(Des)atenção e memoria : um estudo neurolinguistico / (Un)attention and memory : a neurolinguistic study

Marcolino, Noeli Lobo Costa 26 February 2008 (has links)

Abstract: This essay presents a case study of a young veterinary student (FR), who by the age of 22, suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest, during a jiu-jitsu class, that resulted in brain anoxia and a bilateral diffuse lesion, which affected issues concerning the body as well as linguistic-cognitive aspects and, especially, memory. The study aims to understand the effects caused by the neurological lesion either from the neuropsychological point of view, and also from the social-affective perspective; since they are both relevant to the therapeutic accompaniment. This case, considering the area in which it is inserted - the Speech Therapy - and based on the theoretical frameworks of the Discursive Neurolinguistics (ND), assumes a dynamic, complex and historical understanding of language, of the brain and of the subjects. Attention and memory processes, understood in consonance with the Lurian neuropsychology, are analyzed with the methodology of the so-called "dado-achado" (COUDRY, 1996), which does not have a literal translation into English, and which means that the data are not merely illustrative of a theory, but "found", in an archeological sense of "discovered", as a "treasure" which reveals aspects of language functioning. This conception contributes not only to the Discursive Neurolinguistics, but also - and most importantly - to the clinical practice with brain-damaged subjects. This methodology of research made it possible to deal with the hypothesis that guided this work: a linguistic-cognitive functioning that suffers the effects of cortical tonus damage, leading to difficulties to inhibit internal and external stimulus, causing its effects in the psychological functions. In other words, we see the case as a Psycho-organic syndrome. / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestre em Linguística

An exploratory study on the usefulness of eye movement integration therapy in overcoming childhood trauma

Struwig, Elsabet 27 May 2010 (has links)
M.A. / Since 1994, there have been various changes in social work in South Africa, changes that reflect developments in international social work. Social workers are described as generalist practitioners, who must be able to address their clients’ problems on different levels of service delivery and drawing on an eclectic range of theories and intervention models. Trauma is a definite reality in South Africa and only one of many problems that social workers face. Eye Movement Integration Therapy (EMI) is a therapy that has its roots in neurolinguistic programming (NLP). Steve and Connirae Andreas researched the possible link between eye movements and therapeutic growth. Subsequently EMI was developed to facilitate the reduction of trauma symptoms. Danie Beaulieu studied under the Andreas’s and developed the technique further. According to contemporary research, the amygdala is responsible for storing trauma memories. These memories are fragmented, as they are stored in the sensory modalities and have no narrative. The precise mechanisms of EMI are still unknown. It appears, however, that EMI, with its 22 eye movements, assists with the integration of fragmented trauma memories. The effectiveness of EMI with the adult population has been studied, but not its usefulness with children. The goal of this study was therefore to explore the usefulness of EMI in overcoming childhood trauma. A sample of 12 children, aged 14-16 years, who had experienced trauma, underwent a single session of EMI with the researcher. A multi-method approach was utilised as both qualitative and quantitative methods were implemented. The quantitative component took the form of the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC) administered before and after the single EMI session. The qualitative component of this study had two parts, namely a semi-structured interview with the parents/caregivers of the children conducted after the EMI session, and a journal that the researcher kept throughout the data collection process. The study found that EMI effectively and significantly reduced the trauma symptoms of the respondents. The successful clinical application of the intervention with children also showed that EMI is a useful technique in the recovery from childhood trauma.

Além disso, comparamos as propostas de material e atividades da Associação Brasileira de Dislexia com o trabalho realizado no Centro de Convivência de Linguagens (CCazinho/IEL/Unicamp) / Abstract: In the face of a background of excessive labelling in which there are a great number of diseases and diagnostics related to school problems, mostly concerning the processes of reading and writing acquisition, this masters dissertation discusses, based on the Discoursive Neurolinguistics, how these diagnostics are being given and the consequences that they bring to children's lives. In spite of the many "diseases" that are emerging to justify school problems and failures or to justify an inappropriate behavior from some children, this text will focus on the debates on dyslexia. Therefore, our goal is to discuss how dyslexia came up as a disease, analyzing for that matter the authorized discourse on it (mostly from the Associação Brasileira de Dislexia - ABD) and the conception of language in which this discourse is based on that work as an apparatus capable of controlling the subject, according to Agamben (2004). Besides, we compare the activities and material from the Associação Brasileira de Dislexia with the work done at the Centro de Convivência de Linguagens (CCazinho/IEL/Unicamp) / Mestrado / Linguistica / Mestre em Linguística

A psycho-educational programme for cricket players using neuro-linguistic programming

Saunders, Dawn Elizabeth 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (SportPsych))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / There has been a greater awareness in the psychological aspects of sport over the past few decades, and in particular, how the psyches of the players affect their performance. The game of cricket has been no exception. Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) has been used successfully in the business world, but very little research has been done in the sport milieu. The motivation for this research was two-fold. First, there was the need for a cricket team to be mentally prepared to play at their highest potential on provincial level; second, the researcher was curious about NLP techniques being successfully applied in sport. NLP is the study of human excellence. It describes human functioning, and focuses on experience and experimenting rather than prescription; it can focus on how to intervene, transform and improve human functioning. NLP uses modelling to identify particular skills in successful people. (They like to say: “If he can do it, then I can do it too”.) Neuro refers to the nervous system and how it processes particular codes in the body through the five senses. Linguistic refers to the use of language and how it gives meaning to the neural processes through communication and symbolic systems. Programming refers to how a person sequences his actions to achieve his goals.

Catégorisation cognitive et stéréotypie dans la production du langage chez les patients schizophrènes : contributions psycholinguistiques / Cognitive categorization and stereotype during langage production in shizophrenic patients : neurolinguistic

Vasile, Beniamin 16 May 2012 (has links)
This PhD thesis presents the exploration of the linguistic production at the schizophrenia adults through the processes of cognitive categorization and lexicalization. The interdisciplinary approach gathers the psychopathology, the cognitive linguistics and elements of neuropsychology within the framework of an experimental protocol approved by the clinical services of Purpan CHU (teaching hospital) from Toulouse. Structured in three parts, the protocol investigates the lexical, phrasal and discursive levels in schizophrenia patients by means of naming tasks, verbal fluency and storytelling within the framework of clinical experiments. The results confirm the data of the specialized literature stating quantitative and qualitative deficits in schizophrenia patients. In addition, the rich content of the corpus indicates the importance of the stereotypes which show through in psycholinguistics fixed frames in these patients and which require a specified coverage(Cognitive remediation, art-therapy).

O percurso socio-cognitivo da construção da referencia em situações interativas envolvendo afasicos e não afasicos / The socio-cognitive pathway of reference constrution in interative situations involving aphasics and non aphasics

O manejo desse conceito ¿ e do quadro teórico a que ele é vinculado - permite a visualização de fenômenos lingüístico-cognitivos que fortalecem a argumentação segundo a qual não existe um corte tão radical entre a linguagem tida como 'normal¿ e a pertencente ao denominado 'campo patológico¿ / Abstract: Generally, the traditional studies about aphasia associate it with insurmountable deficiencies in communication and with a serious damage of the structures of cognition. Among other damages, the sufferers of aphasia would resent with the loss of metalanguage and, with it, of world referencing/categorization capacities. Nonetheless, the inclusion of socio-cognitive and situational variables in the analytical perspective can put this verdict to a minimum. The present research has as its goal to follow the socio-cognitive pathway of enunciative-pragmatic meaning construction in situations of face-to-face interactions, involving both aphasic and non aphasic subjects. It is theoretically based in the interactionist postulate (Mondada, Marcuschi, Koch, Morato) that the construction of meaning is a process that involves several orders of dynamism, movement and interaction (between language and cognition, between language and other semiotic processes, between interlocutors, between subject and language). This postulate is grounded in the analysis of three simultaneous axes: the interactivity, the co-occurrence of verbal and non-verbal processes of semiotic nature and the subjectivity. The present work concludes in favor of the heuristic benefits that came through the adoption and mobilization of the concept of reference making in the neurolinguistics field. The use of this concept ¿ and of the theoretical framework to which it is attached ¿ enables the visualization of linguistic-cognitive phenomena that corroborate the claim according to which there isn¿t a so radical gap between the language understood as ¿normal¿ and the one that belongs to the so-called ¿pathological field¿ / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística

Perottino, Silvana, 1960- 11 November 2009 (has links)
Orientador: Maria Irma Hadler Coudry / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-15T00:54:23Z (GMT). / Abstract: In this study I present a reflection on my experiences at the speech therapeutic clinic, based on the reports of sessions with a boy, JM, with a neurological diagnosis of psychoses/autism. The first three chapters consist in a critical analysis of the medical and speech therapeutic literature about language delays and autism, and focus also on the analysis of the pragmatic perspective of the speech therapeutic intervention, based on the theoretical notions from both the interactionist approach to language acquisition (DE LEMOS, 1982) and the discursive neurolinguistics (COUDRY, 1986/1988). These two perspectives, added to the formulations from the language clinic (LIER-DE VITTO, 1994) were the basis for the texts I used during the interventions with JM. When I started the writing of the case, the positions of clinician and investigator showed to be different, because just on the only after, as an investigator, it was possible to reflect on the interpretation of the silences, oral production and the child's gestures in which it was revealed not the "act made when one speaks", a possible reading from a pragmatic perspective, but "what the speaking does". In this way, the direction taken by JM's treatment was determined by the notion of language functioning, that is, its logical anteriority to the subject, at the encounter with the singularity of the speech. The last two chapters focus on JM's discourse in his journey for language acquisition, highlighting the occurrence of structural changes in which incorporated fragments from my speech went through some other combinations and resulted in statements which revealed they were determined by language laws, that is, the metaphorical and metonymical processes (DE LEMOS, 2002). The fact that this child's path through language is based on the narrative of a boy that was built on the discursively oriented practices with the language (COUDRY, 2002) - games and drama, fantasies, book reading - developed during the sessions, allows us to infer that the symptom formation issue for that child was strongly present to me throughout the therapeutic process. The dissolution of the non-speaking symptom, at least its passage to the other one, is mentioned in the conclusion of the thesis as, when meeting him years after the completion of the speech therapeutic treatment, I noted that the necessary forgetfulness of the childish speech had actually occurred (FREUD, 1889/1994; PEREIRA DE CASTRO, 2006). However, this childish speech returns under other circumstances, through JM's hesitations and lapse, thus revealing a language subject. The confirmation of my implication in the case (LEMOS, 2002) comes from the fact that when writing it, my desire to prevent a child from being anonymous makes it real. / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística

Neurolinguistic Programming Treatment of Combat-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Rogers, Susan 01 May 1992 (has links)
The goal of the study was to determine the effect of the neurolinguistic programming procedure of visual-kinesthetic dissociation on symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder in a sample of Vietnam combat veterans. Thirty-eight veterans in a Veterans Administration treatment program were given three sessions of either visual-kinesthetic dissociation or regular program activities. Overall post-traumatic symptoms, re-experiencing symptoms, and amount of sleep were measured before and after treatment and at a three month follow-up. Results indicated that the treatment program itself had no significant effect on symptoms measured, nor did the addition of visual-kinesthetic dissociation provide any incremental symptom relief.

Počátky neurolingvistického výzkumu v oblasti tlumočení v Itálii (SSLMIT Terst) a další vývojové tendence (teoretická studie) / Neurolinguistic Approach to Interpreting Research in Italy (SSLMIT Trieste): Beginning and Recent Trends

Kadová, Alžběta January 2011 (has links)
An important field of interpreting research, neurolinguistic approach emerged soon after the shift towards an interdisciplinary approach to research into interpreting. The mutually beneficial collaboration between neurolinguists and interpreters has been centred mainly on the issue of language representation in interpreters as bilingual subjects, namely on the role each of the two cerebral hemispheres plays depending on the task (automatic speech production, shadowing, translation of single words or phrases, simultaneous interpreting), choice of interpreting strategy (literal vs. meaning-based interpretation) or on the direction of interpreting (B to A vs. A to B language). The thesis focuses on the research into hemispheric lateralization done at SSLMIT, University of Trieste, Italy - the place where, in the 80s, the neurolinguistic approach was first adopted. The Trieste School then remained its centre for approximately ten years. The beginning chapters of this theoretical study present the fundamentals of neuranatomy, neurophysiology and neurolinguistics, necessary for understanding of the mental processes underlying simultaneous interpretation. Furthermore, relevant neuroimaging methods are introduced that either have already been used in or could be applied to interpreting research in the...
