions popular is investigated while construction poetic leitmotif of a unique, in line with the geopolitical scenario and psychosocial of which are inseparable. Thus, both the saints canonic of popular devotion - Our Lady of Sorrows and St. George those sanctified by devout, faithful and pilgrims Antonio Conselheiro, Father Cicero and Brother Damian - and added the mythical characters the popular imagination devil, witches and ghost comprise the world mystical and impregnated with religiosity that remains always as privileged motto, in levels of construction textual, in the literature of Cordel.

A ASCENSÃO CELESTIAL DE PAULO DE TARSO: ANÁLISE DE 2 CORÍNTIOS 12,1-10 A PARTIR DA HISTÓRIA DA RELIGIÃO E DA NEUROTEOLOGIA / THE HEAVENLY ASCENT OF PAUL OF TARSUS: AN ANALYSIS OF 2 CORINTHIANS 12, 1-10 FROM HISTORY OF RELIGION AND NEUROTHEOLOGY

No. of bitstreams: 1 Sebastiana maria Silva.pdf: 1536000 bytes, checksum: 2487c2d3e1207d1baf47cde8279add8a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-09-11 / Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo / The subject celestial journey , well familiar to the old mediterranean world, is based on the belief that the visionary can cross the boundary between humanity and divinity, a constant characteristic in apocalyptic literature. Old Jewish mysticism was seen as an important dimension of this tradition, that is the reason why the mystics used the term apocalypse to describe the revelation of their experiences. Paul s ascension to heaven, recounted in 2 Cor 12,1-10, is the only first hand account and the best evidence of ecstatic practice of celestial journey in first century Judaism. This text, one of great interest in the studies of New Testament, has been examined in thematic forms that extend from the recognition of the apostle as enjoyable to divinity - what granted him such a heroic achievement - to a punishment experience by the guardians of the celestial gates for finding in him no merit to approach the place of the presence of God. For long time, the studies that prevailed in the academy were those of the theological aspects of the passage, such as the spine in the flesh , the apostolic mission , Paul s opponents , among others. The language of the passage reveals important topics that were not considered together for a coherent interpretation of the text. The use of expressions from the Jewish mystical apocalyptic circle like "caught up", "Third Heaven", "hear unutterable words" and "a thorn for the flesh" by the apostle needs to be investigated for the comprehension of what Paul had in mind while using those terms. Another problem is the omission of the experimental approach described in the passage. The apostle reveals that he lived the experience recounted in 2 Cor 12,1-10. While he was telling the unknown status of his body during the rising, he highlights signs of the altered state of consciousness, an aspect that was not considered in the traditional analysis of the text. These problems are analyzed in this thesis take as instruments of the Religion History and the Neurotheology analysis. Models were built trying to demonstrate a correlation between brain activity and mystical experience. In this respect, we have to point out that the emergence of neurotheology, or spiritual neurology brings a progress to the area of religious experience. Some points of difficult interpretation in pauline text have been clarified under this perspective. The proposal of this study was to build a contextual frame to analyse the ecstatic experience of Paul. The study made it possible to infer that the interdisciplinary approach allows a more appropriate scenario to the understanding and interpretation of the text.
