Dimensioning study of EPR2 fuel pool cooling system / Dimensioneringsstudie av EPR2 bränslebassäng kylsystem

Rubler, Thomas January 2023 (has links)
The PTR system allows the EPR2 fuel pool to be cooled. The evacuation of the residual power fromthe pool is ensured by several heat exchangers and pumps, which have to be dimensioned in order to meetdifferent requirements. In order to dimension them, the worst-case scenario of the components must first be determined.Sensitivity to external conditions and efficiency studies enable to propose a heat exchanger design tomeet the requirements. A parametric study then allows to study more precisely the influence of thegeometry of the exchanger on the heat transfer. This allows to guide the conception of a CFD study ofthe design on the Comsol software in order to validate it. The proposed design can then be integratedinto the PTR cooling train. The train is modeled with FloMaster, in order to compute the head losses inthe hydraulic system and to propose a pump altimetry preventing cavitation. The dimensioning case of the exchangers corresponds to the operating case of the PTR trains duringunit shutdown, while the scenario that facilitates cavitation corresponds to the boiling of the fuel pool. The temperature of the cold source RRI is a sensitive data for the operation of the exchangers. In addition, the placement of the baffles and the space between the tubes play a determining role in the heat removal. It was difficult to construct the desired exchanger geometry in CFD. A compromise model was thusidentified and studied in CFD. The FloMaster study showed that the pressure drop in the PTR network isabout 15.5 mCE at the considered flow rate. Cavitation in a main train is not a problem if the pumps arelowered by at least 1.8 meters from the pool suction point. The sizing study therefore allowed us to propose a heat exchanger design close to the specifications, but this could not be precisely studied in CFD. The pressure drop study allowed to propose a pumpaltimetry preventing cavitation.

EXPERIEMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF POOL BOILING AND BOILING UNDER SUBMERGED IMPINGING JET OF NANOFLUIDS

AbdElHady, Ahmed 10 1900 (has links)
<p>An experimental investigation has been carried out in order to investigate the effect of surface initial conditions, concentration, nanoparticles size and deposition pattern on pool boiling and jet impingement boiling of nanofluids. A flat copper surface with initial conditions of Ra = 420 nm, Ra = 80 nm and Ra = 20 nm has been used as the boiling surface. Al2O3 and CuO nanoparticles have been used with de-ionized water to prepare the nanofluids. At 0.01 vol. % concentration of Al2O3, the rate of heat transfer enhanced by 41% and 34% for the Ra = 80 nm and Ra = 20 nm, respectively. While, in the case of Ra = 420 nm, the rate of heat transfer deteriorated by 49%. At 0.005 vol. % concentration the rate of heat transfer deteriorated for all three surfaces. It is believed that the deterioration was due to the uniformity of the deposition. Using 0.01 vol. % concentration of CuO nanofluids resulted in the same trend, however, the rate of heat transfer is less compared to using Al2O3 nanofluids. For example, in the case of Ra = 80 nm, the rate of heat transfer was reduced by 14%.</p> <p>The effect of nanoparticles size has been investigated by changing the nanoparticles size from 50 nm to 10 nm. The change in nanoparticles size resulted in a significant deterioration in the rate of heat transfer for all three surfaces. It is believed that the deterioration was due to the deposition uniformity. As the deposition uniformity has been found to be a major factor that affects the rate of heat transfer, new approach was introduced to quantify the effect of the rate of deposition on the pool boiling of nanofluids.</p> <p>An experimental investigation has been carried out in order to investigate using submerged impingement jet on the rate of heat transfer using nanofluids. At of 0.005 vol. % concentration of Al2O3, surface with Ra = 80 nm, jet to surface vertical distance of 3 mm and Reynolds number of 101311, the rate of heat transfer deteriorated by 19%.</p> <p>Comparing the pool boiling and jet impingement boiling of nanofluids showed that, in the case of jet impingement boiling, the rate of heat transfer was enhanced compared to the case of pool boiling and the deposition was less. However, jet impingement boiling experiments showed deterioration in the rate of heat transfer by 19% compared with pure water.</p> / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Regime shifts, unequal adaptive capacities and the Commons: Exploring behavioural responses in a laboratory experiment

Queckenberg, Sophia January 2023 (has links)
Relentless overexploitation of natural resources has led to resource scarcity, environmentaldegradation and rising inequalities, straining social-ecological systems to breaking point.Ecosystems providing shared resources often respond non-linearly to resource pressuresbeyond critical thresholds, so-called regime shifts, jeopardizing the stable and just provisionof natural resources. Avoiding these critical thresholds is imperative, as not everyone canadapt to drastic changes in resource availability and distribution. In an unequal world wherecapacities to adapt to crossing critical thresholds vary substantially across individuals, groupsand countries, our understanding of behavioural responses remains limited. This thesisexplores whether and how inequality in adaptive capacities within groups sharing a naturalresource influence both the likelihood of groups crossing a critical threshold and groupdynamics. 160 students from the University of Exeter participated in an online Common-PoolResource (CPR) laboratory experiment comparing inequality and baseline treatments. Whileunequal adaptive capacities did not affect group’s likelihood of crossing the threshold, theynegatively impacted social dynamics and perceptions. Participants with low adaptive capacity(LAC) responded to the threat of the threshold by reducing their harvest significantly whencompared to participants with high adaptive capacity (HAC). Therefore, latent inequalities inthe choice context created real inequalities in resource allocation. Furthermore, HACparticipants lacked identification with the disadvantaged group as evidenced by lowerperceived group efficacy and no reduction in harvest. When the harvest was shared unequally, inequalities were more pronounced in the inequality treatment compared to the baseline.Investigating emotions revealed unexpected findings: Participants did not strongly experienceguilt despite its relevance in prior research, instead, positive emotions, particularlycompassion, were prominent across treatments despite non-cooperative outcomes. Whileresults caution against assuming solidarity of the privileged group solely based on awarenessof unequal impacts, future research might consider fairness, beyond inequalities, tounderstand collective behaviours in unequal contexts. / Inequality and the Biosphere: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in an Unequal World

Optimizing Multi-Queue in Parallel Systems with Task Batching

Ronestjärna, Jakob January 2024 (has links)
Multi-queue has been a proven solution for problems related to high input and output for any type of hardware. Therefore, improving it with task batching may increase performance and reduce overhead. While multi-queue and task batching have been studied, combining them has only been mentioned briefly, specifically for priority queues. For this experiment, system metrics of timers and block misses will show potential areas where task batching is beneficial. The result from the performed experiment show that the size of batches has similarities with the number of input workers. The result gives some insight into further improvements of the multi-queue, and the overhead was found to be reduced whenever task batching was used.

Le contrat de société en participation

Vierling-Kovar, Emmanuelle 25 April 2013 (has links) (PDF)

Koupání dětí v krytých bazénech / Bathing of children in indoor swimming pools.

OHEROVÁ, Martina January 2016 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with bathing children, especially infants and toddlers, in indoor swimming pools. It focuses primarily on the potential health and hygiene risks of this activity. It is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part provides a deeper insight into the field of artificial swimming pools, is dedicated to current as well as first ever legislation, in more detail is dedicated to the hygienic requirements for swimming pools according to Decree no. 238/2011, as amended; describes the process of pool water treatment, provides an overview of possible types of disinfecting pool water treatment and comparison within the advantages and disadvantages, describes indicators of water quality and their importance, and mostly focuses on hygienic and health risks in connection with the visit of indoor pools. Gives examples from practice (epidemic), mentions the most common sources of pollution including the most common violations of visitors. The theme of hygienic and health risks is then divided according to the origin of risk to the microbiological part (dedicated to infectious agents), to chemical part (disinfection by products) and to the part of accident risks and risks associated with the water temperature. The thesis is also keenly interested in the views of experts for bathing children, especially infants and toddlers, in indoor artificial pools. Research in the practical part was made by a qualitative method using secondary data analysis (operational and guest regulations, operational logbooks for 2015, the results of laboratory analysis of pool water for the 2015, laws and decrees), participant observation and interviews. The research was conducted in indoor swimming pools in towns Jihlava and Prachatice, which run swimming courses for infants and toddlers as well as for older children. For research, I set the following goals: C1: To monitor the microbiological and the physical-chemical indicators of the pool water quality in relation to Decree no. 238/2011 Coll., as amended, in pre-selected artificial indoor pools during annual operation. C2: To focus on the health status of children (infants and toddlers) in swimming classes. C3: To find out the knowledge and attitudes of visitors (parents) and trainers in the field of hygiene principles for swimming in artificial pools and risks arising from them. Based on the targets I have set the following research questions: V1: Are the monitored microbiological and physico-chemical water quality limits exceeded, and if so, which and under what circumstances? V2: What health problems, if they occured, did infants and toddlers after regular visits of indoor pools have ? V3: Are these children suffering from allergic diseases, and if so, from what type? V4: What knowledge and attitudes do visitors (parents) and lecturers in the field of hygienic principles for swimming in artificial pools and potential risks have? This thesis may serve the general public to extend the knowledge in the field of bathing (not only the children) in artificial pools and to give a view on this subject from different perspectives, as well as operators of swimming pools as an information material.

Surface impacts of gold mining activities on the Kromdraai/Koekemoerspruit : a situation analysis / Alida Jane Botha

Botha, Alida Jane January 2015 (has links)
Six point sources of potential contamination from gold mine tailings were identified along the Kromdraai/Koekemoerspruit drainage basin. The degree of contamination of the tailings, soils, surface water, stream sediments and plants at each point source, as well as the individual contribution of these point sources to the contamination of downstream localities was determined by means of quantitative indices. These indices include availability percentage, threshold exceedance ratio, geoaccumulation index, bioaccumulation index and hyperaccumation threshold exceedance ratio. Both the total concentration pool as well as the available (soluble) fraction thereof were evaluated relative to pH and plant uptake, and as applicable to the sample type, by using the USEPA 3050b and DIN 19730 (NH4NO3) extraction methods, respectively. The results for the eight selected potentially toxic trace elements (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Zn, As and U) were further categorised under current and potential future contamination statuses and discussed according to a source-pathway-receptor model relative to individual localities. Composite sampling was employed to provide a representative average of each locality for an overall contamination profile of the study area. Plant species were classified according to accumulation degree and hyperaccumulation status in order to derive an indication of accumulation efficiency relative to the geochemical status of soils or tailings. A document was compiled in order to be used as a guideline for rehabilitation purposes specific to a geochemically-contaminated drainage system. / MSc (Environmental Sciences), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

The power of power : regime dynamics and the Southern African power pool

Rothkegel, Lisa 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Electricity is the key to economic growth and numerous aspects of human development. Africa’s installed generation capacity is dire, alongside it being the biggest funding backlog the power sector. There is however hope with the projection that to date, only 7% of this power potential has been harnessed. The increased acknowledgement of the importance of electricity for states to improve along with the knowledge that the capacity is there, has driven states within Southern Africa, to engage in increased and committed cooperation with one another. Within the greater vision of regional integration of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in Africa, energy was one of the first formal cooperative arrangements of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which is the region this study will be focusing on. The form of electricity cooperation adopted was that of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), which is geared at increasing cross-border electricity trade and ensuring secure and reliable supply to its members. The study investigates the formation of an electricity regime within Southern Africa, by using the Southern African Power Pool as a case study. In order to properly assess the development of the SAPP, regime theory will be used. An analytical framework, derived from different studies around regime theory has been constructed. This framework assists in the analysis of the formation and evolution of the SAPP, which facilitates the assessment of the type of regime which has emerged, and guides a sound analysis around the degree of the electricity regimes effectiveness. Given the process of formation and characteristics underlying the SAPP, it has been found that it falls within the category of a negotiated regime. The analytical framework provided clear guidelines in assessing the degree of effectiveness regarding the case study at hand. After an analysis of the historical and organisational functioning of the regime - it can be argued that the SAPP is a stable and effective regime, at least on paper. It however faces various challenges, which have constrained its efficient functioning. It is concluded that members of the regime are committed to the SAPP’s continued development despite the problems identified.
