"Undantaget": Reinterpreting (a) dwelling for (an) elderly

Olson, Emmie January 2023 (has links)
In the upcoming years, the proportion of elderly within the population will increase significantly (SCB, Socialstyrelsen). The share of aged is already, and will increasingly be, noticeably higher in municipalities on the countryside compared to in the cities. Accordingly, “a variety of dwellings and form of housing suitable for elderly” is asked for and needed (Socialstyrelsen, Boverket). This thesis is one respond to the situation and an addition to the housing possibilities for elderly; a proposal and a test of one way of dwelling as an elderly on the countryside.  To this background, the thesis is a case study: an interpretation of the obsolescent typology “Undantaget”, a free standing (secondary) structure within the homestead on the countryside which the aged, previous owners often inhabited in preindustrial times. The case study is based on an investigation of the local vernacular building tradition. A contemporary dwelling for an elderly is explored, informed by vernacular tradition and its interwoven principles considering construction and tectonic, approach to/usage of resources as well as (else) economic, social and ecological aspects. A modified “Undantag” is proposed; an investigation of sustainable building and living intertwined.

Building and Maintaining Plankhouses at Two Villages on the Southern Northwest Coast of North America

Shepard, Emily Evelyn 14 March 2014 (has links)
Plankhouses were functionally and symbolically integral to Northwest Coast societies, as much of economic and social life was predicated on these dwellings. This thesis investigates both plankhouse architecture and the production of these dwellings. Studying plankhouse construction and maintenance provides information regarding everyday labor, landscape use outside of villages, organization of complex tasks, and resource management. This thesis investigates three plankhouse structures at two sites, Meier and Cathlapotle, in the Lower Columbia River Region of the southern Northwest Coast of North America. Methods consisted of digitizing over 1,100 architectural features, creating detailed maps of architectural features, and conducting statistical and spatial analysis of these features. I use ethnographies, historical documents, experimental archaeology, and ecological studies to characterize the processes of plankhouse production. This information is combined with excavation data from Cathlapotle and Meier to calculate estimates of material and labor required for plankhouse-related activities. Results of this study support previous inferences regarding house architecture, construction and maintenance at the two sites. Structural elements were frequently replaced, yet overall house appearance changed little over time. Some differences in structural element use and size are noted between the two sites, suggesting that slightly different building techniques may have been employed at the two villages. Although approximate, calculations of raw materials and person days required for various building tasks provide a glimpse of the massive undertaking entailed in constructing and maintaining plankhouses. These data suggest that an enormous amount of trees were required for construction and maintenance over house occupation, approximately 700-1,200 trees at Meier, 900-2,000 trees at Cathlapotle House 1, and 150-400 trees at Cathlapotle House 4. Estimates of minimum person days entailed for tasks related to initial construction range from 1,400-2,800 at Meier, to 2,100-4,500 at Cathlapotle House 1, to 350-700 at Cathlapotle House 4. In highlighting the articulation of plankhouse labor with household reproduction, this thesis demonstrates the important interplay between material outputs, everyday action, and sociopolitical aspects of Northwest Coast society.

Fritidshus 2.0 / Cottage 2.0

Törnkvist, Frida, Metzler Sædén, Maria January 2019 (has links)
To have a second home, a country house, a summer cottage has been a part of Swedish culture for a long period of time. This report examines the phenomenon of leisure, cottages and cottage areas in a historical pretext. From being a benefit for those who are most well-off financially it became more and more common among ordinary people during the time of the twentieth century. How relevant the division between first and second homes are today, the different rules when it comes to construction, insulation and availability is discussed. The needs of our time are investigated and results in a draft for development of a property. A place close to Stockholm is selected. The ground is used as a basis for further development to a leisure area. Roads, joint facilities and houses are being planned close to a lake in the region Södermanland. The focus lies primarily on creating an area with buildings of durability and sustainability. The territory and the living areas are meant to offer recovery and recreation close to nature.

Physical Literacy and Intention to Play Interscholastic Sports in Sixth Grade Physical Education Students

Farren, Gene Lee 08 1900 (has links)
Prevalence of physical inactivity in children and adolescents and the associated epidemic of obesity are increasing concerns. U.S. national health statistics indicate early adolescence (i.e., 10-14 years) appears to be a period of importance regarding physical activity, sedentary behavior, health-related physical fitness, and obesity trends. Considering a significant portion of their waking hours are spent in school, it is widely held that schools' should play a significant role in increasing students' physical activity and health-related physical fitness. To do this, physical education in schools focus on providing quality physical education programs that produce physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of health-producing physical activity. In effect, a call for developing a comprehensive and valid measure of physical literacy has been aptly expressed. Thus, the purpose of this dissertation was to test the psychometric properties of proposed models of physical literacy, examine correlates of the physical literacy factor, and investigate the significance of the relationship between physical literacy and interscholastic sport intention via structural equation modeling. Participants were 400 (231 female, 169 male) sixth-grade physical education students who completed three brief surveys assessing maturation, self-efficacy, self-esteem, knowledge and understanding, motivation, physical activity and sport participation, and interscholastic sport intention. In addition, students completed a sedentary behavior log, a health-related physical fitness assessment, and an overhand throwing skill assessment. Analyses offered overall support for the proposed physical literacy measurement models. Results also supported positive relationship Physical literacy was statistically significantly positively related physical activity and sport team participation, and significantly negatively related and screen-time sedentary behavior. Results also supported a positive path between physical literacy and interscholastic sport intention. The implications of promoting physical literacy within physical education are discussed in light of the three higher-order underlying factors of physical literacy.

Towards a feedback system for upper body bodyweight exercises using multiple inertial measurement units : A user-centred approach / Mot ett feedbacksystem för överkroppsviktsövningar med flera inertiella mätenheter : Ett användarcentrerat tillvägagångssätt

Papadopoulou, Panagiota January 2023 (has links)
This thesis explores the feasibility of developing an affordable and easy-to-use feed- back system that leverages information from multiple inertial measurement units (IMUs) to identify mistakes during upper body bodyweight training and provide real-time feedback to the user. To develop the system, a human-centered approach was used, which involved conducting semi-structured interviews with movement ex- perts and a workshop with targeted end-users to understand their needs. The study also involved 12 volunteers who performed push-ups, tricep dips, and planks cor- rectly and then made specific mistakes intentionally while wearing five IMUs. Binary and multiclass classifiers were developed to classify the exercise technique. The re- sults showed that personalized multiclass classifiers produced good to excellent quality results, while global classification techniques performed poorly. Additionally, an increased number of sensors did not always lead to improved classification re- sults, and the placement of the sensors could have a significant impact. The user in- put and evaluation of the feedback system pinpointed the need for customization and accessibility in the design. This thesis contributes to the development of a feedback system that can help users identify mistakes in their upper body bodyweight exer- cises and improve their form and technique.

[en] A PRIORI ESTIMATES WITH APPLICATION TO MEAN-FIELD GAMES / [pt] ESTIMATIVAS A PRIORI E JOGOS DE CAMPO MÉDIO

JOAO VITOR MEDEIROS DOMINGOS 28 January 2021 (has links)
[en] The mean-field games framework was developed to study problems with an infinite number of rational players in competition, which could be applied in many problems. The formalized study of these problems has begun, in the mathematical community by Lasry and Lions, and beside them, but independently close to the same time in the engineering community by P. Caines, Minyi Huang, and Roland Malhamé. Since these seminal contributions, the research in mean-field games has grown exponentially, and in this work we present a regularity to a case of mean-field games using particulars techniques. In this work, we study time-dependent mean-field games in the subquadratic case, that is, mean-field games, which are written as a system of a Hamilton–Jacobi equation and a transport or Fokker–Planck equation, where The Hamiltonian presented on the Hamilton–Jacobi equation has a subquadratic growth. We begin by assuming ten assumptions, and then, under these assumptions derive Lipschitz regularity of the system.

Honzková, Zuzana January 2017 (has links)
Title: Evaluation of the effect of "plank" exercise on postural stability of the individual. Aims: The aim of this diploma thesis is to assess the effect of "plank" position exercise on postural stability of the individual, which is assessed using dynamic comtuterized posturography (NeuroCom SMART EquiTest System). Summary: This pilot study involved 10 women ranging in age from 20 to 30 years. Participants of the study underwent thirty-day exercise intervention program, during which endurance time in "plank" position was increased gradually each day. Postural stability was measured by dynamic computerized posturography SMART EquiTest System before and after the exercise program from NeuroCom. Measured data were processed using NeuroCom Balance Manager Software. To evaluate the effect of intervention program statistical methods (paired t-test, Wilcoxon rank sum test) were used along with rate of clinical significance of intervention (Cohen's d). Results: The results of this study indicate that long-term "plank" position exercise has a positive effect of enlargement of postural stability limits in an upright stand position. Other parameters of postural stability, detectable by dynamic computerized posturography, were not affected. Keywords: postural stability, stability of the axial system, stability...

We propose an application of these results to a model of capital and wealth accumulation. In Chapter 1, an introduction to mean-field games is presented. We also put forward some of the motivation from Economics and discuss previous developments in the theory of differential games. These comments aim at indicating the connection between mean-field games theory, its applications and the realm of Mathematical Analysis. In Chapter 2, we present an optimal control problem. Here, the agents are supposed to be undistinguishable, rational and intelligent. Undistinguishable means that every agent is governed by the same stochastic differential equation. Rational means that all efforts of the agent is to maximize a payoff functional. Intelligent means that they are able to solve an optimal control problem. Once we describe this (stochastic) optimal control problem, we produce a heuristic derivation of the mean-field games system, which is summarized in a Verification Theorem; this gives rise to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation (HJ). After that, we obtain the Fokker-Plank equation (FP). Finally, we present a representation formula for the solutions to the (HJ) equation, together with some regularity results. In Chapter 3, a specific optimal control problem is described and the associated MFG is presented. This MFG is prescribed in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ ℝd, which introduces substantialadditional challenges from the mathematical view point. This is due to estimates for the solutionsat the boundary in Lp. The rest of the chapter puts forward two well known tips of estimates: theso-called Hopf-Lax formula and the First Order Estimate. In Chapter 4, the wealth and capital accumulation mean-field game model is presented. The relevance of studying MFG in a bounded domain then becomes clear. In light of the results obtained in Chapter 3, we close Chapter 4 with the Hopf-Lax formula, and the First Order estimates. Three appendices close this thesis. They gather elementary material on Stochastic Calculus and Functional Analysis. O objetivo do capítulo é transmitir.

Energieffektivisering med fukthänsyn av ytterväggar på plankhus / Energy efficiency with moisture consideration of wooden walls on massive wooden house

Persson, Simon, Krantz, Edwin January 2017 (has links)
Purpose: Villas built before 1960 represent around 45% of the dwelling in Sweden. Since the average U-value in their walls is around 0,5 W/m2K, there is a great concern to improve  these values. The Swedish government's goal is to reduce energy intensity in the country by 2020 by 20 % from 2008’s values. The aim of this study is to reach phase renovation proposals taking into account energy and moisture on houses consisting of standing shelves. With this, the authors wish to contribute and encourage renovation of existing villas, which in turn can lead to reduced energy consumption. Method: This work is based on a case study of a 1940’s wooden house located in Skillingaryd. Measurements and parameters have been taken in order to calculate the house's specific energy usage in the BV2 analysis program. Document analyses and interviews have been used to get a deeper knowledge of existing conditions, and to suggest ways to utilise the material that the market offers nowadays. This should serve the purpose of creating as energy-efficient phase resolution as possible. Result: The study shows that an outer wall of a massive wooden house should keep a U-value of 0,15 W/m2K to meet the specific energy consumption of 90 kWh/m2 and year, when the other house is additional insulated. The study presents two refurbishment proposals supported by interviewed experts in the insulation and consulting industry. The first option leaves large parts of the old facade untouched, adding new insulation layers of the desired thickness. The second option advises to tear away all old panels into the shelf frame, thus re-building with new materials. Both proposals address the issue of how the facade should be refurbished in order to make it moisture proof. They mostly solve the problem by refurbishing it outwards and by eventually placing a vapor barrier for a maximum of one third in of the insulation. This vapor barrier may or may not be a watershed according to the experts. Some think it is unnecessary when the plank is considered sufficiently diffusion-proof; some believe that it will help to identify where a possible condensation might occur in the wall.  Consequences: The study shows that by means of additional insulation, BBR 24 recommended values can be achieved for an exterior wall while keeping the façade moisture proof. One strength the study shows that the two reported renovation proposals achieve the same end result, although the interference on the facade varies in size. Therefore the authors of the above study recommend to tear down the old facade and build a new control wall with a finishing facade disc. This is when you face a vapor barrier on the façade with a vapor barrier that is laid on the old baselayer of the roof. Then a new roof construction could be built up with roof beams, shavings and roof tiles. As a result, a windy, yet proportional, construction can be created.   Restrictions: The study assumes that the entire house would be refurbished in order for the specific energy use to be possible. Furthermore, the work is based of a shelf shelter located at a particular geographical site. Due to this, the study also offers suggestions on wooden facades only.  Keyword: Plank body, Phase renovation, Specific energy use, diffusion, convection, U-value, air density.

Levd islam i svenska läroböcker : En kvalitativ innehålls- och bildanalys av levd islam i svenska läroböcker / Islam In Swedish Textbooks : A Qualitative Content and Image Analysis of Lived Islam in Swedish Textbooks

Ahmeti, Andin January 2023 (has links)
This essay examines the perspective of lived Islam. This is based on a qualitative content analysis and an image analysis of a selection of teaching materials for religous education in upper secondary schools in Sweden. The theoretical basis of the essay is the seven dimensions of lived religion presented by Enstedt and Planck and Jackson's interpretive approach. The 20th century globalization and influx of refugees has been a deciding factor in making Islam the second-largest religion in Sweden, which means that Muslims are no longer seen as residents in a place far away from Swedish society but as an integral part of it. Previous research has shown that teaching materials are frequently used in teaching, and many students feel that there is a discrepancy concerning the religion they face in the school subject to religious education with the religion they practice themselves. The result shows that the selected material adresses several aspects of lived religion, but that lived Islam is more complicated than it seems. This is because there is a great variation of Islam around the world and within countries. In other words, it is difficult to improve the presentation of lived religion without impairing understanding elsewhere. For example, a textbook can fulfill all aspects of lived religion, but only show a specific way of living. In other words, does a good presentation of the conservative Baptist church in the United States of America not neccesarily match the lived religion of a liberal Christians in Europe or Africa. Similarly, the picture of Islam does not match the variety that exists both nationally and internationally. The presence of lived Islam can be identified in the selected sample of textbooks. However, an improvment is needed, and more specifically, all textbooks should highlight more people who present and represent their way of life based on the religion in question. This is because previous research shows great variation within Islam depending on everything from the country one lives in, the laws that exist there, their family, social circle and the individual himself. The question is, on the other hand, how to achieve this without losing the interest of the pupils by creating too comprehensive books, which in turn also means that they will not be able to spend as much time on the other religions or the subject of religion in general.
