Identifying Optimal Throw-in Strategy in Football Using Logistic Regression / Identifiering av Optimal Inkaststrategi i Fotboll med Logistisk Regression

Nieto, Stephan January 2023 (has links)
Set-pieces such as free-kicks and corners have been thoroughly examined in studies related to football analytics in recent years. However, little focus has been put on the most frequently occurring set-piece: the throw-in. This project aims to investigate how football teams can optimize their throw-in tactics in order to improve the chance of taking a successful throw-in. Two different definitions of what constitutes a successful throw-in are considered, firstly if the ball is kept in possession and secondly if a goal chance is created after the throw-in. The analysis is conducted using logistic regression, as this model comes with high interpretability, making it easier for players and coaches to gain direct insights from the results. A substantial focus is put on the investigation of the logistic regression assumptions, with the greatest emphasis being put on the linearity assumption. The results suggest that long throws directed towards the opposition’s goal are the most effective for creating goal-scoring opportunities from throw-ins taken in the attacking third of the pitch. However, if the throw-in is taken in the middle or defensive regions of the pitch, the results interestingly indicate that throwing the ball backwards leads to increased chance of scoring. When it comes to retaining the ball possession, the results suggest that throwing the ball backwards is an effective strategy regardless of the pitch position. Moreover, the project outlines how feature transformations can be used to improve the fitting of the logistic regression model. However, it turns out that the most significant improvement in accuracy of logistic regression occurs when incorporating additional relevant features into the model. In such case, the logistic regression model achieves a predictive power comparable to more advanced machine learning methods.

Felder, Fabian 03 May 2024 (has links)
The pictorial splendor of late medieval carved altarpieces was rarely revealed to contemporary viewers in the form we are familiar with today. In church interiors darkened by stained glass windows and hidden behind a rood screen that restricted the view, these complex pictorial systems were more sensed and perceived than seen and grasped in their entirety. This makes it all the more astonishing that art historical research has so far focused on iconographic and programmatic analyses, which are inadequate against the background of this very reception. The dissertation project is the first to combine context-bound questions of liturgies with media-aesthetic findings from image-based research. This combination offers the opportunity to address functional and aesthetic aspects of the reredos in equal measure. The focus is on the question of how and under what circumstances high altar retables were able to generate visibility in the late Middle Ages. Only from this point of view is it possible to grasp the potential with which retables appeared at certain times in certain spatial and liturgical contexts. In this context, the rood screen can be identified as a central element that permanently directed and temporarily restricted the gaze. In the late medieval church space, according to the approach, gradual visibilities can be assumed. The project therefore focuses on researching the interferences between the retable, the rood screen and the surrounding space, which had a significant impact on the shaping and perception of the retable. The result is a broader view of the entire decoration of the church interiors, their social segmentation and the power of interpretation of these by actors, who in turn influenced the subsequent decoration through their interpretations. These church spaces accumulated in this way are powerful, control views, provide insights, open up in a temporally regulated manner and thus oscillate between visibility and invisibility.

ON-MACHINE MEASUREMENT OF WORKPIECE FORM ERRORS IN ULTRAPRECISION MACHINING

Gomersall, Fiona January 2016 (has links)
Ultraprecision single point diamond turning is required to produce parts with sub-nanometer surface roughness and sub-micrometer surface profiles tolerances. These parts have applications in the optics industry, where tight form accuracy is required while achieving high surface finish quality. Generally, parts can be polished to achieve the desired finish, but then the form accuracy can easily be lost in the process rendering the part unusable. Currently, most mid to low spatial frequency surface finish errors are inspected offline. This is done by physically removing the workpiece from the machining fixture and mounting the part in a laser interferometer. This action introduces errors in itself through minute differences in the support conditions of the over constrained part on a machine as compared to the mounting conditions used for part measurement. Once removed, the fixture induced stresses and the part’s internal residual stresses relax and change the shape of the generally thin parts machined in these applications. Thereby, the offline inspection provides an erroneous description of the performance of the machine. This research explores the use of a single, high resolution, capacitance sensor to quickly and qualitatively measure the low to mid spatial frequencies on the workpiece surface, while it is mounted in a fixture on a standard ultraprecision single point diamond turning machine after a standard facing operation. Following initial testing, a strong qualitative correlation exists between the surface profiling on a standard offline system and this online measuring system. Despite environmental effects and the effects of the machine on the measurement system, the capacitive system with some modifications and awareness of its measurement method is a viable option for measuring mid to low spatial frequencies on a workpiece surface mounted on an ultraprecision machine with a resolution of 1nm with an error band of ±5nm with a 20kHz bandwidth. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Le phénomène acheuléen en Europe Occidentale : approche chronologique, technologie lithique et implications culturelles / THE ACHEULIAN PHENOMENON IN WESTERN EUROPE : Chronological approach, lithic technology and cultural implications / IL FENOMENO ACHEULEANO IN EUROPA OCCIDENTALE : Approccio cronologico, tecnologia litica e implicazioni culturali / EL FENÓMENO ACHEULEANO EN EUROPA OCCIDENTAL : Enfoque cronológico, tecnológia litica e implicaciones culturales / DAS PHÄNOMEN DES ACHEULÉENS IM ABENDLÄNDISCHEN EUROPA : Chronologischer Ansatz, lithologische Technologie und kulturelle Auswirkungen

Nicoud, Elisa 10 May 2011 (has links)
The historic and substantial diversity of the Western European Acheulian can be perceived from a phenomenological standpoint. All of the 36 lithic assemblages studied in France, England, Italy and Spain provide an original production. The bifacial phenomenon can be separated from other expressions of the Acheulian. Indeed, bifacial pieces, in the strict sense, appear in great numbers in northern Europe around the OIS 11 and in the Mediterranean region around the OIS 9. However, the latter are found under different forms, which imply major modifi cations of all the production. The critical analysis of lithostratigraphic contexts and the consideration of technical, technological and chronological diversities, allow reconsidering the paradigm of the « Out of Africa » diffusion. The hypothesis of a local invention and evolution of bifacial pieces can be put forward. The use of this term has limited our perception of the Lower Paleolithic as a whole. One should now focus on analyzing the diversity of human behaviors and societies.

The copyright protection of musical works : a historical and contextual analysis

Baloyi, Jele Joel 21 October 2019 (has links)
This work is concerned with an analysis of the copyright protection of musical works. Musical works form part of the categories of works protected under copyright law. It would be easy to dismiss musical works as not warranting a serious study, as would for example, be warranted for “industrial property” rights such as patents and geographical indicators, or more “serious” copyrights such as architectural works and computer software. Such a perspective would however, not be cognisant of the significant contribution that the music industry, as part of the broader cultural and creative industries makes to the global economy. It has, for example, been shown that in 2013, the global cultural and creative industries contributed some US$2,250b, employing some 29,5 million people, with the music industry being one of the top three employers and with its revenues exceeding those of radio.1 A single successful musician can earn in excess of US$100m per annum,2 making the industry ripe for litigious claims. For this reason therefore a consideration of the legal rules that apply to the protection of musical works is crucial. There is currently no clear exposition and systematic analysis of the legal principles applicable to the field of music copyright and no work devoted to the in-depth delineation of the rights and sub-rights relating to musical copyright protection. This study seeks to address this research and knowledge gap by providing a historical and contextual analysis of the protection of musical works. The aim is to provide a complete picture of the milieu of music copyright protection to enable the reader to feel empowered in dealing with the subject-matter. This the writer does by mapping the historical development of music copyright protection in particular from eighteenth century England when the first copyright legislation was enacted, until the enactment of the British Copyright Act of 1911, which signalled the emergence of the “common law” copyright system. The writer then shows how this enactment shaped the development of modern music copyright law, and concludes by presenting a contextual consideration of the current South African law of music copyright and highlighting the challenges it is faced with. / Mercantile Law / LL. Terra Mirabilis: A Composition for Symphony Orchestra in Three Movements

Kraevska, Sofia 11 March 2009 (has links)
Terra Mirabilis is a three-movement musical composition for symphony orchestra with piano solo inspired by natural landscapes photographed by the composer. The three movement composition and its corresponding landscapes portray three times of a day: early morning (I. The Mists), evening (II. Oceanus), and late night (III. Nocturne). Each chapter is devoted to the discussion of one movement, wherein overall concept and form are addressed, followed by detailed analyses of harmonic structure, motivic and thematic development, orchestration, and representational elements. As a complement to the score and the text, a CD-R audio recording of orchestral mock-ups accompanies this dissertation.
